Decorate and upgrade different Christmas cafes.

Speculator, The Stock Market Simulation, is the ultimate in sophisticated investment and trading games. Up to 10 players (9 of whom can be computer players) compete among themselves, trading in the treacherous stock, bond, options, and commodity futures markets, to try to grow an initial inheritance of $100,000 into the millions (or lose it all!) in 30 years, by the time you reach retirement age. Time progresses rapidly, as the stock ticker runs, and a game can last for several hours of actual time -- with no two games ever the same.

Speculator has an amazingly realistic economic and financial model in which all action occurs, so that you can do real investment research before making your trades, by studying balance sheets, earnings reports, and research reports on individual stocks, as well as reading industry and economic reports and projections, to try to find the next hot investment.

I'm not very well at the moment. I was taken ill last Sunday (hence the lack of moderation last weekend) . I will try and moderate occasionally over the weekend (yes, we have another global giveaway with no hoops to jump through tomorrow), but I'm really not up to posting a review today, though I have posted some links to tutorials etc as well as mentioned a few time limited offers for a couple of excellent games that I've personally played and can vouch for with respect to having loads of fun. I may post some images and videos later, but no promises. Thank you to Mavadelo for posting helping last week and to others who contributed to last weeks comments.

Regards W.R.

If you are finding today's game difficult there's a tutorial on the developers site HERE and you can see a video of game play HERE. You can also read a short review of the game HERE

Other Useful Information:

There are a couple of excellent time limited game deals available at the moment that I just had to mention. The first will save you 88% off the recently released Trainz: A New Era Deluxe edition and the second deal is a free copy of Elite Dangerous: Arena (the online version of the game). There are also other free games available via a couple of the Indie Bundle sites. you can find links to these in my sticky post over in the Game Discussion forums HERE

Trainz A New Era Deluxe bundle has 88% off this weekend. The game and all four of the main route dlc's it would usually cost $179.9, but for a limited period, the bundle costs only $19.99. Check it out HERE or HERE. You get the main game plus four dlc packs all of which cost as much as the main game, but with this bundle you basically get the game cheaper than normal and all four dlc's free. i.e. Bidye Traction Railroad, Milwaukee Road - Avery Drexel, Season Town, and Warwick to Wallangarra. (See the videos below)

You can see a video of the Warwick to Wallangarra route HERE, the Season Town route HERE and the Bidye Traction Railroad HERE. The dlc's just add more routes to the main game and make the game more interesting; especially to rail enthusiasts like myself. There is however, a lot more to the game, with lots of free community made stuff and a thriving rail sim community. That said, I personally prefer Trainz rival rail sim called Train Simulator 2016, which in my opinion has much better graphics, especially the more recent routes that have been released. Also, all previous dlc's are compatible with or are upgraded to be compatible with the latest version, plus you automatically get the latest upgrade for free (for example I purchased the game back in 2009 when it was called Railworks. It has been upgraded every year since it's release on Steam, usually with a year number, for example Train Simulator 2012, 2013, 2014 etc and I've never had to pay a penny/cent more. The latest version is Train Simulator 2016. However, if you've purchased dlc for earlier versions of Trainz, they won't be compatible with newer version of the game, for example the Settle to Carlisle route, or engines such as The Duchess and Blue Comet. If you want the same add-on engines for the latest version you have to re-purchase them again; also, every time they bring out a new version of the game, , unlike Dovetails Train Simulator, you have to pay for it again.. You can often pick up the Steam version of Train Simulator 2016 with some of the expensive dlc's included for free. There's a lot of dlc for both games and they are very expensive, but if you just want to potter around with a train sim, both base games are great. Train simulator 2016 is still on sale following Steams summer sale. you can get the main game plus one dlc that usually costs £24.99 and the Steam edition of the game usually costs £24.99, but until Monday you can get both for only £7.49 (70% off). If you have the Steam version of Train Simulator you also have access to a multitude of community made content, though a lot of it will require dlc from the extensive library of add-ons (presently there are 65 additional route add-ons, 203 engines and around 50 rolling stock and environment add-ons.

Elite Dangerous: Arena is totally free over on Steam HERE for this weekend only. The offer ends on the 11th July. This game is well worth getting if you love space simulations. It's the latest version of the cult classic space trading game Elite. I backed the initial release of Elite Dangerous on Kickstarter about 4 years ago. The game was finally released last year and now has a couple of add-ons and a stand alone expansion, which is free this weekend.

Check this game play video HERE

If you are into simulation games per se, there are a couple of sim' bundles over on Bundle Stars, the first contains several agricultural sims plus others such as a skyscraper sim, mining and tunneling, Warehouse and logistics, airport sim and even a tow truck simulation. which you can find HERE, and a racing sim bundle called Born 2 Race 2 that contains 9 racing games such as rFactor, Whacky Wheels, Jet Racing Extreme, the classic Death Rally, Stuntmania reloaded RC )radio controlled) mini racers plus others which you can find HERE. You'll also find another 28 indie bundles on Bundle stars some as cheap as a couple of dollars for several decent games, that cover just about all the major genres including arcade games. There's also loads more bundles available via the other bundle sites such as Indie Gala, Humble Bundle, Otakumaker, Cubic Bundle, Groupee's etc. (see my thread over in the forums which I've linked to below)

Finally, a bit of good news came my way yesterday. I was informed that Alawar have not left the gamegiveaway project. When i was still involved with Alawar way back in 2008 (I used to part of their official beta testing team until they disbanded us and created a community based testing team who used to get discounts instead of getting the full game free, which we always got once the testing had ended. I also posted reviews regularly until I started posting here). They disappeared from the giveaway project for several months. I was still in contact with some of the Alawar team at the time and was told they were just taking a break. Since their return later in 2008 they have continued to give games away without a break until this March. I presume they were just taking a breather again. It will be great to see more games from them again, I hope soon. I do hope Playrix also returns?.

Whiterabbit-uk, Get well soon! GOTD users can get through one Saturday without a review. I think.

.............................................Moderator Comment..........................................

Thank you Walter. I've got so used to being here over the years, it's always a wrench when I'm unable to help or post reviews etc. Thanks to Mavadelo, I will be posting other game reviews via Whiterabbits Reviews eventually, but it's still being built and until I've posted quite a few reviews it isn't really opened to the community yet, but do feel free to visit and maybe add a link to your favorites for future use. :) I will always continue to post reviews and moderate here even when the new site is up and running fully. There are a couple of unfinished reviews posted so far, but they were essentially practice posts as I'm new to such things. Mavadelo will be nursemaiding me through the whole process., but the reviews posted so far need a lot of updating before I'm happy with them. For rail enthusiasts, Mavadelo runs his Train Simulator site from the same web site (Wolfenden Media), so that will be a great place to visit if you are into trains. Mavadelo also creates extra content for the game.

You can visit the site to get an idea as to what it may be like, though the backgrounds etc still have to be changed and the format upgraded. The site will eventually feature all of my gamegiveaway reviews as well as other reviews by other volunteer reviewers. The site will also have several other features such as a free games section, similar to what I used to post in the game discussion forums but more detailed, also a section on what's new in gaming and good game deals etc, and possibly even a chat system such as ventrillo, team speak or other messengers so that community members can chat. I will also be giving away a lot of game keys (from my own personal collection of literally 10K plus game keys) either for well written reviews, posting comments and for the better games in my large collection we will run easy competitions, but there will definitely be NO Facebook, Twitter or other social media requirements. once the site is fully open.

Okay, back to bed for me. I will moderate occasionally throughout the day, but it will be sporadic. Please do continue to post your opinions of today's game giveaway, than you.

In my mention of Steam, I am attempting to take advantage of one of the other game offers and I have to be signed up with Steam to get it free this weekend.

I think I played this in the late 1980's in DOS. Will be interesting to see how it has progress over twenty years later.
STEAM sure makes signing up a difficult task because my attempts to sign up, about 15 have all failed. Only a few times was the failure due to inputting the incorrect CAPTCHA code. The other times it just say my attempt failed and to try later. ??

The game we get is NOT Wall Street Raider. There is a link for Raider inside the one we do get, Speculator -- but we would have to pay for Raider. Not sure if Speculator is better as it is "new", but the title on this giveaway is wrong.

This is an interesting and very different game compared to any given away before.
It is one which requires much thinking and some levels of learning (never a bad thing). The world of high finance and stocks and shares is one I don't really understand...... yet, but I think I'll know more about after a few hours of playing this.
Mostly, it makes a massive change not to have to match, look for, shoot, or collect random things and whilst I enjoy all the usual stuff as much as anyone, this diversion is welcome. So thank you for that GGAOTD.

I've been waiting years to see a sports management game to add to my collection and this is not massively different to one. I'd recommend anyone in doubt to persevere with the help page and then get competitive (not all games are for relax mode lovers and sometimes you might appreciate the challenge).

I have to admit though that this (nearly) review is not based on much time 'playing' Speculator, but at first glance it looks a definite keeper.

My quick impressions here: This is a game, for sure, but not a casual players game - this is closer to a true simulation. I would say then that it would behoove the player to eventually read a lot of the help file, but the tutorial Whiterabbit linked to on the developer's site IS the place to start. The developer seems to understand that this type of sim needs to be learned gradually. I.E., just do a little at a time and let it wash over you. Fortunately, it's designed so you can't be ruined by a little watching and waiting - which is also true in the real world. I can't analyze at this point if the developers understanding of the subject is good, but, from what little I can see, it's very good, he seems to know his subject quite well. The game is not designed as a tutorial for home investing because you could start out with a Trumpian, if you'll forgive me for a current reference, sized budget. (Donald Frump is one of the computer opponents :) ) However, this allows you to see some of the inner workings that the average Joe and Jane never see (and would never imagine actually exist!) and allows you to play company head, which can give you even greater insight to what the money people are doing while we're all slogging to survive. More importantly, this emphasis on starting at the top very likely makes it much more of - and a much better - GAME, than simply a learning tool. In short, the opportunities to learn here - both Wall Street's economics (and real world - part of the point of this game is to point out that Wall Street has some features set up for it's own benefit that may be opposed to the standard vision of theoretical capitalist economics) and some of it's political overlap - is potentially quite great, though I can't say for sure without playing.

There is a problem with information overload and clutter on the main screen, but that's not inaccurate for this kind of undertaking, and only underscores the need to get into the game gradually. Be advised there is a problem with the stock ticker speed - headlines may get by you too fast and you may miss some. You can stop the ticker to avoid this. (Actually, it's a combination stock price "ticker" - from the days when this info came out on an encoded paper tape - and financial headlines.) Also, the speed may be adjustable. However, I don't see a way to recall a headline, though there may be. If there isn't, that is not real world and needs to be fixed.

In short, I can't truly review the game without playing, of course, and I don't have the time now, and probably couldn't get a good feel without putting in a few hours - and I mean multiple hours - playing. Nor can I assess how accurate it is as a Sim without putting in some time reading the help and tutorials, though someone who dabbles in this sort of thing or is trained more than slightly (as I am) in this type of academic endeavor, might be able to skim it and give an opinion rather quickly. But the concept, layout, and the content I've skimmed make me think there could be a gold mine here of useful informative and fun info. (An appropriate analogy - buying gold is a feature, as it should be.) Could be quite fun to play - and it has multiplayer options - but it's an economic puzzle type, so that has to appeal to you, and any potential friends, at least a little.

If keeping track of some basic stats, doing some mild research, and making some decisions with varying levels of risk involved appeals to you - which describes a lot of different kind of sims, including fantasy sports - and the particular subject matter also appeals to you, then I would say this could be a must download for you. I want to learn some of the features of the Wall Street world, so it was a must download for me. Appropriately for Wall Street speculation: I wish you good luck! :)

Kind of a quirky game today ;) but a good one if you're into this kind of thing, and for those about to start investing, might be a good starting point to get a idea and feel for it, but mostly to see if you can get yourself fun rich! Must admit I had a better time than I thought I would playing around with it a bit. Wall Street Raider installed and ran fine on my Win 10 x64.

And get better WhiteRabbit, you have enough on your plate without having to be sick too, and wishes for a speedy recovery! Also very glad to hear Alawar is going to be participating again here, as I love some of their games, and they've always played well for me.

What an interesting game! I don't think this is something that I would have tried on my own, so we helped the game Devs at least that way. I suspect this will be popular amongst those folks who like hacking/money management/business management sims. Only problem I see is the game is relatively old school and the graphics are extremely basic. But that's completely forgivable in this sort of game; where number simulations are more important and graphics could be distracting. When I actually figure out how to play the game I'll be able to give a bit more of a review.
