Wall Street Raider was available as a giveaway on July 9, 2016!
Speculator, The Stock Market Simulation, is the ultimate in sophisticated investment and trading games. Up to 10 players (9 of whom can be computer players) compete among themselves, trading in the treacherous stock, bond, options, and commodity futures markets, to try to grow an initial inheritance of $100,000 into the millions (or lose it all!) in 30 years, by the time you reach retirement age. Time progresses rapidly, as the stock ticker runs, and a game can last for several hours of actual time -- with no two games ever the same.
Speculator has an amazingly realistic economic and financial model in which all action occurs, so that you can do real investment research before making your trades, by studying balance sheets, earnings reports, and research reports on individual stocks, as well as reading industry and economic reports and projections, to try to find the next hot investment.

In my mention of Steam, I am attempting to take advantage of one of the other game offers and I have to be signed up with Steam to get it free this weekend.

I think I played this in the late 1980's in DOS. Will be interesting to see how it has progress over twenty years later.
STEAM sure makes signing up a difficult task because my attempts to sign up, about 15 have all failed. Only a few times was the failure due to inputting the incorrect CAPTCHA code. The other times it just say my attempt failed and to try later. ??

The game we get is NOT Wall Street Raider. There is a link for Raider inside the one we do get, Speculator -- but we would have to pay for Raider. Not sure if Speculator is better as it is "new", but the title on this giveaway is wrong.

This is an interesting and very different game compared to any given away before.
It is one which requires much thinking and some levels of learning (never a bad thing). The world of high finance and stocks and shares is one I don't really understand...... yet, but I think I'll know more about after a few hours of playing this.
Mostly, it makes a massive change not to have to match, look for, shoot, or collect random things and whilst I enjoy all the usual stuff as much as anyone, this diversion is welcome. So thank you for that GGAOTD.
I've been waiting years to see a sports management game to add to my collection and this is not massively different to one. I'd recommend anyone in doubt to persevere with the help page and then get competitive (not all games are for relax mode lovers and sometimes you might appreciate the challenge).
I have to admit though that this (nearly) review is not based on much time 'playing' Speculator, but at first glance it looks a definite keeper.

My quick impressions here: This is a game, for sure, but not a casual players game - this is closer to a true simulation. I would say then that it would behoove the player to eventually read a lot of the help file, but the tutorial Whiterabbit linked to on the developer's site IS the place to start. The developer seems to understand that this type of sim needs to be learned gradually. I.E., just do a little at a time and let it wash over you. Fortunately, it's designed so you can't be ruined by a little watching and waiting - which is also true in the real world. I can't analyze at this point if the developers understanding of the subject is good, but, from what little I can see, it's very good, he seems to know his subject quite well. The game is not designed as a tutorial for home investing because you could start out with a Trumpian, if you'll forgive me for a current reference, sized budget. (Donald Frump is one of the computer opponents :) ) However, this allows you to see some of the inner workings that the average Joe and Jane never see (and would never imagine actually exist!) and allows you to play company head, which can give you even greater insight to what the money people are doing while we're all slogging to survive. More importantly, this emphasis on starting at the top very likely makes it much more of - and a much better - GAME, than simply a learning tool. In short, the opportunities to learn here - both Wall Street's economics (and real world - part of the point of this game is to point out that Wall Street has some features set up for it's own benefit that may be opposed to the standard vision of theoretical capitalist economics) and some of it's political overlap - is potentially quite great, though I can't say for sure without playing.
There is a problem with information overload and clutter on the main screen, but that's not inaccurate for this kind of undertaking, and only underscores the need to get into the game gradually. Be advised there is a problem with the stock ticker speed - headlines may get by you too fast and you may miss some. You can stop the ticker to avoid this. (Actually, it's a combination stock price "ticker" - from the days when this info came out on an encoded paper tape - and financial headlines.) Also, the speed may be adjustable. However, I don't see a way to recall a headline, though there may be. If there isn't, that is not real world and needs to be fixed.
In short, I can't truly review the game without playing, of course, and I don't have the time now, and probably couldn't get a good feel without putting in a few hours - and I mean multiple hours - playing. Nor can I assess how accurate it is as a Sim without putting in some time reading the help and tutorials, though someone who dabbles in this sort of thing or is trained more than slightly (as I am) in this type of academic endeavor, might be able to skim it and give an opinion rather quickly. But the concept, layout, and the content I've skimmed make me think there could be a gold mine here of useful informative and fun info. (An appropriate analogy - buying gold is a feature, as it should be.) Could be quite fun to play - and it has multiplayer options - but it's an economic puzzle type, so that has to appeal to you, and any potential friends, at least a little.
If keeping track of some basic stats, doing some mild research, and making some decisions with varying levels of risk involved appeals to you - which describes a lot of different kind of sims, including fantasy sports - and the particular subject matter also appeals to you, then I would say this could be a must download for you. I want to learn some of the features of the Wall Street world, so it was a must download for me. Appropriately for Wall Street speculation: I wish you good luck! :)

Kind of a quirky game today ;) but a good one if you're into this kind of thing, and for those about to start investing, might be a good starting point to get a idea and feel for it, but mostly to see if you can get yourself fun rich! Must admit I had a better time than I thought I would playing around with it a bit. Wall Street Raider installed and ran fine on my Win 10 x64.
And get better WhiteRabbit, you have enough on your plate without having to be sick too, and wishes for a speedy recovery! Also very glad to hear Alawar is going to be participating again here, as I love some of their games, and they've always played well for me.

What an interesting game! I don't think this is something that I would have tried on my own, so we helped the game Devs at least that way. I suspect this will be popular amongst those folks who like hacking/money management/business management sims. Only problem I see is the game is relatively old school and the graphics are extremely basic. But that's completely forgivable in this sort of game; where number simulations are more important and graphics could be distracting. When I actually figure out how to play the game I'll be able to give a bit more of a review.
