In Brief:
Village Defense a is a top down action survival shooter; not a tower defense game (as I first assumed). It 'may have' originally been given away on the 11th April 2011 where it received a less than positve response with only 44% of the community giving it a positive review from 296 votes with 36 comments which you can read HERE; however, I'm not entirely sure whether the one given away back in 2011 was the same game (in fact I'm almost certain) because there are a number of games available with the same or similar name. According to Steam, this version of Village Defense was released in 2021.

This version was definitely given away on the 4th November last year, where it received an even worse score than the original, with only 38% of the community giving it a positive vote; however, the number of votes was vastly reduced at only 21 votes, with only 4 comments, that were unrelated to the actual game; two of which were mine and the other two from two long term community members who have been posting comments here for many many years.

You can see a video of game play via the Steam store page HERE; there are no Steam community member reviews of the game.

The Game:
Village Defense initially appears to be a never ending single level where you are attacked by waves of creatures; however, there are more levels, but no indication as to how many (though, pressing the right arrow key appears to scroll through each level, but if you continue to scroll to the right the game crashes and throws up an error window; each level taking several minutes to beat. levels are is divided into two stages . You can see how far you have progressed in both stages via the bar at the bottom middle of the screen. The first stage shows a black bar moving to the left. when it is full it changes to red and the bar then moves back to the left. When it reaches the far left you win the level. Each new level introduces more enemies. The first stage only casues damage to your character if they touch you, but as you progress to the next level you are fired upon by some of the new creatures.

You can see the route creatures take at some points by red worm like squiggles on a blue background, but these are not always present.

You have limited ammunition of three types, which you can scroll thorugh using the mouse wheel . You can see the amount of each ammunition you have in the top left of the screen just below the life bar. You can pick up extra ammunition of all types, plus health (hearts) that is dropped following the destruction of the enemy attacking you. The game is controlled by the mouse, using the mouse pointer to direct your weapon and the left mouse button to fire and the WASD keys for the character to move around the arena while defending your shrines, which are in the form of a cluster of diamonds. Each diamond has a health bar. If all the shrines are destroyed you lose the game.

Conclusion:
Although very basic, and the fact it has garnered poor reviews from the giveaway community previously; I missed this the last time it was given away due to being away for most of the day, and the first time this was given away, I suspect it was a flash version of a more traditional form of tower defense. Technically, this isn't a tower defense game because there are no towers, instead you have a character that is able to move around the arena, shooting all the attackers using the left mouse button, i.e. a top down action survival shooter .

I wasn't impressed initially, but after getting used to the controls and understanding the mechanics of the game, I actually quite liked the game. It could do with a help section that tells you what you need to know. I had to guess the process while playing the game. It's not a game I'd play frequesntly and for extended periods; but it is (like many of these games from Falcoware) a reasonable coffee/tea break game, that I will be keeping.

I am almost positive that the original giveaway from 2011 was the flash game which you can get free from My Real Games, however, if you install any flash game now, you will get a pop up from the developer of Flash (Adobe) saying that support ended and they suggest deleting flash. If you refuse, it will pop up every several weeks with the same message. I still like playing the odd flash game so keep it installed.

You can fine the flash version of the game HERE; I've not downloaded it so cannot confirm its efficacy. If you do decide to download it, I would suggest you scan the download before executing the installer to be sure it's safe..

Notes on Security

I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 58 antimalware engines.

The downloaded executable 'may' include some low level adware that only opens your browser once to Falcoware's home page after the game has installed and also places four shortcuts onto your desktop (which can be safely deleted once the game has installed).

The installation does NOT inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to Falcoware's home page following the games installation, it earns Falcoware games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away free. Once you've installed the game, there are no more browser redirections. This is because Falcoware removed their installer over a year ago (that installer would show an advert for a game and then open your browser each time you played and then closed the game down.)

You can see the results of the scan via the following link:

Whiterabbit-uk,

Other Free Games:
For other free games, please check Delenn's threads over in the giveaway forums HERE (non Steam games) and HERE (Steam games) for the latest freebies; it's kept up to date frequently, whenever a free game becomes available, (thanks for keeping this up to date Delenn, very much appreciated).

Also for the latest Steam sales check THIS Steam database site out. You can list the games in 'price' & 'percentage off' by clicking the headers. If you link SteamDB with your Steam account, all games that you already have will be highlighted in green and those in blue are on your wish list. When there are Steam games being given away, you'll see the percentage off as 100%. It's worth checking this regularly to make sure you don't miss the best deals and freebies. Delenn usually posts links to all free games within several hours of them going live, so check her links at the top of this comment as well.
Don't forget to check Indie Gala's freebie section HERE, then click on the Showcase header, selecting freebies from the drop down menu; the most recent additions include:

1) ... The Last Enchantress: Revival, (choice-based fantasy game, contains adult themes and not suitable for children)

2) ... Revolution Ace (vertical scrolling shmup)

3) ... Avani: The Primal Land (Explore, gather, learn, craft and build in the world of Avani: The Primal Land. Fight, hunt and tame wild animals. Animals have their own genetics and no animal is like the other. The interactive taming process allows making a real bond with each tame. Avani offers a unique crafting system combined with a huge skill tree and an intuitive building system mixed with traditional survival game elements)

4) ... Cov Shooter (Try to survive as many waves as possible, upgrade your stats and weapons to do that)

5) ... WTC : Relentless Protagonist [Sxs}, (a short mostly KINETIC comedy/drama visual novel)

6) ... Pixel Puzzles 2: Space, (jigsaw puzzle)

7) ... Out of Puberty: Chapter 1 (graphic novel, contains adult themes and not suitable for children)

8) ... Neon Invasion Earth, (space invaders)

The following (previously) free games have now been removed from the free library: Six Sides of the World, Byte Family, Alone on Mars, Garfield Kart, Nostradamus the Last Prophecy, Snowball, Pixel Puzzles 2: Christmas , Die Young (Full version), Distortions, Dino Run DX, Cheap Golf, Kill Em All, Dead Hungry Diner, and Contract with the Devil. All remaining freebies can be found in the showcase section (113 games are available). Not all games that go into the showcase remain free and are removed after a short period; so, you should grab them as soon as you can.

The latest Epic freebie is now Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair; it's a brand-new platform adventure from some of the key creative talent behind 'Donkey Kong Country'. With their arch-nemesis Capital B up to no good the buddy duo needs to spring into action once again to save the day!

Next Thursday 10th February we will be getting Windbound - Shipwrecked alone on an uncharted island, explore, adapt and navigate the land and perilous seas to stay alive. As Kara, you are a warrior, caught at sea in a fierce storm, adrift from your tribe. Thrown from your boat, at the mercy of the turbulent waters, you are tossed on to the shores of the Forbidden Islands, a mysterious paradise.
The best Indie Bundles sites that have been operating from around 2011 are the Humble Bundle and Indie Gala sites (though the latter isn't as good as it used to be) where you'll sometimes find decent bundles with over 90% off the usual price of the games included in the bundles. The Humble site is in my opinion the best; though a more recent addition that is worth checking out called Fanatical games looks to be a serious contender for that title as they have some very good bundles. You can find Fanatical games (that used to be called Bundle stars) HERE.

I've restarted a project I originally started back in 2008 that used to be called Good Games to Grab, where I posted free games over in the forums on a daily basis. I won't be posting them daily this time; only as and when I have time and the inclination. You can find the new forum section entitled 'Free Game Project' HERE

So far I've posted eight excellent PC games, plus one android game as well as suggested or linked to others similar to the ones posted i.e.

1) ... Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe (a squad based solo shooter)
2) ... Battlegroup 44 (a free standing mod for Battlefield 2 that is a follow up to the original Battlefield 1942)
3) ... Slam Tilt (an excellent pinball game with four tables)
4) ... 3-D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night, (one of my all time favorite pinball games from the mid 90's).
5} ... Breakquest (one of my all time top ten 2D breakouts)
6) ... Messy Paths (an android game)
7) ... Castlevania The Lecarde Chronicles (fan made free standing Castelvania game)
8) ... Conflict Vietnam (third person squad based shooter)
9) ... Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2006 Trophy Season (a linear hunting game)

I'll be adding over the coming weeks.

Black And White Apocalypse that was given away about two weeks ago by the developer hammergames is always free and can also be downloaded as a colour version. The community member Space pointed this out at the time. You can find both versions over on itch.io via the following links. Black & White version, and Coloured version. :)

You can also find 'all nine' of the developers games (for free) HERE. Some of them look like they are worth investigating. :)

The latest Humble Choice bundle went live on Tuesday and includes eight games plus one dLC pack; i.e. Borderlands 3 with the directors cut DLC included, Black Book, Per Aspera, Just Die Already, Before We leave, Paradise Lost, Everhood and Calico. For original Humble Bundle subscribers the cost is $12/£8.99 with other benefits such as access to a lot of indie titles for free while subscribed and a percentage off other purchases from the Humble store. This increases the longer you keep subscribed up to a year with 20% off all none bundle purchases. (1 month sub' gives 10% off, 3 months sub' gives 15% off and six months sub'gives 17% off)

If you have Amazon Prime, the February games are now available. You can get Stellaris on GOG for free. Visit Prime Gaming for details.

Stay safe everyone.
