Wow, just wow!

As a Flash game this would have been execrable. As a standalone app, it just shows how lazy and poor programmers have become. Nothing in this steaming pile of ripped off ideas, poorly implemented, and without any -any- merit application is worth even a flicker of attention. A shameless take on tower defense, without an original idea or twist to be found. Perhaps intended for the Android marketplace (they love this shovel shit there) -- this thing reeks of no-idea, no-concept, no-purpose, NO-FUN ethos.

Avoid if you the last thing you enjoyed was anything better than a dose of the clap.

Only played a little of this so far, but seems to be an interesting/challenging game. Haven't played this genre game before so it is taking me a little getting used to.
Thanks GGOTD and the developers for making this possible.
D/L'd and installed with no problems on my Win7/64bit Home Premium laptop.
Two thumbs up from me.

Without reading the comments of others do I base this statement.

Installation was fine, sad that it didn't create a desktop icon
on it's own. Graphics were ok (I wasn't expecting 3d awesomeness
as I knew what was up via pics) however.. game would benefit from
a grid placement scheme for building placement (something that can
be learned from major RTS games, dune2000-starcraft2 as examples.

Wasn't able to place buildings precisely where I wanted an sometimes
when in a rush to defend buildings wouldn't deploy, it seemed that
when slowing mud was placed it affected the ability to place other
buildings near/close to it in such a way as to either disable
placement or force me to place said building farther away.

Maps might need to be larger to handle land & air attack concepts
to allow for more room for defense placements in the future, this
depends on where the dev is planning to take this.

The menu system seems to freeze up in full screen/maximize mode
I'm unsure as to why or what might be the cause, however for the
dev's knowledge this occured on a win xp pro sp3 system with full
updates an the latest of all drivers, no spyware/viruses as i'm
fairly a zealot about these things.

Also not always but sometimes I noticed units would spawn off road
alignment. Might want to look into that.

Otherwise I look forward to future developments on this game an
"hope" that when pc perfected a iphone version might become available.

PS: instead of charging for the game presently I'd open it on beta
status an work out any remaining kinks. Once you've got that all
done you might be able to sell it for $1 pc and $2 iphone ^.^

the description above says: "25 incredibly addictive levels with different approaches", but it only has 13 levels!? i dont think this is even the full version of the app. the game isn't even challenging enough to be interesting. its too monotonous :/

Interesting game. I have never tried this type of game before and I'm not so sure I like it enough to keep playing it. There doesn't seem to be a lot of interaction except for sticking buildings here and there. But then again, perhaps that is the point of the game. It just seems like something is missing. I will have to check out the other tower defense games mentioned by other people here because I like the TD concept.

Yes, finally saw that awesome :) list...Thanks- that should keep us going for quite awhile-nice selections there.
oh,earlier I had just finished my post & without closing nor minimizing the window I just went for the install, and the confirm page hid the forum, after giving the defense a run thru I went and grabbed my happy camperette who got a few smiles & levels of destroying dem invaders too LOL- (then sadly, reality crept in & I had to go be the handyman thing- sad that I make a living outta other peoples grief- in that when they break it, yea- I can usually fix it)

....................Moderator Comment........................

I need a handyman. Not that I'm not practical. I've always done my own repairs/decorating/plumbing/electrics/vehicle maontainance; but can no longer due to the accident I had five years ago. I intend employing a handman to do most of the jobs I used to do. Glad you found the synopsis etc. There ar so many great games available. We have many more to post over the coming months and maybe even years, so do drop in and check whats available. I intend updating the synopsis very soon. :)

This is a cute little short time waster. it is trial and error until you catch on..then it's fun. But I turned that music off rather quickly. Drove me nuts couldn't concentrate on the game for the music.

This will be my first review as I am more of a lurker and tend to just look at the feedback and download popular games. However, it seems there are fewer and fewer games being offered so I will try to do my part to boost enthusiasm from designers. My first impression was the broken English and the Lower graphics didn't really give an air of professionalism right away. However, once the action starts there isn't any more distracting dialog or any time to stop and smell the roses. When commenting, I've taken into account that the designer eventually wants to be competitive and charge good money for their games so being "free" was not a consideration.

Pros: The game is simple to grasp right away but very fun at higher levels. It has chess / old school Atari Missile Command feel to it.

Cons: Intro needs translation work for a more professional feel. Levels are a some what mismatched as far as difficulty is concerned. Also, over all difficulty needs to be bumped up a few levels if the game is to only have a dozen levels. The lower levels need to be more difficult while higher levels need to be almost impossible. Graphics need some improvements in the long run in order to compete in general but are least important on my list for this type of game.

Ideas for improvement: Multiple towers to protect in higher levels. Let the enemy fire on the towers when with in range but in turn create resources such as a fire crew to put out flames and a construction crew to repair damages and fortify towers so that levels last longer.

I have a different type of question : My 12 yr old son loves the games and plays most that I get. (Thanks GOTD!) I've been downloading them on my computer, and in May I will be getting my son his own computer for his birthday. Can the games in my computer be put on CDs or DVDs so that he can play them on his own computer when he gets it?
Thanks for your help, and I always love reading your reviews! I read the reviews and not play the games, my son just plays every game and doesn't need reviews. 99% of them he has really enjoyed playing and I have the half full hard drive to prove it! Lol Thanks again for any help about this!

......................Moderator Comment...............................

Unfortunately once the game giveaways 24 hour giveaway period is over it's not allowed that you should transfer games from one computer to another or back them up to DVD etc. Sorry. :(

Here is what is wrong with this game. It is simply not intuitive. I am sure after great reading I can figure out how to play this. But it is not a self starting game. It is one big guess as to how to make things happen. Okay if you are into a steep learning curve. Sucks, if you just want to play a game.

.........................Moderator comment......................

The game doesn’t have a steep learning curve. The rules are simple; that is, place the towers near roads near to where attackers are coming in from and you'll see that the tower becomes active. (Some community members seem to have been having problems placing turrets. Changing to full screen (via the windows like maximize button to the top right of the window) may help to alleviate this problem. You can place as many as your resource/money will allow. As the towers destroy enemies, you will earn more resources which can then be used to purchase more turrets or other defensive structures such as the swamp (which slows down attackers, or for a quick kill, the kamikaze.

~this is kool, my first intro to this style & I can move my mouse quick enough to get in front of em...I'm thinking "someone" got hung up with placing & the double click -stay with it you'll catch on.hmmm, and I'm gonna need those flying defences soon I think..:)
~ I 4 1 am glad these DO NOT put more icons across the desktop, but then again I figured out how to go to c/users/'thispc/whatever'/games-
now as soon as I fugger out how to:
*make the screen size a tad bigger
I'd be a happy camper-
This is installed easy on my Vista Home, no bells or whistles going off & I gots some of those goody 2 shoses scanners onboard that are pretty persnickity sometimes.
A big thanks from me for a fun intro into this style-

......................Moderator comment.....................

Just click on the box to the top right of the game window; (just like a windows minimizer/maximiser), it will change the window into full screen mode. Sorry, I forgot to mention that in my review, lol. Did you check my reply to your last comment? ;)

I want to like this game but there is no help available that is worthwhile. I have no idea how to set the towers once I click on them.

I select a tower then try to set it by the road and all it does is float around. And each time I move the cursor the tower floats around with it. What would be so difficult to give some basic instructions. All they tell you is what things do. Not how to do them. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

.......................moderator comment.........................

Once you've picked up a tower, by clicking on the menu to the right of the playing arena, you have to select a place you want to place the tower and left click to leave it in place. The collision mesh is very sensitive and won't let you place the towers anywhere. Try and place them so that they don't touch any of the roads, but as close as possible so that you maximise the towers defences. It's a little bit of trial and error, but once you get it, it'll be easy.

Game works on Windows 7 x64 without problems. Gameplay is very much like Defense Grid, just much simpler. Suggestions I have would be alot more levels, more time to view the city and start planning before the attack, and fullscreen play. I like the general idea and gameplay, but it is yet another copy of most other tower defense style games. This version is just for some short fun, it will be completed within about a half hour. Graphics are very simple, but are sufficient for the type of game.

.....................Moderator Comment..................

Yes I agree with all your suggestions. I think Wheemplay have a good clutch of games, all of which could be improved and i'm sure if they did they would get a good name for themselves. although do read comments from previous giveaways as there has been problems with purchases.

I know there are alot of game making newbies out there struggling with designing & sharing for input.....as well as too many bored new PC users of all ages....for example-I actually run into alot of Seniors who wear out the stock shipped games on their pc, and the few I have been able to share this site with really appreciated learning about it-( enough to bring me homade cookies...LOL )-

Thanks for your comment T Mike; that’s actually a good idea, re posting the request for appropriate feedback. I think I’ll add it to my reviews from now on.

Have you checked out the free games project? We have posted around 2000 free games over the past two and a half years, many of which used to be commercial games, but were either converted to freeware by their authors or were abandoned when developers went bust, so became abandonware. There are loads of brilliant games of almost all genres available from the project. there's a sticky on the front page of the forumsr you can just click on the following link:

Free Games Synopsis:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/4534

plus there’s a browser games synopsis as well. I've not kept the synopses up to date. The last four or five months games that have been posted in the games discussion forums have yet to be added to the synopsis. It's well worth checking out the games discussion forums for these games, especially those games posted by Chazzo, who has gone to great lengths to find some amazing freebies. Please pass this information on to those elderly people. I'm sure they will think it's a treasure trove. :)

You can access the game discussion forums via the following link and the second link is to the Browser games synopsis:

Games discussion Forums:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/forum/17

Free Browser Games synopsis:

Also if you install Alawar’s Gamebox (which is free you can get free games once a month. You can get the game box via the following link:
http://www.alawar.com/item/alawar-game-box/

This months game is called Magic Ball 3 (or Smash Ball 3 – it’s had a name change)

You can get a free weekly game from Sandlot Games via the following link:

http://www.sandlotgames.com/w5/

This week’s game is called Ballistik a Magic Ball clone, which although basic is worth downloading. It’s very similar to the original Magic Ball, with now tired looking graphics, but the game play is still okay. The game will change on Monday. The games cycle through every 12 to 16 weeks, so you’ll end up with around 16 free games, some of which are excellent games. Most genres are included. You will need to create a free account before being able to download the games. You can find the free game link to the bottom left of the home page. Make sure you uncheck the CD option before you proceed with the order. (You have to go through the process of buying the game, but no card details are required and the total amount will show up as zero).

If you keep your eyes on the game discussion forums you’ll see most game offers being posted. There’s a time management game available at the moment from Legacy Games called Fever Frenzy, and you’ll find a game giveaway from Gamehouse, though all their games are advert supported. You’ll find a thread in the game discussion forums. :) Tadays free game from Gamehouse is called Cat Wash. You’ll see a link to the top left of the home page, via the following link:

Todays game download stats:

Village Defense has a lower uptake so far compared to most other games that have been given away recently with 4432 downloads 13 hours into the game giveaway. That's still 5.68 downloads per minute or one every 8.9 seconds.

Thanks Whiterabbit for your reviews. I intend to give this game a try.

Your comments in #8, about game prices,is certainly reflected in this game as it's regular price is only 99 cents.

And your comments in #15 are right to the point. Losers that just want to put you or other commenters down. They don't come for games or reviews. They come to belittle others and nit pick everything.

Keep up the good work

Thank you Joe. I wouldn't normally respond to such comments as they deserve just to be ignored, but to be honest I'm just a little fed up of them at the moment. (Plus I'm in a bad mood, lol). All that particular poster has done since he started posting is post comments about other posters plus one questioning the title of a game; even then he got the context wrong as Capitation 'plus full stops are used to denote abbreviations not just capitals as he supposed. ;)

p.s. to the community, I apologise for going off task. I should have just not allowed the post through, but I do believe in free speech up to a point, so will let such comments through.

I guess that this game is for experienced gamers. The game seems to run OK but "How to Play" tells little, other than list your types of weapons. I can move the towers around but not place them & they kill nothing. As of now it is worth 0. I may experiment mopre later. As always, a good review, Whiterabit-uk.

........................Moderator comment.....................

Hi Marshall, the placement of the towers does seem a little hit and miss. Something to do with what I think is called a collision mesh. The roads seem to have a barrier to them if you try to place them too close as do other towers. You need to leave a little space between any object and the roads. a little experimentation will reveal the tolerances. (Hopefully). :)

"Addictive" to describe games, the cliché has been beaten to death.

...................Moderator comment...................

Speak for yourself, as far as I'm concerned, addictive is descriptive enough for the purpose of this review. Why don't you comment on the game instead of nit-pick on the use of words in the review. Sheesh!

That's all you seem to do when you comment:
For example on the 27th March 2011 in answer to the following comment by a community member
I don’t know if I can save my progress on this one or not; only played for 2 minutes.” you wrote:
Why not play for 4 minutes, and then maybe you might know? And from the same game giveaway in response to my comment “It’s a space shooter reminiscent of a 3D space invaders clone , though in reality its nothing like space invaders” you said “ confused”, then went on to say in a later post “well is it is, or isn’t it?”. And finally back in February 2011 you said "Why is Incinerate spelled INCINERATE. What do the letters mean?" again I say Sheesh! I see no constructive comments about the games in any of these posts only digs at other community members or the way the game has been presented.

Thanks. Win 7 x32 Ultimate.
Yup a pleasant little time waster for short bursts. Tried first 6 levels and stopped to leave room for more later. Can't eat all the candy at once. No biggie in the high end spec range as mentioned but for a freebie & fans of TD format what the heck.
Nice to be able to win for a change & replay value helps. Come on guys it's a freebie, nothing killer but pleasant enough. Ignore the amateurish opening stuff of misspellings and such that give it a Game Maker look. Just play a few levels & watch as the AI tries to get the main tower. Can be crafty at back door moves.
2/10 on a pro level. 5/10 on basic level. 7.5/10 if a TD fan.

Game loaded fine on Vista Business.

Graphics and sound could be improved but it did not detract from the game. I do not play this type of game so I will not compare it to others. I enjoyed the diversion yet it took less than 20 min to beat. I would have liked to seen 30+ levels and may be some speed changes as the levels increase. All in all it was fun and I would try another game like this in the future.
I would suggest an Iphone app for this game....seems to be positioned well for that environment.

Have I missed some games between the 2nd and the 8th April ?

.....................Moderator comment......................

If you downloaded Alien Rocket wars last week, then no you've not missed any games. Although the title suggests a game every day, that's no longer the case. we used to get a game every day of the week, including weekends up until March 2008, when the well went dry. The main culprit was the world recession and some developers started up their own giveaways, for example Gamehouse, who have given away a lot of games over the past 2 years, though all of their games are ad supported, Alawar games who give a game away every month (apparently this month’s game is Magic ball 3 a very colourful and interesting 3D breakout that's had a name change and is now called Smash Ball 3), Sandlot games give a game every week, though they are on a repeating cycle of about 12 to 16 weeks, so effectively they are giving up to 16 games away , some of which are very good IMO), then you get the occasional free game from Big Fish Games. anyway, to the point, since game prices crashed 9when the game giveaway started the average price of most arcade games was nearly $20 and now you can get the same sort of games for as little as a fe dollars, the game giveaway has struggled to get a lot of games, so we only get them at weekends and even then it's patchy. We also need more feedback from the community, that is either positive or negative feedback, but more than just this game is cr%$, or this game is Great. We need reasons why and suggestions for improvements. Hopefully that will then bring in more Gamehouse; if only to get informed feedback from the community. I just wish more community members would see that this is the way forwards if we are to get more and better games. :)

Having never played a TD game before thought that I should start with simple or easy.

Thanks GOTD, Wheemplay and Whiterabbit for again an excellent review. As I have said before, I am not downloading without reading your intake first.

Thanks Cheryl, though please do be aware that my reviews are only an opinion. I'm totally grabbed by gaming, so usually only have positive things to say. I remember the first games that became available to the general public and always marvel at how things have been improved to the point that we should all be able to make games now with all the free game engines/editors that are available, whereas 20 years or more ago, you needed to know programming languages to make even the simplest of games.

First of all, the game did not create a shortcut to the desktop.
Second, there was a spelling mistake in the explanations: "The villagers WAS enraged" when it should have written were enraged instead!
Third, the graphics are too basic, and the drawings even more basic.
Fourth, the game itself is pretty simple. It would need elaborate.
Fifth, even my daughter dislikes this game.

As a result, I will delete the game. I found better freeware games in http://www.caiman.us !

........................Moderator Comment..........................

Hi Mary, most game giveaways don't create shortcuts. Which I think is partly to do with the way the game has been wrapped (for security purposes). I've mentioned where to look when you install the game under installation in my short review at comment # 1. Sorry it's too simple looking for you and thank you for your review. Hopefully the developer will take heed of your reasons for not wanting to keep the game and improve on some of the games features. :)

Yeah, another Wheemplay game :)
I have to say it again: I love these short games and I love puzzle games. Even though I'm not an avid TD fan, I enjoy playing this one.

Since I have seen the link to http://www.physicsgames24.com/ on the Wheemplay site, my Steam games and other voluminous games are eating dust. It's cool that you can even download those browser games.

Thanks again to GGOTD and Wheemplay for some more fun, and WR for the review.

Village Defence: A Review:

Installation:

The game downloads to a 6.64Mb zip file that unpacks to a read me and dual activation module (Set up and activation wrapped together). The game is installed directly to:

C:\Games\Village Defence.exe

with no folders, just the game executable, which is 6.25Mb in size. As with all Wheemplay games you require a flash player to play Village Defence and there is no shortcut to both the desktop and start menu/program folder; also there are no registry entries, so to fully uninstall Village Defence just delete the installed executable via the path posted above.

The game works on all my windows installations which includes Win XP Pro 32 bit, Vista Home Premium 64 bit and Win 7 Pro and Ultimate 64 bit installations; so the game should play on most systems that have a flash player installed.

Introduction:

Village Defence is a very basic Tower Defence (TD) game with loads of replayability and addictive game play, (especially if you enjoy playing Tower Defence games); it's an ideal break time game to fill in those few moments spare you may have between jobs or other A listed games. The following is the developers introduction to the game:

You are commander of defensive forces. You must defend all 12 sectors of village from invaders. You have building materials, 3 types of towers and mad-kamikaze-villagers at your command.

The Game:

To complete a level you must build defensive towers on empty plots of land; you should place the towers as close to the road as possible for maximum effectiveness. Enemies will travel along the road system and if they reach the main building they will destroy it and you lose the game. Unlike most Tower Defence games, there are multiple routes that the enemy can take, all at the same time, so ensure you’ve covered all approaches to the main building, otherwise you’ll quickly lose the level. There are 25 levels in total to play. Not a lot, but they are fairly addictive and can be played many times with different outcomes. You need to build towers as fast as you can, using the resources you gain from killing them.

Along the bottom of the playing arena you will see three sets of figures. The left number is the cumulative score counter, the middle number is the amount of resources you have for building tower defences and the number next to the red heart is the main building life. There are many buildings that can be destroyed, but only when the main building is destroyed will the level end. There is also a ‘How to Play button to the top of the paying arena to the right of the level score.

In Tower Defence games the important fact to remember is that defensive tower placement is very important, especially during the early part of the game. Look for the most effective placements that cover the maximum amount of road; these are usually crossroads or where the road turns at right angles to itself.

There are various defence units available, from the Simple Tower that’s relatively cheap to purchase (150), and will attack all ground units. There are also more expensive towers (400) that you are able to move by double clicking on them, these cost more than the static towers, but are worth it when you have multiple paths to cover because you can move them to the areas with most enemy activity. There are also Air Towers that attack only air units. These give more damage than the basic towers, and cost only a little more (200). There are also other defences such as the Kamikaze cars. These can only be used once, cost a medium amount of money (200) and can inflict a massive amount of damage. Finally there are swamps that reduce the speed of the enemy onslaught which cost 200. The most effective use of swamps is near groups of turrets so that you can take advantage of maximum firepower. Towers can be upgraded to make them more effective by left clicking on them once. You can upgrade each tower up to five times; each upgrade giving the tower a slightly larger area to cover. When placing towers you will see the defensive range that the tower has by clicking on it. when placing the towers, try to take account of the area that the tower may cover if upgraded. Double clicking on movable towers will enable you to move them. You gain resources for every enemy unit you kill, which you can then invest in more units, or upgrades.

Once a level is unlocked you can play it in any order you wish by selecting it from the levels map. Locked levels remain unplayable until you've won the preceding level at which point it will unlock. Progress is saved by levels. You cannot return to a partially finished level when closing the game down.

Music can be turned off via the speaker toggle that is present to the top left of the playing area.

Conclusion:

Despite it’s very basic look, (low end graphics), this simple Tower Defence (TD) game is worth downloading in my opinion. I did initially said it was an excellent game with a hard difficulty, but that was on the basis of a very short game play session; I needed to write up the review, so didn't play for long. That was a mistake and I have edited this conclusion to reflect that my changing opinion. I'd still say this is worth downloading, but don't expect too much; it's ideal for filling in a few moments here and there, but extended game play may become a little wearing as there is little variability in the game play and there are not that many choices of defensive towers compared to most other TD games that I know of.

The main difference between this and most TD games is that you get enemies coming in from all directions at the same time, so you need to place your towers at optimum places (as mentioned in the game description above). There are supposed to be 25 levels (according to the information found at the developers site), but the levels map indicates only 13 levels. I've not played that far into the game to confirm whether there are 25. If anyone does play past level 13 please let us know, thank you.

I would say that because of the multiple routes the enemy take in each level, the game has a lot of replayability and therefore I think this game is worth at least a 6 out of 10 for game play. Sounds are worth 4 and Graphics on the other hand score very poorly at only 2 out of 10, but in my opinion these are only ancillary to the game itself. However averaging out the score the total is 4 out of 10. That said please don't let the low score and simple looking graphics put you off at least trying this game; gameplay is far more important in my opinion; despite the negative comments so far you may be missing out on a game you find fairly decent.

For those who 'love' Tower Defence games this is 'probably' a must have. ;-), but if you're not to enamoured of TD games then you'll find much better via the links I've posted in the forums.

I posted a list of links to various tower defence games both browser and downloadable in the forums last week in responce to a request for free TD games. I also included a few commercial versions of the game; so, if you want to check out more Tower Defence games then click on the following link to find a whole bunch of links leading to many TD games:

I highly recommend one of the latest TD games to hit the scene called Sanctum. It’s unusual in that you play it in first person. You can get it via Steam for 10% off at the moment. It's still on pre-order, but you get to play the Beta right away. Others that are highly addictive include Defence Grid: The Awakening, which now includes additional level packs Watch out for the next Steam sale which could be over the Easter break, where you’ll probably get this for a steal), or get the Potato Sack that includes 13 top notch Indie games including Defence Grid, or buy it for 50% off at the moment for only £3.45 {~$5}… the offer ends soon … see the forums for details of all 13 games. You can get Monster Mash a fun TD game from Sandalot for free every 12 weeks or so via their free game of the week. The latter was available for free last week and will come around again in about 12 weeks’ time. There is also a couple more new one's out via Steam called Anomaly: Warzone Earth that is calling itself a reverse TD game because you play as the attacker instead of defence. :) It looks amazing and from the game play videos, looks like the game play is fantastic. (I’m going to get it as soon as I can afford to). ;=), also there's Revenge of the Titans a retro looking TD game with hidden depths.

Suggestions to the developer

• Improve the basic graphics. Unfortunately this may put off a section of the community that think graphics make a game.

• Give each level a different look (using different building types and backgrounds so that the game looks a little more interesting. Keeping the same format throughout the game leads to a feeling of ‘I’ve played this level countless times’, which is a pity because even though the basic game play isn't very innovative it's still fairly decent.

• Add more tower types. There are only five different defensive structures in this game; far fewer that most TD games.

• Add a levels editor and the ability to create larger maps. This would increase the difficulty of the game as you could create more complex routes.

• Create different difficulty levels, which would effectively increase the number of levels by the number of difficulty levels you create.

Problems:

Apart from the usual non placement of a shortcut and absence of an uninstaller (you can uninstall the game just by deleting the game executable found by default at C:\Games\Village Defence.exe) the only other problem I found was the end of level stats. They showed only zero's, though the cumulative score worked. This should be fixed if possible.

Edit:

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention. The game starts in windowed mode. The window is just like a typical window with a maximiser/minimizer button to the top righthand portion of the window you can change the windowed game to full screen. I much prefer full screen mode.
