I challenge all the "repeat" moaners and "no good games" whingers to contact your game software company of choice and get them to offer something on here.

Why complain about someone else not doing what you want, when you will not do it yourself...

I really really wanted this game for my young grandson, however it crashed when double clicked the .exe file.

Shame because this is the only time I've ever had a game that wouldn't work.

Even today I am happily ploughing the landscape ... :)

That's strange. I decided to try my copy of Tiny Cars after reading all the comments that said they were having problems and find it now no longer works. It definitely worked when I installed it, but have not tried it since, until this morning. I just keep getting

"Tiny Cars.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close -------"

Doesn't work. Crashes right away on start up. Tried on two Win XP machines.

Normally, I don't comment regarding the games or software give-a-away but I must agree we do have so stop whining about what is free; even if they are repeats. Even though the games/software is free if you don't like/don't use -then so be it. For those of us that like it and use then comment on the technical problems with game-which will help the developer.

For me personally, the games are an extra bonus as I download it for a group of kids who look forward to the free full versions of the games. They don't mind that they are full of extreme graphics, music, etc. they just happy they don't have to pay full price. The price of any of cheapest PC game is around 9.99 at Staples, Office Depot, etc. Maybe sometimes Big Lot's will have games for 6.99. Game console games start at $19.99 for close-outs and $49.99 for New Release. Free, always beats not having to pay any money.
Plus, some of the games are easy for them to learn and teach some skills. As for me the software that I like download the others I leave.
Either way, this site is a win-win especially in these difficult times. With the economy being so bad; I'm happy and my group of kids are happy that this site has existed so long.

#69. Thanks for the feedback Whiterabbit. Really appreciate your links for free games. I did try updating the drivers for the built-in graphics card on the Toshiba laptop a week or two ago. I tried installing the complete package which included the Catalyst Control Center. I could not access the Control Center after install. I also tried to install only the drivers which was a mistake; I got a completely blank (black) display. I booted up in safe mode to restore the computer. I bought this computer used last month. According to the individual I purchased it from, it was purchaed new less than a year ago.

#2, I'm seeing the same thing. With only two instead of seven a week, this really amounts to very few a month. Sadly, the really good ones like Alien Shooter aren't repeated often. When Mad Cars was offered again, there was an installation trick for Vista users that I didn't know about, so I basically got a trial version after the long wait. I will say that if there is an installation 'trick' such as having to run it as admin, including that info somewhere, maybe the 'readme' would be helpful to some of the general users who aren't computer experts. Again, it's hard to evaluate something you can't use, and that defeats the whole purpose of the site.

Hi jmv,

It could be your graphics drivers? See if you have the latest drivers, or just download and install the latest ones. They are readily available from the ATI website. Just follow the link below; choose which operating system you’re using and then follow the on screen prompts:

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Hopefully installing the latest drivers will sort out the glitches. If not, try defragging your hard drive. Sometimes if a program is badly fragmented, it can cause all sorts of unusual things to happen, including graphical glitches.

As usual, i notice a bunch of people griping about repeats! What they forget is that 1)there are people who havent seen this site before, 2)if you get a new machine you cannot transfer games from one pc to another like the "old days" 3) They are FREE!!!!! I was very glad they repeated jet 'n' Guns as i had to reformat the drive it was held on! Some people are just plain ungrateful! GGOTD needs to give a broad spectrum of games, some need to be "easy" for kids, some harder for adults. I haven't downloaded one for 3 months, but I dont waste my time griping about the offering that day. If you dont like GGOTD just go elsewhere (eBay, Amazon etc) and buy a game! Keep up the good work GGOTD!

Follow-up to #64: Installed on a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista SP1 with an integrated ATI graphics card. Was able to run the program, though the topmost part of the screen was flashing. At the bottom, the bottommost left side, the start menu icon was also flashing; don't think it's supposed to be showing.

For everyone the game crashes immediately for (it did for me also), Whiterabbit gave two alternative sites with the supposed same game with a different name available for free at all times. So check out his first post, which is #4. And thanks, #16 Renegade, for the reminder about Trackmania Nations Forever... a truly GREAT free racing game.

For those whove had problems getting this game to work, try the alternatives that I've posted links to in the Wheeled games thread over in the games discussion forums. You can get the link from my first post above. I may have been mistaken about this game being available over at gametop. I'm sure it used to be, but they seem to have removed some games, and I think this is amongst those removed. However, there are some very similar games available.

Installed fine on XP, but crashes when launched. TinyCars.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. The embedded error message:
AppName: tinycars.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: tinycars.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000a2fe

I'm running a current XP SP3 gamer machine and have never had a problem like this. Any start-up settings that might address this?

I highly suggest you to try it,

This game was last given away in December of 2006 so it's been 2 years since we have seen this one. Tiny Cars II was given away in February 2007 and January 2008. I would expect we'll see Tiny Cars II again soon.

The thing I have noticed is that I don't see the same member names (with a couple of exeptions) I used to see when I first came here. Why? Because most of the people that have been here for a long time don't come here much because there is nothing new for them here. They have seen all these games before so they have moved on. Some of them can still be found over in the forums but not here. That should tell GOTD something.. that they are losing people by not having new games to offer that are worth downloading.

Members in the forums are providing games on a daily basis, most notably Whiterabbit and now Wizzard of Oz (Thanks guys!! :) ) with the rest of us helping out where we can. So if you want games you should check out the forums. Some of the games may be to large for those on dial-up but they may be worth the trouble in the long run.

I got the 1st opportunity to try this game, I am luky it is repeated.
Runs excellently on XPSP2. No bugs yet.
Good game for children 5-12 years.
Good nostalgy for ex-1980s gamers (exactly the same difficulty to drive by keyboard, the same graphics - it is the same feeling).
NFS gamers - THIS IS NOT YOUR NICHE GAME, no realistic driving, no crashes and blood. What is not bad.
Thanks GGOTD and Realore.

To those bothered by repeats: if you really want to send the site owner a message, there's no better way than to stop coming here. A declining number of visitors in the logs speaks louder than words. If you want to send a message but don't want to miss out on new games, just subscribe to the RSS feed and only come when there's something worth grabbing. Taking that even further, subscribe via a service like Google Reader rather than directly, as no matter how many G.R. subscribers there really are it will only count as one subscriber in feed access logs.

BE WELL WHITERABBIT!

***************************************************************8

When all is said and done we as individuals make the choice to download.

I paid the price yesterday with a computer laid waste. ( See my post on yesterdays game comments). I made the choice to download it. It wasn't my fault what it did to me but nonetheless, if I didn't make the choice it would not have happened.

People need to realize you aren't going to get Photoshop here or Call to Duty games. This place is for developing companies to try out their wares. GOTD gives them the opportunity to offer it here. GOTD it is appreciated what you do.We choose to be the guinea pigs for them by choosing to download. It is what it is. What happened to me yesterday is the worst case scenario. To be honest, still a complete mystery, as what happened, couldn't happen, but it did.

So download with care.

1st of all, Get better soon White Rabbit, your input and work is greatly appreciated. 2ndly, While I understand the complaints, as a fairly new member here I for one am glad of the "repeats", because to me they are brand new. And being on disability income I could never afford any of these games, no matter the cost. So free to me is always a good deal. I played this game as a trial years ago...and wanted the full thing badly. Imagine my surprise, seeing it given away here!
Of course, the reason I didn't buy it was because, it just wasn't that good that I had to pay 15 dollars.

I just had fun with what I had, and used the trial. Goodbye trial!

Two - not all people who come here are seeing these games as repeats. For many folks today may be the very first day of thier visit. :-)

I don't come often - I'm going to pass on this game, but I've yet to see a repeat. ;-)

It's a catch 22. They won't get new game companies online until they raise the standard above what it is now. And it doesn't matter how big of an apologist anyone is for the site, you'll have to admit that the game given away here are often little more than the kind of fare you'd find coming out of high school programming classes. How many of the giveaways here (including the daily app/util stuff) could actually be bought at BestBuy or Office Depot? Virtually none of them.

They'll never get EA, Activision, Atari, etc., to give stuff away here. It's too rinky-dinky of a site. If they could ever get a few big name, legit companies to give stuff away, it would attract additional real companies to participate.

For the record, I love the idea of the site. I love the business model. I appreciate the free stuff. Bu it is what it is. We don't need to say "shut up whiners" and get all defensive when someone posts an honest comment like this. Until they can raise the bar, this will always have limited appeal.

Just my opinion, however...

Game developers give their games away to reach a wider test base. All the whiners about repeats are just taking up space. They want to hear when a game works and when it doesn't. For example, if they can't get it work on Vista but we can, they want to know how, so they can improve the games. Without honest feedback about the games, there is no reason to offer a game for free.

That said, I did try to get this one to work on Vista, but I also was not able to get compatibility mode to make a difference. Too bad, too.

Hi Fluffy Bunny,

I never said it was a charity, and I realize that the owners of this site are paying a premium for each game that is given away. They are making their money via advertising and subtle links that you’ll find with most posts over in the forums. A lot of the tags have related tags which actually have nothing to do with the subject of the forum post, but do link with other commercial concerns. That’s where the giveaway owners are making their money. All of these giveaways are a loss to them, they are just carrots to make the project high profile on the internet.

Try this and you’ll see what I mean. Go to the forums and post an unusual phrase in one of the forum posts, then go to a good search engine and do a search. It’s a good bet that your phrase will be picked up very quickly because the giveaway project has got a very high standing with internet search engines. This makes the giveaway project a very good way of advertising. All of this isn’t obvious to most when you look on the surface.

Anyway, that still doesn't make it right to whine over something that we the consumer is getting for free. The game giveaway team would be giving us different games every week if they could do, but the developers are just not there any more. I happen to know for sure that Alawar will not be joining in for the foreseeable future because I asked them, (via a personal mail to one of the owners) I really do believe that the whining is partly to blame for it as well. I see where you're coming from Fluffy, but I do not agree with it; and I think if it continues, things are just going to get worse and that will probably sound the death knell for this amazing project. We need to be more positive about things. There are ways of being negative in a positive way by suggesting ways of improving the games instead of calling them rubbish etc. ….

And again I apologize for ranting, my low energy levels and feeling ill are making me short tempered, lol
