Vampire Saga: Break Out
In Brief
Vampire Saga: Break Out is a hidden Object adventure and is the third in the Vampire Saga series. We've been given the first two previously Vampire Saga: Pandora's Box (April 2015) and Vampire Saga: Welcome to Hellock (Oct 11 2015)

Installation Issues:
Vampire Saga: Break Out downloads to a 184 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper the set-up file and a read me). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed if you wish. The installed game is approximately .... MB in size.
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Vampire Saga - Break Out
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop; the shortcut to the game, plus three others ''Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and a shortcut to a free online game. These latter three shortcuts can be deleted once the game has been installed. The Themida wrapper may alert your security and even block the installation; there are details about this issue in the read me that unpacks from the downloaded zip file.

Vampire-Saga-006
The Game:
Vampire Saga: Break Out is actually the third game in the Vampire Saga series from Alawar. The series imagines different stories that revolve around the town of Hill Lock–a cursed town that holds many unsolved but deadly mysteries. The seemingly ordinary town becomes a whole other creature at nighttime when its citizens are suddenly transformed into vampiric monstrosities of the twilight–only these vampires don’t sparkle!
This time, you enter the town of Hill Lock in control of Dr. Crow. Dr. Crow is a pathologist from a nearby town who has been called into Hill Lock to perform an forensics autopsy on a mutilated corpse that was recently discovered in the city. Things will soon go from strange to straight up supernatural when he enters the town to find it has plunged into chaos with many creatures of the night roaming the town’s streets and buildings. As he slowly makes his way to the hospital and begins uncovering the conspiracy in the town, Dr. Crow also begins receiving assistance from strange visions that resemble his recently deceased daughter. The game may begin as a complete mystery, but by the time you’ve completed the game, you’ll have fully grasped the situation and be prepared for the epic ending that doesn’t disappoint.
Vampire-Saga-007

Vampire-Saga-008
The game still features many great game mechanics that Alawar is known for such as the masterfully crafted artwork, interactive worlds and challenging but entertaining hidden object scenes; however, you’ll notice some new changes as well. When searching for items, you’ll now have to click and drag items back to a backpack or some other bag used for carrying multiple objects. You’ll find the objects hidden in these scenes by looking at a picture wheel that shows which and how many items you’ll need to find in order to complete the scene and gain control of some necessary items. You then use these items in a variety of ways that will allow you to progress through the game.
You’ll have a hint meter that constantly recharges after use, so you’ll never get stuck on any part of the game. Of course there are a ton of puzzles as well, and most of them are completely new ideas to Alawar’s brand of games.
One of the downfalls in the game comes in the graphics department. Rather than simply adding animations to the beautiful artwork in the game, Vampire Saga: Break Out often opts to use computer generated graphics that don’t look nearly as smooth, detailed or realistic as the game’s artwork. It’s not something that completely cripples the game, but it, unfortunately, does make it a tad less immersive. The game does offer up some great sound effects and an eerie soundtrack to help make up for the game’s presentation faults however.
Vampire-Saga-008a

Vampire-Saga-009
Vampire Saga: Break Out isn’t the best game available on the Alawar site, but it’s still a whole lot of fun. If you’ve enjoyed their hidden object games in the past or if you just want to continue the story in told in the Vampire Saga series, you’ll want to check out this game.

Conclusion:
HOG's are one of those genres I tend to avoid, but I do enjoy the occasional dabble. I found this one interesting enough to continue playing for a few hours and found the game mildly challenging. As I've never broken into a car before (apart from when I've played Grand Theft Auto) ......spoiler alert..... It took me several minutes to figure out what the ruler (found after the first easy HOG scene) was used for. You'll need to use it before you can proceed. If you enjoyed the first two in the series, you'll also enjoy this one.

Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Vampire Saga: Break Out to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try white-listing the setup.gcd file. In the almost 12 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. Nice graphics, decent play early on in casual mode (expert avail). Sliders for music/sounds. Hints come up fast so play doesn't get stagnant. That ruler thing in beginning at car not so hard to get past. First HOG had well defined pieces using the new method. Only needed one hint to completer that and just to test hint system (though the piece was cleverly placed for a casual fan like me. So far I'm engaged enough to want to see it through. Thanks comments, GOTD.

I downloaded and installed this on 2 different Windows 10, 64 bit computers. On both, it appears to be functioning OK until you get to the menu screen. On the first computer I tried to enter my name and everything just froze. Had to do Ctl Alt Delete to get out. Went back in and just clicked on play, then I could enter my name and it went to a scene with a car in front of a gate, but nothing would happen. Had to do Ctl Alt Delete to get out. That was all the time I had on that computer. Now I installed it on the second computer and got to the scene of the car by the gate. Nothing would happen again. Had to do Ctl Alt Delete to get out. Went back in, but now there was a whole introduction mini move that went on before the menu screen. And now everything functioned properly. Apparently it is a 32 bit program and your computer has to reset to play it properly.

This game will not play on my Windows 10 computer no matter what. Troubleshooting did not do a thing. Lots of these HOGS from this site seem to have the same problem? I am not going to download any more of this old software to my computer: it locks it up when it doesn't work. Get BETTER games!!!

I'm having issues as well. At first I couldn't click on anything without it crashing. I finally got to the point of adding my name but now when it starts I can't do anything. I just see the road and the car in the distance.
- I have the latest Direct X
- I tried every compatibility mode
- I updated my NVDIA drivers and my Intel drivers

It might be due to my 64 bit system. There was a quick flash of an error message and it said 32bit.

Too bad, I really enjoy these types of games. :)
Thanks WhiteRabbit!

Anne Hogan,

Hi Anne, My system is a 64 bit Win 10 pro with the latest updates plus all my important drivers are up to date and I have no problems running the game. That said, to review the game I had to download it directly from MyPlayCity last night.

Maybe it's the giveaway version that is the issue?

Also, check Lynette's comment. I seem to remember when i first installed the game last night i had the same issue. turned it off, then started a gain later. Watched the video, and then was able to play the game.

Whiterabbit-uk, I uninstalled the one and tried the one from PlayCity. I got the same result. :( I waited for the 'pre-video'... are there graphics? It takes forever to load and I get very, very slow dialog.
It ended with the "skip" button at the bottom and a black screen.
Oh well. I know there will be others down the line.
Thanks for all your attention to the feedback.

Anne

Installed on Win 10 Home with no issues so far. I did turn off all virusware before installing. Don't know if it would have mattered, but after reading someone else having an issue, thought I should start there in case I was not allowed to install. All is working.

Windows 10 with latest update on new gaming laptop. Installed easily but simply won't run. Gets to menu screen and crashes every time. Tried administrator settings, various compatibility settings and restarted machine - still crashes. Uninstalled, which is a shame as I like this type of game and sounded fun. Any sensible suggestions gratefully received.

Kestrel,

..................................Moderator comment.....................................

Hi Kestrel, check the FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forums HERE.
Have you updated your graphics drivers recently? If not try that. This game is quite old now; with respect to compatibility settings, did you try running the game in an earlier operating system via the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for .....' ?
Failing that, it may be a conflict with something you are running in the background. Try turning off unneeded background programs one at a time, tying to run the game each time to see if a particular program is the issue; alternatively, and much faster, install the free Game Booster (from Razer). This will temporarily turn off all unnecessary windows background programs and any other programs you configure it to turn off at the touch of a mouse click. When you've finished playing your game, you just have to click on the same button (via Game Booster) to turn everything back on automatically. You can download Game booster free HERE (it's an excellent program if you are running high end games that require a lot of RAM, helps in frame rate issues etc....)

Whiterabbit-uk, Thank you for your time and help. I have tried a variety of compatibility settings and nothing else running with no luck. The machine is only 2 months old and up to date, but I will check again. I will try Game Booster as I trust your advice, I'll let you know how it goes.

Reply   |   Comment by Kestrel  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Kestrel,

I hope you get it sorted?
One thought; even though your security didn't stop the installation (some anti-malware suites do due to the Themida wrapper that is used to protect the games executable), the games installed folder still contains links to websites and some low impact adware (the advert that appears when you first boot up the game); so, it maybe that your security is stopping the game from working?
Try rebooting your computer in Safe mode with networking and see if the game works then. If it does, it confirms that it is your security that is causing issues with the game. If it is that, try white-listing the game with your security, hopefully that will cure the issue. A quicker way would be to temporarily turn off your security, see if the game works, then once confirmed or negated, turn your security back on.
Regards Stephen

Whiterabbit-uk, Stephen, I finally got it sorted by turning off the dedicated graphics card and using base graphics, not something I've come across before! Played it for a while and like it. Many thanks for your help and patience.

Kestrel,

That's good news. The fix would suggest that the software for your graphics card are outdated. Try updating both the graphic drivers for your specific card and Direct X 9.0c. You can find out the details of your graphics card using the free program Speccy HERE, or use Windows Direct X diagnostics; you can find out about this HERE. Type DXDiag in the Search/ run command field to open up the diagnostics panel (you should see a purple/blue circle icon with a yellow X, click on that to open the diagnostics panel), then click on the display tabs to find out which graphic card you are using. You should find the information on Display 1 tab under Devices - chip type, above that will be the manufacturer e.g NVIDIA and ASUS are the top dogs. Then go to the web site of the manufacturer, and open up the drivers section. They usually have an auto scan feature that will detect the appropriate information they require to ensure you get the latest drivers for your particular graphics card.
Because the game is quite old, make sure also you have the latest version of Direct X 9.0c. This is bundled with Win 10, but downloading from Microsoft's site may still fix the issue?
Mikiem 2 or Chris our community Tech experts may be able to shed more light on this.

Kestrel,
I'm having similar problems. Odd, because these games usually run with no problems at all.
If I click on anything other than "Play", the game locks up and crashes back to the desktop.
And even "Play" only takes me to an opening scene with no response from clicking anything, just locked on that one picture of the car in the driveway.

I haven't tried any compatibility modes yet myself, just wanted you to know you're not alone in seeing these problems.

MrLOgIc,

Thanks for the heads up MrLOgic; though I already purchased Deaths Hangover back in Jan 2017 when it was released on Steam :)
Breakouts have been one of my favorite arcade genres for as long as I can remember, so have already purchased most breakouts found on Steam.
There are a few recent additions that I've not purchased because I made a promise to stop buying so many games. I used to pre-order most of my games, or I'd buy them on the day of release. Now I wait until they are on sale for at least 50% or more (preferably 75%) :)
p.s. Just booted it up for the first time in 2 years. I have thousands of games in my Steam library that I'd forgotten about it. It's a decent breakout, with some innovative idea's. Thanks for the reminder, I'll be playing it again later today. :)
