Please only post comments about today's game giveaway; other comments either not appropriate, or not about the game will be deleted at the moderator or administrators discretion; however a little light banter among community members and with the moderator to keep this a friendly place to visit will be allowed, and will be judged by the moderator as to whether it is suitable or not to be left.
I am posting this in light of the massive increase in negative comments not related to the game being given away, inappropriate comments and spam (Almost 700 spam comments were posted in one day a few weeks ago ) that have occurred over the past several months since the site was updated and in particular since the site started to give away games from the Steam world and since they started using Facebook.
I truly believe that if we get lots of decent feedback about the games we get here, more developers will be happy to give away their games. Seeing lots of complaints (and spam) instead of feedback about the game given away will not persuade other developers to give their games away for free. So please bear this in mind when posting your comments. Any comment not about the game for example complaints, or if deemed unfriendly or inappropriate, will be deleted or added to the spam folder, which automatically black lists the IP address you used. Although I have enjoyed responding to many of those comments, I will no longer waste my time answering comments from community members who should have read the moderation policy.
Negative feedback about the games given away are always welcomed because they can also be very constructive for developers, however, complaining about the way the site is operating or problems about downloading or installing the games should be directed to the giveawayoftheday contact form which I've linked to HERE; alternatively, if the problem is game related and it is late in the day (I can't moderate 24 hours a day), please also post your issue in the forums where you may get a response from the community. Often, such problems are related to your computers set up. i.e. your security may block the installation (for example quite a few game giveaways I've installed have been blocked by my copy of Zemana Anti-malware suite) Also please read the moderation policy which can be found HERE and if you do have a problem please check the FAQ's thread HERE. Thank you.

In Brief

Turtix is a cute platformer, great for children from around 7 onwards. It was originally given away back in October 2007 then again in 2012 where it received a brilliant and positive 89% of 270 votes with 66 comments and a positive 83% with 75 comment respectively. You can check out those previous community comments HERE and HERE

Suggestions:

Whether you like or dislike Turtix please give some feedback about your opinion of todays game giveaway, for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality? Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish or good may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games. Would you give away thousands of copies of a game (or extra content for a game) away to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only takes a few moments of your time. This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free instead of complaining about the way this site has changed or that they don't like Steam games. If something isn't for you then move on to the next giveaway, or check out the extra's section at the end of this review; you never know, you may find something that interests you..

The Game:

The options menu is straightforward, with music, sound sliders and a full screen/window toggle, unfortunately, for those obsessed with screen resolutions, this game seems to be fixed in one mode. (It looks fine on all my monitors) There are two modes, story and arcade. The former is recommended for experienced platform players, but there seems to be no difference between the two to me, although I only played the first few levels to see if it was suitable for my children. It’s definitely a game designed for the younger ones. I think my daughter will love it, but Callum whose 8 years old may find it a little too boring. (IMO) Still it’s a lovely game that any parent or grandparent will love to have for entertaining their kids.

turtix 011
turtix 011a
The game play is simple, collect all the diamonds that were spread through the levels when Turtix used his magic and rescue all the turtles, all of which are guarded by baddies, lol. There are 12 levels in each of the five worlds to explore, making a total of 60 levels. The game play does get harder as a you progress through the levels. You’ll also get end of world or maybe level bosses to deal with :). See the help menu and in game help screens for details on how to play the game. You can use the keyboard, mouse or a joystick to control the game, so there are preferences covered for all of the community (I’m presuming the joystick controls can be swapped for game pads, but I’ve not checked yet). The keys are simple to learn with only movement, jump and action keys to remember. :)

Walking over a ? mark in game brings up a message window telling you what you must do next. Staying on the help spot for more than around 10 seconds brings up a new Turtix, whose grooving to new music. Check it out; it brought a smile to my face. :) The music is fresh and pleasant. I like it, but I’m sure there will be those who complain. :(

turtix 011b
turtix 015
The game works with All platforms (i.e. XP, Vista and Win 7 Win 8 and win 10). The only problem I seemed to come across was progressing through the levels in arcade mode. Using Vista I couldn’t get past level 1 and using XP pro with SP2 I couldn’t progress past 2, however I think this may be something to do with me not finding the secrets. It works fine on all OS’s when playing in the story mode. I later found that once I’d played in story mode, the arcade levels were opened. It may be that to play in arcade mode you need to play the story mode first. That’s just a guess though. ;)

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Turtix and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, in this case Steam keys.

Useful Information not related to today's game giveaway:

The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

turtix 022
turtix 023
If Turtix didn't appeal, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.
.
The free game over on Origin is still the excellent atmospheric Sci Fi RPG third person Shooter Mass Effect 2, but it will be ending soon. If you've still not got a copy, get it now, it's well worth. It usually costs £19.99/$19.99 (though I paid the pre order price of over £30 prior to it's release back in January 2010) . You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

You will also find lots of deals over on Green Man Gaming and Big Fish Games usually have 70% off the first game you buy from them, plus they also have other deals occasionally. Desura was purchased from Bad Ju Ju games last year by One Play. If you already have a Desura account you can read details of what is happening HERE. As yet you can't access games you previosly purchased via Desura (I have around 1400), but One Play are working to recover everyones accounts and hope to do so by the end of March 2017. Indie Royale will also resume on a weekly basis, though at this time I don't know if previous Inde Royale Greenlight bundles will be honoured? Alawar, Gamehouse and Playrix entertainment have free games available (usually online versions) and other game houses such as the AAA distributors Ubisoft and Origin always have some games on sale. I've updated the Weekly roundup of game deals HERE to include a large list of other sites where you can find games on sale ( eg Origin, uPlay, GreenManGaming etc, as well as links to free online games as well as other game houses such as Alawar, Playrix and Gamehouse plus gaming news sites such as Rock Paper Shotgun and Game Seek, and included a list of free to play Massive Multiplayer games such as World of Tanks, world of warships, Liberators and Allegiance to name a few. For more details please go to the Weekly roundup of game deals over in the game discussion sticky section HERE.<.blockquote>

turtix 024
turtix 025
There are 878 games on sale over on Steam at the moment, with up to 91% off. Game prices range from as little as £0.15p (Splatter: Zombie apocalypse, Airscape - The Fall of Gravity, Clones, See No Evil and Rolling Sun all with 91% off, and there are almost 200 games and dlc less than $1 and almost 300 less than £1. You can find all of the deals HERE.
Also for this weekend only you can play Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Siege that was released just over a year ago on Steam totally for free until 8pm Sunday evening (GMT). You get access to the full game HERE.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege invites players to master the art of destruction. Intense close quarters confrontations, high lethality, tactics, team play, and explosive action are at the center of the experience. The gameplay sets a new bar for intense firefights and expert strategy in the rich legacy of past Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six games

Key Features include siege gameplay; where enemies now have the means to transform their environments into strongholds: they can trap, fortify, and create defensive systems to prevent breach by Rainbow teams. Counter terrorist units; (“short range” specialists, where training is concentrated on indoor environments. Operating in tight formations, they are experts of close quarter combat, demolition, and coordinated assaults plus hostage rescue). You also are able to destroy parts of the environment i.e. procedural destruction; where everything in the environment reacts realistically, dynamically, and uniquely based on the size and caliber of bullets you are using or the amount of explosives you have set. If you like First person shooters and/or team based game play (both in single player and multiplayer), I highly recommend you try this game. I played this game last year and found it extremely satisfying.

If you spend more than $3 in the Indie Gala store you'll also get a free copy of the atmospheric point and click horror adventure game 'Between Me and the Night' worth $14.99/£9.99. There's also a sale on over on the Humble Bundle site featuring Telltale games (The walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Back to the future, Jurassic ParkPuzzle /agent 1 and 2 etc), plus lads more games on sale. If you subscribe to the Humble Monthly, which costs $12 a month you not only get a large collection of decent Steam games you will also get for the first month of the subscription total war: Warhammer, which was released last Spring and costs $59.99/£39.99. The great thing is, you can cancel at any time, so only need to receive the first bundle of games. I personally haven't bothered, but only becasue I usually have already purchased most of the games included in the monthly bundle. The usual savings on the games you get are around 90%, not counting the introductory offer. There's also lots of games on sale over on the Bundle Stars and Indie Game Stand (IGS)

stores.

...........................................FREE game offer in exchange for quality feedback...................................

I've posted a list of over 100 Steam games in the forums HERE, some of which I will giving away each week to those community members who post decent feedback for the game given away that day. It is quite an extensive list of games taken from the 10 000+ Steam keys I've collected over the last several years; all were either purchased by me, or received free for pre-ordering games on Steam, plus a few from entering competitions and other offers). There will be a limited number of other keys available, such as Origin, uPlay and Desura keys (Desura has recently been purchased following the original owners demise and should be up and running by the end of March). I will announce the winner's from the giveaway the following week. If no announcement is made, it means no one posted feedback that qualified for a free game that week. If you have won a game, I will post details in the thread I've created specifically for that purpose HERE. Once I've given a key away, the game and any comments by the winner will be removed from the list.

Depending on the quality of the feedback, I may choose to award games to more community members for each game given away, 'at my discretion'. The feedback must be about the game, and it must include a couple of paragraphs of feedback following the guidelines I've posted in the suggestions section of my review. i.e. your opinion of the game, what you liked and/or disliked plus suggestions for improvement. If you choose a game that is very cheap I may give you a second game; so, when choosing from the list I provide, please list more than one choice. If a game is chosen by more than one community member and only one key is available the key will go to the one I deem the most useful. I do have multiple keys for quite a lot of the games I've listed, so, don't be put off if you see someone else has chosen the game you want. I haven't indicated any of the games I have multiple keys for (though for example I do have several keys for the excellent Western themed AAA game Call of Juarez, which i picked up for free for purchasing several games via the Indie Gala store several months ago. spending a few dollars got me a copy of the game, so I made several separate purchases over a couple of days while the offer was still live.
I do own at least three community members a game from the previous giveaways that I posted several months ago. I'd totally forgotten about those. I do have a document with their names on, so they will get a game from the original list when I find the document (I'm extremely disorganized); or they can peruse the new list and choose something different. Just post a comment over in the forums in the appropriate thread. If you do post feedback with a view to getting one of the games and think you have covered the requirements, you don't have to do anything until I announce the winners the following week.
Please remember, this comments section is mainly for feedback about today's game giveaway. If you're not sure, read the moderation policy, which you can see HERE

Thanks for reminding me. I must edit the basic document. We did get a game that was 1GB some time ago. Just keep forgetting to edit the original doc. Thanks

Ootje, Huh? I cannot say what parameters this game uses on your system, however, I was wondering how 51MB .zip would unpack an installer that would install even a 1GB program, let alone a 63.6GB program; that would be one whale of a game.

On my system "Turtix" uses up 61.97MB.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

It's obviously a typo. I have a basic document with all the headings for the reviews I post. It would be stupid to type out the headings including the required codes for formatting every time I wrote a review. so I have a basic formatted text document which I then add whatever information needs to be added. The GB comes from a previous game that was 1GB in size. I keep forgetting to change it.

Turtix
A cute little quirky game that is fun to play and has surprisingly good graphics. Realize I'm a bit late to these comments but am not getting GGAOTD email notifications now?? Resigned up for them and hopefully that does the trick.
Game downloaded and installed well, like all MPC games normally do, and we've got a bit of gameplay time on it now, and still having some fun with it ;) Have to mention my handicapped daughter has gotten farther and is better at it than I am, and she wanted me to add that ;)
Can answer the gamepad question as it found ours on Win 10, and with a little adjusting is what we are both using to play, YRMV though of course, but it is playing on ours. A big TY to GGAOTD and MPC for these games :)

I'm an older mature man and my days of playing fast paced games was over long ago. When I first looked at "Turtix" it looked like one of those fast paced games, but decided to give it a shot; I'm glad I did. I stay real busy an enjoy playing a game I can relax with, at night, and I was pleasantly surprised that "Turtix" is right up my alley. I won't call it slow paced, but I guess you can make it as slow or fast paced as you need it to be; I'm sure it will get more difficult as I get up into the higher levels, but up to this point it is a game I can relax with and I'm good with that. And if I want the challenge of a more fast paced game environment I can do that too. Good Game.

Played well Windows 10 x64 Pro w/o making any changes. To select level of diff create a new Player & from
there can select from 1 of 3 settings. Playing w/ Keyboard seemed easiest for me, tho offers mouse & controller.
Especially liked the way turtle would add a temp backpack when you left it alone while pausing to consider
next series of moves. Laughed at second one (no spoiler but music involved). Sound sliders. Just a fun little
well designed colorful platformer. Thanks GOTD.

Thank you for your feedback sludge hound. p.s. whenever I see your name it reminds me of my degrees final year project, where I looked at the mineralization of the River Irwell in the UK), I took water samples at various points in the river from it's source to where it joined the Manchester ship canal, then looked at the biodiversity of the flora and fauna including chemical composition of the water, oxygen content etc (all used as environmental indicators) to see how the river had recovered from the ingress of sewerage from a treatment plant several miles from the source. The River Irwell was one of the most polluted rivers in the UK back in the 1960's. A British poet once wrote a poem about the river the opening lines read something like the birds hopped dry footed on the surface of the river (due to the build up of scum and it was reputed that if you fell into the river and swallowed any of the water you'd most likely have to have your stomach pumped out due to the poisons that had been poured into the river from the local industry.

I used to have Turtix and loved it, so I downloaded and installed it. I have Windows 10, so it won't run since it is 32 bit and mine is only 64 bit. Too bad, it was one of the good games.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

The game runs fine on win 10 64 bit. Try running as Administrator (right click, then select run as Administrator from the drop down menu. Also check the FAQ's thread that I link to in my review.. Finally if it won't install it's likely being blocked by your security. The games executable is wrapper in a Themida based code that some security programs read as a threat because Themida can also be used to wrap malware. In this case it is a safe use of Themida, so it is safe to temporarily turn off your security to install the game; however, it's just past the deadline. The MyPlayCity version is exactly the same as the giveaway version except the three check boxes have been disabled in the giveaway version. So long as you uncheck the three boxes during installation you will avoid the installation of toolbars etc. See my review (end of the introduction) for a link to the MPC version of Turtix.

Hey Wrascally Wabbit,

This game brought back memories of when we used to REALLY get a game a day. IIRC, we got a few of those Turtix games. The music is cheery...if you like, you can turn it off. It's so very cute and pretty and easy to play. Kids will like and I am just a old kid and I love this game. Great game to sit and play with the grandkids..or your own. An easy introduction to platform/adventure gaming. Didn't download..Had it already...Even on a CD somewhere...

Many thanks to Big Fish, MPC and GGOTD for the game. And Wabbit for his review...

Huggles to you and the family. Just ignore the trolls...

Thanks Delenn, I am. The first time we got this was in the first year, then again in 2012. I think we also got Turtle Odyssey :)

I keep getting corrupt file

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Joanne

A couple of other community members have reported this today. The usual culprit is your security. Because the games security wrapper setup.gcd file) contains Themida code, some anti-malware suites will block its installation. The usual message thrown up as an error message is 'corrupt files' or word to that effect. Though its not always that. Please first try turning off your security temporarily, or reboot in safe mode and try installing the game by either of those methods.

Because the Gamegiveawayoftheday have been operating since early December 2006 (over a decade) and have never given away a game that was infected with malware. It's unlikely that turning your security software just to install this game will cause any problems. If it did, you would have seen literally hundreds of community members reporting the fact that it was infected becasue everyone's security would be reporting the problem; so the first option, i.e. turning off your security temporarily (via the task bar notification area next to the clock) rather than rebooting in safe mode would be much faster. to turn off your security you may have to click on the upward pointing arrow that is usually located next to the clock to open the tray then locate the security programs that are running. Alternatively you can turn them off via Task Manager (Cntl - Alt - Del).

If that isn't the problem try using a different file archiver. I've had issues with perfectly good files in the past and found using a different archiver did the trick. I've posted links to several freeware archivers over in the FAQ's thread, which you will find HERE. you may find other fixes in the FAQ's thread. Also check your event logs via the event viewer. to open up the event viewer the easiest way is to type event viewer in the search field or find Control panel, which is usually located in your start menu. Or open your computers file explorer (located above the Start menu symbol once you open up the start menu and usually just below the icon you use to identify yourself). The file explorer looks like a stylized floppy disk or monitor. Click on that to open 'File Explorer' and in the bar where it says Quick access type control panel then enter. Click on where it says control panel. Once control panel is open, in the 'category view' select 'System and Security', then look for 'Administrative Tools'.

control panel
You should see a link under Administrative Tools that links to the event logs (should be a blue hyperlink). Click on that to open up the event viewers logs.

event viewer
It's best to have the event viewer open immediately after you've tried to install the game becasue the event logs record all actions performed by the computer, both automatic processes and ones instigated by the user. If you open the event viewer well after the event, you may find it difficult to find the appropriate logs associated with the attempted installation. Once found the error messages may (but not necessarily) give you information that indicates what the problem was caused by. Check these error messages via google. you'll probably get hundreds of hits. You could also post details here and as it's now late in the giveaway, post in the forums as well. If you really want this game but continue to have problems installing. I would suggest you download directly from MyPlayCity. Just make sure you uncheck the three check boxes that appear when the installer first opens. The game is basically the same apart from those. I hope I haven't confused you? Oh yeas, also check the FAQ's thread located HERE

Installed like lightning on my hp 23 all in one w/ win10. I opened it and played it :) I enjoy the entire thing! It is pretty, if you find the music annoying you can turn it down or off. Runs smoothly. You can use your keyboard or your mouse. It has 3 modes easy medium & hard, they are simple to change. It is a simple easy childs game...just the change in gears for my old adult mind needed! It's a keeper.

Hi everybody and Whiterabbit-UK. :-)

I put the instructions for the users with problems during the installation at the end of this post.

My download/install/start-the-game experience with the game of today:
No problems during download.
No problems detected after doing pre-scans and post-scans with Win10 Defender, SAS free, MBAM free, EEK free, GSAM (all definitions updated).
The package is too big to be sent to AV web services: jotti and virscan; virustotal and metadefender links are at the end of the post (they show no problems).
Same false positives of previous weeks/months were found for GAOTD setup.exe, I won't repeat them.
No problems during installation, at game startup and when changing its options.

I'm using:
- Windows 10 home/standard x64, DEP always on, custom scaling 150%.
- Resolution 1920x1080, color depth 32bit, refresh rate 60Hz.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to the GAOTD team, in particular to Whiterabbit-UK!
Follow the white rabbit, guys!
Thanks for the game to AlawarGames (Alawar Entertainment) and MyPlayCity!

Virustotal and metadefender scans:
Virustotal: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/a9c9fcefad794bd9d5bd0198a2a9851ad5db2f4ad2cf2c5687bf79d283a630b1/analysis/
Metadefender: https://www.metadefender.com/#!/results/file/YTE3MDIwNXJ5ZWJBRndscnVncjFXLUN0RHhydWc/extracted/files

GAOTD users reported problems with these antiviruses/firewalls, in past months/years: Avast, Avg, BitDefender, Comodo, Kaspersky, Norton/Symantec, pados.hu TinyWall, Zemana antilogger/antimalware.
If you have one of those AV, you could try these possible solutions:
1) If the package has been correctly downloaded, right-click it, click properties and:
- Win8, 8.1, 10 users --> tick/select the unblock checkbox, click apply, click ok.
- WinXP, vista, 7 --> click the unblock button, click apply, click ok.
2) If the package has been correctly downloaded, put the setup.exe and the setup.gcd (or their entire folder) in the whitelist of your antivirus
3) Disable the real-time/on-access scanning, just the time to download/install the software (then re-enable that function)
4) Disable your AV completely, just the time to download/install the software (then re-enable it)
5) Boot windows in safe mode with networking, just the time to download/install the software (sometimes this is necessary with kaspersky antivirus)

By the way in these months/years, almost all the engines on the mentioned web services that are problematic for some GAOTD users, i.e. AVG, AVIRA, AVAST BITDEFENDER, KASPERSKY, (NORTON) SYMANTEC, showed NO PROBLEMS.

Not my type of game but since it had mouse controls, I gave it a try. Cute little game and controls work well. I do like the ??? signs to remind me of the goals. For users having trouble installing, I always have to totally disable AVG to download/install, otherwise it won't work.

Hi Sandy

Thank you for your kind words. Always a pleasure to be appreciated. It took me a while, but i finally got there with respect to Trolls. Just realized they wanted response, so I ignore them now. That said, i do still like to reply to some, but only they will see the replies becasue the IP they used will have been blacklisted. I never use profanity or respond in a similar way to them. I just try to explain why they are wrong, or why something has been done in a specific way.

Got this game in 2012. Very good graphics. As good a platformer as can be. Primarily for kids, but I agree with Stephen that adults can enjoy it too.

Hello John

It's probably very sensitive to the Themida code that is used to wrap all game giveaways.

I purchased this game long ago and has been a favorite of mine. I don't usually play arcade type games but this is easy to control and very cute. It reminds me of Turtle Oddyssey, which is a great game too. Can't think of any improvements that the game needs.

Why does this website no longer get Alawar games directly from Alawar? Why do they have to be downloaded third-hand from a reseller? From Alawar to My Play City to GOTD to my computer seems to be a long, hard way to get a game.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

The license for those Alawar games may have been sold off or rented out to MyPlayCity. whenever you download a game from MPC, or install or play an MPC game it opens up to the MPC home page. This earns hard cash, part of which goes to the developer. Most of the games you get from places like MPC are usually past their sell by date, meaning the developer probably only earns a small income from sporadic sales, whereas, g those who would not buy the game will happily get it for free. This is a win win situation for all concerned becasue the original developer (unless they have sold the license yo MPC, the middle man i.e. MPC and the community member, all get something. Alawar used to give games right from the outset of this site over 10 years ago. They took a break from giving games about two year sinto the project and returned over a year later. I think they are doing the same thing again. Another community member knows someone who works for Alawar and was told the have not deserted the giveaway site, just taking a sabbatical. whether that is true I cannot confirm, but as they have done this previously, it could very well be true.

I got this game years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Kids would enjoy it as well. No real violence, cute characters. I wish more of this type of side scroller were made- I enjoy the Supercow, Alex Gordon, Turtle Odyssey, etc type of adventure that Alawar was so good at. We don't seem to see much of that type of game anymore, unfortunately. I guess HOGs are easier to make.

Hi meself

See TK's comment above. Also check the FAQ's thread that you will find in the Game Discussion forums sticky section. I've also linked to it in my review at the top of these comments. Hopefully you will find a fix that will sort the problem. I wasn't able to install any giveaways from both sides for several weeks becasue I had a security software running in the background, that wasn't obvious and I'd forgotten I'd installed it. The only evidence that it was running (I didn't recognize it via Task Manager) was in the right context menu when I right clicked on an executable. But I'd not noticed it. I ended up contacting Microsoft becasue I thought it was a problem with my Win 10 installation. I'd replaced my mother board and thought changing it meant I also needed to re-register windows. so i contacted them and they used a program to access my desk top. The guy found the problem in less than a minute. It was a security software I'd installed via the giveaway of the day several moths before. when I replaced my mother board, it must have added it to the startup, but I wasn't aware. Once I'd deleted the program i was able to install giveaways again. It is most likely a conflict with something you are running in the background. Probably security, but it could be something else. I suggest when you try to install again, immediately check your event log. You may get an error message that will indicate the problem.

meself, try running the setup.exe as that opens the setup.gcd file... no idea why you are trying to open the setup.gcd file with Adobe Acrobat Reader.... that is for PDF files!

Dear Stephen,

I do respect and support the steps you have to take to keep the games from being downloaded and installed outside the allowable time limits.

Since it seems that I am not the only fan of GGotD who has just recently been unable to install the offering of the day, I am wondering if something else has changed. I have been a follower and user of this website for some years and until about a month ago have never had a problem installing any games which have caught my interest.

Would you be able to describe what kind of security software you are suggesting that could be causing this problem. To the best of my knowledge, nothing that I would consider security software has been changed or added to my system in the past month or so which would not allow the games to install.

Would I be correct in believing that if I am unable to get the GGooD selections to install, although probably not free, I would have to get them from the same site(s) you do as the free offering of the day.

I do appreciate being able to use this website and am hoping someone would be able to give me some further help to be able to resolve this problem.

Best Regards.

HisSon, the same for me.

It's not the first time that I can not install a game/software containing a *.gcd file.

This time, I've disabled Kaspersky and even Advanced SystemCare 10 running under Windows 10 but the same notification does appear when running the Setup.exe file (even in a Safe Mode, i.e.: as the Administrator of my PC):

"The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program."

Only "Succes activation" is shown later on and no file is installed at all :(

Please help as this promotion would (once again) end very soon.

Best Regards,
K.M.

All I can suggest at this time is that you systematically close any unneeded system files running in the background, via Task Manager, one at a time, trying to install the giveaway each time. this will hopefully find the program that may be conflicting with the installation. The .gcd file contains Themida code, so it's likely to be some sort of security. as I've mentioned elsewhere, i had a similar problem for several weeks following a change of motherboard. A guy at Microsoft discovered a security program running in the background that I'd totally forgotten about., when I first installed the program earlier in the year ( think it was early spring, i took it out of Start up and promptly forgot about it. changing the Motherboard must have caused it to be put back in the start up, though i cannot explain how. Anyway, i was totally oblivious of it running. When I asked the Microsoft guy to delete the program, everything returned to normal and apart from issues with my anti logger, which sometimes deletes giveaway executable I've been able to install everything I've wanted once I've turned the anti-logger off. I would also suggest you check your event viewer and check the logs immediately after trying to install a game or application from the giveaway project. Not all giveaways over on the application side now include the gcd file, so you could at least tie the issue down to that file. I'm still almost certain it's a problem with the wrapper containing the Themida code. There is a quick way of turning off system files not needed when playing games. That could save you a lot of time turning off individual applications that are running in the background. Install the free Razer Game booster which you can get HERE. when it's active it automatically turns of quite a few programs. If you can then install a game, it will be one of those apps that was turned off by Game booster. If not continue by trial and error until you discover the conflict (assuming it is a conflict. I did have a problem about 10 years ago when i downloaded a zipped file from a game distributor. when I tried to unpack the zip file I repeatedly got the corrupted files error message. i downloaded the zip file several times and each time got the same issue. i contacted the developer who checked the download servers and told me the file was okay. I them tried unzipping the file with a new file archiver I'd just purchased and it worked. so you could also try using a different file archiver to the one you usually use. I've posted links to several free archivers in the FAQ's thread, which you can find find HERE

To quickly get this out of the way, both today's game and yesterday's game were originally blocked by Norton Internet Security. First time that's ever happened to me when using Norton. It was blocking a Trojan8, plus one other one today - don't remember what. As I know your downloads are 100% safe, I bypassed and installed them anyway. I am on a Windows 10 x64 desktop. Other than the new security warnings from Norton, I had no trouble installing the game.
Today's game is a fun little game. I'm not used to arcade style games so this will be a challenge to me! The graphics are cute and by trial and error, I am finding different tricks (such as the turtle rolling up into a ball and flipping around when I quickly quick the mouse - gets him to where I want him to go - sort of). Music is pleasant - don't think it will drive my nuts after listening to it for a while.
Altogether, a keeper of a game. Thank you for two great games this weekend!

Hi Granny483

Norton probably picked up on either the Themida wrapper, which as you probably know can also be used to hide malware, which is possibly why it warned of a Trojan, it could also have been due to the non invasive adware that is packaged with all MyPlayCity games and other f games from similar sites like Gametop, freeGamePick, TooMky Games etc.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

The giveaway files contain Themida code which can be seen as a threat by some security packages. it's likely the game executable has been blocked. You can either install in safe mode or temporarily turn off your security software until the game has been installed. The giveaway site has been operating since early Dec 2006 and has never given away a game laced with malware. The Themida wrapper is used to protect the executable from hackers, becasue previously there was a very simple way of getting the activated executable from the AppData folder during installation, which enabled the user to install the game anywhere any time. Check the FAQ's thread for other issues. I've linked to in in my review above.
