Hi Folk's, I'm taking a sabbatical for a few days as I'm basically dog tired with too much going on here in the family. I posted the basics for todays game last week, but haven't posted anything for tomorrows game which I think is one we've not had before? Have a great weekend and see you soon.
TriO: The Great Settlement:
In Brief:
TriO: The Great Settlement is a casual match three game with a twist.
It was originally given away on the 31th July 2010 where it received a positive 71% from 448 votes with 47 comments which you can see HERE. It was also given away on the 20th May 2017 where it received a positive 94% from 34 votes with 22 comments which you can see HERE

TriO: The Great Settlement:
• 70 challenging levels (each level in two stages)
• Defeat Bosses
• Discover and build up floating islands
• Solve the secrets of ancient race of orbics
• Use bonuses to defeat Dark Orbics
• Trophies and magic artefacts
The Game:
The game comprises of 70 levels, each level having two stages, (effectively giving you 140 levels), and there are three game modes called Normal, Relaxed and Open, though the open mode isn’t available until at least one of the first two has been completed. You can then choose any level you wish or click on the random button which chooses levels at random. The difference between Normal and Relaxed is that the former mode (Normal) is timed.

There is an introductory story board comprising of several screens, then a little animated sequence showing you one of the islands that you can develop as the game progresses.. Both can be skipped by clicking on the X.

A stage is completed when the flask to the right of the playing area has been filled by red fluid, or in the case of the timed mode you run out of time or the boxes (orbis’s) reach the red laser marker.

Options Menu
Options include the usual slider for music, which I found very repetitive and nondescript, plus the sound volume for in game effects. Thankfully this is easily remidied by changing the music files, details of which I've included below. There is also a slider for mouse sensitivity and two toggles; one for fullscreen/ windowed modes and the other one for setting a custom cursor, as well as a button that takes you to the credits.

There is a simple tutorial that appears whenever a new element to the game appears. It can be turned off at any time

Game modes:
The game is fully controlled by the mouse. You move the blocks to be dropped to the left or right and when lined up click the left mouse button to release the block from the crane that holds the block in place. You can change this block by using the right mouse button. Blocks automatically link together when a match of three or more is made.

You earn gold by completing levels and this can then be spent on improving the islands. When the island screen opens you click on the build button which brings up a selection panel. Initially only one house is available (for a price of 500 gold pieces), but as the game progresses another six buildings are unlocked. From the island screen you can also gain access to the trophy room, which displays the various awards that you earn during the game.

As well as the main menu or how to play section that shows you pictorially and in words how to play the game. The concept is simple, make a match of three or more to destroy the bricks. The bigger the combo the more points you score.

As you progress through the game the levels become progressively harder as new game elements such as multi hit boxes and new level designs are introduced. If you fail to complete a level in time you can either restart the level or skip to the next level; however you are only allowed three skips during the game so use them wisely.

Conclusion:
Overall ‘Trio: The Great Settlement’ is an excellent and fun family game that has loads of replayability (Each time you play a level the blocks will be in a different configuration). The kids will love The comic style graphics. The addition of a sim like mini game where you have to develope a series of islands as the game progresses adds a little extra to the usual match three game play. The game play is different to the usual fare that you'd expect from this branch of the match three genre, with interesting puzzles incorporated into the game in a subtle way. Don't let the cheerful graphic and the well worn match three concept put you off thinking that this isn't a serious puzzle game because it's not. The levels get progressively harder and harder, and I challenge even the hardiest of puzzle lovers not to say that they had a hard time reaching the end of this interesting game. Mini games have become the norm over the last few years and have helped to regenerate a tired genre. This sim like add-on is no exception. it's simple in design will give added pleasure to playing this excellent game.

If you don't like the in game music you can change it by exchanging the ogg files. see below in the additional information section for more information.

In my opinion this is worth a good 7.5 out of 10. I’d give it more, but there are hundreds of match three style games around these days, so can’t say it’s exceptional; I’ll certainly be keeping this one for a rainy day. :)

I was able to install and run the game in full and widescreen mode with custom cursors on both my WinXP desktop and Win10 x64 laptop. An interesting variation on the match-3 genre, with different mechanics that I'm sure will become increasingly challenging at higher levels, so definitely a keeper for me!

A nice game. I need to start getting here earlier in the day so I can pass on my recommendations.

I don't remember the tutorial telling me about right click to swap the current and next color. That quickly becomes crucial

In case it helps anyone...

Disabling full screen optimizations in the compatibility settings often helps & is easy to try. Win11 also has the same optimizations available in windowed mode.

That said, something else to try is turning off multiplane overlay.

Separated and caged by evil to keep the orbics from combining into groups of three to activate their powers... the prophecy long ago spoke of a creature from an external world who will come to help the tiny boxed yet the burger king happy prisoned orbics from the oh so round planet of orb...and waitaminute....the creature in the prophecy has my name! Now I've gotta play ;) Hey! At least we have a story as to why we have to match 3 of them together and build up their new home...and its called TriO.

Whiterabbit already did a nice job of an overview. Move the orbic in a box to the left or right at the top and let them drop with a left mouse click to try to match three or more in the group of blocks below to clear the field within a time limit (normal mode, relaxed has no timer). The right button changes the color of the orbic that can be dropped sometimes and dont let the boxes stack up too high past the red line. Interesting that you can match a bit diagonally and even when the boxes are just a little bit adjacent to each other such as touching corners only. There is some odd physics on the world of orb apparently that dont always work as they do here on earth and may help or hinder the playability for some - boxes will link up even with space open below them unlike say tetris and the critters bounce around, so you don't always know if they're going to make contact for a match or not. The addition of building up the floating islands between levels using the money might help keep people wanting to play. Initially only one house is available (for a price of 500 gold pieces), but as the game progresses other buildings are unlocked. You can click on a orbic to move them around such as placing them in their house, and they also talk or emote what they want or their moods. For example redrice showed a unhappy face and said I can't concentrate when the mouse hovered over. The levels of the game itself get harder as you go as well with new game elements added but its not quite as easy as it appears initially. Additionally the 70 levels is plenty and since it has an ending it further may help to keep you going long after games of this type might otherwise be deleted since they have no end and you get bored with the gameplay (which has some replayability). RATING: B

I love this game. When I got it in 2010 I played it constantly. When I finished I would start again. I'm downloading again to see I it's as fun as I remember.

This game did work on windows 11 but I had to un tick the full screen and wide screen in display settings due to the screen flickering. When I got into the game it was playable but it was difficult for me to pass the levels, it is a good match 3 game with a different approach good animated icons worth trying. Thank you for offering the game today it is worth trying but unfortunately not for me

Thank you for the game. I run the game in windowed mode, because my monitor doesn't function well with some games in full screen, and the game ran well, and I made it through a few levels with no problem. I found the game to be pretty fun and one that I will keep playing.

Hello Whiterabbit-uk and everyone else, I hope all of you are having a great weekend and thank you for GGOTD for giving us the opportunity to try this fun little game out as it looked like the perfect puzzler to play on the weekend.

Unfortunately I am going to have to pass on reviewing today's game as I'm unable to play the game. After the first level starts, I am greeted with an Access Violation Error on the screen and the game crashes. I don't know what's causing it and I've reboot my computer to try and solve with no luck.

It's a shame that this game does not work for me as other games on here have. Game does have a cutesy theme and they managed to get high quality graphics from a small file size package.

If anyone in the community has ideas on how to get this work it would be appreciated.

sailorbear510 aka Jason, hi .
A few ideas off the top of my head ...

1) reboot in safe mode and try to play the game

2) update the graphics card drivers

3) update directx

4) try to play the game in windowed mode

5) set compatibility mode to Windows XP .

Forgot to mention that I've got the game the last time
that it was given (20-05-2017) , it was installed under
Windows XP and worked without a problem .
Today I've found the old installation and the game
worked just fine .
I am still using Windows XP .

sailorbear510 aka Jason,

Can you tell us something about what you're using to run this game on - like OS, etc? Someone might find that helpful.

Hi Jason, Sorry to hear you cant get it to run. Since you are getting an access violation error, try running the game as administrator and see if it works. Right click on the exe file of the game not the shortcut and run it as administrator. If that doesn't work, disable User Account Control and can reenable after playing. Those are the easiest 2 to try. Otherwise,
for a EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION error might need to disable discord overlay in the settings and beyond that maybe will need to try a clean boot, Add Program to Data Execution Prevention Whitelist or even check ram for problems. There are some instructions I found here should the easier ones not work. https://appuals.com/exception_access_violation-error/
