A follow-up to my comment at #144 if you want to see real graphics buy DOW:DC* or even DOW:WA** or if you're too poor at least DOW***.

For n00bs:
*DOW:DC is Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (www.dow-darkcrusade.com)
**DOW:WA is Dawn of War: Winter Assault (www.dawnofwargame.com)
***DOW is Dawn of War (www.dawnofwargame.com)
NOTE: These games are by Relic Entertainment and THQ and are gory! And I personally recommend DOW:DC (not for the cost, coz' I've played it!)

The nice 3D graphics are all for nothing. This is a horrible racing game. No fun and the joke of a racing Trabis is lost. Waste of time.

You would not believe how much fun we have had with this race game. Extremely well written! No more errors at all since I fixed my "memory access violation" problem. Much thanks from Play Publishing for their help! Now I can go back through it all again and again. It is both funny and fun! This has been one of my most favorite games I have ever played!! Gfantastic!

I really enjoyed this game. I finished it in two days. Suprisingly the toughest round is the first round. Almost every other round is much easier and more enjoyable than the first one. Often you can win a race even if you had a bad start, but to be the first from the start to the end is the best tactic. Only problem was in the 22nd round where I had received "Memory Access Violation" error. I skipped this level with the help of registry trick (Thanks to Whiterabbit aka Stephen).

Sorry for the repeated posts, this one is in responce to a call for help...........

Carole, comment #34. If you open up your CD/DVD burner and drag all the files from wherever you keep your games folder to the copy window, and copy them to disk. Once the disk has been verified, try it out by inserting the CD/DVD back into your computer and clicking on the CD/DVD icon. Open up whatever game you want and click on the executable file. The game should boot up. (if you do have problems check my posts from the 28th Oct for my email and email me and I’ll give you more information if you need it. Do let me know which burning software you use as well) :) Provided they work you can then safely delete the games from the folder you keep them in. …DO NOT… under any circumstance use the uninstall feature found within the games folder as this may/will delete the registration entry in your computer and you will then have lost the full version. I'd do a restore point just in case as well. Also, once the games folders have been deleted DO NOT use a registry cleaner as it may label some of these games entries in your registry as orphan files and delete them. However if you forget do hope you've made a restore point otherwise it will be wait till it repeats again :( I'd personally check all the games individually to make sure they work from the disc you've burned before you delete them.

Better still I’d consider buying another disc that you could use for the games because hard drives less than 80Gb can be bought cheaply these days as the norm is 300Gb + (All my 320Gb drives cost about $100 each and I bought an external drive of 500Gb recently for $120) I also recently bought an 80G drive for my father in law for $40. Of course I appreciate that not everyone can afford such luxuries. But, consider this; if you aren’t intending to buy any of these games, and if you have most of what’s been given away since the inception of the game giveaway project and for that matter the giveaway project, you're talking a lot of dollars worth of software. Considering most arcade games cost nearly $20 each; work it out in your head how much 10 months of giveaways would be worth: ($20x300=$6000), which would buy you one of most up to date home computers possible with a 16GHz (quad core) cpu, 8Gb RAM, NVidia 8800 GTX ultra 768Mb twin graphic card set up (SLI), 'at least' 1 Terabyte of HDD space, the best audio card, with at least a 750W psu, all the latest software and all the extra's such as a large TFT display, wireless speakers, state of the art keyboard and mouse , etc, etc. (the stuff that most dedicated computer gamers dream of) :)

I've already put one of my oldest computers to one side with it's lowly 2 x 40G hard drives, (1.5GHz cpu and 1Gb RAM and a NVidia Fx5500 256Mb) which are full of giveaway and game giveaway software and virtually nothing else (most of my other arcade games as well) I've taken the wireless card out so that you can’t connect to the internet without using a cable and therefore it has no chance of getting harmed by viri, and it's kept to one side for the family to play at weekends. The reason why is because the games are worth keeping and a lot of the applications (for a rainy day) and are worth much more than the computer, which after building a new one I was going to give away to the local charity shop, but decided to keep it because of the games.

this game sucked, the graphics reminded me of some bad memories from the early 90's. the game play was awful, the physics were stupid.
132Mb is not large though but i can understand dial up users being frustrated.

Hey all you guys complaining of slow download speeds, there is still a way for you to enjoy this game. Get Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm) @ o0nly 5.35 mb. Use it to download only Activate.exe from the zip file and activate the game before the giveaway is over. Then you can download the game from the maker's site or wikifortio at any later time. How's That!! Thank me guys.........

This is really a great game GGAOTD. Keep up the good work. And oh I'm from India and i downloaded this thing in under 10 mins.

You people should comment on the freakin' game not how fast your broadband is! This game looks as though it was made with something worse than Game Maker or Games Factory! It looks like a piece of dirt has flown off the road and stuck onto GGAOTD. I love this site. A free game everyday! But what the hell? WTF? OMFG! 132mb of download and only 1 Car + 1 Track according to "sharwar" and guess what? It's meant to be worth 10 Euros! Worth more like 10 pieces of paper with "Payment For Some Sh*t!" And I did not DL this piece of HDD Wastage. I leave that to stupid n00bs that think that is good. And a reminder to every effing person here - STOP BRAGGING ABOUT YOUR FREAKIN' DOWNLOAD SPEEDS!

Err, those who complain about the cars being too "hard"... Stop complaining and just admit that you suck at driving games LOL! The physics are simplistic compared to simulations like Rand McRae Rally and thus is easier. Hint: LEARN TO USE THE DARN HANDBRAKE TO SET UP A DRIFT.

You need to WIN races in order to unlock cars and courses, otherwise you're stuck with one car on one course. (Unless of course you use a cheat or something)

Horrible, horrible, game. I waited for a while to download this, because it was poorly received - however, I finally decided to give it a try.

OW.

I don't normally uninstall games from here - because none have been that bad. But I just uninstalled this.

The game is graphically intensive - I had to set it on the minimum graphical settings to have it run smoothly. The low drawing distance required for that really hurt gameplay. That's a major flaw. However, the graphics, even on the lowest settings, were fabulous, but that's really my only compliment for this game. It's practically a better screensaver than a game.

The lack of choices in course and car is horrible. You have to win stuff to unlock more. This is fine - unlocking stuff is fun, right? Except for one thing. You only start with one car and one course.

Sure, unlocking is a good move, but we also like CHOICE. At least give us a few different cars and tracks to start on, otherwise it's like a Choose Your Own Adventure game where there's only one option each page.

As others have commented on, the difficulty of the game is startlingly stupid. You go exactly as fast as the other cars, so there's essentially no way to get into first place if you fall out of it. Plus, the turns are so sharp that, even if you hold down the hand brake throughout the entire race, you'll still crash into a few walls. The closest I ever got to victory in four laps was holding third place for two checkpoints.

Thumbs down from me.

CONS: doesn't allow for controller, keyboard only. wouldn't work in 1200x(whatever) mode. highest resolution was 10xx x something. and it reuses the same track over and over. i got to the 8th level ( i think) and something like 4 of those levels were the city of lights level. only 3 unique tracks in that many levels. game pace was also pretty slow. not very many options. i like options like car setup/car upgrades/different type of cars available/difficulty settings/car damage...

PROS: good graphics and descent sound.

anyways, thanks for the opportunity to try it. i think when publishers like PLAY allow some users to try their product without buying it just adds to their reputability. thanks again for the offer, but i'll pass and wait for another.

As a fan of different racing games (have at least 15 in my collection) I thought this might be an interesting game to try. Will never know. Tried 3 times to download and open. Download took 20 minutes. Opened ok (so I thought). Clicked on icon on desktop to play game. Started to open, got a runtime error message and it shut right down. So much for that game. Hopefully there will be other games here in the future that I will be able to play.

I don't know what happened to the post I made earlier thanking Franck for his cheat codes. I included a small tutorial on how to go about changing the registry entry as I’m sure there are some out there in cyber land that wouldn't know where to start. It seems that the post may have been moderated as being too sensitive due to the registry issue and other keys.
I did check out the cheat code and it works like a treat, unlocking all the courses in both the championship race and the singles race. It also unlocks all the cars that are available.

If you can't work out how to do it just Email me. I posted an email in one of my comments last week (28th Oct) and I'll send you a detailed tutorial on how to go to the correct place and edit the key. I'll include all the Hexadecimal numbers from 1 to 29 as well so that you don’t have to unlock them all if you don't want to. It's quite simple though. If you know how to actually find your way to the particular key, which Franck has given the path to you just have to click on current event and it will bring up a small window that will let you input the hexadecimal number.

Thanks again Franck, I've spent three or more hours trying to get to the next course without success, so decided to use the cheat code, otherwise I doubt I would have carried on with the game, despite it being okay.

The 30 level championship race as I suspected contains 10 different courses, each repeated three times, however, a lot of the courses actually have different routes to follow. In the single race game these can be selected at the beginning of the game.

If my last post did appear, I apologise for this repeated post which covers most of what I said in my second post.

Thank you Thruddirico comment #70 and Jack Hammer & family comment #85. Allen comment #61 I had to resort to Francks cheat to get through this one as I was not able to beat the cars realistic steering lol. (sorry I called you Paul in my last comment)

To those who are getting a "Memory Access Violation". I got it a couple times too. Just start the game, and try changing a couple settings inside the game, and tinker with your antialiasing settings. I changed it in my 7800 GT nvidia graphica card software. It seemed to fix the MAV error message. Hope this helps. This game is quite fun actually! Not great, but for free, it is pretty good. It is a keeper! It is well written. It works great on my XP machine!

Please remember folks, if you think the handling is poor for a car simulation, your actually wrong. As someone else pointed out (I think it was Hempman), these cars are supposed to handle this way. It's definitely a challenging game. After playing it for 2 to 3 hours following my review above, I've still not won a race. lol

I almost made third on one race but was pipped at the post by less than a second. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. This is definitely staying on my computer, and has also been installed on my son’s computer.

As Tomas comment #105 said, “this game would have been much improved by the addition of a multiplayer option”, well words to that effect. My son would love to race against me. How about it Play.pl? Sounds like it could be a winner if you did that. I'd also give players the option of being able to select most of the circuit’s right from the start, and just keep a few locked. I'd also do it for the different cars available as well. With those changes it would be fabulous.

I must admit that although I have enjoyed playing the game for the past few hours, it has become a little tedious racing the same track over and over again. If I could fit my wheel controller to this desk I use for my computers I'd try it with a wheel, but the desk has a trim that won’t allow me to fix it on the desk :( These sorts of games are made for a wheel and not keyboard (as someone else also mentions above). Has anyone progressed to a new level or unlocked any of the other cars yet? I’ve only been playing the single race so maybe I should try the championship race; though I was saving that until I’d improved my handling skills, lol

This reminds me of Midtown Madness a little (okay a miniscule amount), where you had to win points to unlock the better cars by racing and winning different styles of races. I was never any good at that either; instead I just used to play the one where you could roam around the city, smashing into other cars and avoid being caught by the police. If you ever see either of those games Midtown Madness I and II in the bargain basements I’d recommend them as they are a blast. In fact I’m going to reinstall MM II right now as I never actually checked out all the twists and turns as I spent most of my time racing on the golden gate bridge, lol.

I stick by my earlier score of 7 out of 10 despite the frustration that’s building up. I’m going to leave it for a day and try again. If I can just unlock one new level it will spur me on. Failing that I’ll try the cheat that FranckW comment #88 posted.
If you don’t know anything about editing your registry as Franck suggests, firstly make sure you create a restore point before doing anything with your registry. To actually accomplish what Franck suggests follow the steps below:

1) Click on the Start Menu then go to the run command and click on that
2) Enter regedit into the field and click on OK
3) If all the hives are open close them by clicking on the small boxes that have either a - or + in them. Clicking on the – will close them. Once this is done you should see 5 hives.
4) Click on the checkbox next to the HKey_Local_Machine
5) Scroll down to the Software folder and open it up by clicking on the + next to it
6) Scroll down to the mlab folder and open it up by clicking on the + next to it
7) Click on the Trabant folder
8) Click on an empty space in the right widow where all the keys are located, then using your mouse wheel, (or id you are using a mouse without a wheel, using the scroll bar to the right of the window), scroll down until you find the appropriate key that Franck mentions, that is Current Event…
9) Double click (or single if you have windows set up for a single click) on Current Event…A small editing window will pop up
10) Ensure that the code is set to Hexadecimal and not decimal and insert the desired figure, in this case 1d
11) Click Ok, shut the registry down, and boot up your game. (Ensure the game has been closed down before adjusting the registry)

Thanks a lot Franck, I didn’t know it was that easy. If I don’t get to the next level soon I think may just unlock a couple of levels to see what’s in store. :)

Here are the conversions you need:

0=00, 1=01, 2=02, 3=03, 4=04, 5=05, 6=06, 7=07, 8=08, 9=09,

10 =0a, 11=0b, 12=0c, 13=0d, 14=0e, 15=0f, 16=10, 17=11, 18=12, 19=13,

20=14, 21=15, 22=16, 23=17, 24=18, 25=19, 26=1a, 27=1b, 28=1c, 29=1d,

30=1e (you don’t actually need this one, but I put it there for illustration purposes)

By the way B.J. I didn’t grab those from the top of my head, I Googled them; which is the most intelligent way of remembering such data, IMO lol

I hope the above mini tutorial helps anyone that is unsure. The best advice though is to leave the registry alone if you’re not sure; although I’m no expert and have never had problems sifting through the registry for other very useful information ;) myself. I’ve deleted a lot of keys by hand many a time while searching the software sections of the HKey_Current_User and HKey_Local_Machine and even the HKey_Users sections of the hives, although the latter hive isn’t as easy to find the software section (S-1-1-5-21-……)

By the way thanks Jack Hammer & Family comment #85 and Thruddirico comment #70 . Also Paul comment #61 I’ve been toitally stumped as to how to drive one of the Trabbant beasts, lol. I’d go and check out Franck’s suggestion which I’ve elaborated on above.

Many thanks to Franck (#88) for the cheat that opens up all available tracks and cars. I will spend some time trying the different choices. Without the cheat, I would uninstall, as the car handles about as well as a fridge on wheels, and it's too frustrating to try to catch the nimble opponents while slamming into walls on every single turn. The adversaries all drive cars that handle like Porsches, and they have virtually lapped you by the time you're rattling your piece of junk around the first corner.

Pros:
-Excellent graphics (well, okay, but much more than decent by my standards)
-Lots of courses (not available at first; must be unlocked by winning or entering cheat)

Cons:
-Prohibitively annoying vehicle handling.
-Cars don't have tinkering capacity (different tires, engines, etc.).
-Not really much to do, and the tracks could have benefitted from shortcuts.
-At 440 MB, game is a very large download. It wouldn't be a problem as a separate disk, but I have a five-year-old 20 GB comp. with only 1.5 Gigs free space remaining on the drive. I could buy an extra hard drive though, so this is not really a criticism of the game.

Took 22 minutes to download. Slower than usual download. We played the game and I gotta tell ya, the steering is sluggish. Like you have to start steering early in a curve. Other than that, the game is fine! The scenery is a lil repetitive. The graphics are actually pretty good. I found that accelerating and steering at the same time will get the car around a curve a lil better, giving you a better line. I rate the game a 8.5 our of a 10.

The Trabant's body was made out of layers of melted plastic and linen. The engine was so badly put-together that it burned oil the first time it was driven. It was so underpowered that it struggled to reach 60 in under 20 seconds. Why anyone would feature this in a game at all, especially in a racing game, and as the main car, is beyond my comprehension.

Appeared to download, activate and install fine.
On running the game, it stalls almost immediately with the only error info "Error! Memory access violation".

3GHz Pentium with 3GB RAM but only a 128MB video card - Could this have something to do with it? Even though according to the publishers website, I'm well within the system requirements.

Apparently the very first Trabant has been produced exactly 50 years ago - btw. in the year of Sputnik ("Trabant" meaning "Satellite"...) ^^

after playing like 5 minutes, i can tell you that the phyics of the game is just terrible. you cannot both accelerate and control your car, and when stop accelarating your speed goes down too unrealisticly quick. the graphiscs are fine, but music and game play need to be improved.

It has taken 12 minutes to download half of it. I am in Oakland, California. Dont know if there are server problems or not. From the reviews I have read, it must be a good game. Down to 95 kb per second. Anyone else having this problem??

I am too from New Zealand and the file size is fine.....sure it takes me about 35 mins to download this one but its nowhere near as big as the crysis demo i downloaded at 2.5 gig!!! or the full game which is 12 gig....you cannot seriously expect to be included in all the internet has to offer on dial up! Don't be so selfish the world is bigger than just you and me.

I have DSL so the download wasn't long.

But the graphics are bad (even after changing settings) and the game play is well bad...

You have to start with one track and one car...

And well they tend not to wreck and if they do they pass you very quickly...

So graphics 5/10
Gameplay 6/10
Music and sound 7/10

Might be okay as a time waster but after 10 minutes on my system (and 5 minutes trying to make the graphics better)...

Its off to the rubish bin..

But thanks for the free games I would like to see others of a better quality in this genre...

Guys, I love your idea and site, but 132MB to just one day was a bad idea... my Brazilian "400KBPS" broadband take @21KB/s (yes, too slow, but and one and half hour download the file...)

Please, good games (like all that from alawar) doesn't need more than 15MB... 30MB for amazing games... 60MB for SPECIAL editions... more than 100MB >>> NEVER! <<<....

Keep doing!
