Game play Videos and Slideshow:
I've posted around 45 images to one of my photobucket accounts, which you can see HERE. I've also posted a few video's of game play HERE, HERE and HERE.
The Game:
Towers of Oz is a tower defense game similar in mechanics to the first Plants & Zombies game where you have several lanes arranged like a bowling alley, except instead of Plants and Zombies we have towers and soldiers based on the Wizard of Oz story. As you progress through the levels you are introduced to new defenses such as bombs, lightning, double shooters, blocking walls etc, but there are also negative atticking forces, with upgrades such as the wooden soldier or the drummer, who gives the attacking forces more strength, so they are harder to destroy.

There is no tutorial as such, but the simple instructions given at the beginning are enough to get you started. This is a tactical game. You need to create your defenses sensibly or you will be over run. Mana is important as this is your currency for purchasing the other defenses. Don't place your defenses randomly, for example, only place towers and other defenses in the various lanes once you see an attacking soldier in that lane because those defenses only work in that particular lane. Build up as many Mana fountains as you can in between creating defenses to earn more Mana, which can then be spent on more defenses. I found two rows of Mana fountains sufficient once you got past level 6.

Conclusion:
I loved the original Plants & Zombies (P&Z), so have so far enjoyed playing this game. I do think it's a little harder than P&Z, as the game progresses faster, with your enemy soldiers moving much faster than the zombies in P&Z; that said, with a little practice, you should overcome the initial difficulties. This promises to be an interesting and challenging alternative to the more sedate Plants and Zombies game.

I highly recommend downloading this game. It's challenging but a lot of fun to play. Don't be put off by the lack of a decent tutorial. Once you've picked up the gist of how to play the game, I’m sure you'll love it. Watching the videos should give you an idea of the rules for this game.
My advice is create a couple of Mana fountains first, then only buy the defenses for the lanes that require defenses, i.e. wait until a soldier starts moving towards the crystals in a particular lane before you start to add any sort of defense. Once past level 5 or 6, by the end of the level you should have at least one row, if not two rows of Mana fountains. The more of these you have, the quicker you can purchase new defenses; of course that is determined by the cool down for each defense as it takes up to a minute to be able to create new towers, lightning, bombs and walls etc. As you progress, more defenses become available, as mentioned above, I’ve been unable to progress beyond level 7 at this time, so can’t tell you what other defenses there will be, but if the game follows in the footsteps of P&Z, they promise to be interesting

Ila Turner,

There aren't many on the lines of Plants vs. Zombies, so this was great to see the first time around and again now. Thank you for your comment.

I get a "failed to launch program". What's up?

Paul Caplin,

The executable is wrapped in Themida code, which sometimes sets off your security which blocked the installation but not the activation. There are three things you can do to get the game installed:

1) ... White-list the giveaway files with your security
2) ... Reboot in safe mode with networking, install the game then reboot as normal
3) ... temporarily turn off your security, install then turn your security back on

The giveaway team have been giving games away for almost 13 years and have never given away a game infected with malware.

Whiterabbit-uk, I had done all that, and this isn't the first time this has happened, at least to me. The last few downloads have "Failed to launch", and I've tried everything... safe mode, compatibility mode, turning off antivirus and other programs that might interfere... nothing works. The Thermida wrapper isn't the problem here, as I've installed dozens of programs successfully. Have you changed anything in the way you prepare the programs for download?

Paul Caplin, Doesn't matter, the time for the giveaway is over. I'm done. Thanks for the games over the years. I'm out.

Paul Caplin,

Thank you for replying, sorry you feel that way.

Personally i've only ever had issues with a few giveaways over the years since the giveaway project started and they were casued by a security program that I'd deactivated, but somehow reactivated without my knowledge, so I couldn't igure what the issue was for over a month.

The only other thing I can suggest is that something else on your computer is causing the issue, perhaps something you installed recently?

Have you checked the event logs over the periods you've tried but failed to get one of these giveaways installed? Sometimes you can find the cause of the issue there.

I installed & played a little, then, it hangs.

And I can't get out of it unless I restart or logout of windows 8.1 64.

Can you help?
Should I use compatibility mode?
Or, should I just uninstall?

Wanderer,

I would try compatibility mode first. I have WIN 10 and find I sometimes have to try more than one setting to get a game to work, even newer ones, but I tenaciously (otherwise known as too darn stubborn) refuse to give up until I find one that will work.

Good luck and happy gaming!

Wanderer,

Hi Wanderer, did you get the game issue fixed?

Ila Turner,

Thanks Ila.

I normally would do that too, but, the problem in this case is restarting the machine. Annoying.

Whiterabbit-uk,

Thanks Whiterabbit-uk.

No I did not.

I just uninstalled. Having to restart the machine after each try was annoying.
