Seems to give some huge advantages to the guy in 1st. You get speed bonus, shield and oil - all of which help you out when you're in first, but not so much when you're behind, although speed helps. Basically the further back you fall, the more obstacles you have to face, including other cars that spin out of control. Ideally it should be the other way around - staying in 1st should be harder than getting in 1st.

No problem Needforguns,

I love those sorts of games. Death Track: Ressurection came up as a 50% off deal ages ago and I bought it as soon as I saw it. I don't play it as often as I'd like at the moment; but thats only because there have been some brilliant games released recently. :) Have you seen the game Fuel? A post apocalyptic racing game that covers thousands of square miles and thousands of miles of roads and tracks, with fantastic graphics. The environments are all modelled from satellite imagery of places like the Grand Canyon.

Maybe we could have a race sometime? (I'm rubbish by the way, lol.)

W.R.

Okay folks, there wont be any more moderation for a several hours (from me at least) I need to crash. I'll check over the comments before the end of the giveaway just in case anyone has any urgent queries. Most problems have been covered somewhere in these comments, so please do check all the comments just in case your question has already been answered.

Hi #18
I downloaded and installed fine. Played (and lost hopelessly) first race and exited game. On my desktop was:

WINDOWS SECURITY ALERT :
To help protect your computer, Windows firewall has blocked some features of this program. Do you want to keep blocking this program?
"Keep blocking" "Unblock" "Ask me later"
Windows firewall has blocked this program from accepting connections from the internet or a network. If you recognize the program or trust the publisher, you can unblock it. "when should I unblock a program?"
Ok I just pressed the "Ask me later" button (procrastinating)

Since I don't think that it needs to go on the internet (phone home) to run I will probably block it (later).
Thanks .

Moderator Comment:

The game does have a multiplayer component. And you are supposed to be able to set up a server so that others can connect to your game. Maybe it is this component of the game thats being detected?

Works fine for me on both Vista Ultimate (32 bit) and Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) - if you're having trouble, make sure you install by right-clicking the downloaded SETUP.EXE file and choosing "Run as Administrator" from the pop-up menu rather than just double-clicking the file. I'm having no problems either windowed or full-screen on either OS.

I've had issues with Realore games in the past when I ran them on something like a laptop that used a wide-screen resolution. If the that's your situation and the game crashes or doesn't respond when you run it, you might try editing GAME.INI in the game's folder (C:\Program Files\Realore\Tiny Cars 2 is the default on 32-bit systems) and change the value "Fullscreen=1" to "Fullscreen=0" to force the game to run in a window instead of fullscreen. Changing that setting allowed me to run a couple of their games on my laptop that would not run initially because they defaulted to fullscreen mode and apparently couldn't handle widescreen resolutions.

Hi TopazMystique,

Try re booting your modem and if you have a re-router boot that as well, Also clear out your internet cache, if you use I.E.7 or 8 just right click on your internet icon and select internet properties, this opens up a window that should have buttons for clearing things like browsing history, cookies and temporary files. If you're using Firefox you need to click on the tools menu, then select clear private data from the drop down menu. Check Cache; Note that any other checked items will also be cleared, so un-check any that you do not want to clear. Click the Clear Private Data Now button, thats in Firefox 3.0.
Firefox 3.0. In older versions of Firefox do the following. Click the Tools menu. Click Options. Click Privacy. Click the Clear button for Cache.

Sometimes the cookies that help to load the giveaway pages may become corrupted. Doing all three of these (re-booting modem and router and clearing the cache) usually clears up the problem - I've had the same thing occasionally and following the above steps always fixes the problem. Let me know if it works. If not we will have to think of something else. Have you checked out the games I linked to? There are at least five that are basically the same type of game, ones a truck driving game Mad Truckers) and another a cold war racing game (KGB Hunter), plus Street Racer, Real Racing and Mad Race, plus several more.

Regards

W.R.

Windows Security??

Dude, get an antivirus that actually works. Avira or Avast, both are free and rate higher than the rest.

And know that as I type, you HAVE a virus. It is probably busy destroying your files or mailing itself to all your friends. Or worse, it could be sending your banking info to the writer who is looking to steal your money, your life and identity. Or, all of the above.

You did not get this virus from a file downloaded from this site.

But the "where" does not matter. What matters is that you fix it. Go get one of the antivirus progs i suggested, and kill that Windows security crud.

And before you argue that your windows security stuff is good, consider that you have said the it has warned you that you HAVE a virus. Too late, a good antivirus wouldn't have let a virus in in the first place. Paying for virus removal???? Wow. There IS a sucker born every second.

Great giveaway today...thanks!!!!!

Terry, thanks for your response to my request for help. I have Win 7 64 bit. I guess that's the problem. The regular GOTD programs so far are all running on it, but the games are not. No one is totally useless. My favorite evangelist has no arms and no legs but he has given hugs and hope to thousands of people all over the world. I gave up on this type of game (fast paced action) years ago figuring I didn't have the manual dexterity or eye hand coordination necessary to master it. I've been able to rediscover the joy of gaming on this site thanks to GOTD, WR and others who facilitate the quest of so many for diversion and challenge.

Windows Security alert popped up during game play.
Had to stop playing, un-install the game and run scan.
GGOTD, ya'll need to start checking for spywares and viruses. I am tired of paying for viruses removal over a lousy measley game..

Moderator Comment:

All files given away by the giveaway project are tested for viruses. No one else has complained of a virus, so maybe you already had the virus from another source? I've downloaded many giveaway games and have never had a problem with viruses. You said Windows Security - I though that came bundled with your O.S. Try checking the files you download before you install them. (don't mean to be sarcastic, I'm in a hurry to watch a program on TV thats just starting. (Dr Who Waters of Mars)

Hi Needforguns. There's an updated version of Death Track available via Steam called Death Track: Ressurection. I got it on a deal several months ago, but I'd easily have paid full price for it. Its now £15.99. An excellent game that I play frequently:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/7840/

Photobucket

You can see over a hundred screencaptures from the game and some videos HERE. There's a demo version of the game available from Gamershell. McAfee has given them a red flag recently, though I've never had problems with the 1000 plus files I've downloaded from them. Apparently they have linked to a couple of suspect sites so have been given a red.

Another Steam game you might consider which has a mix of Cars destroying each other and a death race 2000 feel to it with the addition of zombie killing. Though it's not really a racing game is called Clutch:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/7840/

that ones a little more expensive at £19.99

I bought a game called Crashdays that might be okay as well. Great graphics and you’ll probably be ably to pick a copy up for around £3.50 (via Play.com) The cars definitely have mini guns and rocket launchers in that game. There's a mix of demolition derby and racing involved.

Streets of Moscow is a racer with a difference. No shooting, but you do a lot of smashing into cars.

The only free game that I can think of off the top of my head at the moment is Darkwind, which I've already posted about in the Wheeled games thread. It's an online racing game with similarities to Death Track, but in a more post apocalyptic environment.

Photobucket

Finally you can get the original Flatout from Good Old Games for only $5.99. The handling of the cars are a little suspect at times, but its still a brilliant game. You can get Flatout 2 from Direct 2 Drive for just over three times as much, but it's worth it because you get updated graphics, more mini games and much better handling. Don't bother with the Ultimate version though unless you're into collecting games because its just a revamped Flatout 2 with the number of cars you race against increased from 8 to 12 and yet more graphics improvements (mainly through shading) Flatout isn't a death rally type game, but you do spend a lot of time trying to demolish your opponents cars. :)

I hope at least one of the above games will bring joy to you.

Great game today. Have been looking for a tolerable racing game for my 7-year old laptop rocking the then latest 1Ghz, 512mb, and intel integrated video. Even tho I have the nerves of a celery, I still appreciate the (virtual) excitement of speed once in a while.

Question: Any recommendations for a windows-native death rally type game, with similar system requirements to today's giveaway? I have been looking for a windows replacement of the old dos game "Death Track" that wouldn't tax my poor little lappy too much. I76 came close, but it had control issues with less weapon varieties. I skimmed thru Whiterabbit's free game lists and can't seem to find a windows native racing-shooter (all dos or flash). Could the forum experts suggest a few? I'm ready to pay a few bucks too if there're no free alternatives.

Running fine on Windows 7 (32 bit) here. I immediately set it to run in a window, but it looked okay full-screen. Only problem I had was the default arrow-key keyboard layout is really tough because you control steering and forward/reverse with one hand. I went into options and re-mapped the forward and reverse keys to Z and X, and that made the game MUCH easier.

Nice cute time killer. I wouldn't have paid $20 for it, but it's a good freebie.

Hi Henry, if you check the game discussion forums, or in particularrly the free games synopsis, you'll find a link to download Death Rally, which is now free. It's a very good game, though the graphics by todays standards are pixilated, that doesn't detract from the game. You can also find Death Rally

Introduction and Installation:

Today’s game originally received 89% of 166 votes when it was first given away back in Feb 2007. You can read the comments from then HERE, then again in January 2008, HERE. The comments from the third time were more an argument about whether to write or not to write negative comments so I've not bothered posting the link.

The initial download is 10.2Mb expanding to 19.1Mb; hardly enough to fill a hard disk. The game installs to C:\Program Files\Realore\Tiny Cars 2 by default, but, as with most games you can change the install path to whatever you wish during the installation wizard. Shortcuts are installed to the desktop and the Start menu programs list. You'll also find an uninstaller in the start menu. :)

Lockett wrote a very good negative review of the game in January 2008 that slated the game because of its game play. You can find it somewhere in the game discussion thread and will be in the posted from over a year ago.

Here's what the developer had to say about the game:

The old amusing arcade racing game is back! All fans' requests came into play in more bonuses, the multiplayer mode, and advanced cars. What is really important is that the game became more interesting and adventurous! Explore new realities of competing against your friends and relatives! Be the first bombing your competitors! Take advantage of new spirited tracks! Dump the oil to put your competitors out of action! Have real double fun!

Reference accessed HERE on the 14th Nov 09

The Game:

I'd actually say it's not that bad a game despite my initial feelings. I found it very hard to control the cars that you had available initially at least; However it's one of those games that once you've had a little practice the controls become easier and therefore the game improves as well. You just need to spend some time practicing first. Once that’s accomplished the game is actually quite good and fun to play. Okay it's not Fuel, Grid, Burnout or the latest Need for Speed game, but as an arcade racer its actually quite good with a good selection of cars and race tracks to choose from. The only thing I didn’t like was the music, but that can be turned off.

Photobucket

The options Menu allows you to adjust the sound effects and music and you can customize the controls which are keyboard only in game. You can also use the mouse to select menu options. According to the help menu you can also use a joystick in game.

The default movement keys are the arrow keys and to select bonuses that you have picked up use the enter or space keys. You can also select either full screen or windowed mode.

There are four bonuses to collect in game, but you can only carry one at a time. Once you’ve selected a particular bonus you can upgrade it twice by collecting the same colored bonus, this either gives you more missiles or increases the length that the other bonuses are active. The bonuses are quite plentiful, and once picked up regenerate after several seconds. To select a new bonus you have to discharge whatever bonus you are carrying. Single bonus effects last for 4 or 5 seconds and increase accordingly each time you add an upgrade. Only two upgrades are allowed.

Photobucket

Green………..Speed
Yellow……….Oil
Blue………….Shield
Red…………..Missile

There are three modes of play, Single Race, Championship and Multiplayer.

In single race mode there are initially 3 car and five race tracks to choose from. The single race mode is a timed mode. To win you have to complete the race within a specified time; (which I’ve not figured out yet). As you complete more races and earn points more cars and races are unlocked. In championship mode there are six categories. You start at novice level. To unlock new championships you need to have earned a certain number of points:

Photobucket
Championship Cups

Novice – 5 tracks 15 points
Advanced – 6 tracks, 20 points
Bronze – 7 tracks – 25 points
Silver – 8 tracks, 30 points
Gold – 9 tracks, 35 points
Platinum – 10 tracks – 40 points

Scoring:

1st position -----4 points
2nd position-----3 points
3rd position------2 points
4th position------1 point

To progress in championship mode you have to earn points. Once the necessary points have been earned the next championship cup is unlocked which means more tracks to race in.

There are 9 cars; 6 of which need to be unlocked before you can use them. Each car has a different name and characteristics, which you can see via the car selection screen. These include acceleration, weight, breaking and handling. You’ll find that one car is suitable for certain types of race. Part of the fun of this game, apart from unlocking new content and winning races is being able to find which cars race better on which tracks (well for me at least, lol). You can also select from four different colors, red, blue, green and yellow.

When I checked the multiplayer option, there were no servers available. I installed the game on my Vista laptop to check to see if I was able to set up a game using one on my computers as a server, but it didn't work, so I really don't see the point in having the option. I tried using three different computers and the game wouldn't show in the lobby. If anyone works out how to get this to work online please post what you do here.

Photobucket
Photobucket

You can set up your profile from the single race option and choose from either normal or hard difficulty. (I’ve not worked out the differences between each level yet) Once this is done you can choose whatever cars are available and then select its color. Only 3 cars are available at the start of the game and although there are nine different cars (which I found in the games installed folder) only five cars show up in the selection screen Each car has a name such as Lassie or Froggie, Choose your car according to its attributes which I’ve already discussed above. Once this is done you can choose initially from four different races:

Race tracks:

• Hawaiian Breeze

• Sleeping Castle

• Spring Rush

• Forestland

• Country road

• Indian Summer

• Evening Canyon

• Winter fairy tale

• Mountain Gorge

• Desert drive

Photobucket
Photobucket

While in game you can pause it by using the Esc key. This brings up an in game menu that allows you to either re enter the race you paused or abort the game. Doing this will take you back to the main menu.

Images:

You can see all the screen captures I took on one page HERE or as a slide show HERE. Finally, HERE are some images I Googled.

Conclusion:

Despite initial misgivings I really like this game. It only takes a few practice rounds to get used to the control options. For those with joy sticks it may play even better due to the force feedback you usually get (what I mean by that is; using keybord controls when turning a corner its all or nothing with the keys, whereas using a joy stick you can emulate turning a steering wheel, so going around corners is much easier – {unfortunately the two joysticks I have (Simon you forgot to take one of the Joysticks when you visited in August) have the old 15 pin plugs and don’t fit into any sockets on my computers}.

There are enough options and un-lockable content to keep me wanting to play for quite some time, so I think this arcade racer is worth at least a 7 out of 10 despite Lockett’s damning review which you can find in the game discussion forums (somewhere).

Thank you Realore for giving yet more games away and to the giveaway team for finding them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alternatives:

Here’s several related games that you can download from Gametop. Please be aware that during installation you may need to uncheck tick boxes otherwise you’ll find new toolbars in your browser and also it’ll be opening up to Gametops page. Both are easily remedied if you do happen to miss the check boxes in your enthusiasm for getting the games installed. But it’s also even easier to avoid the problem altogether and make sure all tick boxes are unchecked. The first few are very similar to today’s game in that they are top top racers. Just click on the name of the game to go to the download page.

Mad Race

Mad Truckers

Real Racing

KGB Hunter

Street Racer

The following games are all third person:

City Racing

Extreme Racers

Nitro Racers

ATV Quadro Racing

Motoracing

Other vehicle games:

Monster Truck Challenge

Star Racing

You’ll also find several more car related games over at FreeGamePick HERE and loads of freeware games , online racers such as Trakmania Nations and Darkwind and abandone ware titles in the Wheeled games thread and the free games synopsis over in the forums HERE and HERE
