The game took a bit of time to download and opened quickly. I do like the voice talking between plays. The match 3 was easy until I began going higher up, then no choice but to use the power ups when no matching colors. My only concern would be if you run out of power ups! I used story and relaxed mode and play was easy. Finding the objects was very easy also. The match pieces remind me of M&M's and play was smooth.

The Legend of the Golden Tome
A MPC game that downloaded and installed well. like usual from them ;)
And another Match-3, but w/a twist, as hidden inside are some HOG puzzles and it makes it an interesting game. Did get annoyed a bit by the voice over as others mentioned, but once I turned that down and entered relax mode it made it much nicer to play.

Glad it worked for you. Now that i think more about it, it was an Alawar game that had that issue back then.

Another nice little game today! I like the graphics style, and the swapping from HOG to Match keeps the interest going.

Quick and easy to download, and I didn't have any bother with false reports - Win Def seems to cope with that very well, most of the time.

As usual I had a fairly short intro test run, but I'll admit it did go on a little longer than intended. Which is probably a vote of confidence, I suspect.

I do like games that I can play for a short break from work, and then go back to as and when the mood takes me - or when inspiration leaves me! - so this kind of episodic game is perfect for me. Thanks again to all concerned in the Giveaway -I shall be back!

That error message is sometimes thrown up when your security blocks the installation. I had to re-download the file after my security deleted the file. If you temporarily turn off your security or install in safe mode, the game will install. Please read my comments to others who have been having problems. Thank you. regard W.R.

Thanks to White Rabbit and My Play City for a very enjoyable game.
The HOG and Match 3 really breaks up just one Match 3 after another nicely. I was impressed with the clarity of the runes as all those tiles can just run together.
The problem I am having is it will not save my game and player name when I stop for awhile and come back to play again. I've searched the threads and online, but have never had this happen before.
Hope it is okay to post this issue here.

Of course it is. We had issues with game snot saving some years ago with a particular game. Turned out it wouldn't accept certain characters. Try using a different name for saving. Don't know if it will work, but it's worth a try. Hopefully someone from the community will suggest other fixes. I don't have the time to play the game further today.

The only "negative" is the voice over. Nice game, fun concept pairing these two genres

Barbara, here is an easy way to fix these issues. Right-click on the game shortcut and choose "Troubleshoot Compatibility" to let Windows make settings changes for you. It will allow you to play the game testing each change until you're satisfied that it works properly.

Well, that was BIZARRE. Never have an issue with these, but this time, it downloaded fine, I unzipped the file, clicked on setup.exe as always, but it never set up---just said it was now activated (the step that usually comes AFTER the setup, and that was it. No game. Would have liked to try this.

When I first tried to install it deleted the executable. It's likely your security is stopping the installation due to the Themida wrapper, which has also been used to hide malware, so some security software will automatically stop anything with Themida wrappers from installing. try temporarily turning off your security, or try installing in safe mode.

This game looked interesting as I use match 3s to unwind, relax, or to pass time when I am ill and don't want to think too hard. I looked at reviews on other websites as well. My advice would be to add a relaxed mode, especially since it has some levels that are difficult. I chose not to get it because it doesn't have a relaxed mode, and I don't want to get stressed out by a match 3 game. :P Thanks for offering the game!

No problems during download.
No problems detected after doing pre-scans and post-scans with Win10 Defender, SAS free, MBAM free, EEK free, GSAM (all definitions updated).
The package is too big to be sent to some AV web services (jotti, virscan): virustotal and metadefender show no problems.
Same false positives were found for GAOTD setup.exe, I won't repeat them.
No problems during installation, at game startup and when changing its options.

I'm using:
- Windows 10 home/standard x64, DEP always on, custom scaling 150%.
- Resolution 1920x1080, color depth 32bit, refresh rate 60Hz.

I like this game because is it a Combo. Both Match and HOG. This can be a game for those who don't normally like a HOG. If you have never played one before then this one is very, very good one for you to start; because is goes through the beginning with you in a clear and simple manner. Designed so yu can learn. This one is also good at a Match first timer. The Graphics are great to excellent. It has an opening trailer or movie that is great. I enjoyed the "Celtic" theme I'll call it. I cannot see how to improve this one, I am glad it is Simple. I stated at the beginning and progressed through a few levels and was not bored at all. It installed like clockwork on my 10 pro 64x, very fast DownLd and Install. It does have the differing modes of play which is great (Relax). It progresses to be a challenging game later on, so that an experienced player or newbie is good, and not bored or disheartened. This one is an all around great game. I hope you all really enjoy it; Like myself. Normally I like Shooters.

Thanks, MyPlayCity, Stephen, and GGOTD, for offering this game. I had it before on a different computer, and enjoyed it. I like the relaxed (not timed) mode. It's been some time since I played it, but I do remember going through the story part the first time around, then there is the option to merely play the match-3 part, which I did many times. I like the darker colors of the runes (which I think of as ancient, petrified m&m's.)
For a while, I had trouble installing games from MyPlayCity, due to my Emsisoft Anti-Virus program, but then I found that adding the folder C:\Users\[my name]\AppData\Local\Temp\ to my white list did the trick, as this is the part of the installation that had been holding things up. It's getting harder to find free match-3 games that aren't silly-story, cartoonie, candy-bombing experiences. Those are fine, but just not my style, and this game is none of those, which is fine with me. I look forward to playing it again.

Nice game, however I had a problem with it shutting down. I was in Story Mode, Relaxed play. I completed the first scene then it closed and I got a Windows error box. I will try it again later, but this was discouraging.

When I tried to install today's game my anti-virus program said it contained a virus and shut down the installation.

My security deleted the executable, so I had to re download it. The reason is not becasue there is malware. Most giveaways are now protected by a Themida based wrapper. Themida code has also been used to hide malware, so some anti malware suites will block any installation using Themida as a precaution. The game giveaway has been operating for over a decade now and has never given away a game infected with malware. You can rest assured the download is safe. You may have to either install the game in safe mode, disable your security temporarily or configure your security to allow the installation to go ahead.

Sundays game giveaway is almost 1GB in size, so, if you usually download late in the day and also have a slow internet connection be sure to start downloading as soon as you are able to avoid disappointment.

Any comment not about the game for example complaints, or if deemed unfriendly or inappropriate, will be deleted (usually with no explanation) or added to the spam folder, which automatically black lists the IP address you used. Although I have enjoyed responding to many of those comments, I will no longer waste my time answering comments from community members who should have read the moderation policy.

Negative feedback about the games given away will always be welcomed because they can also be very constructive for developers, however, complaining about the way the site is operating or problems about downloading or installing the games or about Steam keys not received should be directed to the giveawayoftheday contact form (with evidence of completed tasks if needed). The Legend of the Golden Tome downloads to a 53.2 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 57.7 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

The Game:

For centuries the Druids recorded their magic spells in a book they called The Golden Tome, and to protect these powerful spells from those who might misuse them, they hid the Tome, and also the six crystals that open the gate to the Tome. In order to locate these crystals, you must solve the series of Rune puzzles, in the form of Match 3 puzzles, which they have created as a test. Will you prove worthy?

Matching 5 rune stones in a horizontal or vertical row will add 20 seconds to your allotted time. ~ Save your power-ups until you need them to keep from losing a life; the unused power-ups are rolled over to the next rounds, and since the game keeps getting harder, you’ll need them even more, later in the game. ~ The number of lives you have remaining is indicated in the lower right corner of the screen. ~ At any point you can press the F1 key to get the rules, including the functions of the various power-ups (called bonuses). ~ Each time you return to the game, the background story is told again; to skip over it, click on the red button in the top right corner.

First rescue the power-ups by making matches below them, forcing them drop to the bottom of the screen, and break any chain as it appears. More power-ups appear randomly and you must release those also. ~ In this particular Match 3 game, after I’ve broken the chains and rescued the power-ups, in order to break the tiles behind the rune stones, I find it best to work on the matches at the bottom of the board, and let the tiles get broken automatically as the rune stones fall. ~ When the board contains only Runes with nothing behind them, look at the color bowls, see which colors are still visible, and match those colors to fill those bowls; when they are full they will get covered, so as long as you can see the color in the bowl, keep matching that color.

When a rune stone appears that looks like a stylized flower or mandala, you have found one of the six crystals. Rescue it by making matches below it. ~ Nothing can be matched with a crystal, nor can a crystal be swapped using the Swap power-up. ~ Rune stones frozen with ice can’t fall, but they can be unfrozen by matching with regulars of the same color. ~ The black stone, which look like a shiny black marble engraved with a gold II symbol, can’t be broken, nor can it be matched. ~ Similarly, brick walls can’t be broken, and since they block the downward flow, you should try to slide any crystals or power-ups to the left or right before they reach a brick wall.

I found this to be a really difficult game. Not only do you need to release the power-ups from the board, you also must break the wooden or metal tiles behind some of the rune stones, and you must fill the color bowls along the right side of the screen by matching enough rune stones of each needed color, all within the given time period as indicated by the green column on the left. Meanwhile, chains will randomly appear and lock one of the rune stones, and you must break that chain. And there is not an untimed option. Lose all your lives and you lose all the crystals and power-ups and points you’ve amassed, and you must start over from the beginning.

The Jigsaw Puzzles were pleasant, but the Hidden Object scenes were repeated again and again and again — always with the same objects in exactly the same places — and that really tried my patience.

I can recommend this game only for experienced gamers who have finished all their games and are looking for another challenge. However, I must confess — as difficult as this game is — in the beginning I found it rather compelling and I wanted to keep trying. (Perhaps the gentle encouragement that the Druid gave between levels actually works?) But when I kept losing all my lives and had to start over, again and again, I knew I was wasting my time.

The Legend of the Golden Tome is a Druidic match three game that includes three distinct play modes and many magical objects. This game gets hard towards the end, but mastering the basics will push you along.

The Legend of the Golden Tome basics involve matching three identical runes by clicking one rune, then clicking an adjacent rune, to swap the two. All runes have two distinguishing marks: symbol and color. Color is easier to distinguish, and should be your primary method of identifying runes.

Hidden Objects Mode - The first mode for Legend of the Golden Tome is a hidden objects game. Look at the objects in the bottom bar, then click them in the garden image above. Look for things that look odd, like a barrel near a door or a rake in a tree. This mode is hard initially, because this is the first time you see the garden image. Memorize this image, because it is used repeatedly.

If you get stuck, wait for the blue hint bubble towards the left to fill up. Click it, and it will show you where the next object is hidden. Besides taking about a minute to fill up, there is no penalty for using the hint bubble. Time is not a factor in this game mode, except for determining your score, so take as long as you need.

Breaking Blocks Mode - The second game mode is all about matching three runes and breaking blocks. In the rune grid, you will see two different colored boxes: brown and black. The brown ones must be smashed. To do this, you have to match runes in that box.>

Runes can be moved out of the brown boxes, but the boxes themselves are stationary. Unlike the hidden object mode, you are timed. If the timer is getting low, stop focusing on the brown boxes and start making matches anywhere on the grid. This will help you get extra runes to make matches needed for the brown boxes.

Filling Orbs Mode - The second game mode is all about matching three runes and breaking blocks. In the rune grid, you will see two different colored boxes: brown and black. The brown ones must be smashed. To do this, you have to match runes in that box.

Runes can be moved out of the brown boxes, but the boxes themselves are stationary. Unlike the hidden object mode, you are timed. If the timer is getting low, stop focusing on the brown boxes and start making matches anywhere on the grid. This will help you get extra runes to make matches needed for the brown boxes.

Colored Orbs Mode - The third game mode in Legend of the Golden Tome is filling colored orbs. There are seven orbs to the right of the screen, and each one represents a rune. For example, the blue orb signifies blue runes. Match blue runes, and the orb will fill up. When the rune is full, it will close.

Pay attention to the orbs. If an orb is already full, then stop working on that colored rune because there is no bonus for matching more runes then needed, besides getting extra points for the match. Just like the breaking blocks mode, there is a timer to watch out for.

Every two or three rounds you will return to the hidden objects game. Unlike the first time, you will receive a special item for finding the objects. These items appear on the grid, sometimes randomly and sometimes they start there.

To use an item, get it to the bottom of the grid by matching runes underneath it. Click the item from the bottom bar to activate the effect. When you get the item for the first time, a menu will describe its effect. The hammer, for example, can break any block you want. The circle allows you to match any two runes, regardless of position.

Hints & Tips:

Always pay attention to the timer (assuming you choose the timed mode). The Legend of the Golden Tome only gives you a few lives, and if you lose them you have to start from the beginning. The timer is your worst enemy, so concentrate both on the grid objective, and making matches to keep the timer high. For an extra 20 seconds, match five of the same rune.

Only use the special items when you need them. If you use the item immediately, chances are you wasted it and won’t have it for a real emergency.

Always pay attention to the hints and tips Golden Tome gives you. These hints come up whenever you encounter a new type of block, or get a new special item. Also, if you can't find any matching runes, a mystical oval will appear around two runes.

Go after heart tiles to get extra lives. You only get a limited amount of lives, and if you run out you have to start from the beginning. Like special items, you need to get the heart to the bottom of the grid to collect it.

Chained runes are released by making a match involving the chained block. Releasing the chained rune will help, but it is not needed to beat a grid.

Don’t repeatedly click the screen during the hidden object game. After three successive clicks, the mouse pointer turns into a lock. This means you can’t click anything for the next few seconds. If you really can’t find something, it is best to wait for the hint bubble.

Hammer: Use it to break a tile, rune stone, chain, double chain, stone or metal layer, or ice that is keeping you from winning the round before you run out of time.

Swap: It looks like a circle made by connecting two arrows; to use it, select 2 rune stones to switch their positions, making one or two vital matches.

Conclusion:

The Legend of the Golden Tome is a reasonably decent match Three with a weaker Hidden Object game included. I thought the Hidden Object scenes were far too easy, but they may be okay for the very young, who probably have keener eyes. This should keep the family occupied on a cold, rainy weekend. 7 out of 10

If you subscribe to the Humble Monthly, which costs $12 a month you not only get a large collection of decent Steam games you will also get for the first month of the subscription Total War: Warhammer, which was released last Spring and costs $59.99/£39.99. I personally haven't bothered, but only becasue I usually have already purchased most of the games included in the monthly bundle. I've posted a list of over 100 Steam games in the forums HERE, some of which I will giving away to those community members who post decent feedback for the game given away that day. It is quite an extensive list of games taken from the 10 000+ Steam keys I've collected over the last several years; all were either purchased by me, or received free for pre-ordering games on Steam, plus a few from entering competitions and other offers). There will be a limited number of other keys available, such as Origin, uPlay and Desura keys (Desura has recently been purchased following the original owners demise and should be up and running by the end of March). I will announce the winner's from the giveaway the following week. If no announcement is made, it means no one posted feedback that qualified for a free game that week. There were no winners from the previous two weeks, though I am still considering a couple of comments from last week. I will inform those community members if I decide they are worth a game by email. If you have won a game, I will also post details in the thread I've created specifically for that purpose HERE. Once I've given a key away, the game and any comments by the winner will be removed from the list.

Depending on the quality of the feedback, I may choose to award games to more community members for each game given away, 'at my discretion'. The feedback must be about the game, and it must include a couple of paragraphs of feedback following the guidelines I've posted in the suggestions section of my review. i.e. your opinion of the game, what you liked and/or disliked plus suggestions for improvement. If you choose a game that is very cheap I may give you a second game; so, when choosing from the list I provide, please list more than one choice. If a game is chosen by more than one community member and only one key is available the key will go to the one I deem the most useful. I do have multiple keys for quite a lot of the games I've listed, so, don't be put off if you see someone else has chosen the game you want. I haven't indicated any of the games I have multiple keys for (though for example I do have several keys for the excellent Western themed AAA game Call of Juarez, which i picked up for free for purchasing several games via the Indie Gala store several months ago. spending a few dollars got me a copy of the game, so I made several separate purchases over a couple of days while the offer was still live.

I do own at least three community members a game from the previous giveaways that I posted several months ago. I'd totally forgotten about those. I do have a document with their names on, so they will get a game from the original list when I find the document (I'm extremely disorganized); or they can peruse the new list and choose something different. Just post a comment over in the forums in the appropriate thread. If you do post feedback with a view to getting one of the games and think you have covered the requirements, you don't have to do anything until I announce the winners the following week.
