As I do not install or try and install all GOTD offers I cannot say if it works or does not work with all or with some, that being said, there was no problem until recently (within the last 3 months). Previously I unpack and ran the setup, no problems, now, nothing happens, no error messages, nothing. As far as offering GOTD information, I have provided all I can in the past, nothing came of it. As I cannot verify why the software does not install and I can see that there are *two* setup.exe's running (I provided details on these and they are the correct ones), and one of them is supposed to be the setup from the manufacture, I can only thumbs down the product due to the installation failing.
So, I provided the information to GOTD previously, this was ignored.
Used to work, even with the newer GOTD installer, then just stopped; again details previously provided.
I checked and rechecked my end, nothing helps; not even GOTD.
GOTD packager unpackages *two* files and starts the setup.exe in the package and waits for it to end; thus, until GOTD can prove otherwise, the manufactures installation fails to execute correctly and a thumbs down is given due to the manufactures installation failing to complete execution.
Now, who am I'm blaming? As you can see, I have tried what I can including trying to contact GOTD directly. From what I can see, the GOTD installer/packager is working and they are pointing to the manufactures installer failing by not answering or providing any assistance.
No answer/assistance in a support environment = we don't consider it our problem. Thank you very much.
Complain all you want. Others are reporting the same situation. None are being helped.

I was unsure whether the game had downloaded fully when Firefox decided to reboot for updates. Downloads have been extremely slow since I installed Windows 10, taking hours and failing frequently. I've missed a couple of games because of this as they didn't finish within the allotted 24 hours. This is despite having a fibre optic connection. Anyway, I was fortunate on this occasion as the game installed and ran with no problems at all. I'm really glad I got this one! I've been playing for the past 3 hours and it is different from all the other games available. The closest being the "Rescue Team" kind of games which I also really like. This does it all on one huge screen which scrolls when the mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen. There are a few instructions at the beginning, but most of it is pretty easy to figure out. It was a bit frustrating at first, having to go back to the centre of the map to pick up the idle workers, until I discovered that you can scroll though them and pick them up from the worker menu at the bottom left of the screen. I'm really enjoying the game, so I can't really find any fault with this one!

Me likey. At first i thought it's yet another very dull yet again time-management but it's actually quite decent executed.
The german title for the game is Ghostville (can be found on the german Alawar homepage) and you can use the two localization XML files from the Data\xml folder in todays giveaway version (replace the english ones in the same location) to play in german.

As usual, installed and runs fine on my old Vista system. Despite some peoples' misgivings about "lost souls" or other subject matter, this is a cute game of gathering resources, researching new technology, and building/upgrading mines, farms, and other structures. The graphics are quite nice, the sound isn't irritating (there are volume controls for effects and music) and I didn't find the "hand holding" excessive (you can turn off the hints). And there is no timer! So gameplay is casual. The only thing I don't like is the Flying Pigs and Light Knights, which I find an irritant and a distraction from the rest of the game. Probably the best thing I can say is I meant to play a few minutes and it is now two and a half hours later. A definite thumbs up.

"Still, we get what we pay for, eh?" Well, I downloaded yesterday's game, and I got an error. But someone suggested a solution and I tried it and it worked. I then researched the situation and tried to provide some insight so others might not worry about that particular error. So, I paid with a little determination and the clear thinking to try someone else's advice, and I got the game. So, I would put it this way: you get out what you put in.

HI,
Had no problems downloading on 8.1. All went quickly. I should point out that I do have problems and cannot download any to
a laptop with 8. I like the look of it and is easy to run. You do one task at a time, sometimes have 2 open. I am sort of stuck
on trading right now, haven't figured out who or where to trade. One thing I don't like is the slowness of the workers. Could read
a book while waiting. I prefer faster action, perhaps a speed up option?
Thanks for another good game!
have a great week,
Lee

Win10 64bit. Loaded and played fine, no problems. I actually like this game. Thank you. Only part I didn't like was when you need to do housework and everyone in the game is asking for something. LOL Just exited anyway.

I had no problem downloading, extracting or installing. Running Win 7. The game is rather silly and confusing at times but after just finishing it, I rather liked it. When you have to sell 5 wood they actually mean planks, for those stuck, and keep some of the powders and vials as you may have more cooking to do with those later. The only glitching I noticed was some of the people wonder into walls and keep walking, you can click and move them though and they go on their way. Also if you put one on a task, sometimes they glide off to the other side of the screen/game map. They still keep working though so no big deal. All in all I love this one and even let my kiddo download it too. :)

Your sure it's GGOTD and not you who are wrong? There's 2 suggestions for you. Did you try them? Did you try all of the suggestions in the forum post Whiterabbit linked to? Have you tried researching the problem yourself? Read your application events on event viewer? Maybe, after you give GGOTD an answer on that, they may consider your request. You haven't specified if this is all the games? From all the developers? So maybe someone can see a pattern? All developers can't fix if it isn't happening on all games to all people. "God helps them that helps themselves." You give a thumbs down. Those of us for whom it works give a thumbs up. Have you compared the count lately?

Haven't had a chance to try the game, been too busy having cornflakes for lunch, walking the dog, and raking leaves. I'll be watching football today, then have meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner, before retiring for the night. Just sharing my exciting life like others on here.

Well, it was a very mixed bag this weekend. Both games downloaded and installed perfectly (Win7) but whilst I couldn't get past the first stage in Legionwood, I didn't feel like getting past the first stage of todays' game. The graphics are great but I had trouble manipulating the characters without getting the whole screen to move. I would have liked there to be a zoom out feature and a purpose for all their actions. I will persist with it for a little while but if it's too much trouble it will have to go. I did give both games the thumbs up because they looked interesting enough, I just have problems with RPGs and Sim games. However its great to at least try different games here, cost free, and for that many thanks to GGOTD and the developers. (and Stephen For the review and comments) Thank you all.

Always the same: The program or the installer is the "bad one"...
No, friends - search in YOUR system for the reason that something is not working.
I had no problem to install this on 3 different systems.
Are your drivers up to date - are the settings in your AV-program alright - are the system-requirements ok and so on...
Look at this - but don´t say the "GOTD Packager isn’t working correctly".

RE: "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"
As WR posted, please check the FAQ as well as relevant posts in the forum. What can happen is that security software can mistake the installer's behavior for malware [not the files themselves], & delete or quarantine that archive. And if it's no longer there, that certainly qualifies as being damaged.

AFAIK it was the game's installer, not the GOTD part, that caused installation to fail on Windows 10, & apparently Windows 8/8.1 systems. If that's correct, the game dev [Immanitas Entertainment] would have to repackage it in another installer, or fix the one they used. They might or might not, but the game's requirements on the Game GOTD page said: "Windows XP/ Vista/ 7 (x32/x64)", meaning they knew of the problem with 8-10, so my guess is probably not.

Thank you Alawar and GOTD. I opened this fine. All seems to be working properly.. Love the kind of bobble head characters..lol.. Installed on Win 7 64 bit. No problems. Quick download.

I was having that problem too until I temporarily turned off the virus protection before downloading and installation. Now I can get the games again...might be worth trying.

I've had no interest in the games that have been offered the last few weeks. I don't like "HALLOWEEN" themed games and was certainly hoping for a return to normalcy. Oh well.

I'm finding it clunky and slow. Be good if it was possible to zoom out to see more of the map as well.
Disappointed that yesterdays game was a lemon and didn't install. I thought maybe it might have been carried over to today since it seems nobody was able to get it. Still, we get what we pay for, eh? :)

No problems either downloading, extracting or installing on Win7 Home Premium. Very nice graphics for what so far seems to be an enjoyable distraction. As Mavadelo already said, it seems to be 'sim-like', which is good if you need to unwind! I didn't have more than an hour or so to devote to trying it today tho, so hopefully others can give a more in-depth analysis.

Yet another product that cannot be installed because the GOTD Packager isn't working correctly.
I previously reported this, nothing happened.
Unzip and run the setup. Task manager shows Setup.exe *32 13.612K and setup.exe *32 3.796 K and the nothing ever happens. Killing the process and retrying results in the same thing. Seriously GOTD, please fix this.
Yes, I know the argument about it isn't happening on all computers, not enough are complaining about it so it must be me right? WRONG! Perhaps you can invest some time in looking into the ones that are reporting it?
I can only give a thumbs down on this as, as a user, the installation fails to run, it doesn't matter if the installation is from GOTD or Alawar Entertainment, it fails and for me, Alawar Entertainment has put out a free application that cannot even be installed, making it a poor give away.
Hopefully GOTD will take this serious and look into the reason the installations are failing. So that the developers get a thumbs up/down based on the actual application and not the poor installation.

Why didn't you guys extend yesterday's game download? I downloaded it early yesterday and it didn't work and was waiting to see if you guys fixed the problem. I tried again to down load which it did but when went to install it said can't install. What the heck? Thanks anyway!

I really hope Rabbit had time to do at least a cursory review, as I must admit that after reading the blurb at the top, I've never been LESS interested in a game in my life! I deal with enough lost souls on a daily basis, and I certainly have no interest in helping build an afterlife. My life is h*ll enough without wanting/needing to simulate it! Wonder if any comments or reviews could make me think this could possibly be worth the bandwidth. ;)

If you get any hits by your anti malware suites, firstly it will be a false positive; the reason you may be getting a hit is because your anti-malware suite is picking up the Themida based protection, which was put in place to protect the game from unscrupulous community members that were hacking the giveaway wrapper which then gave them unlimited access to a registered copy of the game, and which was being put on peer to peer sites. Some community members were even uploading video tutorials on You Tube telling you how to do it yourself.
Themida based applications are sometimes seen as a threat by anti-malware. I can assure you this game and hundreds before, that have given community members cause for concern have been totally safe. The game giveaway team have managed to secure well over a thousand games for us since they first started giving games away back in late 2006 (firstly via the main site back in Oct 2006, then via the game giveaway site early December 2006). There has never been an infected game given away.
If you are able to configure your anti-malware suite to allow the 'offending' file through security, the game should then install normally. If you can't, or don't know how to, then the other way would be to temporarily turn off your protection. You do so at your own risk, but please do take into account what I've already said above; in a nut shell, every malware occurance reported here since the game giveaway went live in Dec 2006 have been false positives due to overly sensitive anti-malware suites.
It would be against the teams best interest to allow such an occurance as it would destroy their good standing with the big search engines and I'm sure many who have frequented this site for a long time would leave. The giveaway team use several antimalware suites to test every game given away here.
Another thing to consider when you think the game is infected, if it really was, there would be hundreds of community members posting about the infection; we rarely see more than a few posts for any particular game. Since the gcd file was introduced over the summer of 2012 I have seen many more community members reporting infections due to the Themida based code found in the giveaways wrapper protection. However, out of the thousands of downloads each week, those community members reporting a malware hit are considered insignificant and support the fact that the results they are getting are actually false positives. They have always been proven to be so.
The Happy Hereafter:
Installation:
The Happy Hereafter downloads as a 205 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me document that contains the terms and conditions and a wrapped dual activation and set up module and a security set up file (setup.gcd). Just for the newcomers amongst today’s users that means the game will be registered once it’s gone through the set up process, so there’s no registering the game with an activation code. The instal path is:
C:\Games\TheHappyHereafter_Game
There is no desktop or Start menu shortcuts intalled. Sometimes I've found the installation path shows the previous game I installed from this site, so to be sure you don't install the game inside a previous game, check the installation path when you start the installation. You can usually find where it's supposed to go by looking in the read me file that comes with the download. To stop this happening, clear your cache. The installed game is 554 MB in size.
If you have any problems installing or registering The Happy Hereafter, check the problems section below.
Introduction:
Reference accessed HERE Nov 8th 2015
If you miss today's giveaway The Happy Hereafter is available from MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE. Please do be aware that if you don't uncheck the checkboxes during installation, and sometimes everytime you boot up the game you will get toolbars installed, and possibly your home page changed or even your browser. Also everytime you close the game down, it will open your browser to MyPlayCities home page.
The Game:
In this game, you have to help the souls build a happy afterlife and create a Heaven in the underworld! Would have been more appropriate last week beofre Halloween, but, better late than never.
The Happy Hereafter is nothing really different from the usual Strategy/Sim games, Virtual Villagers alike. You have to assign tasks to your workers, build houses and machines, manage resources, make potions, trade and so on. What makes The Happy Hereafter stands out though, is the Halloween theme.
The visual design is weird but looks beautiful in its own way. The landscape looks pupleish and a little gloomy, but not so dark that will blind your eyes. The graphics are clear and the 3D artwork is pure greatness. The characters look funny and funky, however, unlike some other games - each character does not has its own ability, skill and you cannot train them. The soundtracks are on the upbeat side but suit the game surprisingly well.
The landscape in The Happy Hereafter is also expertly designed, full of interesting areas to discover. We would be super grateful if the areas in the game are easier to explore. As for now, you actually have to click and drag your mouse around to explore - it is fine for the first half an hour or so but it gets quite painful after a while.
Unfortunately, The Happy Hereafter fails a little on the task system. Most of the time you are being told what to do, the game even tells you what to do next if you left the Hint on. Many advanced players would definitely feel that the amount of hand-holding is beyond control. Even though the tasks are nicely thoughout, you cannot actually complete them before they appear on the left hand side of the screen. So basically, you have to follow every steps that the game tells you to do and one step out of the box might require some replay.
The Happy Hereafter has great presentation and potential gameplay, but it suffers from technical issues and too much hand-holding.

System Requirements:
Windows XP/ Vista/ 7/ 8
CPU: 1.6 GHz
System RAM: 512 MB
DirectX: 9.0
Hard Drive: 573 MB
Conclusion:
A simple Strategy sim game with a spooky Halloween feel to it, a little late for Halloween, but only just. :) There;s a lot of hand holding, so this will probably feel too easy for veteran players of his genre. It's ideal for beginners.
Scoring:
I haven't scored the game for the same reason as mentioned in the conclusion.
Graphics: 8
Sound: 7
Originality: 7
Gameplay: 8
Fun Factor: 7
37 out of 50 which is equivalent to 7.2 out of 10

Problems:
If you have any problems installing or getting today's game working, please go HERE for help. I've posted most of the common problems and solutions in a FAQ thread, which you can find in the sticky section of the forums by following the above link.
If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums; in the game discussion section, because I cannot moderate 24hrs a day over the weekend. I've created a thread HERE for that purpose. If you've installed the game but it doesn’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at a later date. Unfortunately if your problem is actually downloading it, once the giveaway deadline is reached you will no longer be able to download the game unless you've already started downloading it before the cut-off. Sometimes you can still register the game after the giveaway has ended so long as you managed to start the download before the giveaway ends. I've tested this and the grace period lasts for up to 1 hour. Apart from the above instances; i.e. already installed, but having problems running the game, (with the possibility of receiving help from the community via the giveawayoftheday game discussion forum); or still downloading after the cut off period, but within the 1 hour grace period, or registering within an hour of the cut-off period. Once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done to get the game (unless its available from one of the free game sites) until the game is given away again (though that isn't always guaranteed).
It's worth checking the giveaway game discussion forums the day before the giveaways go live to see if we are getting a large sized file (I usually post a comment about approximately how large a file is, though if I'm particularily busy I may neglect to do this). It is especially important for those who have slow connections and even more so if the game is popular. We can have up to forty thousand (40 000) community members downloading over the 24 hour period, with the bulk of community members downloading in the first 12 hours of the giveaway going live, there is always a massive strain on the giveaway servers. The bigger the file size, the more community members will be downloading at any one time. Because the bandwidth is shared equally amongst all community members, downloads can become excruciatingly slow, so if you do have a slow connection, its important to start your download as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Because these games are free, the giveaway owners cannot invest in more bandwidth without compromising the whole project, so we have to be satisfied with what we have at present.
A download manager can help speed the download up and also protect the download in case of an interrpution. There's nothing as frustrating for those with really slow connections to have the connection break after an hour or so, then have to start from the beginning again. I would ask community members if you do have decent bandwidth please avoid using a manager as it does add to the number of downloads occuring at any one time, for example some download managers will download your requested file in up to 32 packets simultaneously, that will take 32 download spots, thus slowing down everyone else's download speeds. For those with slow downloads (due to having a slow connection e.g. a 2MB Broadband connection or less) I would advise using a download manager if the file is larger than around 200MB. My broadband connection is 100MBs, so I don't need to use a download manager, (I do have one called Internet Download Manager, but don't use it when downloading files from the giveaway site). For me a 1GB file usually downloads in about 1.5 minutes or less. My connection is quite a long way from the provider so it is slowed a little, but is still quite good at a download speed of around 12 to 14 MB's per second.
I hope the above goes some way in expalining why we sometimes have really slow downloads.
It’s always worth checking out the free games sites because sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity (MPC) has the most with over 1000 games to choose from. The Happy Hereafter is available from MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE. I haven't checked the other free games sites.
If you do download any games from MyPlayCity, or the other free game sites please 'do' watch out for toolbars etc. Make sure you un-check the check-boxes during installation, and, in the case of MyPlayCity, every time you boot the game up, (this may have changed now as these free game sites tend to change the format frequently)....... I've posted links to all of the common free game sites below in the games, games games section. If you do download a game from any of these sites you do so at your own risk. We cannot be held responsible for problems arising from an installation recommended here. :)
For now I won't be recommending you download games from Jenkat Games. They have changed the way you get games from their site. Diane has posted information about this over in the game discussion forums. If I have time or remember, I'll link to it. TooMyk Games are now safe to download from. They have removed the games that were suspect and have cleaned up their act. As always, you download from those free game sites at your own risk. The giveaway site is the safest site I know of where you can get free software and games. The only disadvantages with downloading from here is you have to download and install within the day of the giveaway (apart from the instances mentioned above and if and when you upgrade or buy a new computer legally you aren't allowed to transfer games given away previously, unless they are being given away on the day you upgrade, or if you've purchased a licence. :)
You just have to look at the gamegiveawayoftheday sites track record since the game giveaway site was created back in December 2006. Zero games given away have been infected with malware, there are no toolbars installed, nor home pages hijacked or browsers changed. There is one slght annoyance, but that only occurs if a community member isn't paying attention when the final window pops up after installing a giveaway. That is the Software Informer installation. Some community members have complained that they were given no choice in its installation. That is not true; when the final window pops up, there are two buttons, one asking if you want Software Informer installed and the button to close the giveaway window down. Some community members have clicked on the wrong button, probably because they weren't paying attention. Thankfully Software Informer is a genuine application, that can easily be uninstalled by the usual means. It's actually a useful piece of software, especially if you have a lot of applications running on your computer. Basically the program will list the programs that need updating, or programs that have available updates. They wont be automatically installed (thus cancelling many giveaway registrations); you have to click on individual buttons to update each program/application. :D
Games, Games, and yet more Games:
There are 497 games on sale over on Steam. The weekend deals includes up to 85% off the excellent Trine franchise, 80% of the brilliant Age of Empires II HD edition (only £2.99 or equivalent in other currencies), plus there is a developers sale, this week it's the turn of Nordic games with titles like Darksiders, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2, Painkiller bundle, Red Faction Guerilla, (one of my favorite games), Spellforce franchise, The Guild franchise, the Gothic franchise, Titan Quest Gold (used to play this with my son a few years ago, excellent game), MVX vs. ATV Supercross Encore, Legend of Kay, plus more.
There are far too many other great deals to mention here, just check out the specials section for all 2300+ titles on sale HERE.
There's loads more in the weekly sales and the 48 hours sales to choose from. almost certainly something for everyone. The next set of weekly sales starts on Monday with usually a hundred or more titles added to the sales list. :)
You'll also find some excellent deals over on the following Game sites.
GreenManGaming They usually have coupons to the value of 23% and sometimes more off pre ordered games. I've just pre ordered Just Cause 3 XL and XCOM 2 using a voucher and saved £22 on the price paid in the Steam store
Gamersgate Summer Sale
GOG (DRM free games)
Gamestop
GameFly (soon to be sold off)
I've removed the Desura link because the owners are bankrupt and there has been no activity on the site in months. The servers are still live (at least until Bad JoJo's subscription to the servers has ended, Bad JoJo are the owners of Desura and Indie Royale, or were until filing for bankruptcy). If you own any games via Desura I advise downloading all of the drm free games you have on that platform and on the Indie Royale site before the sites are taken down.
Free Game Sites:
MyPlayCity (over a 1000 games to choose from)
Gametop
FreeGamePick
To be honest there are too many game deals around too list them all. Just visit the sites I recommend above and I'm sure you'll find something that suits you for a very decent price. If like me you prefer Steamworks games, many of the above sites also sell steamwork games.
If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles (there's over 20 of them - If you purchased all of them you'd be paying around $80 for around a thousand dollars worth of games); or check out the four day sales at IndieGameStand. you'll find the indie bundles thread HERE. The thread is outdated, but all of the links will still take you to the latest bundles.
The latest IndieGameStand is Fearless Fantasy. It's probably the weirdest RPG you’ll play this year. It’s a turn-based game that deeply involves players during every turn. You use gestures (with the mouse) to score critical hits, resulting in very involved and interesting gameplay on every turn.
