bart: Game installed size is ~300 MB (313861078 bytes) in my computer.
No problem with istall and play on Windows 7 64 bit, but... game deleted my profile at end of the adventure! No replay ending, no achievements, no name, no profile.

I enjoyed this game, the backgrounds were beautiful, but it was very short! I finished it in only a few hours.

I don't know. I keep getting an "access denied" text message. It may have to do with just my account. It is now saying I need to confirm my e-mail address and that it is sending a confirmation e-mail, but I never get it. I CAN access all my Steam and MD5 keys and everything else in my account, I just can't download the EXE files. :( (arrggghh!) It's apparent that no one is monitoring the site or e-mail account. And I agree, this is why I absolutely HATE game managers. I don't buy games unless I can get the DRM version - you are just asking to lose money using a game manager.

..............................Moderator comment..........................

I've loas tmy passwords for both my admin account and my forum account on a couple of occasions and every time I've tried to get anew password via my email, but have never received anything. The owners tried to email me a new admin pasword over my vacation as i wasn't able to moderate. In the end they posted the pasword in the comments section becasue they said they wern't able to contact me via email.

I agree regarding drm free. I just wish i'd continued buying hard copies of my favorite games (still do buy the odd game, but rarely so these days. 10 years ago i'd be buying several games every week from my local Games store and order as many from the game website. since i joined Steam back in 2009, I've purchase dmainly digital downloads.

With the Desura fiasco, I'm beginning to regret buying so many games via Steam (I'm fast approaching six thousand games {my account stands at 5887 games} and over four thousand dlc's on my steam account since 2009) I thought Desura was a safe bet, and have purchased games from them since 2006. Thankfully of the just under 1200 games I have on that account, virtually all of them, are drm free). I lost a lot of games when Reflexive were sold off to Amazon, I've lost games when Sandlot games disappeared and have lost games when Direct 2 Drive sold off their digital distribution - they've recently re-aquired it and put up a note saying anyone who was originally with Direct 2 Drive who lost games in the transfer 3 years ago, will not re-aquire them when they return to Direct 2 Drive. Somehow i think we are slowly being ripped off. The annoying thing from my pespective is, i've always purchased my games and have never ripped off a AAA game. Friends have sometimes given me the odd indie game registration after they have finished playig the game a si have also, but i've never ripped off developers using peer to peer sites etc, so for me drm is a nightmare and unwarrented punishment all in the name of profit.

Whiterabbit,

I believe Russ was pointing out the typo in the URL bar, which I don't think you are responsible for. I was agreeing with him on that and adding my comments about the typos in the game itself, some of which are understandable, since most of these games come from people whose native language was not English. Got to give them an A for effort, though.

.................................Moderator Comment.....................................

I agree; I'd be hard pressed to spell even a fraction of words in most languages, so I also give them an a for effort. :)

Not enough music in this one. It feels like the music goes on for 45 seconds, and stops for 3 minutes. I don't know if it's a bug or intentional. Otherwise this is a solid work. I love the character portraits and the pacing. This may be a little late, but it's a good release and I'll have to delve in further later.

.................................Moderator Comment.....................................

I looked for music files with a view to wring about changing the music . Only one small file was found. This surprised me as I usually find several different muisic files in games that have them.

Won't play on Windows 10. It stays at the beginning screen and I try to click to get it to the Play screen, then I finally got there and the mouse won't show up to move anything. Also the resolution is GIGANTIC on my PC.

I agree with LadyLei quite a bit on this one. Win 7 and only took a couple of hours to finish, although I didn't have problems with the graphics at all. However when I finished the game it went back to the main screen and asked me to play as guest or type my name. I'm pretty sure it deleted my game. Not that it matters because I finished it. I wasn't aware of the GamesWithCheats.exe mentioned above but I have it and will have to check that out.

Hi WR,

Well I had this game before on this computer and had no problems with it. Couldn't remember why I deleted it so downloaded again on Win Pro 7 32/64 i5. Had no trouble with the download or install. However when I tried to play the game it kept freezing up so I did a compatibility test and switched it to XP. Ran fine after that. The only thing that has changed on this computer was the trial run of Win10 which caused no end of problems and the subsequent switch back to Pro7.

I finished the game rather quickly and promptly deleted it. It's just not that good of a game to take up room on my hard drive. It started out okay, but got worse the closer I got to the disappointing end. I would rate it a 4 out of 10 overall. What ever it passed a couple of hours this morning while I was having my tea.

I did try turning off my malware and virus programs but it made no difference. Oh well...
I have been a grateful user of this site almost since it started and have gotten numerous games that I've enjoyed. I hope I can fix this problem so I can use them again!

............................Moderator comment............................

Have you tried clearing out your internet cache and/or rebooting your modem. These can sometimes fix the problem. i'd also check the event log immediately after trying; you mayf= find a useful error message that can give clues as to what the problem is.

Win10 Home 64bit. I had a problem starting it and the game was way to big for the screen, cursor went all wonky as above said, so had to Crt-Alt-Del again. Ran the compatibility and it now works with the higher DPI. Whats with the press Win key + R key and something else? No idea. Anyways, it does take awhile for the game to load and I did get to play a couple of scenes. Will try again later. Oh and I got that TwoDesperados thingy. Off to change that.

For some reason, the last few times I've tried installing a game, after the programs says it's checking to make sure it's available, I get a message saying it can't connect - try later. I try again and again with no luck. Nothing has changed on my computer that I'm aware of. Help?

.........................Moderator comment.........................

Hello Mary, have you checked the FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forum sticky section :?: You should find a fix there. becasue the setup.gcd file is themida based some anti malware suites see it as a threat and block the installation. Many community members have had this same problem and have found temporarily turning off your security allows the game to be installed. As I've mentioned countless times, the game giveaway site has given away well over a thousand games since its inception back in Dec 2006 and no game has ever been infected with malware partly becasue the giveaway team check all files with several malware suites to ensure they are clean. if they allowed malkware ridden games to be downlaoded they would lose their good standing with the big search engines and probaly lose many community members. I can assure you its safe to temporarily turn off your security, at least until you've installed the game, however I must say, you do so at your own risk.

If the game was infected you would be seeing many comments from disgruntled community members. instead you may see the odd one that have received false positives.

Nope. In spite of the somewhat lackluster review here I wanted to give this a try being a recent convert to HOG fandom.
This did install okay, if a bit slowly, via the "briefly disable anti-virus" route.
However, the first time I tried it it never loaded past the splash panel, the second time I got a flickering cursor that would not land on either create a player or play game, and the third time I got a notice that it was not the optimum resolution (with no hint for the computer inept on how to change that fact) plus a repeat of the vanishing cursor motif.
Maybe these were all discussed in comments or forums. I just come to play games. Yes, I read the comments, no I'm not a Pro From Dover when it comes to computer tweaks, and while I'm not a sports fan, I do accept the "three strikes and out" rule.
Not all GGOTD games work for me, sometimes I blame my machine, sometimes I accept the blame and sometimes I blame the game for being mot my style, not my speed or simply not that good. This time around I suspect a combination of the three.
I think it uninstalled pretty cleanly with Iobit Uninstaller.
Looking forward to whatever 3:00 AM est brings.
Oh, and I loved the "about as spooky as a well lit supermarket" line in the review. That may have been better writing than the game itself, so at least I got that much enjoyment out of it.

I know what you mean. Hardly anybody does any proofreading these days, so we get all these typos almost everywhere. And on some sites, it is inexcusable, especially the news and tech news sites. You should see some of the doozies I see on some of them. I won't name them here because this is not the place to do that.

Here we're supposed to have fun, so let's enjoy these games.

.........................Moderator comment.........................

Hi Bart, thank you for your reply. I do usually proof read, but there are days when I'm late and feel its more important to just get the review posted. todays actually had several mistakes, with respect to spelling and punctuation as well as undleted sections that were not applicable to todays game and some omissions as well. Hopefully I've sorted most of them :?: :)

I am playing this now. No problems installing. I am enjoying it. Thank you for it! :)

Do the developers want to know where there are spelling errors in the game?

So far, I have found three.

Two occurrence of the word "looses" when they meant "loses" (on the newspapers that announce that he lost his entire family), and in one of the hidden object scenes, in the list of things to find, there is one instance of the word "Jocker" when they meant "Joker" (the hidden item was a joker's face on the couch).

Also, in another hidden object scene, an item on the list was called "Paperclip", but the item you needed to click on was a binder clip, not a paperclip (there were two paperclips in the scene, but clicking on them did nothing. It wasn't until I clicked on the binder clip out of frustration and that was the ticket!)

There are a few things that you need to do that are not intuitive, and I had to use a hint. (For example: Needing to dig up the dirt in the front yard of the summer home was not obvious to me)

Other than those minor things, I am enjoying this and am grateful that they offered it for free this weekend! Thank you!

Game starts off well. Haven't encountered problems in display and original screen disposition comes back as before game.

Some games displace your desktop icons and resize the program windows. This one doesn't do that. That's a good point in its favour.

Lucky me, the game plays for me! Yea! Love these games!
Tip for every one having trouble playing these games lately on your newer systems:
Keep your old system when you upgrade to a newer computer; that way you'll have your old one to fall back on to install the games/apps that don't work on your newer one. That seems like a good idea to me anyhow... LOL :)

One last comment and I'm done. LOL
"TwoDesperados" is one of the companies that actually made the game. Not sure why they chose their company name for the folder name of this game?
http://twodesperados.com/
"Two Desperados Games"
There is a sequel coming out I noticed!

........................Moderator comment........................

Most developers of applications create a folder with the name of the developer or their company. Maybe Two Desperados tohught it would be cool to do the same. :)

I purchased the sequel via Steam I think it may have been it's Early Access initially, but is no longer at least via Steam. It was only released 3 days ago.. Just mentioned above that you can apply to beta test the second one if you are interested. see link above for the dev's home page.

Oh, and notes to White Rabbit:
The comments by Russ (8) and Mark Van (20) are correct. The game seems to actually be called "The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus", not, as it's listed here on the GGOTD, "The Drematorium of Dr. Magnus".

Also the game installs into a folder called "Two Desperados" instead of the games actual name. I searched Game GOTD and find no history of "Two Desperados" ever been given away so I don't believe it pulling it from the cache?...

.........................Moderator comment.......................

I meant to say earlier.... Two Desperados is actually the name of the Devlopers. I initially followed the spelling given by the Giveaway team, but changed as soon as it was pointed out to the correct spelling.

If you wish to check out the second one called The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus 2 the developers are asking for Beta Testers. you'll find the link on their home page:

I have the same problem with my mouse, it's all wonky and I know in some other games I just changed to type of pointer to the regular one, not a specialized one and the mouse worked ok. On this one, I can't even get into the options section or the play game section, the mouse just goes all over the place and I can't point it at anything. I'm using windows 10 on a desktop.

Anybody notice the cheat? At least, on my XP it's here:
C:\Program Files\TwoDesperados\GameWithCheats.exe
I would assume you start the game with that executable instead of the normal "game.exe" that the shortcut points to and opens.

Whiterabbit,

You say, "The installed game is 1.09GB in size."

I just installed the game from the Gametop site, as per your link, and the installed size is 323,466,014 bytes, which is about right for a HOG from 2012.

Just to make sure, I downloaded the second version of the game, and it occupies 301,626,069 bytes.

So I would like to ask you where the extra 700 megabytes come from. Especially since I've never seen a game file unfold to more than 2:1, seeing as the graphics are almost uncompressible.

Thank you.

............................Moderator comment.......................

Thanks for pointing that out Bart. Initially I wasn't going to post a review this morning. It was three or four hours into the giveaway when I decided I was, but becasue of time constraints I didn't bother to proof read it. I usually copy the previous weeks review, then delete all of the information related to the previous game, leaving behind the titles, and other repeatable content (such as the links to various game sites etc). This saves me a lot of time as I'm not a very fast typist, (I can't touch type). I just forgot to check the installed games size and delete the size of last weeks game. I also forgot to cghange the number of Steam game son sale and metion the free weekend game play. Will do so now. :) Thank you for your feedback.

Carefully read Whiterabbit's review and you will find a helpful clue if this game still won't work for you. (Get it elsewhere.)

This game was released in 2012. I am surprised it won't work on a win7 system, but that could be due to the loader.

I tried to install a 64-bit version of Firefox on my win7 64-bit system yesterday but my AV scrapped it. Still looking why it did that.

Whiterabbit,

You said, "Inconsistent in presentation and sloppy in the details, this is one adventure title that was definitely a preemie."

Do you know that there was an update to this game released about a month after the original release? For that matter, is it version 2 which is offered here?

Also of interest for those who read these comments, there is a second installment of this game. Most good games of this genre spawn sequels; this one did. If you're interested, you should search for it, because I don't think I should directly tell you where it is. The moderators might not like that, and I don't want to anger them.

........................Moderator comment................

Hi Bart, it really isn't a problem mentioning where to get other games from. Usually I'm the only moderator here and as far as i'm concerned, such information is of help to the community and welcom here. The only thing i ask is that if you want to post a link, make sure it leads to a safe site. Thank you. There is another person who occasionally moderates, but I've no idea who it is. They never leave feedback.

I've already mentioned where you can get the sequel The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus 2 as I purchased it a few days ago via Steam:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/393150/

You should also be able to get it from the developers site, which i've linked to elsewhere in these comments.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I suffer from severe Major Depressive Disorder (Depression). The games fall under a coping skill. They bring back my focus. It's amazing the usefulness of games. My therapists approved of the HOGs especially.

.........................Moderator Comment...................

Sorry to hear of your problems. My mother suffered from the same, unfortunately that was in the 1960, when they still though giving out mothers little helpers and electric shock treatment were the be-all and end-all for the treatment of psychiatric problems. I remember her going into hospital several tinmes to undergo EST, and she always came home diminished, so I can to a certain extent empathise with you.

I play virtually any genre to help distract me from the pain and also to help keep my brain active. I used to play a lot of HOG's when my children were small, especially the I Spy series. I still think they were amongst the better early HOG's available for PC. I tend to say I dislike them these days, but that's partly due to overkill on my part. I've got at least a few hundred of the things in my game collection, I just found them becoming a little tedious, also, my eyesight isn't what it was and HOG's tend to give me eye strain, so I usually avoid them these days. That said the last HOG I purchased was only three days ago. :)

That's the sort of game I like - download and isntallation without a problem on Win 10 (which I accidentally installed this week - and as everything works fine I won't change back to Win 8.1).

It's a bit slow but I didn't try the windowed mode.

Downloads as "Drematorium", wants to install as "Two Desperados" and is "Dreamatorium".

Huh?

.........................Moderator Comment...........................

I mention this problem in my review above. To cure thius problem you need to delete the giveaway cookies. Sometimes they become corrupted. I get this quite often; however I always change the install path as i have a specific folder on a different drive for giveaway games. Just change the install path to the correct name, or, if you've already installed it, you'll find the game folder within the Two Desperados folder, just cut and paste it to a different place.

Sigh, 2nd week where I get that 'failed to connect, try again later' message. I have already read the FAQ's and just as last week, I followed all the suggestions but none worked. I've been downloading games from this site for YEARS with a few hiccups (like, actually having to try again later and it worked). But I tried throughout the day last week with no success. I don't feel confident for this week either. I just went to Gametop and downloaded/installed from there and had no issues launching the game. So thanks for the link.
*Turns back on Anti-virus software, firewall, etc... and goes off to play the game!*

I really like this game. The graphics kind of lean toward me. It is a little strange. In the opening screen there is a small g instead of a capital G...just being picky. There are a few other picky things like the Ace is slightly interfering with the r in your. I won't go on.

I felt the tutorial could be more straight forward and done all at one time. That is the way I like it done. In the HO the Blueberry was among other blueberries, unless I saw this incorrectly. Some of the phrasing was confusing throughout the notes. I absolutely love the running mouse.

Overall I give this an eight out of ten. In scoring this, keep in mind I haven't made it out of the house yet. I'm completely stuck. I'm not a HMO Master as Stephen is. I haven't even made it to novice yet. With all that in mind, my comments are to be taken lightly. I'll keep trying to get out of the house. All I have let is a hammer handle which is of no use to me. lol

To Master Stephen, I am envious of you and hope to get to your level some day and thanks for the review. Thanks for the opportunity to be heard. Thanks Immanitas for another great game.

Thank you for your feedback. Re: being envious, don't be. The only reason I know a little about gaming and spend a lot of time gaming is due to a serious road traffic accident almost 10 years ago. I found playing games really helped with pain management. Prior to my accident I did play games but never as much and would never have considered writng about them or beta testing for developers. Now i have too many hours every day to play, so inevitably i know a little about gaming. it's such a vast subject I'm sure you'll find your niche.

I missed what game last Sunday? NOOOOOOOOOO! Banging head against the wall for daring to go out of town to visit relative on a holiday! NOOOOOOOOOO! Relatives! Who needs them? I MISSED A FISHDON GAME! Tears.

Installed fine on Win 8.1. Despite the pretty bad review (I understand not WR's, but reprinted from another site's review), I'm finding it entertaining, though I agree with some of the gripes. Not the best, and doesn't require much brain power so far, but so far fun and smooth. I'd definitely give it a better review than the original. As always, thanks for these HOG/puzzle/mystery games; they are my favorite!

Thanks for review and scoring system. At first glance of pics the static graphics didn't look all that awful and story seem intriguing plus the 74% positive voting. But dig into the review and it's a no go since agree with all the genre comments. I'll enjoy weekend with some other things. Maybe a better choice Sunday.

I like the Dreamatorium of Dr Magnus. There are some problems with the game mechanics and the translations into English, but I really enjoy the artwork, the music and the atmosphere. I don't need to have my hand held through games, and I don't mind being a little bit confused or mystified by an adventure game. Thanks very much to Immanitas, GGOTD and Two Desperados.

Incidentally the Gamezebo review republished here today is unfair to the point of being offensive. It would be far better not to publish a review at all if the only one that can be sourced is so malicious. After all, the game is being given away here for free.

Hi Julia, thank you for your comment. I did try and balance the Gamezebo review by posting a link to the Big fish community reviews, however I take your point re the bad review, maybe i should have just not bothered this week. I wasn't going to post a review at all, not having played the first in the series until after the game went live. i even posted a note to say I probably wouldn't be, but decided to once i'd played a little and found the Gamezebo review. i actually only skim read it so feel a little guilty now at having posted it. I will put a note at the beginning of the review to make the community aware of this.

I have Win 7 and it installed just fine. When open it did drag a bit as it was opening the game and showing the tutorial, but after a bit, it was much better. I played about 5 minutes. I enjoy these types of games. Looks to be very intriguing so far. It will give me some good play time. Thanks Inmanitas and GOTD for this game.

Is Steam a big deal if you just want to play alone and not do any socializing or network playing?

...................................Moderator comment............................

There's an excellent community over on Steam, with what i consider the best game client available anywhere. It allows you to connect to the Steam community, make friends or if you wish remain toitally incognito. The main reason i buy games via Steam is becasue of the excellent sales and the ability to automatically update a game when a patch is released. If I only had several games i'd not bother, but I have thousands of games on my Steam account, so practically auto updating was a must have.

Also its the only game client where you can actually earn money from playing games (hmmm, not totally true as Playfire has a scheme where you can also earn small amounts). A lot of games now have Steam trading cards. I sell these as soon as they become available on the Steam community market. I've made well over £1200 (approx $1800) since June 2014 selling the cards I've earned from playing my Steam games, plus other items such as Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Stike: Global offensive in-game drops; for example, when I purchased Counter Strike: Global operations I also purchased an in-game operation that cost me around £2. They periodically have these operations that include new maps, but you have to pay for them like a downloadable content. These passes can be sold on the community market unless they have been redeemed for the operations medal. As you play the game while the operation is live you can upgrade your medal from bronze to silver and gold. I never bothered redeeming my pass and now I can sell that pass for over £30 (approx $45). I still have passes for five different operations and the total value of those comes to around £80. A great way to fund a gaming habit for very little input. The longer you keep the passes the more they increase in value as new players buy up the passes becasue they want the mnedals. Crazy i know. some steam trading cards have sold for upwards of £50, though most go for pennies. It depends on how popular the games are. If its a game that gets a lot of negative votes there are fewer cards available, so they end up costing more to buy on the market.

Haha. Anyone else notice the title is Dreamatorium not Drematorium.

Just a quick note about Desura. They've filed for bankruptcy a few months back. They are also the owners of Indie Royale (game deals/bundles). I tried downloading a few DRM games I had left and none of the links work, so I think they've removed them from BOTH sites. I'm also having problems just logging into the old Desura account at this point. If you have any of these games, get your Steam keys while you can - the entire site may not me up for much longer. If a game doesn't have a Steam key, it seems a lot of devs are providing them for their Desura clients (with proof). I don't know if any are providing the DRM downloads.

Basically, at this point, grab whatever keys/proof of purchase you can as this seems to be coming to the final end.

Thankfully you can still download the Indie Royale drm free games, but I'm sure that will disappear once their server fees come up for renewal. I have over 1200 game son my Desura account, but most of them were gained via Indie Royale, I copied all of my unused Steam and other game keys back in June/July and have downloaded about 60% of the games before I went on vacation, but that still leaves around 400 games that I'll be losing. This is one of the problems with downloadable non drm free games. I've lost hundreds of games from other game distributors when they have gone bankrupt or have been bought put (eg Sandalot games and Reflexive arcade).

No doubt the owners of Desura and Indie Royale will set up sonewhere else under a different name and do the same sometime in the furture.

Addendum:

I've been downloading my collection of indie Royale drm free games via the indie Royale site for several hours now and have had few problems. Occasionally i'll get a red box saying the link is no longer available, but clicking on the download link one or two times more and I get the game downloading. :)

I've only just checked my Desura account and was able to download several games with no problems.

It is important to download as many of your drm free games as you can as soon as you can becasue both servers (for Desura and Indie Royale) will close sometime in the not too distant future.

There is a possiblilty that they have several servers that serve different areas of the world. Maybe the server where your games are stored has closed?
