Try updating your video drivers. Theres a choice of OpenGL and Direct X for the visuals. OpenGL is the default. You may not have OpenGL installed. You can get it free from the following address:

This is a nice, simple little turn-based rpg. Graphically, it's like a late 80's/early 90's game. It's best as a diversion - the stats and options available are very simple, but this is a nice change from the highly complicated games that have become the standard. There's some degree of poor translation, but nothing that was indecipherable so far as I saw. You can name your characters, and have a choice to start from. As you play, you gain npcs. One thing notable about the game is that it can be Windowed. Between that and the turn-based nature, this is a great game for me to play while waiting for web pages to load over my dial-up connection. There is also an option for creating one's own adventures to share with others.

#26 worked for me with Vista Ultimate. At first it crashed, but the prefs file setting fixed it.
I have a laptop, so I'm at the mercy of my manufacturer (Alienware) to release ATI video card updates, and they are SLOOOOWWWWW.

Too many RTS games these days are punched from the same cookie-cutter, Command and Conquer / Warcraft mold - you know, the same old real-time model first introduced in the mid 90s. As a result, most people have zero experience with any other kind of strategy game. So you get people asking 'why bother downloading this when you can download Command and Conquer'. Give a turn-based game a try, give anything different a try, and don't decry something because it doesn't look like other games out there. Personally, I find this game a little too simple in gameplay for my tastes, but at least its not another piece of Westwood Studios shlock.

I had no problems running this game using Vista Home Premium.

Judging from screenshots, the response this game has gotten on GGOTD and the response it's gotten on other gaming sites, I will give this one a pass. Looks like a good idea that didn't really come to fruition.

Gamewatcher: The game works under Vista well too, you must update your video driver (the game needs OpenGL) or edit a file common/preferences/prefs.cs and change
$pref::Video::displayDevice = "OpenGL";
to
$pref::Video::displayDevice = "D3D";

oh and I forgot.... you do have to create a character before playing... not hard really...

$pref::Audio::musicVolume = "0";
This eased my headache a lot

This game wasn't that bad. Definitely worth a download if you are into this genre. But what is the genre? First off it is not an RPG, it is a turn-based strategy game with some RPG elements in it.
For a free alternative turn-based strategy game, which in my opinion has better game play, check this out. I believe it is cross platform too!

Along with Breakout/ARkanoid type games, I am an RPG fan since before there were computers. I have Steve Jackson games, and a number of others that mentioning would get me even more branded. One of the reasons I installed Sega and Nintendo emulators was to play my old RPGs without having to depend on the old console boxes to keep working.
This is a fairly well polished, modernized version of those games, althoug a little retro looking (maybe on purpose?). If you like RPGs or never played them before, this is a decent enough game.
It does have that problem with the cursor not being constrained in multiple monitor set ups (which I find particularly odd with both Magic Balls 3 and Stryteg as both require a 3D video card to work, and aren't most of those multiple monitor cards?). But like the Magic Balls 3 offering from the other day, I will await the programmers fix while I keep the game, and just have to bear the annoyance of disabling one monitor to play the game.

If it turns out that this game actually DOES suck in terms of something designed poorly, bugs, etc. then that is one thing. But you kids in here with your "Teh grafix is teh scuk!11" nonsense and ripping the game for being turn-based(as if that were inferior to real time!?)...get a clue.
Real time sucks for strategy and graphics are largely irrelevant to whether a game is good or not.

Anyone have luck running this on Vista? The only comment I saw was from the last time, when someone gave a rather generic "it doesn't run so good" with no specifics.

I didn't get a chance to get to write in on yesterday's game - I LOVE MAGIC BALL 3. Any chance you'll repeat Magic Ball 1 & 2 (assuming they exist)?

Do you have a newer intel-based Mac? If so you can get "Parallels" and run Windows applications inside the Mac OS. ^_^ I have a G5 Mac and use VM Ware to run a virtual Windows XP machine and it runs smoothly (ironically it runs better than my 2.6Ghz P4 PC does by itself) enough to play most games in it (and you can full-screen mode VM Ware to allow you to see just the machine you're running at the moment if you want to). My machine is a single 2.0Ghz G5 CPU Mac with 1.0GB of RAM, so it's no "powerhouse." But those are some options for you. If you've got an Intel-CPU Mac check out this URL: http://www.apple.com/getamac/windows.html

Would again love to have Butterfly Escape. I loved this game but lost it to comp failure and had to have new hard drive etc. I had gone through the 15 levels and was in the next phase when my pc went down. The game played great and was no fault of the game my pc went down. Also Strike Ball 2 was another favorite and would love to have it again. I appreciate all you do to give us different games. Thanks a lot GGAOTD.

I'm with Comment #6 all the way. Hows about offering Stratego. Also more Tycoon Games, Sim Games, and Strategy Games and less of these Tetris type of Games that GAOTD has been offering the past couple of days would be EVEN better! Though I REALLY appreciate all the free programs and games that I did end up enjoying from GAOTD. Everyone has a different opinion on what is considered a GOOD game.

I downloaded the demo of this, Undercroft and Troll after Jets'n'Guns was offered, but found none of them very fun. Rake In Grass have obviously improved since those were created though, as they also have made Jets'n'Guns. I'm looking forward to whatever their next product might be. Withholding my thumb down because I haven't really explored this game much. Maybe it could improve throughout.

Hmmph. What an unimaginative name to go with a mediocre game. Re-arrange them and you get STRATEGY.

Hi there,
I was wondering why you don't also offer the Mac version of the game? I just checked and they do have a mac version but the version you can download here is windows only. Do you guys run a mac only site too?? I hate missing out just because I run a mac.
Thanks,
Sherry

If you want a good RTS, Command & Conquer is freeware nowadays, I would advice grabbing that.

I think this is an honest take on Homem like games. I never considered paying the full price for it, but I didn't mind buying it for 5$.
Considering how rare these kind of games are on this site, I'd say you should really download it and try for yourself. :)

Something funny is going on here. My posts are appearing then disappearing, or not appearing at all.
I understand if you moderate some of the comments but none of my comments use offensive language. And I truly believe my comments are reasonable....in fact much more reasonable and polite than many of the comments that DO appear. Also I make a true effort to stay on subject (with the possible exception of this one post because of continued frustration -excuse, please) which is more than I can say for many of the frequent posters. Their posts are not deleted.
This is not only for me but many other posters have been having the same problem.

By the way Mike, comment #3, Jets and Guns Gold is one of those space shooters that I personally think is well worth the asking price ;) I bought the earlier version then the Gold version when it was released. You can have my earlier version if you wish as all the levels are repeated in the Gold edition. Just check back over the last week at one of my comments and you'll find my Email. I can mail you the password; then I'll destroy my copy totally so as to make it legal. (seriously). I can't see any reason for keeping both games when someone else is obviously wanting the game.....okay you wont be getting the Gold version, but I'm sure it will appear here sometime in the future.... :) I love the little floating space suited men and the variety of enemies and junk you get in this particular game. It's definitely one of the superior ones.

This received glowing reports when it was given away back in February (was it so long ago); however, the only comment from then worth checking is game seekers comment #32……… follow the link to see that:

I have several role playing games that are much better than this (IMO), so will pass on today’s offering; but for those who have no RPG's this ‘will’ be a treat. Get it while the goings hot. If you've never played RPG's and find you really like it, then try one of the many boxed sets you can buy from the bargain bins such as Myst III: Exile or URU Ages beyond Myst, Wizardry 8 and earlier versions of Might and Magic such as IX that only cost me less than $10 each as you'll find the first/third person immersivness and the far superior graphics amazing compared to this giveaway, and, after today, you'll find them a lot cheaper as well. I've seen The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on offer for around $10 over the price this game usually costs, and used copies for the same price. For anyone who hasn't heard of ‘oblivion, well you haven't lived, ;) lol.
I give this 6 out of 10 for game play and rareness on the giveaway project :); I’m sure some would score it higher, but I’ve been playing my favourite r.p.g. recently and this just doesn’t compare. It's certainly worth downloading if you don't have any games of this genre though.
Thank you Rake In Grass and the game giveaway team for today’s offer. :D

I've seen worse...
But then again i've seen much better...
Its basically a really (really) cheap version of "Heroes of might and magic".
It's a cute game for ppl that like that sort of game... but im not sure even hard-core fans of the series would pay for this.
I mean... come on... a little animation wouldnt hurt... at least make the horse twitch when it moves :)

I dl'ed this one on its first offer, and found that it commits the cardinal sin of gaming ... it just isn't fun. It is far inferior to commerical offerings within the same genre.
