Installation:

The game downloads to a 220 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 241 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Stray Souls - A Dollhouse Story

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). The Game:

Stray Souls: Dollhouse Story is as much of a horror hidden object game as you’re likely to find. The game focuses on creating a chilling atmosphere and it mostly succeeds. The story here unfolds quickly through the unique Dollhouse mechanic, but you can finish the game in just as rapid a fashion, likely to be left wanting more.

Stray Souls follows a woman’s desperate attempt to save her husband’s life after an unknown villain abducts him. As the heroine, you must travel to a small, deserted town where your husband apparently grew up, unlocking both the secrets of his past and solving the mystery of the present – that being who took your husband, and if you’ll be able to save him before the villain can add another murder victim to his list.

You’ll be led through your journey by a rag doll of sorts, who appears after your husband’s disappearance. Your new friend knows more about your husband and his past than you could imagine, but he won’t give up the information without some assistance from you first.

The story itself plays out through two main portions – the main gameplay that sees you running into suspicious, even creepy characters as you try to free your husband, and the Dollhouse feature, which sees you collecting dolls throughout the environment, each one triggering your rag doll companion to reveal more of the story surrounding your husband’s past, a murderer, abandoned orphanage, and more.

Game play is a mix of hidden object scenes and light puzzles. As you find items on each scene’s list, you’ll receive items that can be taken with you and used elsewhere in the environment. Normally, you’ll have anywhere from two to five tasks that need to be completed in front of you, and the order in which you do so is mostly up to you. This isn’t to say that the gameplay is entire “free,” though, as you’ll only unlock new areas after passing through the linear story line.

As for the puzzles, there are the expected inclusions, like tile rotation puzzles, but you’ll also have unique puzzles, like one that has you manipulating a makeshift Rube Goldberg machine to unlock a door. The puzzles themselves may take some time to complete, but are mostly lacking in the way of challenge.

That being said, Stray Souls has a great flow to its gameplay. Even though you may have more than one task on your plate, you’ll likely always be able to figure out how to solve the next step in question, without getting stuck. The hidden object scenes themselves are easy to complete, thanks to the detailed graphics and proper object naming, and the game provides enough text hints while simply playing to give you an idea of where you need to go. For the most casual players, the game offers a large amount of enjoyment, but if you’re looking for more difficulty, you can have it as well by choosing to play on the more difficult setting, which slows down the hint recharge for hidden object scenes and removes the twinkling stars that show you where these scenes are in the environment.

Technically, Stray Souls excels in its atmosphere. Your travels through this dilapidated village are met with broken windows and crumbling staircases, giving off the real feeling that this is a place that time forgot. You’ll also be met with various cutscenes, which have horror movie elements to them, quickly flashing an image on screen accompanied by a shrill sound effect – it’s enough to give you the chills on more than one occasion, make no mistake.

For all of its good qualities however, Stray Souls does lack in length, being easily finished in less than two hours. The story has an anticlimactic ending, with a text paragraph laying out what happens to our heroine and the game’s other characters in the end after the final moments of actual gameplay. What’s more, while the story itself does have a noteworthy plot twist and enough details to be satisfactory, it just leaves the feeling that it could have been so much more if it was further fleshed out, and the same can be said for the entire game.

All told, it’s not that the game’s length makes Stray Souls unworthy – far from it actually. Stray Souls: Dollhouse Story is a highly enjoyable experience due to its high production values and balance of gameplay types; it’s just unfortunate that it doesn’t last longer than it does.

Conclusion:

Not played this long enough to give a conclusion. The initial stages of the game looked well made and relatively easy to complete.

As a player of TONS of HOG's, I think this game is wonderful. I especially like the way that some of the hidden objects are very small, and well hidden. That makes the game more challenging, and therefore longer. It is perhaps, a little silly to have to click on a key three or four times to get a door or drawer to open, but other than that, it's a great game and I am enjoying playing through it. Thanks !

It is not too difficult, and so I liked that very much. It runs fine on XP. The only perplexing part was what time to set on the Clown's clock-lock. I couldn't seem to find a clue for that, although running through the 0'clocks did solve it. My only problem was downloading it. I don't do social media. The last few times that I have tried downloading a game, and I select 'email me the download link', the link never arrives; not even in the spam folder. I get a copy from someone else who doesn't have that problem.

Nice game-thank you! Might be a bit too scary for younger children but nice graphics, really eerie music, and not too complicated to find items you need. I decided to play in easy mode as I just wanted to fill some down time. Bonus-morphing objects! Haven't finished yet but wanted to give a short comment before Christmas takes over completely. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

lovely game but too short as I finished it the same day I installed it which is unusual for me, just as I was getting into it I rescued the chap and it ended, shame really, - will play on "expert" next time to see if it lasts longer; but definitely a keeper

Stray Souls: A Dollhouse Story
We had this game before, and have to say it wasn't one we liked well, it has decent graphics and a storyline that is fairly enticing, but just didn't play as well as it could. Plus BIG disclosure; HOG are not among our favs. YMMV and if you're a fan of the genre you might like this one.

I completed the game and i immediately thought there should be an extras menu, where i could replay the dollhouse scenes. I would have loved to see the whole story in one go.

One of the reasons I cancelled my BFG subscription due to the plethora of HOG's. They seemed to be releasing one virtually every day a few years ago and I ended up with almost a years worth of credits (1 per month) as they were not releasing anything else other than HOG's.

It took some time to download, longest in a long while! Began easily and play is smooth. As with most of this type one activity follows another plus hidden objects etc. The story follows along easy and does make you want to find out what's next. I have other holiday things to do and stopped at finding Sam. Thanks for another great game and have a good holiday week!

Fun game. Had to exit to main menu after first install due to some graphix corruption along top of game pages. Then Ok. Nothing super special but flow along nicely and I like the help companion. Silly critter but different.
Kinda under time pressure myself so a 2 hour game, played over various periods is just right. Thanks.

Installation with virus scanner off went fine. It is a spooky game with a corresponding music theme. I play the game in expert mode with slower hints and no sparkling areas. The hidden object parts are very easy to solve, the puzzles not too difficult. Nevertheless it is an attractive game with a storyline which let me go on and on in the game.
Let the HOG part out and put more effort into the puzzles, you will have a very good game.

Hi ya'll I just need to say I have never had problems downloading anything from this site. I always disable my AVG for about 5 minutes while it is installing. You don't have to do it while it is down loading. Once it finishes its install turn the antivirus back on. It works so well. I love the games we get here. I do wish there would be less horror type games. I thank you for all the free games you give us. White Rabbit Steven, I love the time you put in to telling us about the games. Played through on Windows 10 without a hitch. This is a fun hog. Good story line (jumps right into it) and playability. Nice artwork. Not too long, not too short. Hope that I don't upset anyone, but due to the inability to open/close Face Book anymore, having to send my email address, having to disable my anti virus (I understand why GGAOTD uses the wrapper),... I've just found it much easier to download directly from MPC and uncheck the 3 items. As usual, thanks to the developers and hosters.

For some reason, the download attempts crashed a couple of times. I am sure that is on my end with the frigid weather impacting the central office of my DSL provider. On the third try it completed and then installed fine on a Win10 Home x 64 machine. Zemana AL has been seeing the setup.exe files as a problem so needs to be turned off for installation.

Spooky themes are my favorite and so far I am enjoying the game.
A few points:

Unlike most other games, the written story narration does not have a control for the user to move forward after they have read it. Here it is controlled by the program and moves very quickly on its own and you must try read it as such. I found that odd.

Graphics are a bit flat requiring me to get up close to the screen for the hidden object scenes. Bum eyes here so not the designer's fault but just thought it worth mentioning.

I love the doll!!! ;-)

I think it's great we are getting games from MyPlayCity.

My problem? I love hidden object games and have played every one on the site. Replayed this one within the past few weeks.

I purchased this game. It is very good with just the right amount of spookiness, which I like. There isn't anything in this game that I would suggest be changed. Great giveaway.

Installed on Win 7, 64 bit. No problems with download or installation. Played game for about 10 minutes. All seems to be working well. It is a little easy so far, but have only done 10 minutes. Thank you GOTD and MyPlayCity.

Downloaded and installed quickly and easily, if you don't include the bit about forgetting to plug in the external HD.

I've only had time to play through the first couple of scenes and, so far, the game seems quite easy, with hidden objects fairly clearly visible and no puzzles in those scenes. Using objects also, so far, seems intuitive and the map tells me which scenes still have something to do.

So not a challenging game, but one that's a nice way to spend some time in between doing all the other things that are needed at this time of year with people visiting for a few days.

I purchased this game back when it was first released and I remember really enjoying it. It successfully maintained a fairly creepy atmosphere and I don't recall ever being "stuck". I really hate it when I feel like I have to figure out what the game developer wants me to do. This was a game that had a lot of different small goals you needed to finish so that if you couldn't figure out how to do one, there was another you could pursue. As a game and story, it flowed well and overall I was satisfied with it, so much that I still have it on my computer as I thought I may play it again at some point.

I remember it being fairly short and was a little disappointed in that, but that may have been more of an issue with my perceived value for the price I paid. Sometimes short is better for games from a story/play point of view.

Overall, I remember this being a very well done game with no problems seeing items, boredom, or frustration. I also don't recall this being particularly challenging in the puzzle department. At the time I was happy with this as I had played a number of games that confused "challenging puzzles" with "ridiculous, impossible, illogical string of random actions passing itself off as a puzzle". As such, it may be "too easy" for some people.

I think it is well worth the download today. I enjoyed this game so much that I always intended to purchase the sequel when it came out but never got around to it with all the other things I needed to do. This was a nice reminder about this series so I may just do that over the holidays.

This doesn't look like the type of game that a family site should be giving away. If I allowed my children to play this game it would cause sleepless nights mixed with nightmares. You need to decide if you are a family site or an adult site. It's wrong to claim one thing and do another.

Ich habe Kaspersky deaktiviert, den Rechner neu gestartet und Überraschung: Die laut Kaspersky 100% sichere exe ließ sich installieren. Ein wirklich grandioses Virenprogramm, dass nicht mal fragt, ob man diese Datei wirklich installieren will, sondern das System glauben lässt, die Datei wäre fehlerhaft. Dank an den Moderator.

No problems during download.
No problems detected after doing scans with Windows10 Defender, SAS free 6.0.1230, MBAM free 2.2.1.1043, EEK free 12.0.0.6971, GSAM 3.0.67 (all definitions updated).
No problems during installation.
No problems also after doing scans post-installation (with the same tools).
No problems at game startup and when changing its options.

I'm using:
- Windows 10 home/standard x64, DEP always on.
- Custom scaling 150%.
- Resolution 1920x1080, color depth 32bit, refresh rate 60Hz.

How can i run bigfishgames under Win7 64 bit?
I have a GForce 210 with newest drivers, Directx 11, 16 GB Ram and get allways a black screen :(

The GForce 210 was never sold as a gaming card and is very under-powered with a memory clock speed of 0.5GHz. and gpu speed of 1.4GHz. Also, the GForce 210 card only supports direct X up to 10.1, so your problem is most likely trying to run the game using DX11. Download DX10 from Microsoft and see if that fixes the problem. What is the clock speed of the computers cpu? You require at least 1.8GHz for the game to run.

I have this friend who insists his used hard drive is just fine, explaining how top notch is computer specs are, but it takes him an hour to boot up and he can't run but one SLOW app at a time. He has some kind of SECTOR Marking/remapping of the memory segments program running constantly and and things just quit suddenly with nothing in the logs.

Meanwhile on my Production box which took more than a year to load and debug,
Win 7 64 bit, 2x Xeon X5355, 16 GB ram, Quadro FX 4600 bigfish works a champ. But Bigfish works on all my programmed windows XP, 7, 32 and 64 boxes.

This game works too. Not one BF game ever didn't work. It had to have some allow binary to execute rules written to run, but that's standard FireWa11 stuff here all in the FAQ's if you want to play.

I am going on two more years now of "PLAYING", since I almost died of heart attack. My only advice if you love this type of HOG/puzzle game today's giveaway is to Eat only non poisonous fist sized portions of the best nutritious food, and RO filter your drink, and treat people nice, to stay alive to Have another nice Christmas giveaway. stay away from commercial snacks and sodas for the best results.

If you check system requirements on BFG website, windows 7 is not included (by the way it should work, given that it officially works on windows 8 and probably it works even with 8.1 and 10, although I didn't installed it yet and tried myself).

Thomas Müller, I have been VERY pleased with my EVGA GTX 550 Ti graphics card with a GB of memory. Paid about $150 a few years ago, you should be able to find one for less than 100€, maybe even a used one. It's quiet, has a good frame rate on everything I play (I don't have any of the "AAA" games from the last 5 years, but love 3D games, still playing Silverfall a lot). It's on my 32-bit Vista machine but should work on newer PCs as well. There are lots of models ranging from $29 (for your 210) on up to many hundreds. I'm looking at Amazon in the US, pricing may be different in other places! If you don't need to play the latest 3D games, a 550 or 650 would be a big step up from a 210.
