Will not install on my win 10 so I have lost out on this free game I very much would have liked, Linda

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Linda

Sorry I didn't see your comment until after the giveaway ended. Had a vary late night following the New Years celebrations. It installed onto two of my Win 10 computers with no problems apart from being blocked initially by one of my security programs (Zemana Antimalware suite). The giveaway contains Themida code, which is often seen as a threat because it can also be used to hide malware. Also, there is some disabled adware in the games executable. All MPC games do open your browser to the MPC site when you first install the game and when you close the game down. The reason for this is that everytime you are directed to their home site they earn cash, part of which is given to the developer of the game you have installed. This is the way these free game sites are able to give away games for free. The browser opening is totally innocuous and does not install any malware on your computer. It is adware, but not malicious adware. You can still get the game directly from MyPlayCity if you wish. The game is exactly the same as the one given away except the initial installation process has been partially disabled, i.e. what you see in a game being installed directly from MPC is three check boxes in the installation screen. #those need to be unchecked and then everything is virtually the same as the giveaway. The only other difference is that the game is installed into the C drives program folder, whereas the giveaway version gives you the opportunity to install to other drives or other folders on your c drive.

I will wish you all a Happy New Year just in case I don't make it tomorrow morning. As my wife's family are Scottish, we celebrate hogmanay in a big way. I don't usually drink alcohol, but New Years Eve I do make an exception. That combined with the opiate medication I have to take usually leaves me rather incapacitated the following morning, so I may not make the start of Sundays game giveaway.

I wish you all a fantastic and fruitful day and wish you all a brilliant New Year. If you have time to post a comment it is appreciated. Unfortunately I won't be able to moderate for much of the day. We traditionally have family over all New Years Eve to celebrate Hogmanay. I will moderate any comments whenever I get a few spare moments. If you have time to post a comment today it is appreciated, but as it's New Years Eve, I presume most of you will be visiting family, or celebrating in other ways. Have a fantastic last day of 2016. I hope the New Year brings joy, happiness and success to all who visit here :)
Thank you to all who took the time to post feedback about last weeks games, and I hope you all received something special for Christmas, I did. :)

Please only post comments about the game being given away today; other comments either not appropriate, or not about the game may be deleted; however a little light banter among community members and with the moderator to keep this a friendly place to visit will be allowed, and will be judged by the moderator as to whether it is suitable or not to be left.
I am posting this in light of the massive increase in negative comments, inappropriate comments and spam that have occurred over the past several months since the site was updated and in particular since the site started to give away games from the Steam world. I truly believe that if we get lots of decent feedback about the games we get here, more developers will be happy to give away their games. Seeing lots of complaints instead of feedback about the game will not persuade developers to give their games away for free. So please bear this in mind when posting your comments. Negative feedback about the games given away is always welcomed as that can also be very constructive for developers, however, complaining about the way the site is operating or problems about downloading or installing the games should be directed to the giveawayoftheday contact form which I've linked to HERE, alternatively, if the problem is game related and it is late in the day (I can't moderate 24 hours a day), please also post your issue in the forums where you may get a response from the community. Often, such problems are related to your computers set up. i.e. your security may block the installation (for example quite a few game giveaways I've installed have been blocked by my copy of Zemana Anti-malware suite) Also please read the moderation policy which can be found HERE and if you do have a problem please check the FAQ's thread HERE. Thank you.

Suggestions:

Whether you like or dislike Stones of Rome please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE

Installation:

The game downloads to a 54.1 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:

Introduction:

Collect all the pieces of the map to help James find a way back from the catacombs in the breathtaking game Stones of Rome! A curious explorer decided to investigate the mysterious secret place inside the Rome catacombs thoroughly while his group has accidentally left him behind and finished the excursion. The boy was left alone in the dark dungeon lit only with a dim light of torches. At first, it seems like he’s on his own special adventure, but then he realizes that he’s lost. What will you do if you get lost in the strange catacombs in Rome? Most of us will be easily terrified and start running aimlessly in the catacombs. The only thing that you need is a map with a route back, so let’s find it to return back! But where is the map? In the game Stones of Rome a cunning monkey has stolen the map from the boy’s bag and torn it into small pieces. You have nothing to do but to find all the pieces of a map and match them together. It’s time to solve all the puzzles and collect all the pieces of the map to get the whole map. Don’t waste time — help James cope with all the challenging levels and find the way to the surface until it’s not too late. There is a few fresh air in the catacombs, so do your best to cope with this task as quick as you can! The rules of the game are easy enough —just be attentive and you’ll be a success. You are to puzzle your way through more than 30 levels full of amazing logic games and complete all of them to get all the fragments of the helpful map. Create a row of at least 3 identically colored tiles — you can do it both vertically and horizontally, whatever you want. Each time you complete the level, you earn a piece of a map. So your main aim is to get the whole map, as you have already guessed. At first, you have the tiles of 2 colors on the game board, but later on you’ll get tiles of 3 colors and even more to remove from the game board. Try to cope with the levels lightning fast to get time bonus, or use hints if you are stuck. Boost your logic skills to get the entire map and help James get from the dangerous catacombs in the game Stones of Rome!

The Game:

This is another take on Match three games and is very similar to a previous giveaway called Brickshooter Egypt which we've been given several times over the last 10 years. You can see a previous giveaway HERE

The game is played by sliding blocks from the side of the playing arena to a group of blocks in the middle, with the aim of clearing the central arena. To complete the first level you must create a row of at least three identical tiles. You can create rows either horizontally or vertically. Each time you complete a level you will earn a new piece of the map that James requires to find the exit. A level is completed once you've cleared all the tiles on the playing field.

The game starts off very easy with only a couple of different colors of blocks for the first few levels and only a few in the central area, however, as you progress more colors are introduced and the central area becomes bigger. Apart from the first set of ten levels a new color is introduced every ten levels till you reach a maximum of eight colors from level 50 onwards. As more colored blocks are introduced the game becomes much more challenging You are awarded points based on how many blocks you removed from the arena, it’s not based on the time it takes or the number of matches you made.

Stones of Rome differs from Brickshooter Egypt in that there is no hint or back button, so, once you've made a move it cannot be undone. If you liked Brickshooter Egypt and also like challenging puzzle games, this is definitely one to download.

Stones of rome starts of easy, but once more colored bricks are introduced it gets much more challenging very quickly. If you want a challenging puzzle game with a different match three element to it, Stones of Rome is definitely worth downloading.

Hi,
It downloaded easy and opened quickly. The graphics are very good and play is smooth. I started and thought this
is different and thought would enjoy more, but it became repetitious quickly! Perhaps something more than piling on bricks to have them disappear or special extras. It needs something interesting, but I am still in the early stages working on the map. The new year approaches, so can't continue right now. Thanks for a very good game again!
Happy New Year! Lee

Happy New Year, WhiteRabbit. I know it's probably too late for you to comment now so it's not a problem if you don't answer my question. Maybe someone else will.

I usually don't D/L a game until late in the day. Then I might not have time to play it at all or will play only a few levels, which means I won't know enough about gameplay to comment the first day. Often I want to comment days or weeks later, but don't know if the developer will see my comment. Do they see comments that are posted later?

Thanks, WR and GGOTD for this and many other good games I've D/Led over the years. And thanks to MyPlayCity for the many games they've given away this year.

For at least 3-4 years I've played only match 3 games, but when Clutter came along I was hooked. After not being able to play HOGs for several years because of poor vision, I was able to play Clutter and have loved it because of its uniqueness. Since it was given away in July, I have played it almost every day. This (and previous games given away here) relieves stress for me. I rarely get tired of it, but if I stop playing Clutter for a few days I begin to miss it and keep going back to it.

Before that, Call of the Ages was the game I was hooked on for many months. And before that were other Match 3 games. Maybe Stones of Rome will be a game that gets me away from Clutter.

I hope you have a great New Year, White Rabbit. Thank you for all that you do. I have an annual policy of becoming a lush every New Year's Eve and then making my New Year's Resolution to be (mostly) sober for the remainder of the year. It's been working out pretty well and I can honestly say I keep my annual resolution to be a better person.

Very pretty game and seems well-made.

It has a major flaw in my opinion: there's no real explanation of how it works.

I understand making a match of three identical tiles. What I don't understand
at all is why -- sometimes -- other tiles are destroyed along with the three.
Not understanding how the game works makes it an exercise in frustration. Just
waiting for a random number generator to give the needed tiles in the right
configuration makes the game too tedious to enjoy at all.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Frustrated

I think those blocks that disappear when you destroy matches are those that are not supported once the match has been destroyed. . I was going to mention this in my review, but because I have family around all day celebrating the New year, didn't have time to add that. Actually I found it hard to explain, but I think I do understand why it is happening. i.e. if the block isn't supported by one of the blocks that were present at the start of the game and if left would be apart from those, they are instead destroyed.

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. Yes, could have used a slider for music but kb has a control button so no biggie. Change from HOG & typical Match 3. It's like one from years back with the sliding blocks but so far (into green cells now) the play balance has been decent. Kinda rem old one being way hard at higher levels. Here planning ahead is key and easy enough to win a set. Random selections can/will end you up in dead ends.
Haven't gotten any Time Bonus, always shows a countdown and then prints 0 value. Don't seem to be able to replay a level either to try for higher score or maybe a TB. No matter since fun is getting on to fresh field.
Thanks for keeper & comments. 8.5/10 fans. Happy New Year one & all. Here's to more play fun.

Very disappointed to see that the setup module is loaded with malware. Be careful.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

There is no malware loaded with this game. The giveaway team have been giving away games for over 10 years and there has never been a game infected with malware. What you are probably seeing is the Themida wrapper which is often tagged as malware, but only becasue it can be used to hide malware as well, but in this cas eit is used to protect the executable from hackers.

Others have already noted what I was going to say but I'll add anyway.
Very similar to Brick Shooter, which I love. Nice updated graphics from Brick Shooter.

It does NOT have an undo option. This is going to make the game very difficult win. If I am playing a game that I have to restart a level over 10 times and cannot beat then I stop playing the game. It's an exercise in frustration at that point and I play for fun not a sense of defeat. To that end I wish games like these had difficulty options.

It also does not have a system cursor option. Just a nit pick because I like to use system cursors but it doesn't take away from the game.

I'm enjoying the game immensely at the moment.

What is "Weiter"? It shows up when the instructions are displayed, I assume to change to the next page. And why can't I adjust the volume of music and sound instead of turn both off or both on, period? I also noticed that it created two copies of my profile and won't allow me to delete either one. And the instructions say three in a row, horizontal or vertical. It doesn't tell me that ANY three together, line or "L" shape, will work. My connection took half an hour to download, but that's not the program, that's my connection. Otherwise a kind of enjoyable game.

No problems downloading, installing or running on Win7Pro.

I really like this game, grabbed my attention, music is soothing played low volume, game board is easy on the eyes; definitely a keeper for me.

Happy New Year everyone, hopefully it will be better than the one we are leaving behind!

Have fun at your Hogmanay Stephen, stay safe.

If I wasn't a huge fan of Brickshooter, I would probably really like this, but all I can see when I play this is what Brickshooter has and this one doesn't. Brickshooter was really obvious about which stones you needed to eliminate in order to finish the level. I liked having arrows on all the bricks so I could plan a strategy to have chain reactions. I liked how the extra bricks slid to the opposite side after making a match (not sure I can explain this. Let's say that you have a vertical row that, from the top has red, green, green. If you shoot a green one from the side, that makes a match of 3 greens and then the red will slide down as far as it can go - either hitting another brick, or becoming the next brick you can shoot from the bottom of that row). With this one, I'm never sure whether bricks are going to slide or explode. It seems more luck-based than strategy.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Thank you for your feedback Barbara, I much prefer Brickshooter. The only think going for this apart from the similar game play is the color purple. It really needed a back button and maybe a help button. :)

Reply   |   Comment by barbara  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

barbara , I agree with your points made. The exception is that the player DOES know which stones need to be eliminated in this game. You need to clear all of the stones, which is different from Brickshooter. It took me a bit of playing to alter my normal Brickshooter strategy, but I think you will get accustomed to the minor differences.

Agree, this is very similar to Brickshooter Egypt, which I have played hundreds of times over the years. Also similar to Tiki Boom-Boom, although somewhat less so. Stones of Rome has a few additional benefits as the player progresses, such as extra points for "glowing" stones; barricades which are immovable; and I'm sure there will be more as I get further along (I'm on level 25 right now). Great game! I know I'll be playing this many times as an alternative to Brickshooter Egypt. Many thanks to GGOTD, MPC, and all who work to make quality games available to the public. I had no problems downloading nor installing this game. A few additional icons added to desktop, no big deal. Music and sound effects are pleasant. Five thumbs up from me.

Roger, P.S. - I forgot to add that there is no "undo" option, unlike Brickshooter Egypt, so the player may want to keep that in mind. I have a feeling I may wish there was one during the later, most difficult levels. We'll see.

Thank you for telling us that you are going to be too drunk to perform your duties tomorrow morning. Don't drive that way and cause an accident. If you need help with your problem there are lots of places in England that can help you deal with alcohol abuse.

It's a whole lot easier now to download these games directly from My Play City or Game Top, and you can get them from there anytime you want. You don't have to have Facebook. You don't have to have Twitter. You don't have to have Steam.

I like Match 3 games. I like play choices; I prefer finding groups to sliding pieces. I also like to rotate the board and to have quick access to reshuffle and power ups. The adding of colors in this one pikes my interest, however.

I'm going to try this one from Game Top. I trust them.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Thanks for your friendly advise Steve. As I'm at home there's no danger of driving while under the influence. That said, i'm not allowed to drive anyway becasue the opiate meds I have to take preclude driving totally. This is about the only time I ever drink anything stronger than a glass of wine and only to be sociable. I still have bottles of spirits I purchased 20 years ago via duty free simply becasue I've never been a drinker. (probably thanks to my father who used to give me and my brother beer at Christmas and my grandmother used to put whiskey in my tea when I was ill. I always hated the taste.

Downloaded quickly and installed without any problems - Win10.

I've played the first dozen levels which start very easy but quickly get quite challenging and need a fair bit of forward planning.

It would be nice to be able to regulate the sound rather than having it either on or off, but that's a fairly trivial criticism for a game that will certainly be a keeper.

Thanks GGOTD and MPC.

Thanks, MyPlyCity. I like the match 3 games and this one different is unique. Started out very interesting but the difficulty increases rapidly. I really like it because it requires some strategy also.
