This game isn`t even close to Astromenous.I can`t stand that you don`t keep the weapons.I could make this into a way better game if I was the Creator. It needs to save all weapons and give you the choice to pick the one you want to use and needs more power-ups for the weapons.Since it is free it will be OK I guess. Thanks for a space shooter any-way.

Downloaded and installed without a problem. The problem came when I played it. VERY disappointing gameplay and graphics. Instead of transporting me to my youth, it just made me feel old and grumpy. Thanks as always GOTD - I guess we'll just have to wait another week.

Who is "some company"? What is the url for the website of this game's developer?

I personally like being able to go to the developer's sites and check out their software more thoroughly, also with some progs, there will be helpful FAQs or other info on the site.

Interesting too, to note that this developer's page on GGAOTD only shows two games, both having received many more thumbs down than thumbs up.

Not too shabby, I still have other arkanoid type games I like better than this one. however it is worth a play or two. Waiting patiently for Magic Farm to make it's way back.

Been visiting this site daily for years. Ever since the games went to weekends only the giveaways have all been "repeats or deletes". Guess I'm visiting today out of habit, but habits can be broken. I can only hope that the situation gets better. I do thank the G.G.O.T.D and G.A.O.T.D team for the past but am hoping for a better future.

It does remind me of the early days of video gaming too, as some have stated, but I don't consider that a flaw automatically. The game play is not terrible (nothing stellar - it is adequate) as some have said, but it won't knock your socks of either. The graphics are actually pretty good for this kind of game, but again don't expect the game to win any "Best Graphics" awards. The sound... I can't really say much about this, it's typical scrolling-shooter video game sound, a little more advanced and cleaner sounding than the old Galaga, Raiden, et al of the old arcade fame - it's simply the newer generation of the genre.

All in all the game was entertaining in the same way those classic games were back in the day. If nothing else you can enjoy the sense of nostalgia that comes with playing an obvious clone of a classic arcade/video game model. Maybe then you can run over to the MAME (Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator) site and pick up the emulator to play some of those old arcade games themselves - it's wholly worth it IMO.

download 23 seconds
activation 6 seconds
unzip and install 23 seconds
Play first level 3 minutes.
It seems when you hit an enemy ship, you can't fire again until the ship is done exploding which gives the other ships time to get you.
uninstall about 14 seconds.
thats 4 minutes of my life that I lost.
I'm sure some will like it
just wasn't for me.

Thanks for the review Cali, that’s saved me a couple of hours writing one up. On the question of consoles v PC I agree with you wholeheartedly. The only console that will see the light of day in my home is the Wii. :) (unless I bow down to the pressure I’ll no doubt get from my kids when they are a little older, lol)

The only thing I can add to today’s comments is get over to the forums and check out the following thread, that is if you haven’t already, because it’s packed with freeware, abandonware, online games and other stuff all to do with space shooters. Some of the titles I would recommend:

Forbidden Galaxy, Galaxy Strike, Star Rage, Star Shooter, Galaxy Invader, Alien Wars, Deadly Stars, (all commercial games that are free from Gametop), the abandonware title Universal Combat, which until January of this year was a commercial CD copy game and a couple of freeware alternatives such as Realms, Fraxy and Orbiter.

The game reminds me a lot of Astro Avenger, though Astr Avenger was only released in 2007, so is an obvious copy of this game.

It is slow, and very dated, but still playable in my opinion so give it a reasonable 6 out of 10.

i think this is the right game review is from 1996.

Even though I've always been a real champion of PC games, loquaciously proclaiming their superiority over games designed for console systems, I've always been ready to admit that some types of games are just better on consoles. Fighting games? Consoles rule. Platform games? It's getting closer, but consoles still have the edge. But when it comes to flying, nothing matches a PC - and if you want proof, just load up Star Fighter, a PC translation of a game obviously designed for the 3DO system.

The storyline in Star Fighter is hackneyed, but that's not a unique gripe when it comes to flyin'-and-shootin' games: As a pilot for the "Federation" (God, don't you just love the Federation!), you fly from planet to planet and basically shoot everything in sight. Just about any object - be it animal, vegetable, or mineral - yields up "energy crystals" when destroyed, and you earn various power-ups by grabbing certain colored crystals; there are also parachute drops you can snatch that upgrade your ship in various ways. (Unfortunately, reaching a parachute before it hits the ground is a dubious proposition at best, thanks to one of the most user-unfriendly navigational maps ever created for a simple arcade-style game.) It seems kind of anachronistic to have to grab parachutes in mid-air to replenish a spaceship that can fly in the atmosphere or outer space, but that's the least of Star Fighter's problems.

And believe me, Star Fighter has plenty of problems - the biggest being the way it looks and flies. The graphics are big and blocky, especially when you get close to an object; swoop near the ground or water and you can see the terrain warp and bend in ways that might earn accolades in an art film, but only shatter your sense of disbelief in a computer game. With no throttle per se - you either fly at minimum speed, top speed, or coast in between - trying to line up a target can be maddening. Guided missiles, whether air-to-air or air-to-ground, can only be locked on to a target by pointing the ship directly at them - now there's something you'd expect from technology in the distant future, eh? And even though I tried three different controllers - CH F-16 Combat Stick, Microsoft Sidewinder 3-D Pro, and Gravis Gamepad - the ship still handled like a winged cow.

Because there's no HUD to speak of, you're forced to switch constantly between the cockpit view, a strategic map, and a ship status screen, slowing gameplay to a crawl. And even if you don't switch to the map, the pace of the game still feels slow. If you've just come off the adrenaline rush of a game of Magic Carpet II, Fury3, or Hellbender, you'll feel like you've entered the Geritol Zone when you climb in the cockpit of Star Fighter. This game just isn't fast enough to satisfy a real (or aspiring) action-hound, and I'm not talking about frame rate, either (though that drops into single digits even on a high-end machine whenever there's an explosion of multicolored polygons signifying the destruction of a target).

Thankfully, we now live in an age where you can try out a game to see if the writer who panned it was right or not - or, more appropriately, to see whether or not you agree with his or her tastes. Go ahead, try the demo for Star Fighter - but once you've banished it from your system, don't blame me for the time you spent downloading it, or for the hard drive space that was fragmented during its short and unwelcome stay.

Not wanting my comment deleted again, I will say this: This game is not the best. It is the exact opposite of the best. This would have been okay on GOTD back in the 80s. Maybe.

Very simple game but fun ....the graphics are ok....playability is ok......kind of challenging at times....its fun for a few plays but will not last long on you hard drive....installation is strange....just copies the game files to a folder ...no options......i would give it a 4 out of 10... worth a play or 2 but not a keeper..
