A great shoot'em up that was a fun one in the series. Yes a bit dated now but since I lost this on old hard drives it was good fun to go back and revisit. Please do more like this!

Heya Wabbit,
The hubby likes shmups so I got this one. Thanks for the suggestion about the 4th one. Will get it too.
It's nice to see "different types" of games being offered. Thanks GGOTD!
Great review, Wabbit. Hugs to you and your family.

Whiterabbit, I can't help but wonder if it's got something to do with the Win 8.1 update, which I have refused to install on my computer. I still have the original Win 8 that came on my laptop 2 years ago.

Zemana sometimes blocks these installations. If you have Zemana Antilogger installed, check Management Console -> Rules -> Star Defender 2 Setup. Scroll to the last entry. If it is blocked, right click and change it to Allowed. That's what I had to do. Then, I re-ran the install setup.exe file. It works fine after that. I hope this helps you.

Workin fast on Linux 64 bit. Ok on Vista 32 bit, but a bit slow. Obviously the game itself is fine.
The Star Defender boss battles are epic. Thanks.

Got addicted to all the Awem shooters that were given away in 2011 on my Vista machine. Now good to have this one to download on my 7 machine. Know it works because decided to download the Gametop version a few weeks ago. Back to being addicted. Will dump that one for this if all works okay, because have a basic problem with Gametop. It needs to run as an Administrator, probably so it can open a browser and connect to the site when it's done, so u can report your scores (and they can try to sell you things). To the best of my limited knowledge, this shouldn't be necessary. Though having the game find that browser in your limited account requires more precise coding, if memory serves, it can be done. Practically no game should require me to run it with Administrator privileges, and GOTD downloads don't. If anything is going to defeat one of my safety precautions, it's going to be by my choice. Though, having said that, I'm sure Gametop's downloads are completely safe. But, I'll start with games I can get from sources that don't require me to do that. Like GOTD.
TY GOTD for this one.

On my system the install gave me the option to create a start menu group or add to an existing group, also the option for a desktop icon.

I'll never know. Sad.

Just to inform. This game has been given here before on Jan 29,2011.
Someone above already mentioned that Star Defender 3 was given here to on Aug 13th of that same year.

Ok Windows 8.1.2 x64 Pro. No mouse issues w/ MS Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 7000 which is terrific one for large hands also the keyboards are great. Fun shooter. First level helps to have some extra missiles for Boss.
Pop couple into his claws & beware his center laser killer. Otherwise have to hang in each far corner & knock of the claw slowly as Boss cycles. Be ready for the extra bonuses RIGHT after killing him since they drop from low screen area pretty fast. Grab those.
In first level l loved the feeling when first get a rapid firing goodie! Doesn't last long nor does the 2X bonus but probably can buy some of that later by grabbing all the $ goodies during combat.
Prob won't play all that much being Spring at last and these things can get pretty dizzy at times but thanks. Can't believe haven't tried this series. Got the 3 & 4 as mentioned. Thanks GOTD.

This is a very fun game. A lot like Galaga which I used to love to play in the arcades. I like being able to choose the difficulty. I found it too easy at first. Even has a kid's mode so it will good for the little ones as well. Downloaded and installed with no problems on Windows 8. No mouse problems. I just have a regular Logitech wireless mouse. I don't have any complaints about this game. Thanks to the developer and GGOTD. I know where most of my weekend will be spent. LOL

Haven't played for long time, but still a good game! Strange white rabbit doesn't list gotd for downloading Star Defender 2 in year 01/28/2011 and Star Defender 3 in year 08/13/2011 using free software for downloading software from the past using software that was given away two weeks ago on gotd!
Would be also great if gotd sponsered a sweepstakes once in awhile! Possible trip to great Britian and living in a tent on white rabbit's lawn for a week! Thanks gotd....

No problems on W7 Home Premium 64 bit. A basic Shmup. With all the other games of this genre out there, I won't be keeping this one because you only have horizontal movement and no verticle. This is on par with Galaxians and Galaga as someone mentioned in a previous comment. If you don't have a Shmup or like collecting them, grab it up to keep until you get a better one.

This is a rather cool, old school, retro style, vertical scrolling space shooter. I like it, nice offering! Only covet I have, I'd like to see resolution options in the future. Otherwise, the game runs just fine on my windows 8.1 desktop with no problem, errors or lag.

Works fine on my win 7 laptop with blue-tooth mouse. The game did seem to lag or run in slow motion for a few seconds a couple times in the 4 games I played (died in lvl 7 twice, once in 9 and once in 10,I almost had him!) the lag wasn't bad enough to cause a problem in game play,in fact it may have helped a little. It would be nice to have a help file explaining all the power-ups. I tried to collect all of them but I don't know what the star or various coins do.
Overall, a fun & addictive easy to play game. Bet you can't play just once!

Pretty basic, won't be playing it anymore. I like the chiptune, at least for the short duration I tried the game. Reminds me slightly of the tune in Escape from Colditz.
I dislike that weapon levels 6 and 7 have way less damage output than level 5 AND less spread, and that several stages have pointless small groups of enemies arriving long after you have dispatched the main force. Reinforcements are fine, but they should be arriving either in force, or while you're still fighting a significant number of enemies already.
The game crashes when closing the lid on the laptop.

Not a bad little game; a little slow to start off, but I assume it'll speed up in later levels (or seem to, at least...).
With these kinds of games, I'm never sure if I like the fact that you can simply hold the fire button down without running out of ammo - I'd like to see something where even your base gun runs into issues if you do...
I'm currently on a Lenove T61 ThinkPad, running 64-bit Windows Pro 7 and the game accepts my mouse movements just fine.

Installed and activated with no problems on a Win 8 64 bit machine.
Fun little shmup, with a bit of a resemblance to a combination of Space Invaders and Galaxian/Galaga.
I had none of the mouse control issues Whiterabbit experienced, so it's probably just his mouse. I have a Logitech M510 wireless optical mouse.

A nice game. Unfortunately there is an actual install routine. No problem, I just turned on my Tool Wiz Time Freeze and installed it. Then I copied the folder to my memory stick. It's a fun game and definitely worth the effort to install. It's not a game I would play for hours at a time but great for some quick fun. Thank you GGOTD team, the moderator, and Immanitas Entertainment.
This site still suffers from the "unable to connect. please try again" error on my XP desktop. I had to use my Win 8.1 lap top. It would be nice if this could be corrected. I used o install games all the time with no trouble. I have made no changes to my computer. It has remained the same as when I was able to install games. Add to that to the fact that others also suffer from this same fate that points not at our computers but at the files and the way they are put together that is the cause of the problem. I have seen both XP and 8.1 users have the trouble so it does not appear to be the OS. I have read the FAQ and no suggestions have helped.

Yes, it´s "old-fashioned" - but I like it. It remembers me when we were much, much younger and played such kind of games on coin-machines in smoky locals or later on the "Atari/VC64-time" at home...

When I installed this game it displayed a page saying it was by Awem. Indeed, it was given away in 2011 under the Awem label. The version number is the same so I don't think there has been any change. However, it is a good game for venting pressure (unless you get killed off easily in which case it just adds to it ....
I do find the graphics a bit samey but it is still quite playable.

Excellent old-fashioned arcade shooter. Good graphics, good sound, but it only accepts keyboard or mouse input, no joystick option (haven't tried joy-to-key or such, maybe that will work). Quite addictive; my "few minutes to try it out" went 45 minutes ...til I was killed by the level 14 boss. (BTW, the graphics, sound, and actions are very similar to Insectoid, a vertical scrolling shooter which also doesn't accept joystick control.) Definitely a keeper.
Runs smooth as butter on my ancient Vista 32 system.

Star Defender 2
In Brief:
A spce shoot em up, commonly referred to as a shmup.
Installation:
The zip file once downloaded should be 11.5 Mb in size and when installed to the default path mentioned below is 19.5 Mb. Installation is a breeze; the unzipped setup file installs the game to the following path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Defender 2
Once installed you can delete the wrapped setup file (for those that are new to the giveaway project that's the orange colored file with a key symbol on the icon; you can also delete the Setup.gcd security file and the read me document.
There is a desktop icon created during installation so you will have to create your own via the above path or via which ever path you chose for yourself. If you also want a start menu shortcut you will have to go into Documents and Settings which is found in the root directory (C:\).
i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\name\Start Menu\Programs\ (XP) or C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ (Win 7 & 8 and Vista)
where 'name' equals administrator, or whatever name you use for your account. Just create a new folder within the program folder and add a shortcut from the games executable file. (right click and select create shortcut then copy that to the folder you've just created - you can also use the same shortcut and copy it to the desktop or select send to desktop {create shortcut}).
There is a music folder inside the main game folder, but I'm not sure if its possible to change the files for ones you prefer. The format is .mo3so, if you find the music irritating, you could change it to soemthing more to your liking. You will need to remane each
Star Defender 2 should work on all iterations of Windows, though from my own findings, mouse movement may be affected on newer computers due to the games age. It maybe the way i have my computers set up. I've not had this problem with other games. ;-)
Introduction:
Reference: accessed HERE 24th April 2015
You can get Star Defender 2 HERE. You can also get tStar Defender 3 and Star Defender 4 from MyPlayCity. Star Defender 4 was my favorite from this series.
The Game:
I've been playing Star Defender 2 on and off for years, purchasing it via Reflexive Arcade around 10 years ago (it was released back in 2005). It's still, together with the rest of the Star Defender series, one of the better vertical shmups despite its age. Sadly the ship only moves along the bottom of the game screen. However on the two computers I tested it on I now have problems controlling the ship, possibly due to its age. Basically my mouse movements are really sporadic, swapping between being too sensitive and hardly moving at all. I have decent Razer mice connected to both computers (Razer Naga & Lachesis) that allow me to change the sensitivity on the fly. Even when setting my mouse sensitivity to the lowest setting I find it hard to control the mouse movements. I found myself running into enemy fire simply because I overshot where I wanted to be, or it felt like I was moving around in molasses for a second or two. I do hope that this isn't a global problem due to its age when trying to play it on newer more advanced computer than it was originally developed for because it was always one of my favorite shmups.
I used to be able to get through the first few stages of this game with ease. After several attempts I could only manage level seven in the first stage of which there are nine stages in all, i.e. The First Battle, Den of the Spider, Mortal Dance, Deserted Star and Final countdown to name just a few of the stages.
There are hundreds of shmups available, some free some commercial. For several years after Star Defender 4 was released I didn't see many shmups released, but over the last year there has been an explosion of releases, so if you like this genre, you'll find loads of them about (some of my favorites are the Japanese shmups such as the Exceed series (e.g. Exceed: Gun Bullet Children) or Hitogata Happa (an anime style shmup). They aren't as prolific as match threes, TM's or HOG's but are still pretty commonplace now.
I posted a thread over in the game discussion forums HERE several years ago that lists a whole bunch of freeware shmups as well as some good commercial ones, though it doesn't include any of the more recent releases.
As with most shmups (Shoot Em Up's) it's an adaptation of the original invaders, but with loads of different enemy ship types attacking you constantly in ever increasing difficulties. At the end of a stage you are faced with a boss alien ship, that is usually hugh and had massive fire power. Avoid those deadly rays, missiles and bullets, and you survive to face the enxt set of enemy waves, with yet more bosses. The beauty of these games is the ability to upgrade your ship. As you progress you are able to pick up upgrades, that increase weapon strength, add armor or give you various missile upgrades, some even send out a wave of rockets immediately. To retain the weapon upgrades you need to avoid losing a life, or being hit. Every time you are hit you will lose one of your weapon upgrades, until you are back to the basic ship. If you are hit then, you will lose a life.
To beat any boss you do need as many upgrades as you can possibly earn. trying to destroy a boss with just the basic guns that the first level ship is equiped with will almost certainly see you losing a life, and probably the game. If you are highly skilled at this game, have quick reflexes, use tactics to avoid being hit by the boss, ypou may survive, but only the best will manage to do so.
Features:
More than 30 enemy units.
9 large missions with a huge Boss at the end of each.
17 bonuses.
More than 100 levels!
Video:
You can see video of game play HERE, HERE and HERE
System Requirements:
Windows 2000/ XP/ Vista/ 7/ 8
CPU: 600Mhz
System RAM: 128MB
DirectX: 6.0 or better
Hard Drive: 30MB
Conclusion:
Definitely a game worth having if it works okay on your computers. I'd be interested in knowing whether the game runs perfectly on an old couputer running XP compared to a new computer with Win 7 or win 8.
Scoring:
Gameplay - 7 (or 6 if you have mouse issues)
Graphics - 8 (considering its age)
Replayability - 7
Originality - 7
Total 30 out of 40 which is equivalent to 7.25 out of 10
Problems:
If you have any problems installing or getting Pahelika: Secret Legends to work please go HERE for help. I've posted all of the common problems and solutions in a FAQ thread, which you can find in the sticky section of the forums by following the above link.
If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums, in the game discussion section because I cannot moderate 24hrs a day over the weekend. I've created a thread HERE for that purpose. If you've installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn't guaranteed). Sometimes you can still register the game after the giveaway has ended so long as you managed to start the download before the giveaway ends. I've tested this and the grace period lasts for up to 1 hour.
It’s always worth checking out the free games sites because sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity (MPC) has the most with over 1000 games to choose from. Other sites include Gametop and FreeGamePick. Todays game is available from You can get Star Defender 2 HERE. You can also get tStar Defender 3 and Star Defender 4 from MyPlayCity. Star Defender 4 was my favorite from this series.
If you do download any games from MyPlayCity, Gametop or the other free game sites 'do' watch out for toolbars etc. Make sure you un-check the check-boxes during installation, and, in the case of MyPlayCity, every time you boot the game up, (this may have changed now as these free game sites tend to change the format frequently. .. I've posted links to all of the common free game sites below in the games, games games section. :)http://steamcommunity.com/app/263200
For now I won't be recommending you download games from Jenkat Games. They have changed the way you get games from their site. Diane has posted information about this over in the game discussion forums. If I have time or remember, I'll link to it.
Games, Games, and yet more Games plus Download, Installation & Game play Problems:
There are 331 games on sale over on Steam this week, ranging from 10% to 90% off. There's also a Sega sale this week with up to 75% off publishers prices. You can find a full list of all sale items HERE.
You'll also find some excellent deals over on the following Game sites.
GreenManGaming
Gamersgate Summer Sale
GOG (DRM free games)
Desura
Gamestop
GameFly (soon to be sold off)
Free Game Sites:
MyPlayCity (over a 1000 games to choose from)
Gametop
FreeGamePick
To be honest there are too many game deals around too list them all. Just visit the sites I recommend above and I'm sure you'll find something that suits you for a very decent price. If like me you prefer Steamworks games, many of the above sites also sell steamwork games.
If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles (there's over 20 of them - If you purchased all of them you'd be paying around $80 for around a thousand dollars worth of games); or check out the four day sales at IndieGameStand. you'll find the indie bundles thread HERE. The thread is outdated, but all of the links will still take you to the latest bundles.
The latest IndieGameStand game is A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 Dual Pack. It's a 2D sidescroller without a linear path. An action game with tactical combat and citybuilding. An adventure game that lets you free-roam a vast, procedurally-generated world. A Valley Without Wind defies genre stereotypes. Unlike other procedurally-generated games, you also get a logical progression in difficulty, plus helpful tips and checklists to guide your travels (should you need them).
plus if you pay over the average, which at the time of writing was $1.75 you will get a another game called Shattered Horizon. Both games come with Steam keys plus drm free copies.
You can pay as little as $1 for the game if you wish. This bundle ends around 5am (GMT) Tueday 28th April.
The latest Daily Indie game is called RoboWars (vaguely similar to Plants vs Zombies
In the near future, mankind has opened the way to the stars - made possible through the use of droids, able to operate in the hostile environment of the deep space. However, both spaceships and droids are dependent on Neonium for their power. However, this new source of energy was only found in the moons of Pluto and deposits are very limited, so the search started for a new supply.
Scouts ships discovered that a distant planet known as Praymos has rich deposits of Neonium. The only trouble is Praymos is not only inhabited but has a technological civilization similar to that of Earth of the second half of 20th century. The result was a battle not just for control of the resource, but the entire planet.
RoboWars is easy to play yet difficult to master. Each level has its own unique set of tactics - master the tactics and push on to victory! Select your cards wisely - deploy them even more carefully. Build your defenses to prevent the capture of your flags by the enemy. Place your units or set your traps; earn the right special abilities. In between attacks, construct new defenses. Manage your supplies of Neonium well - the more you have, the more special abilities cards will be available. The cards allow you to build battlefield towers, units and traps or to activate abilities. Build Neonium production plants for even more special ability cards. Destroyed enemy units will sometimes drop money, which can be used to buy units, traps, and attack cards.
You can get two keys if you pay more than the average of $1.01 (at the time of writing only a few people had purchased it had purchased it - the price will slowly rise, but rarely gets higher than around $1.30); one key to share with a friend or family member perhaps? You'll find that deal HERE. They also have four bundles of several games that'll cost you less than $1.50 each HERE (DIG Bundles 25, 26 and 27 plus Desura bundle 4). You get Steam keys for all of these games apart from the Desura bundle. Though some of the games are on Valves Greenlight project and should get Steam keys if Greenlit. The single game deal ends Midnight Tuesday (GMT) and will be replaced with Chains a challenging puzzle game with a unique feel and distinctive vector graphics style.
Most of the other bundles retail for around $5 give or take a few dollars (apart from the Daily Indie bundles that only cost $1.49 for six games), but you can pay as little as a dollar for some.
The free game from Origin has changed to the original Syndicate from 1993. It's been optimised for todays computers. Well worth getting, especially if you are into classic games from the 1990's Check it out HERE
