For the last 3 weeks I have downloaded the Free Game from this site. None of them have installed. I have tried the usual, turning off Anti Virus to no avail, It always reads the same , Software Download corrupted, re download. The splash screen states checked with website and OK and it then states the software is registered to be used!
The repeat downloads also fail to be corruption free. Please help, becoming very frustrated.

Have you checked the FAQ's thread overin the game discussion sticky section? If there's nothing to help there, try posing the problem in the forums. There's more exposure in the forums. Once a giveaway is over, it's unlikely anyone will reply to questions that have been posted in the comments section. apart from spammers and me, no one else is likely to see the posts.

The game was ok, but would not like to have to pay any money for it , as it was too short, I finished it in an afternoon!.
I loved the Alexander the great game you had awhile ago.

If it's okay to bring it up here, I've got a question about the Big Fish games. It seems like you need to install their gaming platform to use any of their games. I don't want to sound like I'm down on Big Fish, but is their platform safe to install and use?

On more important issues, I'm glad your house is coming around, Stephen. Builders with questionable practices generally don't like to be held accountable, but it sounds like you're handling it well.

...............................Moderator comment.................................

Yes it's safe. Once you've installed the games, you don't actually need to use the client. Go into each games folder and create shortcuts from the games exe file. you can then start the games directly without booting up the client.

Thanks wot for the BF code.

Don't want to turn this into too much of a discussion on Big Fish, but if it helps & FWIW etc., I've got a probably silly beef with the way it works, in that I can't copy/paste the password to sign in. My passwords generally aren't very typeable unless I want to look up ASCII codes. So for that sort of thing I use prepaid or gift or rebate cards. I have an Amazon acct. where I do the same thing -- I'll pick up Android apps/games & Kindle books for the immediate family & then share the password without having to worry.

I mention it as a possible solution for those like LadyLei who aren't always comfortable giving out card numbers. It also comes in handy when you sign up for a trial where unless you cancel you'll be billed for the next month or something -- sometimes they can make canceling a challenge, but if you've only got $3 on the card... :)

I cancelled my BFG subscription about 3 years ago, when virtually every new game was a HOG. I don't mind the odd HOG, but it got ridiculous a few years ago. I ended up at one point with 10 months of un-redeemed tickets as non of the new games appealed to me. I ended up exchanging the tickets for games I'd already purchased via Reflexive last year when they were sold off to Amazon. Amazon for some reason (probably the cost) decided not to keep the registration servers up and therefore stopped users being able to re register their games after a few months following the sale of Reflexive; (Reflexive created the brilliant breakout game Ricochet Infinity).

I'd purchased over 900 arcade games from Reflexive (that's when arcade games used to cost nearly $20 each - before the recession hit in 2008). If you reinstalled the games on a new computer or one that has had a new cpu, mother board or reinstalled/upgrading Operating System, you had to re register the games. I remember Amazon saying they would keep the servers open for a few month to give the Reflexive community time to install and register their games. They didn't allow for the above reasons for re-registering, so any game was effectively lost once you changed your computer (despite the original distributor claiming you had life time licences for the games). I was furious at first because I'd spent over $15 000 on those games over a period of 3 years (following my accident I was buying upwards of 3 games a day at one point as I found new games gave me some relief from the ever present pain pain {through distraction}). That may sound like a lot of money, but I've spent far more on my Steam collection since 2009; also it was well spent as it did help to distract me from the chronic pain significantly. Thankfully I found one of those registration code generators that enabled me to register most of my games whenever I needed to. Reflexive changed the coding every couple of years, so about 5% of my Refelxive games (between 45 to 50 games) are still unregisterable (not found the correct reg generator), so I started to buy those I felt I'd still play using my spare BFG tickets. I managed to spend them all eventually. :)

#27 If you have a code, you don't have to give ANY financial information. I just ignored it and placed the code in the spot. It made me wait while it checked and my price went to $0.00. I had already unchecked for the "club".

As for this game -- It's been offered several times before and It is a nice HOG. It's a little different in the "hidden" stuff but it works well.

It was supposed to be the start of a series from what I understand -- what ever happened to any sequels?

Thanks to GOTD for a nice game and #19 for a neat extra free game for the day (at least I got ONE freebie today since I already had the other one).

# 26, you are wrong what you say about #19's post. That Big Fish Game is 100% free! Joining the club is optional and as far as needing a credit card, you could just link your paypal account which is probably the same e-mail address you are using on the order anyway. Big Fish is a reputable company! If you choose not to get the game for your own reason, fine, but at least know the facts before you (mis)state them on a public board!

# 14 ....had some problems with downloads and we found the solution for us is to unplug the wireless and cable modem for a few minutes and then plug it back in again. We knew both laptops were fine, so figured it had to be our connection through comcast.

# 19.... went and checked that out and the first one does make the game free but you have to fill out all your personal information and give some sort of credit card or internet pay information to get it. then it informs you at the bottom that they will deduct a buck a month for their club. So no thanks on that one.

Couldn't really do anything with the 2nd link you posted as it is for i-phones and i-pads. So thanks anyway,

This was the first HOG game I played that was fairly interesting with decent game play. Ones I had seen before this one were very simple and looked to have been interesting to maybe 8 yr old. So this one I like to play every once in awhile. Have had it for a long time on my old puter so am glad to get it on this one. Thanks

Installs with no problems on my Windows 7 Home Premium, but a bit buggy afterwards, which by chance I discovered a fix for, so if anyone else meets the same problem, you can try doing the same.

After installing, it seemed to start up ok and in full screen mode. But when I then tried out the options, and changed from full to windowed screen mode, it started to bug as follows: whilst in windowed mode, I changed the other settings and then went back to full screen, but after that, when I selected 'Back' (which incidentally didn't highlight on mouse-over), instead of taking me back to the 'Play' menu, it just switched back to windowed mode, but stayed in the 'Options' screen. To cut a long story shorter, when in full screen, the 'Back' option didn't highlight, and no matter where on the screen I click, it returned me to windowed mode!

I was about to just give up and uninstall it, when I figured I'd check to see if there'd been any new comments addressing the issue, so I alt+tabbed out of the game screen to check, and left it running in the background.

Alas, there weren't any comments about the problem, so I went back to the game screen, intending to exit and uninstall, but hey presto!, all of a sudden the 'Back' button was highlighted in full screen mode! I checked it out a few times to be sure that the 'cure' would repeat itself, and it did! So if anyone else meets the same problem I did, just alt+tab out of the full screen to the desktop and back in again, and the 'Back' button will work properly!

About the gameplay itself: it's an okay game, but a little easy for me, as I completed it in under two hours, so I don't think I'd play it again for a long while. On the critical side, there are some grammatical and spelling errors throughout the text, which detract from the 'quality' feel you usually get from Playrix, so I was a bit surprised at that.

I bought this one some time in the lost eons of yesterday. It is OLD. It was very innovative when it came out, and the graphics are still lovely. But alas, it holds no intrigue for those of us who are adventure gamers. I really dislike HOS, and play the new HOPA games for the puzzles/adventures, and suffer through the HOS. Kudos to the devs who offer alternatives to the HOS, like mahjong or jigsaws. But if you like traditional HOGs, definitely give it a whirl.

I have this from last year when it was given away on Jan 26 and just to correct what was stated by a previous commenter, it was indeed titled the same name as today, "Spirit of Wandering: The Legend"

For the record, I am on a Win 7/64 bit laptop. Though personally, I prefer HOGs with a scarey/sinister theme, this one is enjoyable. It does not involve me like some other HOGs where I can end up losing hours being wrapped up in play. That can be a good thing when I have other things to do! :P -haha- But again, that is a matter of personal taste.

The very good graphics and gameplay make this a definite download for any HOG lover. If you are not necessarily a HOG lover but the theme of pirate/captain/romance/Flying Dutchman appeals to you, it is well worth giving this a try.

Thank you GG staff and Playrix!
As always, thank you Stephen for your tireless efforts here!

Stephen, I wanted to ask you something. I feel badly about not always helping out by commenting here but that is because I often may download a game but not get a chance to play it until a few days later. Are comments functional/beneficial only on the day of the giveaway? Would it serve any purpose to come back to the page days later to comment? Thank you!

..............................Moderator comment...............................

Hi jboy, no need to apologise. comments can be posted once the giveaway is over. Personally i'd like users to post when they are able. The more you play the game, the more you can comment. I appreciate that not everyone has the time to play a game right away. w.r.t. developers seeing these comments, that i cannot say. If you have something useful to say about the game, then I>MO. it's worth posting, even once the giveaway is over. I usually post links to previous comments when a game is repeated, (though I haven't over the last several weeks as I've been really busy with the house).

I'm hoping once our building work is complete and I've finally moved into my study, I'll have more time to write up better reviews. (We've had big problems with the builders; they should have completed the work back in September; we've been waiting for them to finish off loads of snags, then discovered that there were many ommissions and poor workmanship - most of it hidden. Ee've calculated they may have ripped us off for around $40 to $45 000 (that includes over charging and buying cheaper products than they were directed, omissions, double charging for jobs, (e.g part of the original quote was for several new radiators, we then decided to have a new combi boiler installed , they charged us a second time for 10 radiators, and then only installed - we've basically paid for 20. {just one example from many rip offs}) Grrrrr. Thankfully we have a good contract and have already taken legal advice. The builder has now kowtowed, and agreed to re do all of the work that we've discovered wasn't done right. Thankfully a close friend, who is a trained engineer, checked over the house and listed over 70 problems that havn't followed buiding regulations.

Glad to see you back, Stephen,
After looking over the review, videos, screenshots and comments, and given Playrix's reputation, my opinion is that this looks like a fun diversion. However, I doubt I will get to download it today as my husband is still having crises after being in the hospital a month and is begging me to rush in to hold his hand.

I've played this game before but am grateful for the giveaway as I don't currently own a copy. As with all Playrix games, the graphics are lovely. This is one for those who like more traditional hidden object gameplay as opposed to the overly ubiquitous HO adventure (point and click) games. Its not basic though - clues can be pictures, silhouettes or written and there is a special device for finding hidden items. Its quite an old game but well worth a download if you enjoy this genre ;o)

This is an "original" storyline? REALLY? Didn't I just see the same thing on Sponge Bob Square Pants?

I don't like to "swoon." And "swoon" over a game? LOSER!

I wonder what pirates did with their amazing CORAL collection?

Now, do I understand correctly. The music of this game is actually part of the gameplay? When I am searching for certain hidden objects the music gets louder and Louder and LOUDER until I find it? That's like...COOL, DUDES!

Are there cute lil fishes swimming around in the water? They should have used the cute lil fishes from (THE BEST GAME EVER DEVELOPED IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF AIR AND DIRT) FISHDOM in this game.

I AM going to download this game and I AM going to play it today. AURGH!

This is the same game that was given away here on 1/27/2013 of last year. That time it was simply titled Spirit of Wandering with out "The Legend" in the title. Don't think this is a newer version though. Still have it on my main computer running Win7 but will download it on to my laptop later as I don't have it on there yet!

Once you get past the Harlequin-Romance-novel scene of the title page, this is actually a very good HOG, with Playrix's usual luscious graphics and smooth play. I like not feeling rushed, too.

Installation

The downloaded file is approximately 82.5 Mb in size and unpacks to a wrapped dual activation and set up module a setup.gcd file (security plus the actual executable) and a read me document that tells you how to install the game and gives you the terms and conditions. By default the game is installed to:

C:\Program Files\Playrix Entertainment\Spirit Of Wandering

But you can change the installation path during the install wizard. A shortcut is installed to both the desktop and start menu programs list. There's also a shortcut link to Playrix's web site, and you can uninstall the game via the start menu programs lists shortcut if you wish.

The game plays fine on XP Pro 32 bit with Service pack 3, Vista 64 bit Home Premium with Service pack 1 and Win 7 Ultimate and Pro 64 bit versions (I don’t have a home copy). Not had time to test it on Vista yet. and I haven't installed my copy of win 8 yet.

The Game:

The following is a large part of a review posted over at Gamezebo. I left it too late to write much of my own thoughts on the game other than to say it’s a hidden object game.

Hidden object fans will swoon over the romantic hidden object adventure Spirit of Wandering: The Legend. It's the tale of a female pirate captain who loses her crew - including her lover, Jack - during an attack by the infamous ghost ship the Flying Dutchman. The crew aren't dead, but merely imprisoned in the spirit world, which means the captain must use her compass and Jack's magic orb to get them back.

spirit 007

Since spirits have a tendency to return to familiar places, the captain travels to locations that were important to her six crew members in an effort to pull them back into the world of the living. In order to do this, she must recover a series of items, including special "cherished" items that were especially important to each crew member.

Each location is split into several sub-scenes that contain a blend of normal and cherished items to find. Cherished items are unique in that they phase in and out of the real world, and can only be seen by holding the magic orb in front of them. To active the orb, you'll first have to find a short list of normal items and click on them with the mouse to cross them off a list. Once the orb is activated, it acts like a homing beacon. By listening to verbal cues and watching as the flames of the orb burn brighter, you can pinpoint the local of the cherished item and get it to show up.

spirit 008

When the cherished item is found, a new set of normal items appears, and the cycle continues until all cherished items are found in a given scene. The system works very well. Cherished items are identified by picture, while normal items are identified by a textual description which adds variety to the searching.

Item descriptions are more imaginative than the usual fare - expect to search for "Grecian pitcher of brass," "the curved blade of a soldier," "a pirate's hand pistol," and "the bust of a nobleman." Some descriptions border on riddles: "The home of golden bugs," for example, refers to a green shield adorned with gold scorpions, while "a container for timely sand," refers to an hourglass.

Spiri of Wandering The Legend 8

The lists of items are logical in the context of the game, and all adhere to an old-fashioned sea-faring pirate culture - for example, there are no CDs, computer, cars or telephones to find here. Rather, you'll be searching for things like quill pens, compasses, candlesticks, coral and wooden clocks.

When a crewmember is found they will reveal the location of a treasure trove. Treasure troves are fun mini-games where you're presented with a screen full of gold pieces and treasure, and have to try to click on as much of it as possible in 60 seconds. Replenishing your gold allows you to use your compass to give you hints if you get stuck finding a normal item. As you move the compass around the screen, the needle will rotate to point in the direction of an item.

spirit 009

Spirit of Wandering is bolstered by gorgeous graphics and suitably stirring music that uniquely complements each level. The game offers eighteen scenes set across six locations that include a pirate port, a primitive island village, an underwater grotto and the decks of the Flying Dutchman itself, as well as six treasure troves. This is a respectable number of levels considering that, unlike other hidden object games, you never re-visit the same scene twice.

What's more, the story is well-crafted and engaging. You'll get to know the six crew members you're looking for quite well by the end of the game thanks to colorful descriptions written in a diary-style book, and cherished items that are matched to each crew member's personality. Khikaru, for example, is the ship's look-out so it makes perfect sense that his cherished items are a spy-glass and a sexton for navigating.

spirit 010

While I would whole-heartedly recommend Spirit of Wandering: The Legend, there are a few issues worth noting. The first is that the riddle-like item descriptions, while clever, can often refer to more than one of the items on-screen. Finding which of the ten pots that the clue "a clay pot with a handle" actually refers to is a matter of trial-and-error that requires a bit of patience. Other times it's a simple case of two or more identical items - like barrels and beaded necklaces - appearing in different locations.

Players also can't expect to rely too much on hints, because it costs the hefty sum of 60 gold coins every time you use one. If you get stuck, you can exit to the map and try another location, or just wait it out - if you wait long enough, the game throws you a bone by briefly highlighting a hidden item. There are no time limits in Spirits of Wandering, so you can take as long as you like, however, if you randomly click on the wrong things too many times in rapid succession, you'll lose some of your precious gold.

Once story mode is completed, players can go back and play scenes individually in Advanced mode.

Music:

If you don't like the music you can change it for something that you prefer, but first you must convert the music to the ogg format then re-name each piece to one of the following: 0.ogg, 1.ogg, 2.ogg, 3.ogg, 4.ogg, 5.ogg, gold.ogg and menu.ogg. You can find the music folder via the path:

C:\Program Files\Playrix Entertainment\Spirit Of Wandering\music

As a precaution I'd back up the original music, but if you do forget, you can get the original files by downloading the version from Gametop or MyPlayCity and using the files from that version. If you don't have a audio converter, you'll find freeware versions such as Audacity HERE or others via Google.

Conclusion:

This is a reasonable Hidden Object Game (H.O.G.), though there's nothing remarkable about it. There has been a plethora of HOG's released over the last few years, many of which are much better than this one (IMO); that said if you like the genre then you'll find this is a decent game. I got bored pretty quickly with the game, but then I had reason to be because I've played too many of the games over the last few years and was also very keen to return to some of my more recently purchased games such as Crysis 2, Need for Speed: Shift 2, Shogun 2: Total War and Dragonage 2, consequently I was impatient to finish the editing of this review. Unless you absolutely hate HOG's I recommend you download this free game.

The quality of presentation and the overall game play deserves at least 7 out of 10 as does the music. As mentioned above, this game is now available from sites like Gametop 24/7, so if you miss today’s giveaway, or lose it to a format you can still get a copy from that free game download site :)

If you miss today's game giveaway it's available 24/7 from both MyPlayCity and Gametop (though from Gametop it's got a slightly different name). You can download it via HERE via Gametop or from MyPlayCity HERE

Problems:

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game discussion section. If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed. It’s always worth checking out the free games sites as sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them.

If you're looking for something other than today's game check the didimatic site via THIS link for some brilliant deals.

If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals such as the Indie Game bundles or the four day sales at IndieGameStand. The latest IndieGameStand game is Shelter where you experience the wild as a mother badger sheltering her cubs from harm. . The average price to qualify for bonus content is $1.45, but you can get the game for $1 if you wish.

You'll find more free Hidden Object games over at MyPlayCity (over 140 of them), Jenkat games, Gametop and FreeGamePick but please be aware that these sites may add toolbars and home page hijacks to your web browser, but these can be avoided by un-checking the appropriate boxes during installation. Also when you close any of their games down, your browser is opened and directed to the sites home page. This is innocuous so don’t worry. Closing the page ends any connection and nothing is downloaded.

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
