Dear GOTD users,
Twitter authorization problem was fixed!

Please try to get the code now.

Sorry for the inconvenience and have a nice weekend,
GOTD team

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for trying to sort the problem out. However, it's still not working for me. When i click on the twitter button it takes me to a reauthorisation window, where i sign into my Twitter account the allow the giveaway app to authorise. I get the message:

''Redirecting you back to the application. This may take a few moments.''

There's a small circle that rotates indicating the process is running, this continues without a break for much longer than a few moments.

Update:
It's still redirecting 20 minutes later........

over 1 hour later, still redirecting, then I decided to cancel and received the following:

Spellweaver

In Brief

Spellweaver is a 'Free to Play' game developed by Dream Reactor and released Feb 2016. It's a trading cards game on the lines of Magic: The Gathering. Where two players assemble decks of cards that contain spells and enchantments as well as attacking creatures.

spellweaver 001
Suggestions:
If you don't like today's game please give some feedback detailing why you don't like the game and how it could be improved from your point of view . If you don't like this genre at all, explain why. There are still thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you, and in the case of todays game include a mode that would allow you to experience the game without using a VR head set.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can get the game free either via Steam HERE or directly from Dream Reactor HERE

Installation
This version appears to be linked to Steam, I cannot confirm this becasue I'm unable to complete all three actions becasue Twitter won't authenticate. If you are having this problem, there were a couple of comments from last weeks game that gave suggestions as to how to fix this. It didn't work for me. If you are unable to get a key for todays game, you can download the game directly from the developer HERE

You can also install the game directly from Steam by going to the Steam store. The game is free, tohugh there are extra packs that can be purchased. It may be that the key you get for completing all actions unlocks a giveaway special dlc that gives you a free extra pack of cards, but this is supposition. If anyone can confirm this for me i'd be grateful. Thank you.

spellweaver 002
If you still haven't opted to install the Steam client, it can be worth it just for the free games available of which there are a few hundred. The client does not take up much hard drive space and has a small memory foot print. Once installed make sure you are not signed up for the beta program otherwise you'll get daily updates, which often means re booting the client. For those who want to add even more games to their Steam account cheaply there are literally hundreds of excellent Steam game codes available at this time for upwards of 90% off from various Indie bundle Sites. You can see these by checking out the thread called The Weekly Round-Up of Game deals over in the game discussion forums HERE. Also the Steam summer sale has started with discounts as high as 90% off. You can pick up loads of indie games for as little as £0.39p.

There are also a few hundred free Steam games, some of them Free to Play which generally means pay to win as most (but not all) include dlc's that enhance the game. If you play one of those games, you are likely to get trounced by those who have purchased the buffs and better weapons. there are also lots of free single player games. You'll find lists of these free and free to play games via various Steam groups or via the Games drop down menu on Steams Store page. Just hover your mouse over games (next to Featured Items) and you'll see Free to Play. Clicking on that will open up a list of free games with four tabs labelled Popular New Releases, Most Popular, Coming Soon and Specials. If you look to the right of the Most Popular list you can see a filter system that is divided into four sections, i.e. Narrow by tag, Narrow by category, Narrow by feature and Narrow by Operating system. The first one is extendable by clicking on see all. You can now see all of say the single player games by checking the checkbox labelled the single player. If you want to see a list of all free and free to Play games check all of the boxes. Checking just the single Player box then selecting the Most Popular tab will show you every free single player game available. At this time there appears to be 117 free single player games. If you check all of the boxes you'll find 445 games of various genres.

The game installs to the following path by default unless you either selected to install to a different path or if you went directly to the developers site and cut out the need for Steam. Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish:

C:\Program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\

You can select to have a shortcut installed to the desktop and start menu if you wish

spellweaver 003
Introduction:
Spellweaver is a fast-paced and strategically deep digital card game, featuring several mechanics unique to the genre. Created by an indie team of seasoned game developers, and designed by a Magic: the Gathering National Champion, it is easy to learn, yet challenging for veteran card game players.

One of Spellweaver's core gameplay features is hero development. During a game, your hero levels up, gains resources, and can develop additional hero skills, letting you craft the perfect hero to complement your deck's strategy.

Spellweaver's combat system features an innovative creature speed mechanic. Fast creatures allow you to dictate how combat goes, but they have generally weaker stats. Slower creatures are bigger and stronger, but they are also easy to outmaneuver.

Spellweaver's design allows for quick games, yet offers a huge number of combinations and paths to victory to explore. Join in and have endless hours of fun with this strategic card game created with a lot of passion!

If you have a problem installing or activating or getting Spellweaver to work please visit the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread, which you can find HERE

The Game:

These days, collectible card games are a dime a dozen. For a while, the pool size of available CCGs, especially digitally, was about one: MtG. But thanks to the popularity of Hearthstone — and other titles like HEX: Shards of Fate, Ascension, Legends of Norrath, even Pokemon TCG — the genre has found itself as one of the more popular ones around (of course, the dozens on iOS and Android devices have certainly helped its cause as well). The problem this all presents, though, is that it is hard to stand out among the crowd as a digital CCG. Because there are so many solid titles fighting for players’ time these days, developers have to knock it out of the park with their design and execution to get people to leave the heavyweights, like Hearthstone and Magic, and flock to their product. So how does Spellweaver fair when put next to the handfuls of great games in this burgeoning market?

spellweaver 004
Right off the bat, Spellweaver is working against itself. This is not an easy game to simply jump into, learn, and then be off to the races. This is an involved, strategic card game that is going to require expert analysis to outwit opponents. The game uses Magic as something of a foundation, and then builds on it, mixing in additional systems that will delight those looking for high-level, super nuanced play and absolutely madden, and then subsequently isolate, those wanting something a bit more accessible. It’s safe to say that with Spellweaver, there isn’t going to be much cross-pollination with games like Hearthstone, which is the king of the “easy to learn, difficult to master” design philosophy. Nothing makes this more apparent than the forty-five-minute time limit each match has. Forty-five minutes. Talk about setting a particular tone.

At its core, Spellweaver is a PvP-centric card game in which two players forge decks of cards so as to square off against one another. Like Magic before it, cards here are broken down into items and spells of various types, attacking and defending creatures, damage-dealing spells, enchantments, artifacts and the like. These cards are summoned to a playfield, giving way to a back-and-forth cadence between opponents until one is out of hit points. Sounds pretty basic, right? Yeah, it’s not. Each play-deck is built by the player, put together from cards obtained through booster packs that range in size from four to ten cards. The cards are random, of course, and can be paid for via in-game resources or purchased with real money. When building a deck, it’s a pretty standard affair: each card has a fixed cost, which is paid using resource cards that folks must include in their deck composition. So, it’s just like the system used in Magic; resource cards here just aren’t called “mana” but they operate in the exact same way. But, it’s not as easy to accumulating enough mana to then summon a creature. There’s an extra step in here.

spellweaver 005
Cards now have levels to them. So, what players must do to effectively put a creature on the board is they have to have the required mana and also the required level. So, how does a player gain levels? By making a choice with resource cards. When playing a resource, folks will have to decide if they are going to play it and apply it toward their mana pool or their level. It’s an added layer of strategy that really changes the rhythm of the game. Some will love it because there’s another proverbial moving part to all of this; others will hate it, not wanting to have to strategize about yet another thing. This mechanic rewards smart play, and because of that, is actually a pretty unique addition to the tried-and-true formula. Unfortunately, as a result of this, it creates another barrier to entry, and it drags the flow of matches down. There are also champion abilities to unlock throughout the game as well. These are level-based, thus giving players another incentive to choose to play a resource card toward their level rather than mana pool.

The problem this feature presents is in the domain of balance. It was already easy to get mana-starved in MtG; and now with Spellweaver, it’s even easier to, not only get mana-starved by a bad deal but to shortchange yourself with one poor decision whose effects linger for the remainder of the match. Again, this presents an issue when trying to build up a playerbase. No doubt, the CCG purists will love this punishing approach; but a game can only survive so long on ardent fans — at some point, they need a broader audience for sustainability, and I’m just not sure Spellweaver will have that thanks to these design choices.

spellweaver 006
Speaking of these kinds of choices, let’s talk about the game’s attacking system. So, players can’t just summon a creature to the board and then have it attack whomever. That’s not how it works here. Creatures, in addition attack and life values, also have speeds. And a creature can only defend an attacking creature if their speed is equal to or greater than that of which is attacking. This is another factor to keep track of when laying down a card. Again, veterans are probably going to like having another thing to take into consideration when planning their advance; but the average player (not just the casual player) will find this, in conjunction with the others, to be daunting, overwhelming, annoying, or some combination of the three. At least there’s the option to play just the AI — so those at a loss, will have the opportunity to understand the various systems. It’s just too bad that to even play the AI, one has to be connected to the Internet.

With that said, it should be known that, despite these limitations, Spellweaver employs some truly unique cards. With as many CCGs as there are out there, it’s hard to find a card game that manages to surprise you with interesting card abilities. And yet, I found myself routinely surprised at how distinct some of the creatures and spells are here. Better still, there are a lot of cards available, sure to delight those who want a CCG with serious card depth.

Where the game also sets itself apart from the others is in its approach to something resembling a campaign. While this is not HEX, which has a super robust campaign complete with characters, dialogue, and a story, Spellweaver does have a world map with various locations to which players visit. Traveling to these spots (which is simply done by clicking on a target location) nets a quest. Completing said quest then provides a reward, usually in the form of a new card. It’s a really neat system that adds a bit more replayability than something that’s strictly match-oriented. Players also have a persistent level, which is also a fun inclusion. Completing quests provides experience points; the more a player levels up, the more they unlock — be it modes, titles, or decks.

spellweaver 007
There are also trials in which to take part that earn folks booster packs and gold. When it comes to content, Spellweaver really has a decent amount of it. This is all the more impressive not only because others of its kind sometimes lack in this department, but also because the game is very new. So, here’s hoping the devs continue to update and support the game going forward. We do wish, however, that more would have been done with the concept of persistence. It doesn’t embrace the notion fully, like HEX, but it also doesn’t want its features to be barren like a more straightforward card game. It’s as if the developers weren’t quite sure what they wanted to do with the game outside of the core gameplay. Consequently, what we’ve ended up with is slapdashed campaign-lite component.

Helping Spellweaver‘s cause is its presentation. The game is really quite striking. From the gorgeous card art to the beautiful world map, the game has one of the stronger aesthetics out there regarding CCGs, even if it is a bit on the generic side. The only downside to the visual presentation is the interface. It gets the job done, but can look like a bad browser game at times. Or at the very least, looks outdated by approximately a decade. The music, on the other hand, is also more than serviceable. It won’t win any awards, but there’s a little bit of everything — smooth, rolling legato pieces thrown in with heavier, pulse-pounding anthems and haunting dirges. There aren’t a plethora of tracks, which is too bad considering how well-composed each are, but folks looking for a quality aural experience to go along with their card-combat will be more than pleased.

Review and conclusion was written by Bradly Halestorm. (I've not had time to explore the game fully) Reference accessed HERE. 25th June 2016

Conclusion:
Spellweaver‘s very nature is the thing that will ultimately get in the way of people playing it because let’s be honest, you either love collectible card games or you don’t. But for those who do love the genre, there just aren’t a ton of reasons to devote your time and money to Spellweaver and not something like Hearthstone or Magic. It’s not accessible like Hearthstone, it lacks the history and entrenched playerbase of MtG and it doesn’t commit to fully to embracing its dabbled-in persistence, making it inferior to something like HEX, which is, for all intents and purposes, the only true persistent CCG out there. Those who want to play something akin to Magic with added (but extraneous) systems so as to have just one more layer of tactical depth to contend with will enjoy Spellweaver. At the end of the day, though, it doesn’t know its audience — and games that don’t understand who they’re for typically fail to capture anyone.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the developer Dream Reactor for giving away a key for Spellweaver, and to the game giveaway team for giving the community the opportunity to check out this game.

Useful Information:
The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to Nox. Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000 for Microsoft Windows. It details the story of Jack, a young man from Earth who is pulled into a high fantasy parallel universe and has to defeat the evil sorceress Hecubah and her army of Necromancers to return home. Depending on the player's choice of character class at the beginning of the game (warrior, conjurer, or wizard), the game follows three largely different linear storylines, each leading to its unique ending. If you've ever played the early RPG's such as Baldurs Gate and Icewind dale or the early Fallout series and liked them, you'll probably lik e this game as well. It's 16 year sold now, but still looks oretty f=good for it's age. This type of game has held it's appeal and looks far more than the early firs tperson games. I highly recommend it..

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing the game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made by the community below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

If today's game wasn't to your liking, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee (from your favorite coffee house) via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.

I've still to send out some Steam keys to those that commented on previous weeks games. I decided to take a break from virtually everything for the last few weeks partly to recharge my batteries. I am not going to run the free keys again this week as I'm still behind with everything at the moment, it would just confuse my morphine addled brain even more than it is already. :) I will resume giving more keys away once i've sent out all of those I owe to community members. To those that have qualified for keys so far , please be patient. Also, remember I need to see what you want via the thread I've linked too above that can be found in the game discussion forums. If you've had problems signing into your forum account, let me know what your forum name is and i'll resend you a new password.

So how come is it that everyone else gets to complain except me? I wrote a Pointed Comment Saturday, but it is nowhere to be found. Yes, it was pointed, like some other comments I've read, but I did not curse or use slurs of any kind, so what gives?

This is just another GGOTD FAIL!

Like I've stated before this is not a Giveaway, it may be free for some, but for those who do not do Social Media, for whatever reason, it is not a Giveaway, but a Competition for those that do use social media which counters the name Game GIVEAWAY of the Day. I saw nowhere in this, supposed, promotion where it said it was a competition. I have a Twitter Account, which I rarely use, but I did use it for this competition, which did not good. I do not have a "facebook" account neither will I be forced to join again; I won't get into the reasons why - I used to have a "facebook" account, but no longer neither will I ever have another. Some have felt forced to get Twitter and "facebook" accounts for this competition.

No Whiterabbit, this is not an opinion, but rather "fact".

So how DO you download this game? This is the first game download I've tried - hitting the "download now" button just gives me another 3 buttons for FB and Twitter, which I don't use - is it even possible to get the game without those entries?

Looks like it's another wasted giveaway. Giveaways like this benefit no one. GGOTD, the publisher, us users, we all loose out. Surely there must be a better way.

As for deleted comments, I think that is much more common on the GOTD side of the house. They censor any comment that is critical of them or the program offered.

I cannot figure how to get this game. I put it on FB. Then went back to read all the comments. I decided to delete it from FB. I don't want a game full of bugs or a game that is frustrating to get. I tried late last night and just now and the same thing. It is irritating the way games are going now. I have been a member of GAOD for years. When it was only a game giveaway. sad day and no explanation of why they are doing it this way.

............................Moderator Comment............................

I've explained the reasons why many times. Basically no one wants to give away games at the moment, unless they can earn something from it. The other free game sites such as MyPlayCity, TooMky Games and Gametop all pay the developer for every game downloaded. Developers can also make a lot of money if they put their games in one of the many Indie Bundles now available. for example, the Humble bundle sells literally hundreds of thousands of bundles and a percentage of the money is given to each of the developers who contribute. This can be a substantial amount compared to what the giveaway team give to developers. Also, there are constant sales that do not help with getting more free games. The giveaway team have tried to find other ways to get games for us. This is one way. Not ideal i know, but at least the opportunity is there.

[This is actually a reply to the Moderator Comment.]

I find it hard to believe it's the publisher insisting on the giveaway being done like this, considering that this same expansion pack was given away on another site just a few weeks ago *without* the forced social media sharing.

ONCE AGAIN another "FREE GAME" that no one can get unless you have a twitter , facebook , or a steam account HMMM. maybe someone should look up the word free . I've tried to get a steam account and was told couldn't connect to server. These games should be free for everyone! not just the ppl that have accounts that can be spammed with ads.

I made a Twitter-account.
I made a Facebook account.
I clicked on the red buttons. some of them maybe twice.
When all the red buttons changed into vinked boxes I did get a text with a code and a downloadsite.
I downloaded the game(220Mb), installed and played it.
The game needed contact with the internet to get updates etc.
I created a new account and used the code. All went fine.
The screen in Win10 with a good graphic was much, much better then in WinXP VM.
dlc's: I do not know what these are.

............................Moderator Comment............................

The base game is free to play, but you can buy two dlc's that give you two extra packs of cards, each pack includes 60 extra cards and one hero. These are useful f you decide to play against other human players, but they are not necessary, especially if you play against the AI.

I am not a fan of this type of game. Card games to me are the traditional decks, not this game's type.
I also would not even bother with trying to get it with the hoops and the "may" get thing.
Game giveaway should be renamed to "once in awhile free giveaways, the rest are lotteries".

Help. Unable to download giveaway. Every time I click the download link, it sends me to the bottom of the page. I have tried Chrome and Envy. My husband tried on his computer and it did the same thing. It doesn't download.

Linda, it is not a download we are used to doing. You have to do what it says in the box you are taken to, only to MAYBE get the code for the game. Good luck if you choose to 'enter to win".

Getting the same authorization problems as everyone else, and would have used a relatives twitter to get it anyways as my occupation does not allow the use of social media.
Not a fan of card games, so this one probably wouldn't have been my cup of tea as it was. Would be nice to go back to real giveaways and if they did the 'negative vibes' would go away as well. Hopefully another game tomorrow or next week ;)

Sorry, but I cannot tell anyone that I "Like" a game, or a sandwich, or a washing machine when I haven't so much as tried them. Not even if my apparent enthusiasm will give me a chance to "win" the item - which I may well hate once I have it in my hands.

It's just dishonest. It could be called "fraud" if money were involved. I wish this hadn't happened to the GOTD pages.

Not written in anger - in deep, deep sorrow at the loss of a dear friend of many years' standing.

I agree that posting, commenting, etc. in order to receive the "Giveaway" negates the promise of a giveaway. The efforts I have made to comply, are fruitless! Please, offer them under another forum if the software is not downloadable as advertised and promised.

I have set up a group on Steam for those of us that have Steam and need help (or can give help) regarding the offerings on this site that are bound to Steam. This way we can help eachother when needed without the need of making huge friends lists. The group is public and basically follows the same posting rules as on this site, no cursing, no racism, hate, politics, religion, hacks, cracks, warez.
Of course you can use the group to find other players for the multiplayer games given away like todays offering and non steam related games given away here can be discussed as well of course. Join the group by going to http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ggotd

............................Moderator Comment............................

Great Idea , though one was set up many years ago http://steamcommunity.com/groups/giveawayoftheday, partly so that interested community members could play games such as Half life 2 Deathmatch, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Unreal tournament 3 and other games. I used to set up servers at the weekend, but it got too much after a while as no one else helped out. It was also meant as a meeting place for those who had joined Steam. I used to post details in the forums, but haven't in quite some time. ;)

I am very disappointed in your site. Now we have to jump through hoops to get games. I don't have a Twitter account, did the Facebook sign in and "Liked" the game but no download link. All I got was a page all about the game and "Play Free" but no download code or link. I don't play games directly off the Internet.
What a shame, "GGOD," first "My Play City," puts up games that won't work on a 64 bit machine or they do something to the games, (such as making us put their links on our computers), and now you are making us do things, to get a game. I am completely disgusted and sad you had to do this.

Just reading your review again I noticed you probably don't know about how to use todays key for those getting the key and not having twitter issues here it is:
Download Spellweaver from steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/429680
Start the game to make an account, in the sign up window you will find an entry field where you have to put todays key, this will give you the extra Wrath of Shamans deck. There are two additional decks in the DLC store but NOT the Wrath of Shamans deck. The WoS deck is a rage (red) deck. The current available expensions are both $20 /€20 / 15GBP and there seem to be several decks available for ingame gold as well. when youi install the game go to https://www.rddit.com/r/Spellweaver/comments/4eh5zi/spellweaver_75k_new_player_referral_codes/ before making an account and read it for extra decks and gold but these MUST be activated within the first hour of play (I noticed it to late unfortunately) for a referal code please use mine if you like which is VLANMP , this will give you 75000 gold and together with one of the codes listed in the linked post it will give you 150000 worth of gold and if I was reading it correct a special card back image

remember this MUST be done within an hour of creating your account in the game so basically do
Create account, fill in the GGOTD code during the signup
ingame click on the gears icon and choose redeem key and fill in VLANMP
click again on the gear icon and choosse redeem key and fill in one of the codes from above link (only one can be used)
happy gaming

Question - My code isn't working, do you have to wait until the game is fully downloaded to use the key. What is the key for? (a pack of cards maybe? There's two DLC for cards available on steam)

Yep, revisiting Magic the Gathering with this indeed. If you are not into tactical card games like Magic the Gathering and pokemon trading card game ... don't bother with this one. If you are not planning to shell out money for additional boosterpacks and decks ... don't bother with this one

that said, if you do like games like Magic you will find Spellweaver to be a well thought out adaption of the concept. The cards itslef are nice to see (although lacking the humor you can find on many Magic cards) with different sets to choose from as starter sets. It seems you get a new starter set at level 5 to give you a bit more choice without immidiatly needing to buy . If you are someone that understands the concept and learn to play it well there is even a championship where real money can be earned ($2000 guaranteed)

I s**k at Magic and most likely will s**k in this one as well so I will play the AI for a while until I get to know my deck a bit and get into real pvp where I will be defeated by young kids often, I just know lol

Thanks GGOTD for giving us something else then the match3 and HoG offerings you usually have

Ain't that typical. Finally something I'd really like to have, but cannot get because of the Twitter problem. I've been coming here since the game giveaways inception back in Dec 2006 and have more or less purchased every game ever given away here, yet the two times I don't have the game and wanted them, i.e. Amygdala and today's I've not been able to get them (I later purchased Amygdala via one of the indie bundles).

Hi Delenn, thank you lots. Literally just posted about not being able to get a code for today's game. I've purchased virtually every game ever given away here, yet the only times I've really wanted the games (twice) I've not been able to get them. Same with the competitions, I've entered every one of them yet not won one key despite last weeks having virtually a 100% chance of winning (I had 32 entries out of approx 3300, with 100 keys that's about a 98% chance of winning yet I didn't. Most of the competitions have had between a 40 to 50% chance of winning. Others have won 5 or more keys over the three months they have been running these competitions. I must be really unlucky)

I still hope things will turn around, but I must admit the rash of negativity that has held these comments for the past few months has taken it out of me a lot and I'm finding it really difficult not to scream. I wasn't able to moderate last Sunday becasue we had guests and were celebrating Fathers day. I aimed to do all of the moderating late evening but when i was faced with almost 200 comments, most of which having problems, and most talking about how slow the download speed was I just closed my computer down. It took me almost six days to finally log back in and deal with some of the comments. I've tried to explain nearly every time we get a large download that due to limited bandwidth, downloads can become really slow due to the bottle neck caused by hundreds of community members downloading at the same time. The more logging in and downloading the slower the downloads speeds become. Last weeks game was a particularly large game so it was inevitable that we would have problems.

I cannot download the game. I cannot read the terms and conditions (due to a server error)
I logged in to Twitter. I never use Facebook. So, what to do now?

..........................Moderator comment..........................

Check my review for download links. You can download the free version of the game directly via steam or from the developer. The code you get for doing the two Facebook and one Twitter hoops gives you a Steam code for an extra pack of cards, which can be useful if you play the online part of the game against other human players as the cards give you a better choice of magic spells, attacks and defenses. The extra packs called dlc's cost money, whereas the base game is totally free.

I used to look forward to seeing what new game was waiting on Sat and Sun. Now either you have to enter a contest to win a chance at a game or the game takes all day to download or there is some other problem. I am getting close to deciding that "free" isn't worth the price.

How do I download the game? When I click on download, it jumps to Three ways to enter. I've done 2 of the three. No further instructions and nothing happens...?

...................Moderator Comment........................

To get the key you have to complete all three of the tasks. I presume you are getting the same problem as i and others are getting with respect to the Twitter task> i.e. failed to authenticate??? :)

If you are interested in playing this game you can go directly to the developers site or the Steam page associated with this game and download the base game for free as it is a Free to Play game. They key is possibly for one of the dlc's that you normally have to pay for, though i can't qualify that because I'm unable to get a key as well..... I've posted links to both download pages i.e directly from the developer or via Steam in my review above.

My comment was removed last time and so I will only say I agree with the others, I realise that it gets harder to get coders to give away stuff for free, but one thought is why don't they replatform some of the older games that are lost in the ether, captain keen, cosmo and so many others that were dos based could be re built for windows in seconds with a few easy changes

of course its only an idea, you could even call them Vintage :)

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Neil, that's a very good idea. Some of the classics have been rebuilt and re released as HD versions. Though there are still hundreds more that should be given the same treatment. I'm sure the community would love to see many of the older games re invigorated. You can still play most of those old games using DOSBox a free application that enables you to play those old games (many of which are still freely available via abandonware sites, though sites like GOG (Good Old Games) have sought out the original owners of the best of the abandonware and managed to get the rights to sell those games, so those have been removed from the abandonware sites. There are still a few gems to be found, but those will undoubtedly disappear into GOG's books eventually.

Regarding your deleted comment. Can you tell me which game it was posted for? I can only recall deleting one community members comment in it's entirety due to the guy repeatedly posting inappropriate words in several posts over the space of a few moments. If a comment is deleted by me I will post a comment telling the poster why it was deleted. The only posts I delete are those that contain swearing, and if I thought a post was bullying i would also delete that, otherwise your comment should not have been deleted. I do think someone else has access to the admin panel becasue there has been some strange happenings of late where I've seen community members IP's blocked (which I then unblock). :)

The following games have 50% off till 4th July when the Steam sale ends.

Cosmo - £1.49

Duke Nukem - £2.99 - (two dlcs available which can be purchased as a collection with the main game for £4.12)

Keen Dreams - £1.67

Commander Keen - £1.49

neil, Apogee games are on Steam. Keen, Cosmo, Duke Nukem. They have not been replatformed, they always ran on Windows but come with Dosbox and play exactly the way they did when released, aside from the infrequent Dosbox crash...

Reply   |   Comment by Greg  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

neil,

GOG has sadly become greedy. GOG did bring back great titles, but now they release too much crap.

Earlier it was very easy finding abandonware online. Nowdays i am most often met with 'Removed - GOG has the ownership - visit their site'. Suddenly i have to pay for games i earlier could get for free.

I am not amazed that everything GOG releases are found on the piratenetworks. People are fed up to pay for earlier free games, abandonwares...

............................Moderator Comment............................

I totally agree with you. Prior to GOG opening it's site several years ago, you could get all of the older games pre 20oo and some newer ones totally for free becasue the original owners had abondoned them. The owners of GOG started to search out these owners and set up deals with them so that they took ownership, or part ownership of the titles and were then able to sell them. I saw abandonware as an opportunity to revisit many of the games I'd originally already purchased on floppy discs, but could no longer play on modern machines. I'd dumped all of my old games (regretfully) when we had a large skip during some building work about 12 years ago. And was really pleased when I discovered abandonware. Then GOG reared its ugly head and took away that perk. GOG have now hoovered up just about all of the decent games that were originally available for free. The only advantage buying from GOG as opposed to the abandonware sites is that they have incorporated DOSBox into the games, making it simpler to play then rather than have to mess around with DOSBox, but it wasn't that hard to do once you got used to DOSBox.

Wonder how many hours this will take to download?

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Ian, the game is just over 200MB in size, so won't take as long as last weeks. The problem the site has when a game is as large as last weeks is the bandwidth. Because the game was around a gigabyte, more community members ended up downloading at the same time, which apart from creating a bottleneck, slowed down the download speeds significantly for everyone becasue the bandwidth is shared amongst all those who were downloading at the time. I downloaded the game before it went live so was the only community member downloading and got the download in less than 4 minutes with a broadband connection of 100MB. Once the community started to download this speed would have been reduced every time someone joined the download que. :)

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Fisch, it's become increasingly harder to get developers to give away games totally for free. Those free game sites such as MyPlaycity, pay the developer for every game downloaded, there are over 60 indie bundles available a this time, where you can get a wide variety of indie games and even some AAA games for virtually nothing and there are constant sales on at many of the major distributors, so developers are less likely to give games away to a site such at this one. Also, the price of games over the last several years have crashed significanlty reducing the profits made by game developers. for example prior to 2008 y most arcade games cost $19.99, wheras most arcade games can now be purchased for a third of the price. Taking into account inflation, that is a significant loss to th=e developers and is probably one of the reasons many indie developers have closed and even some of the large AAA game developers that had budgets of millions for each of their games have gone bust (e.g. THQ the developer of the Red Faction Guerilla, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes series as well as other big titles).

It doesn't help that we are constantly getting very negative vibes from the community just because there isn't the usual free game. There is of course free games still available, but they are not as often as we are used to.

Each to their own I say. If you are dissatisfied with the service provided here, of course it's your prerogative to post your feelings, but please do think of the consequences of a large number of disgruntled community members posting negatively just becasue the goal posts have changed slightly. If I was a developer thinking of giving a game away here then saw the comments made, I'd certainly have second thoughts about giving my game away, especially when there are easier ways of making money from my game (i.e. indie bundles, sales and free game sites like MPC, where I'm almost certainly guaranteed an income). The team are still finding free games; sometimes these may be limited to only 100 community members and sometimes you may have to jump through a few simple hoops that really only take a few moments. If you still want free games, then it isn't that much effort to create accounts specifically for this purpose. You can create a new email for free that can be used specifically for this purpose. You have no need to give sensitive information. Personally I wouldn't, which is why I'm using old accounts set up by my family that have not been used for a couple of years. The Twitter account I have was set up to get free stuff and is not connected to anyone apart from the freebies I've received over the last few years and the Facebook accounts have no personal information apart from our names. my name is extremely common . I've even worked with a surgeon who had the same name as me. :)
