This is really the best game that I've downloaded from this site. Only thing that is missing is LAN play, but everything else is just wonderful.

If you got extra hardware laying around and are tech. minded when I was on "dial-Up" I hook-ed up two modems since at my house my parents had one line and I had another I would use my line on one 56k internal modem and late at night when other phone line wasn't being used I would hook it up to thier phone line and get double speed. It was great. I did read at least one person mention he has dial up and two phone lines so if you have an older computer laying around or just buy a cheap external or internal modem(if you have room in computer) and plug in both phone line this is a cheap way to double your speed. This worked on WinXP Second Edition With MSN Dial up and one internal and one external modem. Also, ppl that say they don't have money to pay for cable or dsl. There is tons of Dsl for as little as 9.95 US and you get 10x speed. Plus if you check around a lot of us spend money on things you can really do without like 3.95 coffees when you can make at home or pack of cigs at 5.00 a pop, if you just check into your expenses you might be surprised, like my aunt says she cant afford it and pays for her daughters dial up but she has 3 phone lines in her house!(BTW, Doesnt need or use em all) I tell here that dropping one line alone would pay for the service!!! But I do feel for the ones that are truly strapped for money or cant get service to them! But I didn't have cable or dsl for long time so I know how you feel! Take care all!

I am more than a little disappointed at the comments written by some obviously deadfully self centered people whose opinions seems to be bugger all the rest as I am all right. My parents taught me very good manners and it's a great pity that yours did not.

I don't know if all of the other dial up users agree with me here but I only managed to download 68% of eXtiction and so missed out on it. Now today we had a lot of phone calls in which cut me off on top of having fallen asleep in front on my PC so today so far have only managed to download 47% of SpacceInterceptor and I really wanted to get this game. I wish that GAOTD Team would give us 2 days in which to download these really large downloads. It's not fair that we miss out just because we can't afford to have broadband or live in an area where it isn't available. Could we please have 2 days for this one and other large downloads? please???

Josh... I had the same problem.

After taking out the Cyclotron, try skipping skip past the Spaceport and do some damage over where the force fields are. You can't miss it. That's the only way I was able to complete the mission.

Or you could just go around taking out defenses and whatever enemies you can pick off before going after the mission objectives. Just keep in mind that once you've come close to your target (if doing in order), the game won't let you stray too far. So, if you're taking on the Cyclotron, you'll have to stick around and get the job done.

When you're told to go to the spaceport, go to where the forcefield generators are and do some damage there first. If you want, go blow some stuff apart around the Spaceport before you head to the Cyclotron to make things a bit easier.

Every little bit helps.

Wow, this game is awesome really. The quality of this free game is unmatched compared to other free games I've played from here. The only huge problem for me is I can't play it windowed (anyone know how to?). That's about it, graphics are great, sound is great, the entire thing is a very professional package.

No need to hurl insults back and forth, guys...

Finished the game. I didn't bother to time how much gameplay I got out of it, but the fact that I got through it under a day shouldn't turn people away. There's plenty of games you can complete in a day, as opposed to weeks or even months. That doesn't make it a bad game nor does it neccessarily make it inferior to titles that are better known.

Some games simply don't work well if they drag on for a long time, and I think this is one of them. I wouldn't mind a bit more, but I don't think I could sit through dozens of missions. Maybe, but Space Interceptor would need more than just more missions to make it worth sitting though a lot more than the 21 missions already present.

The page linked to has nothing on it (maybe it's just me), so I can't tell what other info there might be about the game; it seems that there could be more to the story (there is one, nothing deep but there is more than 'shoot all the bad guys'). If there were a sequel or add-on, I'd probably be interested. Quite frankly, there isn't much as far as replay value goes, aside from playing through on a higher difficulty or porgressing through the missions with a different emphasis on your upgrades, say maxing speed out before defense or attack power.

I had no problems using the default mouse and keyboard controls. But of course, what works for me might not work for you. Yeah, it could have used a bit more variety in the missions (mission 18 was the only variation on the floy around and blast the bad guys scheme), the comments other pilots make and the musis, but it wasn't all that bad. The only negative thing I can find is that the others out there with you aren't a lot of help, at least until you get an assist from "Wonder Boy" later in the game. I wonder if the same holds true on the other difficluties (I started on easy)?

Oh, and a better ending would be nice, too.

All said, this is a decent game. A welcome change from what we can get most of the time here.

:o Wow! This is a cool game.
I left home with my pc downloading due to HUGE file size (again).
Glad I nabbed it because it's very cool at the price ;)
I believe it will take me some time to master smooth flight; but I like it a lot. Worth investing some time in for sure.

#91:
Check your options and see if something is set up to use anything other than keyboard or mouse. Also: If you are using a usb mouse as opposed to a ps2 mouse; you could experience problems caused by incomplete programming within many games and drivers etc. that does not allow for usb mouse as opposed to ps2 mouse. I encounter this often and now use my ps2 mouse for ALL games. If you don't have a ps2 mouse; get one. Re-install before giveaway is over if all else fails. Mine works great :D:D

Help! Whenever the download has 8080 in the address (http://w1.wikisend.com:8080/SpaceInterceptor.zip), as in today's game, I get "connection timed out" or "connection not found" and even "connection has reset." This doesn't happen when no port is specified after the '.com'. When there is a mirror site I am able to avoid this problem, but when there is a large file, as today, there is no mirror link.
I'm using firefox, but have also tried Opera and IE with the same results. I've even tried disabling the firewall. My system is XPsp2.
I'm sure it is some setting I can't fiqure out. Any help would be much appreciated. I've been missing out on some really good games.

"Really appreciating it……but please, could you guys use some compression techniques, so that we, dial-up users cud download it with ease?"

It's already compressed--all the games here are--so the answer to that one would be no.

Nifty little game. Can't recommend Universal Combat as a substitute. While much larger in scope it's also...bad. Won't get into all its failings and will instead suggest the best substitute for those seeking an expanded version of this daily would probably be Freelancer. Surely can be picked up for cents on the dollar these days. Expands on this game with a real story and strong economic aspects, though lacks the ground attack elements featured here.

Well, Now I've downloaded the game, My opinion of it is great!

Just a shame a poor server is used to store the downloads on.

The game itself does'nt involve compete accuracy when shooting at alien ships (which is good with my old eyesight now!)

I found the mouse quite good for controlling the ship, Left and right buttons great as the fire buttons.
Kids prefer joysticks...I used to in the Commodore 64 days but soon grew out of it :-)

Really like the game but absolutely positively can not beat the freaking 3rd mission. I have replayed the first and second so many times trying different ship builds in hopes of getting past it, and I'm on easy darn it, but I just can't do it.

Oh well, would be good if not so hard.

"old skool" you should really just buy a better PC, get a fast (and probably even cheaper) internet connection and enjoy the heck out of it.

Times change and so should your hardware! I mean, come on. We're talking about a 2004 era game and it's not even thát huge in download size either. So really ... the one that should be looking for a life would be you.

Gotta say, this is a great game for a freebie!
The music did become rapidly annoying, though. Turned that off ASAP.
DONT attempt to play this with the mouse/keyboard controls.
Fortunately, you can map your joystick, and this makes things much easier.
Could use a little documentation.
Be sure to upgrade your ship starting with the first mission. Definately start with your defense... hint, hint.

The graphics are NICE! Looks great, handles easy. Not overly complex, but not a simple point and shoot, either. Some of the missions are positively challenging.

All in all, TWO THUMBS UP, GGOTD!

For those of you having trouble downloading the large files -- whatever your connection speed -- get the most out of your connection with a download manager like FDM (Free Download Manager). It downloads multiple chunks of the file simultaneously to get the most out of your bandwidth AND you can resume downloads.

I will admit at home I use dialup, and it is strictly to save money that I can then use to go out and purchase these nice games. However, I do feel the stab that I cannot always download these large games and demos. HOWEVER, there are always options available. For example, I go to my local library, sign on to their computer and download the giveaway, usually averaging 512kb/s. Maybe you have friends that can also download this for you and give to you via flashdrive. If necessary, and you didn't hear this from me, you can wardrive and sit in a parked car at a neighbors house or a local donut shop to download the giveaway.

If you don't get fast speed internet, then you aren't available to this freebie. Similar to how some freebies are extended only certain regions, this freebie only goes to places where broadband is available. If there is no Chick-Fil-A in your state, should they send you a free item coupon? Use your head.

Thank you to everyone at GGAOTD and Merscom LLC.
It downloaded, installed and played perfectly. And the graphics are
beautiful in 1000by700.
My one complaint? I'm at work in the morning and don't have time to
give this the attention it deserves. Sleep calls.
Once again, thank you folks.

Ok, I had to jump in here.... if your in a area that does not have cable/dsl..... and can afford those type of connections, why not get satellite broadband ? yea, the upload speeds suck, but the download speeds are acceptable.

HughesNet offers a suite of connectivity solutions for your home, small office, business or government agency, with download speeds ranging from 728 kbps to 2.5 Mbps

The one thing that prevents me from downloading this game is the following fact

"Only about five hours worth of play"

Hmm.... even the original Wing Commander (which came on a bunch of diskettes, in total 2.8 Mb) had more gameplay to it then that. Now that was a game. True the graphics weren't that good, especially on the PC. Because of the bad port they even were bad on the Amiga. Still, nice graphics is one thing but most importantly is the gameplay. I for one would feel quite jibbed to have paid 19.95 for Space Interceptor only to learn that it can be completed on an afternoon.

As that one review, that Whiterabbit provided the link to, put it:"Are you willing to drop $20 on five hours of unspectacular but fun space shooting with the understanding that once those five hours are up, you'll probably never pick it up again?"

I'm not even willing to temporary bloat my 460 GB HD capacity with it.
Seeing as that they offered it before, it isn't as if they are truly interested in any reviews of it anymore when you keep in mind that it's still the same version as it was way back in 2004.

Hmm, I'm of seeing how and where I can hunt up a copy of the ol' Wing Commander. With a bit of luck it's abandonware by now. :)

Remember to check the posted system requirements. If you are running something less than the "Recommended System Requirements" the game may run but you may not be happy with the performance. I believe someone mentioned earlier, if you don't have at least the "Minimum System Requirements", it won't run at all.

Just a thought...

Even if you don't like "space sims" this is definitely worth a look.

It's not a space sim but a frantic 3d arcade shooter in space sim clothing.

Fantastic graphics but doesn't require a massively powerful PC which is cool.

Some of the dialogue is annoying but you blank it out after a while. If you're any good at shooters you're best off playing it on the hardest setting, or you'll probably only play each level once.

I downloaded it last time it was on here and wasted the best part of a weekend playing it :D

There's a lot of useless discussion about connection speeds above (which helps no one learn about whether the game is well liked - please go to http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums if you have a complaint), so I thought I'd offset it with another review.

I downloaded the game the last time it was up. Excellent game, possibly the best I have gotten from this site. It's not super deep or complicated, but that's kind of nice. It's relatively easy to figure out. It's also usually really easy on the default difficulty setting.

I'm running hardware that was top of the line in about 2002, and the game runs really smoothly. It also looks nicer than games that run a little choppy on my machine. The graphics, combined with the low challenge level when I played it, actually made for a relatively relaxing game. It was fun to just fly around and make things blow up in pretty explosions.

All in all, while there are some fun games posted to this site, this one is a lot closer to retail quality than average. Highly recommended.

49kbps is awfully even for Virgin...Al my other sites download at over 400Kbps.

Huppo (comment 36) I agree totally with what you wrote:

#1 if you’re stuck on dialup it’s really not anyone’s problem but yours. The majority of people have broadband so there’s nothing wrong with larger downloads for most people. Dial up users shouldn’t expect anyone else to adhere to their restrictions. There are plenty of free games made available that aren’t large downloads.

#2 This is 100% FREE! It never fails to amaze me when people have the audacity to complain about things they are getting free! Nobody owes you anything, folks! If there’s something you don’t like about the GIFT you are being offered, just accept it and smile politely. Didn’t your parents teach you any manners?

Especially this last sentence!

Hi Tall, I'm sorry you found the controls unuseable. It sounds like it could be Vista that's causing the problem because I've never played such pleasant space shooter of this genre before that is easy to control. It's a pleasure to actually be able to control your ship and manouver it with ease using XP SP2.

I found my gameplay mirrored that from the videos and I'm no expert pilot in these simulations,

Everytime (and I mean EVERYTIME) we have these Merscom games or some of the other games that are of larger file sizes we get these same comments about the file being too large for dial up users. If you have been coming to this site for some time, you are aware that it is commented on every time at least once. We get it...trust me.

If you can't have broadband because of your location, we are all very sorry for you...we were all there once also and remember what that was like. Just try to enjoy the games that you have been able to download from here. I'm betting you have at least a few of them that you haven't completed yet and they miss you terribly! Go play them...now! :O)

Now could we please get back to the discussion about the game? I'm going to download this as soon as I get home, but I would like to enjoy more comments about the game. Thanks!

I've posted an updated version of my review above(comment #1) over in the forums. There's just a few comments added following my download of the full version that I wasn't able to make until I'd checked it pout as the demo I used to write up the review was limited.

If you need to discuss problems with the game or to make suggestions (you never know, Merscom may update the game sometime in the future) :) Please use that thread for comments if possible. Here's a link to the thread:

Part 2 of my review:

Well, everything ran fine on my XP Home SP2 computer. The graphics and music were fitting and didn't seem to get tiring as they do on some games.

The intro movie ran pretty smooth and looked like a modern space fight game of its kind. The storyline is pretty typical for this type of game: aliens attack, you defend, fight and destroy.

I did the training first to get a feel for the game. The mouse control was jumpy and it was hard to control where I was trying to go. I had to exit the game, restart my computer and shut off any running programs before restarting the game and that made a difference. The controls were a lot easier to handle after doing all that.

With the training done a couple times, I started the first mission. Unfortunately, I couldn't get past the second wave of the first mission. Even with at least 5 other fighters on my team, we were all unable to stop the enemy ships from destroying the ship we were defending. I tried twice and both times failed.

All in all, it's a nice game and I would recommend it to anyone who likes these types of space fighting games. As for myself, I don't have the patience to keep trying after a couple times, so I am going to uninstall this one. I have a couple other games I do enjoy, including eXtinction, which was offered here 2 days ago.

And that's my review for Space Interceptor.

Nice graphics and soundtracks but:
- stupid story
- stupid gameplay, e.g. you have to fight against an infinite number of enemies while destroying some buildings.
- your wings do nothing, absolutely nothing; except saying 3 or 4 stupid comments, after YOU killed a ship which is restored a few seconds later.
- it runs fine on a ULV C2D 1.2Ghz with the Intel X3100 graphics card, but it has some strange graphic failures in the land missions.
- doesn't support widescreen displays
- while playing a land mission you have to destroy some buildings, ok. Enemy ships attack you, ok. So kill them, or? Tz, impossible. If you want to follow the enemy ship you are forced to turn around (your ship automatically turns around) and destroy the building, after you went away "too far" (a few feet) from the builidng. So you are forced to turn around and destroy the building, ok, but, the enemy ship turns around, too, and kills you, thanks. Or you are not forced to turn around, but you just stop moving, until you turn around again and fly back to the building. But you don't notice that you stopped moving immediately, and so, you get killed by the stationary guns.

It could be a good game, with a good story, good gameplay and not so annoying wing-commentaries,
But it's not a good game, not even for free, so I'll remove it, because it just makes no fun to play.
