The Game:
Space Bandits is a playable Shmup, with some challenging levels (though nowhere near as challenging as some of the bullet hell shmups created by Japanese shmup developers), The game is quite short with only fifteen levels, though you'll still get a reasonable amount of time completing all fifteen levels due to the challenge; (the old Shmups from 15 to 20 years ago used to include at least 50 to 100 levels). As with most games of this type, you have to avoid the fire and/or crashing into the oncoming waves of enemy ships that approach you from the top of the screen. Some enemies are mobile so harder to shoot.

As you progress you can upgrade your weapons, gain extra lives (maximum number of lives is five) as well as shields; plus, with the points you earn from destroying ships, you can upgrade your ship. There are four new ships available that you can buy, costing between $50 000 to $500 000.

Whatever power ups are active will be indicated in the left hand column below the information panel that quotes your ships statistics for example the vanilla ship you start with has a speed of 300 with an acceleration of 2000 and a deceleration of 1500. Watch out for non ship or power ups that occasionally drop down as these will destroy your ship if you collide with one. It only takes one hit from an enemy or a crash to lose a life unless you have the shield power -up active

You are able to move around the arena using the WASD or the arrow keys. To fire your weapon use the space bar.
Conclusion:
Space Bandits is one of those games I keep for coffee/tea breaks; the reason why, because the game play is quite repetitive after playing several levels. That said, being able to survive a few levels does give some feelings of achievement and I like the graphic in this game so will be keeping it. I'll probably buy the Steam version (hoping it includes more levels).
Shmups, especially space themed shmups are one of my favourite arcade genres (Breakouts and Tower Defence being the others).

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 59 antimalware engines.

The downloaded executable for installing the game 'may' include some low level adware that only opens your browser once to Falcoware's home page after the game has installed and also places four shortcuts onto your desktop (these can be safely deleted once the game has installed with no effect on the game).

The installation DOES NOT inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to Falcoware's home page following the games installation, it earns Falcoware games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away for free. Once you've installed the game, there are no more browser redirections. This is because Falcoware removed their installer almost two years ago (that installer would show an advert for a game while the game was loading (which always took about 20 seconds to ensure you'd seen the advert). It would also always open your browser each time you closed the game after playing it.)
If you're still not convinced of the games efficacy and want to be absolutely sure that the game is safe to install, please use a sandbox program first, to check that the game is safe to install before installing it to your C drive or other drives on your computer (assuming you have more than one drive).

Personally I've never had any issues with any of falcoware's games, even when the Falcoware installer was included.

There are free sandbox programs such as Sanboxie, GeSWall, BitBox, Windows Sandbox, Bufferzone (a six month commercial license was given away via the applications side of the project back in December 2009 HERE), Shadowzone, as well as others. (You'll find them all on the same page from Techwhoop.
You can see the results of the installed games scan via the following link:

Whiterabbit-uk,

Free or Discounted Games:
Please check Delenn's threads over in the giveaway forums HERE (non-Steam games) and HERE (Steam games) for the latest freebies. It's kept up to date frequently, (thanks for keeping this up to date Delenn, very much appreciated). There are a lot of sites that now offer free games such as TooMKY games, MyPlayCity games, Gametop, FreeGamePick and others. One of my favourite's that has been around for around twenty years is Caiman's Games, where you'll find thousands of freeware arcade games covering almost every genre I can think of. You can find Caimans games HERE. The site used to be updated every week, but since the founder of Caiman's, Rudy Versele's passing on the Feb 3rd 2010, it's been kept running, but not updated by a colleague of Rudy's. There's a wealth of freeware games that can be found on the site that are well worth checking out.
Steam Games:

For the latest Steam sales check THIS Steam database site out. You can list the games in 'price' & 'percentage off' order by clicking the headers. If you link SteamDB (the Steam database) with your Steam account, all games that you already have will be highlighted in green and those in blue are on your wish list. When there are Steam games being given away, you'll see the percentage off as 100%. It's worth checking this regularly to make sure you don't miss the best deals and freebies.

Now available for free is The Wild Eternal an atmospheric walking simulator that the developer has converted to freeware on Steam, so there's no time limit to grab it as it will now always be free. :) Also converted to freeware back in February is Roadclub: League Racing - a top down racing game, that I purchased just before the developer made it free to play (I wanted to support the dev).

Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation and Tales from Candlekeep: Complete Edition are being removed from Steam from the 20th May. They are both on sale until the end of this week.

I don't know of any other outlet that sells any of these games, but, if you still wanted any of them, you may be able to find keys on the various sites that sell Steam key, but there's no guarantee that any will be available. If you've purchased any game that is later removed from the Steam store, you will still always be able to download and play it via your Steam library despite it no longer being available via Steam; that is unless its one of those Massive Multiplayer Online games where the only access is via the developers servers and no single player elements. Once the developers no longer support these MMO's (Massive Multiplayer Online) game and close the servers down you can no longer access the game. (e.g. Defiance, Guardians of Ember, plus loads more).
Indie Gala:
Don't forget to check Indie Gala's freebie section HERE, then click on the Showcase header, selecting freebies from the drop down menu; the most recent additions include:
1) ... Vroom Racing (Drive a Formula 1 car upon 18 worldwide tracks : Reach 380 Km/h and beat the ghost !)
2) ... Project Restart (An anime visual novel, two versions English & Portuguese)
3) ... Beefense ... (ReRUN ... Tower defence game.)
4) ... Lamp Head ... (NEW ... The protagonist of this game is a strange man who needs to breach out of the darkened and dangerous odd place at whatever cost..)
5) ... World's Dawn ... (Re-Run ... a colourful life and social sim set in a sleepy seaside village. Inspired by the Harvest Moon series.)
6) ... The Adventures of Tree ... (New ... This game takes you on an open ended adventure to save your fellow species from the evil invaders!)
7) ... Age of Steel: Recharge ... (Re-Run ... In the near future the world is consumed by the great crisis. The resources of the planet are to end, the traditions mean nothing anymore. It leads to many wars, one after another - places where one could live in peace and not worry about the fact that he can be shot immediately were almost gone.)

Check the freebie section for the latest additions; if you've not visited for a while, also check the Showcase section for older freebies. All or most new freebies should be on the first page of the Showcase pages. We have been given over 350 games since I started to check the freebie section in 2018. But around 60% of those are no longer available free.

The following recent freebies have now been removed from the free library: King of Dragon Pass , Control Craft 2, Grab the Bottle, Super Toy cars, Cursed Sight, Pixel Puzzles 2, Spring Bonus, Little Kite, Last Dream, Unhack, Trainpunk Run, Pixel Puzzles 2: Paintings, Hamsterdam, Copperbell, Chainsaw Warrior, Leisure Suit Larry 2 Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places), Leisure Suit Larry 1 - In the Land of the Lounge Lizards , Figment, Pixel Puzzles 2: Space, Revolution Ace, Six Sides of the World, Byte Family, Alone on Mars, Garfield Kart, Nostradamus the Last Prophecy, Snowball, Pixel Puzzles 2: Christmas , Die Young (Full version), Distortions, Dino Run DX, Cheap Golf, Kill Em All, Dead Hungry Diner, and Contract with the Devil.

Any game you claim while it's being offered is DRM free and will remain in your Indie Gala library permanently (unless Indie Gala goes bust) and can be downloaded at any time, under the showcase or freebie section; 118 games are still available. Not all games that go into the showcase remain free and are removed after a short period; e.g. the recent adventure puzzler Figment that costs almost £15 on Steam; so, you should grab them as quickly as you can. To find your games go to your account and from the drop down menu select 'My Library'. When the page opens find the 'Showcase' button in the banner along the top of the page and, from the drop down menu select 'Showcase'. There are only 8 games per page, so, if like me you have added hundreds to your account/library. Each page from your free list can take 30 or more seconds to move to the next page so it can take a good twenty minutes to get to the last page depending on how many of the free games you've claimed.
CD Keys:
Another decent site that you should check out regularly is CD Key HERE. They have some very good discounts on top notch AAA games for all the popular platforms (PC, PSN, Xbox, Nintendo), sometimes as much as 99% off. The following examples may change, so not all prices quoted may be valid. I update the following occasionally. for example you'll find Madden NFL 22 is only £0.39 (usually £49.99), Grand Theft Auto V Premium Ed' 84% off (£7.99), Sims 4 85% off (£5.99), Star Wars The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition £1.79 , Dying Light Platinum Edition 92% off (£5.29 - includes 22 of the paid for 26 DLC's, with a further 11 free DLC's available.), Assetto Corsa 83% off (£3.99), Borderlands 2 GOTY Edition 91% off (£2.99), Civilization VI Platinum Edition 91% off (£8.99), Cities Skyline 90% off (£3.09), Hitman GOTY Ed' 92% off (£3.99), Sniper Elite 4 83% off (£6.99), Stellaris 99% off (£0.19), The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series 86% off (£5.49), Battlefield V 85% off (£7.39), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 89% off (£0.79), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II : The Sith Lords 89% off (£0.79), Planet Coaster 83% off (£4.99), Injustice 2 92% off (£3.99), Kerbal Space Program 85% off (£4.49) this is included in the Stand with Ukraine bundle, Fallout 3 GOTY Ed' 80% off (£2.99), Fallout 4 91% off (£3.49), Tekken 7 90% off (£3.99), Garfield Kart: Furious Racing 92% off (£1.09), Dawn of War Franchise Pack 97% off (£3.19 usually £99), Assassins Creed: Unity 91% off (£3.49), Naruto to Boruto Shinobi Striker 95% off (£1.99), Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Deluxe Edition 86% off (£9.99), Outlast 2 90% off (£2.39), The Escapists 2 85% off (£2.99), Battlefield 1 Revolution 87% off (£7.99), Sniper 2: Ghost Warrior 2 89% off (£0.79), Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 Season Pass Edition 96% off (£1.49), Elite Dangerous 84% off (£3.99), Killing Floor 2 89% off (£2.29), Lego: The Incredibles 93% off (£2.49), Lego: DC Super Villains 93% off (£2.49), Resident Evil Biohazard 90% off (£4.99), Resident Evil HD Remaster 87% off (£3.19), Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 91% off (£4.99), The Evil Within 92% (£2.49), Metro Exodus Gold Edition 83% off (£9.99), Shadow warrior 2 90% off (£3.59), Warhammer 40 000 Space Marine - Anniversary Ed' 93% off (£2.99) plus many more amazing deals.

Be sure to check that keys from CD Keys are redeemable in whichever country you live in (it details where it can be redeemed) as prices and the ability to redeem keys in particular countries may differ. I've quoted prices from the UK pages of CD keys. I recently got an Origin key for Star Wars: Squadrons for 99% off, costing me £0.34; it usually retails for £34.99, I also got 32% off a pre order copy of Dying Light 2 a couple of weeks before it was released in February, saving around £20 off the release price.
Epic Games:
This is your last chance to grab two comedic games from Epic Games; i.e. Just Die Already - an old peoples mayhem sandbox game, created by the designers of Goat Simulator. You are old and angry and you've just been kicked out of your retirement home. How will you survive in a world that wants you to Just Die Already? (remember David Carradine in Deathrace 2000, it's nothing like that). Also the single player Paradigm - a surreal adventure game set in the strange and post apocalyptic Eastern European country of Krusz. Play as the handsome mutant, Paradigm, whose past comes back to haunt him in the form of a genetically engineered sloth that vomits candy

From 4pm UK/11am Eastern today we will be getting Terraforming Mars - Corporations are competing to transform Mars into a habitable planet; you control one of these corporations. Play project cards, build up production, place your cities and green areas on the map, and race for milestones and awards!
Indie Bundles:
The best Indie Bundles sites that have been operating from around 2010 are the Humble Bundle and Indie Gala sites (though the latter isn't as good as it used to be, with most of the bundles containing cheap stocking fillers and a lot of 'adult only 'hentai like ' games). The Humble site is, in my opinion, the best; though a more recent addition that is worth checking out called Fanatical games, that used to be called Bundle Stars, looks to be a serious contender for that title as they have some very good bundles. Presently Fanatical hosts nine game bundles as well as other software and book bundles
Mystery Egg Bundle
Staff Picks Build Your Own Bundle
Platinum Collection: Build your own April Bundle
Handy Games Anniversary Bundle
Build your own Hidden Gems Bundle 2
Build your own Easter Bundle
Guardian Bundle 7
You can find the Fanatical bundles page HERE.

Subscriptions to the Choice bundle have recently been changed, levelling the ground for all subscribers. The monthly cost is a meagre $12/£8.99 with other benefits such as access to a lot of indie titles for free while subscribed and a percentage off other purchases from the Humble store. This discount increases the longer you stay subscribed up to a year with 20% off all none bundle purchases. (1 month sub' gives 10% off, 3 months sub' gives 15% off and six months sub 'gives 17% off).

The latest Humble Game Bundles include the following:

You'll also find Books and Software bundles on the Humble project HERE as well.

The Groupee's group also do game bundles HERE, but they don't have any available at the moment (just a book bundle).
Free Game Project:
I've restarted a project I originally started back in 2008 that used to be called Good Games to Grab, where I posted free games over in the forums on a daily basis; however, I won't be posting them daily this time, only as and when I have time and the inclination. You can find the new forum section entitled 'Free Game Project' HERE. So far, I've posted eight excellent PC games, plus one android game as well as suggested or linked to others similar to the ones posted. I'll be adding more as and when I have the time or the mood takes me over the coming months.

Amazon Prime Gaming:
If you have Amazon Prime you also get access to a new set of free games every month. The May freebies include the following full games:

Dead Space 2 (Origin Code)
The Curse of Monkey Island
Shattered - Tale of the Forgotten King
Out of Line
Cat Quest
Mail Mole + 'Xpress Deliveries

plus loads of add-ons for various games like League of Legends, GTA V, Warframe, Two Point Hospital, Smite, New World, World of Warships, Assassins creed: Valhalla, Runescape, Dead By Daylight, Destiny 2 and many more.

Stay safe everyone.

pnj,

Because of the opiate meds I'm on (Fentanyl patches and Oxycodone), even a glass of wine goes straight to my head. Just a few shots of whisky and I am sick. Miss some spirits (got a cupboard full of spirits including various Vodka's from my relations in Poland)

Whiterabbit-uk, Am so sorry. To live with chronic pain is a horror. Am wishing that someday, somehow, relief will be for you. That you carry on as you do, and supplying us with your interesting reviews and otherwise going about as normally as possible, is a great honour to you.
