Nice one Ben, I joined the comp, with the intention of doing exactly as you have done becasue i purchased the game when it was released last November (got it as a beta initially; it wasn't officially released on Steam until early last month.. :)

Awesome! I won one of the Steam keys for Solar Division! I did not want to try, seeing all the negatives about Steam.

But I trust Whiterabbit so I installed Steam and tried for the game, and won a key. I am exploring Steam, and although I would rather own the games outright with no client lime Steam, times are changing.

I first thank Whiterabbit for all his hard work and moderation on the GGOTD site. Having moderated a site before, I know it can be frustrating and thankless at times. You do an excellent job at moderating and have convinced me on many games in the past, and not just here at GGOTD.

I also thank the GGOTD team for finding the games throughout the years. I know it is harder and harder to find free games and I thank yoy for the new inovative ways you are trying here to get us games.

And thank you to the developers and distributors for supplying all the games through the years. I have downloaded many games and have been inspired to purchase many others.

I want to apologize to Whiterabbit, the game developers, and the members of the community. Although I have taken advantage of many free games, thereby saving hundreds of dollars, I have neglected to post reviews of the games or offered feedback on what I liked, disliked, or would change on any of the games. Because of this lack of participation, I take my part of the responsibility in the loss of games given away here. I believe that our lack of feedback and constructive criticism, along with the incessant whining, complaining, and negativity has driven away those companies and game developers we used to see here regularely.

So again, thank you Whiterabbit, GGOTD team, and all the developers. Please don't give up on GGOTD. Even if we don't see as many games given away or given away in new limited or inovative ways, thanks you, thank you thank you!

Nice to hear you won a key. If you like Tower defence you'll like Solar Division. There are a lot of good free games ( not the free to play that although free to play usually require you to purchase dlc to actually stand any chance of winning or having a good experience. That said, there's loads of free single player games. you should be able to find various sites, Steam groups etc that list the free games that are available. Plus, if you go to the Store and select the Specials time (scroll down from the Stores home page about halfway down to find the games section, then once the specials tab is open, scroll to the bottom of the list and click on where it says see more spcials. Once you've done this you can filter the gaes to bring up the cheapest games first. you'll be surprised to find loads that cost less than a dollar. A lot of the cheapest will be dlc's which are recognisable by the pink diagonal stripe in the top left hand corner. At the moment the cheapest deals are only £0.29p and there are 771 games on sale with almost 150 games and dlc's costing less than $1 (approx £0.69p, and many of which have up to 90% off the usual price). :) If you explore the Steam client you'll find loads of features that can enhance your gaming experience. If you want to send me a friends request my Steam name is Whiterabbit-UK. Let me know your Steam name though as I get a lot of requests from people asking for free games (because I have thousands of games they think I'll give them some)so have stopped checking the requests unless someone has let me know via other means.

First, please read everything I have to say before judging what I mean. This isn’t a rant about Steam, but contains some suggestions.

Though I haven’t contributed to much of the discussion on the topic of the Steam keys and contests, I’ve been following them. In doing so, I wanted to offer some suggestions. Those are coming, but I’m going to start out differently.

One of the first things here is I won’t bother with the Steam keys. I don’t want them. While I’ve seen both sides of that argument, I’m not interested. I wouldn’t ever buy the keys and I don’t like the longer, more complex games. The only shooter games I play are like Plants vs. Zombies or the Chicken Invaders series. My idea of a tower defense game is Monster Mash or Garden Defense (another shooter type, but that’s as close as I come to them). I’ve had Steam and Origin and don’t like them. They just take up space on my computer and are bloatware (especially in the case of Origin). I had plenty of games on Steam I procured when they were given away and never played them, so no point in having it on my system. Why I mentioned this is very simple; we have our reasons we don’t want these forms of software and people should respect this.

Don’t try to force it on us and keep in mind you are losing plenty of people who don’t want this in an effort to do something. Then deleting the comments of people who rightfully voice reasons and stats against Steam is shooting yourself in the foot. How do I know this? Very simple; I’m an author with one of the smaller online only publishing houses. In being this sort, we are the ones who do almost all the promo’ing and publicity for our books, pushing them, not the publisher, so we know a thing or three about how to do this and get people to engage AND review.

First of, what I don’t think anyone has noticed when it comes to the editing and deleting of reviews is it’s already being mentioned on WOT and taking down your rating on it. WOT is more than for just dangerous sites that contain malware or virus, it’s also for the trustworthiness of sites and their reputation. When your rating goes down, you get hit. This is mentioned in at least one review of this site and the other for software. When sites like that mention it, it’s spread beyond to others. Then you’re LESS likely to end up with the reviews you need to keep getting the games and software. And, as an author, I can honestly tell you that if you delete or whatever with bad reviews, you’re hurting yourself. Those bad reviews always contain something you should probably listen to, whether you like them or not.

I’m not talking about the ones who use language not permitted on the site or obvious spam, but complaints about what is being done. These are the people you need, folks, and by not listening, you’re hurting yourself. Keep in mind, while you need the developers, you also need the people to download and review. Without the later, you won’t get the former. The arrogant stance of not listening to the reviewers about everything from how this is done to the complaints about the change in the visual aspect of the site hurts you, period. They are your lifeblood. If you alienate them, you don’t get anything from the developer end. People don’t like change, this is true, especially with the formats of sites and making them more complex, but the reasons mentioned were something you should have listened to. You didn’t and ignored everything said just like you have with everything else we say. This is hurting YOU, period. Not the ones who download the games, YOU. The ones who download can easily go elsewhere to get games for free. Remember that.

Next up is a suggestion. I do understand the contests are a way to draw people. However, from experience, you’re doing it wrong. What you all mention, repeatedly, is the lack of reviews for the games especially. In the giveaway the way it’s going for the keys, it’s not going to help. You’re going to get very few, if any, reviews for those keys. Which means it doesn’t help you. There is another way to go about it that will not only get you the reviews you and the developers want, but build an audience who will review. Give those keys to the ones who do review. Toss them in a pool for a drawing then give them to those who give GOOD reviews after a random drawing. I don’t mean the ones who leave the simple good or I like it, but real reviews, good or bad. While you can keep the contest for the others, this way gives you the reviews you and the developers long for and might end up with you getting more of the games. Then, to help more, give them a choice!

When we do book giveaways, we give them a choice of the ones they want. In doing this, it not only gets them out there, but gives us an idea of what is working and what isn’t. The same when we do gift cards. Most give a choice of Amazon or B&N. When you do this, you take into account the numbers of entries and which ones they want. If people lean more towards one than the other, you know this is probably where you should focus what you do and the bigger audience. In your case, it could be a Steam key vs a game download like normal. Doing so would show you and the developers what is more popular. It helps all of you.

The next suggestion should be a no-brainer, but it isn’t, apparently. You ASK what you can do to help garner reviews or make it better. Doing it arbitrarily like you have is causing the massive revolt and headache you now have. We do it as authors, asking what the public wants. While most think we just write what we want then publish, it’s not the case unless you’re an indie that self-publishes. In those who sign with houses, we have to go by THEIR rules and what THEY want. One example is, unless you’re writing horror, most want a happy-for-now or happily-ever-after ending. These are what sells. In the age where the smaller houses are competing with the powerhouses like Amazon and their self-publishing empire, we know we have to listen. Amazon takes a huge chunk of plenty from us, which means we need to LISTEN TO WHAT THE READERS WANT. You, in turn, need to listen to what those who come here want, not dictate to us how it will go. While you have a product some want, you will lose them if you don’t at least consider and lean towards pleasing the ‘customer’. If you don’t, you lose from the developer end. That is now showing. And I don’t see it changing unless you do something to make it change. We would lose sales if we decided to go back and write romance like was done in the mid part of the last century rather than what the market wants when it comes to romance now. Very few would engage with an author who does so. As you don’t have the following and web presence of the bigger ones in this area thus able to just ignore what the customer wants, you need to bend. This you aren’t and it’s causing you issues.

Another suggestion is engage with those who come here. That, again, should be something you do, but you don’t. On this page, we have WhiteRabbit who does an excellent job of engaging with us. When you get the software developers on the other page engaging when the giveaway is going, they do better. It’s time for the people who own and run these pages to do the same without the attitude we’ve been given and being condescending. Again, from an author’s standpoint, if we treated our readers this way, we wouldn’t make sales and would destroy our careers as some have done, especially if you’re not one of the well known ones. One of the things we do is to talk with our readers in various formats by setting up various venues for it, like on FB, Twitter, whatever. Not forums or such, but ensuring we engage to hear what the readers say and get feedback. All of you from the end of those who run this site should be doing the same rather than just stepping in, deleting comments you don’t like and copping an attitude with us. You will go further if you listen and engage than if you just turn your nose up and run things the way they have been.

Another suggestion for this part is give away games for those who do engage and for the best reviews or suggestions. This will encourage the engagement and have people step up what they do when it comes to reviews or comments. It should be easy enough to get a limited number of games to give away for such. You will quickly get the engagement you want when you do such things. And actually listen and possible change when it becomes apparent the suggestions are excellent and people agree with them. There are other contests as well, such as contests for best suggestion about what sort of site changes are needed, what kind of games people want and such. These are easy. And they have people engaging.

While this is long, far longer than I intended, it’s not all the suggestions, just the basics. If you actually ASK without dictating, people will engage with you and suggest more. Keep in mind, those who come to these sites come from a wide variety of lives and careers. They may well know plenty more than you do about such areas. While I don’t know software, I do know a great deal about how to get people engaging with you and to review. What people like me know can only help you, so you have the potential for help if you tap it.

Just my suggestions, nothing more.

Thank you for your feedback DaMyst. I won't be repying to all of your comment a this time as it's now well after 7am and I've still not been to bed and am exhausted. What I would like to say is that WOT is not the best site to consider when deciding whether or not to visit or trust a site. I was a firm supporter of the site when I first discovered it about 10 years ago until I realized their system was subject to abuse. With respect to the giveaway site being mentioned in a negative way over on WOT for deleting comments from this comments section. So far, the only comments that have been deleted by me are ones that have inappropriate language that is not acceptable here. I usually only delete the actual swear words and leave a small comment giving reasons for deleting. The other week, some scomments were for the first time deleted in their etirint and a couple of community members had their IP's banned becasue they were spamming words that were just not acceptable on a family site. that is so far the extent of deleted comments here. No comments chatting about the changes have been deleted to my knowledge. If people are voting down the giveaway site for deleting such comments it just goes to show how frail the WOT system is because it's just not true. If community members believe the WOT rating, and decide not to download a game because they believe the site to be unsafe or untrustworthy because of the WOT rating, then they are missing out on free games that are safe to download. As I've mentioned many times, since the game giveaway site started giving games away early December 2006 there has never been a game given away that was infected with Malware. There was one program given away over on the main site a few years ago that did include adware but the team did not realize at the time as the adware was not found using their proprietary anti- malware programs probably because the programs had not been alerted to the malware yet. I remember installing the program and was really shocked when I found ad's popping up, my home page hijacked and tool bars installed. Quite a large proportion of the community were also infected. The giveaway team did post an apology once it was shown to be true, but this has never happened here on the game site.

I asked the community a few weeks ago whether or not I should start editing out posts that do not concern the actual game. This comment section is afterall supposed to be about the games. For years most of the comments made here have not about the games and especially since the site had a revamped three months ago. The average number of appropriate comments made here is ridiculously low compared to the number of downloads. I've already quoted 200 000 downloads for every comment that gives useful feedback to the developer. Would you as a developer giving games away to a particular community give other games qway if ytou only got one suitable comment from 200 000 downloads? What i mean by suitable comments are ones that give you useful negative or positive feedback and maybe include suggestions that would improve the game or add to it. I've been asking the community for years to post such comments. There has been a very tiny fraction of the community that have responded and to them I'm really grateful, but with such insignificant numbers (statistcally speaking) it's a wonder anyone is giving a way free games (

The other thing I would like to answer is that no one is forcing Steam on the community. Because of a lack of games recently, the team have found other ways to give games away. They are Steam keys, so a section of the community are not interested in installing Steam. That's their and your perogative. Personally I am all for Steam. I have no problems with it and find it a very useful platform to keep my games in some sort of logical order. I have memory problems and if you asked me to list all of my games on Steam I'd barely be able to list a 100 or so of them out of the almost 7700 games I have on Steam. I'm able to categorise those games easily, which helps me to find particular games that I can no longer remember the name off, plus I am able to install mods to many of my games via the Steam workshop with just a mouse click. When you say it's bloat ware, I find that laughable in these times of massive hard drive sizes. My main compouter has over 14 Terabytes of hard drive space plus another 14 Terabytes of external hard drive space, so installuing Steam is taking up an infinitesimal amount of hard drive space. 10 - 15 years ago I would have agreed, but not now. Unless your computer is ancient, most community members are going to have at least a terabyte of hard drive space or more.

Please don't take offense to my reply. I'm extremely tired and just want to get some sleep before the new game goes live in less than 1hr 30 mins, so haven't really thought out my replies to your comment very well. I've been up all night answering comments and compiliing information together for Sundays game.

p.s. your idea about earning keys for reviewing the games is a very good suggestion and I really hope the giveaway team take note of it. I've neve rliked the idea of Facebook or Twitter. Unfortunately being a volunteer I have no say in the matter. By the way, what is your development house called. I would like to see what games you are creating. Regards

There are still what i call traditional giveaways, but gradually we have lost many of the developers who used to give us games. Yes, it's no longer game giveawayoftheday, but to change the name would impact the site becasue with this name they have a very good standing with all of the major search engines due to the fact that over the almost 10 years they have been operating they have never given away a game that was infected with malware. Personally I think we would still be getting a wide variety of games from lots of different developers if only the giveaway community had put more effort into leaving appropriate feedback on the games we have been given for free. Instead only one comment out of 200 000 downloads has been left woith any real useful feedback (that;s just an average. Whenever I post a request, the onstructive feedback does rise a little, but when you consider that thousands of community members never even bother tpo post a thank you for the game each week, I can see why many developers no longer want to give away their games to what to all intents appears to be an ungrateful community. This is only my opinion.

There are a lot of good people out their who have over the years left suitable feedback, and I also realise some community members have very busy lives so don't have the time to leave feedback, but surely, with thousands of community members downloading every weekend we should be getting a lot more appropriate feedback about the games we get?

Wiuth respect to your comment, contest of the day, we have been getting the odd game that is restricted with respect to the nuber of licenses that are available, which is why the site asks you to jump through a few hoops. This effectively separates those that download just for the sake and may not actually be interested in the game from those who actually like the genre that is being given away. The giveaway team have had to find other sourses of game becasue of the lack of traditional giveaways recently. I've been here since the inception of the game giveaway site and this has to be the bleakest period with respect to lack of games I've ever seen. At leas tthey are trying their best to bring us games that are not plagued with toolbars etc. :)

I am not interested in this kind of competition - I am just too lazy to care plus there was never a game through competiont by now I was interested in.

I understand why it is like it is and am happy when we have a normal giveaway for a game I like and I am even happier when WhiteRabbit gives us a brief description so I know I am interested or not.

I've put the comments below on the GGOTD forum, but am copying them here in the hope that they may help alleviate some people's concerns:

I'm a long-time user of GGOTD and have also been sorry to see the changes that have happened this year.

However, rather reluctantly I installed a game some time ago that required me to set up a Steam user. Then I followed a really helpful post from another person on this forum that sent me to a Bundle of games for a very low price (needing to be loaded via Steam). I can say that I've not had any problems at all using Steam - apart from the odd time when it needs updating when I switch my computer on - and that can happen while I'm eating my breakfast :)

Since setting up my Steam user, I've also purchased another Bundle of fantastic games (I'm a real HOPA addict) for a song, and have not had any problems either with my PC, my antivirus or anything else.

So I honestly would say that anyone who is worrying about setting up theirselves on Steam shouldn't be concerned. OK, it comes up with "achievements" etc, but I've just ignored them.

However, I have noticed a decline in the types of games offered on Game Giveaway of the Day recently, and I do worry that the site owners may have been shooting themselves in the foot with all the changes. Hopefully all will sort itself out soon.

As with last weeks game, there has been an unprecedented response and I don't have the time to reply to every comments tonight. The giveaway is live for 7 days, so I will answer any comments that require answering before the seven days are up. Good luck to those that have entered.

I played the game yesterday to remind me how the game played and thrpughly enjoyed the game play. If you are a fan of Tower Defense games, and don't mind installing Steam, this is well worth entering.

To those that are not interested in Steam or this game, but were hoping to get some games this weekend. check out the Weekly Round-Up of Game Deals over in the foums HERE for some excellent deals on games. Most of the game bundles do include Steam keys, but a lot also include drm free versions of those games.

I can understand people not liking the competition (I am not a fan of it myself, especially all the enforced sharing). But I don't understand the aversion I have seen the last few weeks to Steam in general. I have several Steam games (not through game giveaway). Once you install them, you don't need to interact with the Steam interface (although you can if you choose), they run fine off the computer directly from desktop or start menu icons. Steam isn't more annoying than any other game vendor in terms of its interface (and is actually less annoying than Big Fish Games). One of my favorite Steam things is that they let you know when one of the games on your wishlist is on sale. Steam is one of the very few sites where I feel safe paying money for games.

I never win these offers, so I'm not going to waste time trying. In effect there are no free games this week. I'll try a few more times but if this is going to be the case every week then there is no point in continuing to visit here.

While free games here may be a thing of the past, for anyone who wants cheap games, I suggest installing Steam (which is a good system) and keeping your eye on Humble Bundle, Indiegala and Bundlestars. For $2-$5 you can get several games in a bundle, sometimes better ones with fewer hoops to jump through.

The site isn't replacing the game giveaways with Steam keys and having to jump through hoops to get them. They have just added a different way to get free games; partly due to developers no longer giving their games away as frequently as they used to. We will still be getting the games we are used to, just not as many. That is unless everyone gets what I've been trying to say for the past several years. I used to post a couple of paragraphs at the end of my reviews every week until the site changed in February, imploring the community to post constructive comments about the games we were getting, but out of the thousands of community members that visit every week (sometimes as many as 40 thousand) we never got more than 1 constructive comment for every 200 000 downloads. No wonder developers want to give them away here.

I agree with you Barry, there are loads of bundle offers going on all the time now, (and it's one of the reasons I believe games have dried up here). I've listed the main ones (and linked to them) in the Weekly Round Up of game deals over in the game discussion forums. Other bundles that are usually live and have either/or Steam keys and DRM free versions also includes (as well as the ones you listed) Groupees Bundles , DIG, IGS, Otakumaker, The Flying Bundles, Game Bundle, The Super Duper Bundle, Coinplay, Play injector, Games Rage, Lazy Guys, Orlygifts and several others.

Well ........... I DO understand the hardships faced by the Giveaway team, I really do. I am not opposed to buying games either. I just this week bought Kings Smith II from Big Fish as its an old favorite of mine (first gotten right here on Gamegiveawayoftheday) and there's a few others I'm looking for (to buy) that I've either gotten here before or heard about here. I've learned about a few developers that I can be assured of having quality products on a consistent basis. I'm looking at you Playrix, Alawar and Stars Ashes among a few others in that regard.

But I'm afraid that this new model for the site has passed me by. I don't have a FB account or a Twitter account and will not have them. I dis-like the concept of Steam/Origin etc. and want no part of them either so it looks like my options for free games here are going to be quite limited from now on. Sad, but it looks like its going to be just a fact of life and I'll get over it.

I wish there was another way for the site and the game developers to thrive and prosper. How about ......... oh.... say .... instead of totally "free" games we could get discounts on games and/or bundles from the developer? You know...... a trial version or time limited version (days or weeks instead of hours) that we could buy at a steep discount if we really liked them. Example : A time limited/trial of Royal Envoy good for a week. (Its on sale at Playrix now for @ $13.00) that we could buy for .... I don't know, $5.00 say. Or a bundle of all the Royal Envoy games for $20/25. I'm sure the marketing people and the bean counters could come up with something they , you , and us could all live with. Sprinkle in a few totally free games when you can get them and I'm thinking this might be a viable way to go.

Well, I'd like to add a positive and beneficial comment here but I can't really critique the game without playing it. My family likes indies ( tower defense games are pretty high up on that list), we'll play it if we win and I'll come back and comment again if that would be helpful.

I "won" Rabiez Epidemic a couple of weeks ago and I had Steam before I won and the game does not start. I have downloaded a couple of times. All I get is a window that asks if I want English, fullscreen, V-Sync for 60 hz monitors and Steam Cloud. I have tried all the combo's possible. It never starts the game. My other Steam games work easily. I will enter for this game but I have to wonder if it will even start.

I completely understand that it is hard to get developers to giveaway their games. if i were a game developer i would be iffy about giving away games here if i saw the comments people are leaving. people need to realize that the developers aren't obligated to give their games away for free to us. they give the games away out of the hope people will buy their other games. i have also noticed game prices dropping very soon after release and even before release too.

I think the point that several people are trying to make is that there IS no true giveaway listed today to move on to, only the competition. Both the email and this webpage are advertising only the Steam competition. While the comments about the difficulties that GOTD is having in getting truly free games sound fair enough, the Steam competitions are not all that helpful to those of us who do not want to join Steam, or those of us who are not active on Social Media. Like the poster above, I do not have (on purpose, and will not be getting) Facebook or Twitter accounts, and to be honest, referring friends, who will then be cursing me for more spam in their inboxes is not an attractive option. That sounds suspiciously like the techniques that pyramid schemes use (there is an advantage given to anyone who is willing to cough up info of their friends and relatives so they too can be harassed into joining), and a shoddy way to treat people I like. I suppose I could "refer" my employer, but I doubt it would be appreciated, and I rather enjoy having a job. There are several free games for phones, but that is of little interest to some of us. If you think, as some posters have implied, that we are stuck in the dark ages for not wanting to join Steam, just add that some of us still see phones as a method of communication, not of entertainment. As well, some of us, due to vision or coordination issues, find a phone's display and controls difficult to use for games.

If GOTD truly can't get access to free games anymore, that is sad, and nothing to get angry at GOTD about. What seems to be creating the anger is the expectation of a free game when your email arrives, only to find that there is nothing but a competition available.
As some have pointed out, at least the competition allows some people to end up with a free game, but it is a far cry from the way the site used to operate. Perhaps your site should be renamed to reflect this; something like "Steam Competition of the Week" would appear to be more accurate, and would give the non-fans of Steam fair warning of what to expect.

I really don't get all the negativity leveled at GGOTD. If you like what's offered, great! If not, just move on. Easy.

ok - after a little bit of reading - it looks like steam / valve corporations treats its customers even more worse than MS and / or Apple together.

They have all the rights and the enduser has only the right to pay! Nothing else.

I would just like to thank you for hosting this giveaway :) It looks like an awesome game and I love tower defense games, and although looking through the comments most of the people seem negative about it, I just wanted to let you know I appreciate the hard work you put in to get free games for us. Hopefully I'll get lucky, if not, it's not that expensive to buy.

Honestly though to the people complaining, I can't comprehend your attitude to gotd. If nothing, it's rude, they're just trying to help provide you with entertainment (for free I might add), and yet all you can do is complain, whereas I'm pretty sure all of you could probably afford a cheap game. I didn't want to say it but, please, just grow up. Negatively rating a game before you've even tried it, purely because its on steam and because only 100 people can get it is just plain rude. If anything, I'm more inclined to try this game out because its on steam, (purely because I'm lazy and just like downloading it through steam).

Well, considering that it's 8 am on the East Coast in the US, and I am just getting up, I suspect that the 100 codes are already given away to those in Europe that are 5 or more hours ahead of me.
I guess I'll look at what the other offer is. Since there was nothing yesterday, it's all I have to look forward to.

If you want DRM-free, go to sites like Playfish, Big Fish Games, etc, there are plenty of choices. But lets not get into the same old DRM versus drm free debate.

Okay, I will be nice, and I will praise GOTD, and I wont criticise (lest I become blocked from even viewing the listing of games that arent available. This site has become a Kingdom/dictatorship and you are not entitled to receive free games (to test). I will be greatful and humble for you permitting me to even look at the superior technology and advertising on this site. But, I will never again use facebook, twitter, or any other "social" site, and I hope that you acknowledge that right, and my right not to be insulted as a human greedy person.

Let me see if I can win a copy of this game. ***WAIT*** I am not on Facebook, there I have just lost +5 points, I wont be joining this "hot air" group, there is another +1 point, I am not on Twitter, there is another +2 points. I already subscribe to the newsletter so I won't get +1 for that and I cannot recommend to my friends, some are pushing daisies, some cannot see and those who can see, either don't have a computer and if they did, they wouldnt be interested in playing a game on it. So let me tote my odds of winning ... a BIG fat ZERO.

Steven (I trust you are the Mod today ...) I really do appreciate the extent of the efforts that the GOTD team go to, to get games but cannot get my head around "how difficult it is" to get a game. Every single day the GOTD team are able to get one or two regular software downloads every single day, some good others trash, but by hook or by crook, they DO IT. To me it is incomprehensible that GOTD can get the software so freely and yet it is SO DIFFICULT to get a free game. How is this possible????
Let me give you my take on this. With every subscription or person joining STEAM, this increases their cut of profit they derive from the author of the game when any game is sold to a person. It also increases the revenue they derive from all the advertising they offer to advertisers because of the increase in subscription (feet through the door) they can boast about.

Hi Barry, there are far more software developers out there than there are game developers. Also unlike software prices, game prices have fallen dramatically over the last several years, leading to many indie developers closing down and even forcing well established AAA developers to sell off their assets; for example, THQ, who created some great FPS games such as Red Faction Guerilla as well as excellent strategy games such as Company of Heroes and other games for example, the Saints Row franchise and the Dawn of War series, as well as the MX vs. ATV series. Sadly they had to closed their doors 3 years ago. The developer of the Bioshock franchise, 2K/Irrational games were forced to sell their last entry into that franchise for a knock down price (after discounts I got that AAA game for less than £16, plus I also got three other AAA games thrown in). Every game distributor was offering these discounts if you pre ordered the game; so a game that should have sold for at least £30 or more was sold off for half the price, plus if you took into account the cost of the other games, it was virtually given away. That game Bioshock Infinity crippled the developer and ultimately led to their demise as a game creator. Shortly after the games release the developer went bust.

Gaming has become a hard business, partly due to the proliferation of easy to use game engines (you can now buy or rent several cheap engines via Steam). This has led to a massive explosion of indie games being released, which in turn has knocked down the price of games significantly, added to that the constant sales of games, especially ones that have only just been released has lead to minimal profits for most developers. You can now pick up a short, but reasonably constructed indie game for $5 and even less than a dollar. With overheads in the hundreds of thousands for established indie houses and millions for AAA game developers, this has been a disaster for the industry. So to has the increasing number of indie bundles that can contain up to 12 games, many of which have only recently been released. These bundles sell with at least 90% off the release prices of those games. (Just before THQ closed their doors, they sold off their entire recent catalogue of games, worth over $400 for a measly $5; sadly it wasn't enough to save their company); so for a developer to give away thousands of games with virtually nothing in return except the possibility that some of those getting the free games will buy other products from them must be hard to accept. Would you give away thosands of dollars worth of games, epsecially if you were struggling to pay for your next game? Many development houses are shedding their staff in droves. I backed a game called The Dead Linger on Kickstarter a few years ago. It was finally released as an early access project on Steam two years ago. They have just announced (last week) that development on the game, which is still unfinished has stopped and they have had to lay off some of their team. I purchased another early access game on Steam a couple of years ago called Star Forge. The development team made lots of promises, that in the end never materialized. Late 2014 they announced development had stopped. I see it all the time now. At least 20% of the 150 plus games I've backed on Kickstarter never made it past the alpha stage. I rarely bother to back any games now as the industry has become too unstable.

Please keep the comments coming. For those dead set against Steam, please just move on to the next game giveaway. The team have found it increasingly difficult to secure free games, so they have found new ways to get them. Okay, those may come with some restrictions, but that is better than no games at all (IMO).

Zotrix have opened the wormhole, again, close to your deep space network of stations and station York was pulled through the wormhole. Luckily you were able to jump through in very last moment. Close to a distant planet you are approaching towards the station York and soon you realize all the crew is missing, including its commander. Aliens are approaching and you are in command of the defense system for the station. This is where your adventure as main strategist starts.
