The Game:
At this point, trying to draw a distinction between Alawar’s hidden object games is sort of like a theological discussion about angels fitting on the heads of pins. Apart from that one, weird interlude where they decided to make a hidden object game without hidden objects, in general the same things could be said for Snark Busters: High Society that you could’ve said for Sacra Terra: Kiss of Death, Mountain Crime: Requital and Twisted Lands: Shadow Town.

What does that mean? Well, for starters, it means you have thoroughly mediocre graphics, comically bad voice acting, and a storyline that you’re probably better off not thinking about too much. The plot follows the developer’s tradition of starting off normal-ish enough (an evil socialite has made claims about an innocent man!), before veering off into all kinds of supernatural weirdness. Basically, if you’ve played any previous Alawar hidden object games, you know what to expect.

It also means, though, that you can expect some decent hidden object scenes while you’re at it. In fact, in this respect, Snark Busters: High Society does seem to mix things up ever so slightly. Rather than giving you an image and a completely unrelated list of things to find, this time out the hidden objects you’re looking for serves a purpose within any given scene — so, for example, finding robot parts leads to a robot being built, and that robot will then do something that helps you move forward in the game. I know that cause-and-effect has been one of the building blocks of storytelling for a couple of millennia now, so it’s the kind of thing you’d probably take for granted by now, but it’s still neat to see it deployed in one of these games in a way that makes sense (compared to, say, looking for a playing card and a guitar at the bottom of the ocean, or something equally nonsensical).

There are also straight-up puzzles. They aren’t challenging, to say the least. I mean, I’d like to think I’m just getting really good at them, but the reality is you should be able to solve them with a minimum of difficulty if you’ve ever played any game like this before.
So, moment of truth, is Snark Busters: High Society worth picking up? I think you already know the answer to that. If you’re not a fan of hidden object games, then I can’t imagine that plot-driven hidden object puzzles are going to be what suddenly wins you over. If, however, the words “plot-driven hidden object puzzles” sends a shiver of anticipation up and down your spine, then yes, you’ll want to download this yesterday.

common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced several years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try whitelisting the setup.gcd file. In the almost 11 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.

The first thing I would suggest you do if you encounter any issues is check your Event Logs via the event viewer; most issues will show up in the event log and can give you a clue as to what or how the issue occurred. If you find such logs and don't know how to 'decipher them, please do post them here and either I or other technically minded community member will try to help.

If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found 5 hits (Zillya, Sophos, SentinelOne (StaticML), Yandex and Zoner) from 59 antimalware engines. Most of these are commonly seen that often tag MyPlayCity Games from all the others; most of which are better known and more reliable, 54 other antimalware engines found the installed game safe, so it's very likely to be a false positive.

The downloaded executable 'may' include some low level adware that opens your browser once to MyPlayCity Games home page after the game has installed and also places a few shortcuts onto your desktop; these can be safely deleted once the game has been installed).

The MyPlayCity installation does NOT inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to MyPlayCity's home page following the games installation, it earns MyPlayCity games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away free. The giveaway version of MyPlayCity games version has had most of the adware disabled.

You can see the results of the scan via the following link:

The latest Humble Choice bundle unlocked on Tuesday 5th October last week; If you have the original subscription before it changed from the Humble Monthly to the Humble Choice bundle you get 12 games plus a DRM free indie arcade game called The Groundz (Set in a Oakland, CA circa 1993, The Groundz is a street dodge ball game where players smash on each other at Parks and Rec's and Youth Development Centers all across the city. Smash on opponents in a 2 vs. 2 with friends) and access to all the games in the Humble Trove while your subscription is live. The Humble Trove includes around 75+ titles. The DRM free titles you can download and keep forever. The other games in the Trove can be downloaded and played while your subscription is live. If you suspend a month you lose access to those games for that month. They are adding games to the Trove virtually every month. Here's just a few examples of what's included in the Trove. Race the Sun: Challenge Edition, Zodiac II, Volantia: Kingdom in the Sky, Shady Knight, 20 minute Metropolis, Keyboard Sports, When Ski Lifts Go Wrong (this is £14.99 on Steam, you get the DRM free copy, so can still play it if you suspend your subscription). Also includes Valhalla Hills (another Steam game worth £7.99, but you get the DRM free version), Broken Sword 5, Runestone Keeper, Bomber Crew, (another DRM free copy that is £14.99 on Steam), Drawkanoid (£3.99 on Steam), Actually quite a few of the games in the Trove are also on Steam, but you always get the DRM free version.

There are different subscriptions available, details of which you can find HERE.

If you subscribe, it doesn't tie you in to buy every monthly choice bundle. If you find the latest bundle isn't for you, just go to your account page and suspend that month. This has to be done for each months bundle if you don't want them before your subscription is due for that month. Apart from the amazing bargains found with these choice bundles; there is always at least one or two premium AAA games, plus several other AAA and high level indie arcade games included in each bundle.

This months bundle includes Amnesia: Rebirth, John Wick Hex, 112 Operator, Guts and Glory, Ring of Pain, Garage: Bad Trip, The Textorcist: The Story of Ray Bibbia, Tools Up, Hiveswap FriendSim, Black Future '88 and Syberia 3. (Not as inspiring as some of the previous bundles, but most of the games are still excellent.

If you come across any free games either permanently free or temporarily free that you think are worth downloading, please do post details and links in Delenn's threads HERE (non-Steam) and HERE (Steam). Thank you in advance.

The following link HERE takes you to the Steam Database where you can find all the games that are on sale via Steam. You can create lists that select all the best deals and often include over 200 games with 90% off. i.e. click on the % and Price headings to get the best 90% deals; for example at the moment you can get the excellent Battlefield V for £5.49 with 90% off. There's also a Battlefield bundle that includes Battlefield 1, 4 and V that is heavily discounted at 92% off at £10.40 (usually £127.97). All three games have an excellent single player campaign, plus a decent multiplayer mode. You can also get Battlefield 1 and 4 for 88% off each if you already own Battlefield V; though you may find the bundle is still the best option.

Finally, you'll find quite a few games in the Microsoft store for free HERE; e.g. Clash of Irons: Blitzkrieg, Tribes Warfare, Roblox, Crash of Magic, 8 Ball Billiards, Bike Stunt 2, Pac Man Cat, Brain Test: Tricky Puzzles, Lightning Speed Car Race, Cave Golf Master, Superbike Hero, Marine Empire: Warship Battles, Asphalt 9: Legends, Microsoft Mahjong and over 980 more.

There's a non game offer on Steam for Movavi Video Suite 18 with 90% off; (the usual price is £65.95, but with the discount is £6.59).

Whiterabbit-uk, Hey hope you are doing ok. So I have been having trouble trying to connect to MyPlayCity and I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. Don't check them often but was looking for a game about a week ago and can't connect to the site. The message I get is:
An error occurred during a connection to myplaycity.com. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Since I can't get to the site I sure can't report the problem. Could you give it a try and see if you can connect? That was the first site I found years ago for games even before I found this one and I have been here since 2010 or thereabouts.

Played this game a long time ago. The HOAs are a bit better these days but this one is pretty good as I remember. Am with another poster, they are relaxing to play and no hurry up and shoot something or somebody. Guess I am just to old for the hurry up stuff LOL

Hey Wabbit,

Snark Busters are always good games. I am not a bit fan of Hogs but I like these . So thanks for the giveaway.

Did you see this Wabbit???

The main game is just a dollar and the rest is less than 20 bucks..

I know you like this game so this is a good chance to get the DLC's you don't have.

Huggles to you and the family...

delenn13,

Hi Delenn, yes, I saw it. I've already bought everything for that game apart from one of the Trophy lodges. It's a brilliant bargain at £11; though I don't regret buying the original game as the 2019 version and the rest separately over the last year at full price. I've already clocked up approaching 500 hours of game play which easily is worth the full price IMO.

Anyone interested in hunting games TheHunterCall of the Wild is a really good game with twelve different reserves to explore, each one covering at least 16 square miles of reserve.

Downloaded, installed and activated. No errors. It gets as far as Alawar and then goes to the MyPlayCity website.

Jeff Benham,

Hi Jeff, All games from all free games sites will open up to the site after installation. This is the way that we get free games that are usually sold via other commercial sites like alawar, Gamehouse, Steam etc. The redirection to their site earns some advertising revenue, part of which is paid to the licence holder/developer of the game.

Nothing is injected into your system, i.e. it is fully self contained within the installed game and will never affect your system.

Did you actually get the game to work?

Reply   |   Comment by Whiterabbit-uk  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Whiterabbit-uk, Maybe I described it wrong. It never gets as far as the game. As soon as it opens to where it says Alawar, it reverts to the website.

Jeff Benham,

Hi Jeff, I've not come across that issue before. Check the installed folder and make sure you've created a shortcut from the 'games' executable. Hopefully that will sort the issue out.

Jeff Benham, hi .
Did you try to set compatibility mode to Windows XP ?
Many times (in my experience ) , that solves the problem ...

Jeff Benham, Apologies. When I opened it, it went directly to the task bar and I didn't see it. It works fine.

"As soon as it opens to where it says Alawar, it reverts to the website."

*Maybe* the game's crashing, and it goes to the web site because that's what it's supposed to do when you shut the game down? Event Viewer might or might not help. It might be asking your GPU to do something it can't, or maybe your PC/laptop is trying to do something the game asks of Direct X 9, and you don't have it installed, or maybe it just doesn't like the game's display resolution? JEDIGEG's suggestion of XP compatibility mode, or one of the other compatibility option might help.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - if you've never played hidden object games before, the Snark Buster games are a great introduction!! I had tried a couple over the years, but found myself giving up on them, because I didn't know how to move forward. The mini puzzle games were good, but if I couldn't get past some scenes, or figure out what I was supposed to do next (even with a hint button!) I rarely got to the puzzle games. So, I was downloading, then within a few days, deleting. Enter the Snarks! Just hard enough to enjoy a challenge, but not so difficult as to frustrate and give up. Once I'd played a couple of them, I again tackled some of the other HOGs and was able to complete a few!

I love these Hidden Object games, not only because they are so relaxing to play or that they do not require you to "Be fast with the shooting iron" but also for their well-made graphics. It's a pleasure to sometimes stop and just look at all the funny motifs and pointy details.
