To the developers.

Nice game but a few bugs.
1) You don't need to build ships evenly as it states in the rules.
2) The roulette is only once contrary to the rules.

Things that should be changed.

1) The fee for boarding is too high. Should be lower like 25 or increment on each turn sart with 5 and go up by 5 each time everyone has a turn.
2) The number of available ships is too low. It would be nice to have an option to change the number or set it to limitless. You could also have an option for having a limit for each player as opposed to a limit for everyone.

Wow, a rare mistep by Alawar. Basically, it's monopoly-lite with a pirate theme. Maybe if they made it differnt and more complex than the original, it'd be interesting, but it's a just a dumbed down version of the classic, so what's the draw? I just don't understand why they even made the game. Thumbs down but I still love Alawar and look forward to trying other games they produce.

Alas, I have to agree with many here--I like board games, but this one is too simplistic and not fun at all for a single player against the computer. The premise was cute and if you play it with other people, it might be more fun. If you REALLY want a monopoly game that has a twist and action, find a copy of Monopoly Tycoon (probably in the bargain bin, but well worth it!)

I would like to see other board or adventure games from Alawar though--I usually like their games.

I would love to see a fantasy board game like this... maybe a Runebound clone or something!

Meh, Monopoly with a couple alternative boards. I'm surprised that this game was accepted by Alawar, which has had only great games here earlier.

Try some other decent, free board game conversions once you're bored with playing Monopoly again.

Yes this is a version of Monopoly, and a very fun one at that. Although there are many similarities, there are also differences (apart from the obvious graphics) in the game play, for example, when you land on a square that someone already occupies (and even owns), the boarding rule applies, in which it is regarded that you have overhauled the ship you have landed on and therefore you get a bounty. Any lover of monopoly will enjoy playing this game. There are four boards called Fantasy, Golden Beach, Island of Luck and Highlands. Each has its own particular style, and in no way looks like the typical monopoly board although the first, called fantasy, which is also the easiest to play is a clockwise four sided board, that’s similar to the traditional board for this reason only. Each board has a different number of places to capture, buy or land on and apart from the four sided fantasy board comes in some unusual shapes.

The fantasy board is the smallest board with only 20 landing places which is smaller than the traditional board by about a third. Golden Beach is the largest with around 45 (larger than the traditional board by about 50%) places to land on and the other two have around 30 places(about the same as a traditional board).

You can play with up to a total of six human players or I human and 5 computer opponents, or a combination of each. I didn’t particularly find the computer opponents totally ‘thick’ (an anthropomorphic analogy that is silly really, lol) as they offered me places that were part of the group I already owned; lol, maybe that is a stupid move, hehe, although I do agree that they don’t have the strategies employed by a human player. I’d be surprised if they did though as then real computer AI would be a step nearer being realized. Of course this would be much better played with human players and with that in mind, if you like playing board games, I think this is an excellent version to own, especially if you do play lots of board games with friends and family. The advantage over the traditional board game, being that you don’t have to tidy up the pieces after you’ve finished the game and no one has to act as banker. :).

I have taken quite a large number of screen captures showing you the different help menus and some in game shots, which can be seen by following the links below.

There is nothing particularly special about the game. For example there are no animated sequences that you get with other board games such as Risk II, where, whenever a battle ensues there is an animated sequence depicted. Still the absence of animations does not detract from the game play whatsoever (IMO).

I give this game 8 out of 10 for family playability as well as its general replayability. Nice one Alawar and the Game Giveaway team. Something a little different (but traditional) from the usual puzzle, match three; shoot ‘em ups and arkanoids. Thank you. I may just get back into playing ‘this version of’ monopoly as I’d become bored of the traditional UK version of the game :) It will give the family a little time to play some more games together for a change rather than in isolation on a computer; although we still ‘try’ to play lots of board games weekly at least.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve also uploaded all the images to my Filefront account as a zipped .rar) file. You can download it and use it as a reference for the family until you get used to the differences this game has from the traditional versions. If anyone wants me to prepare an indexed word doc with all the images, just let me know via my Email which I posted last week. It will only take me about 30 minutes to prepare a document with the necessary hyperlinks from the index to the images. (Probably work on it tomorrow though if anyone requests one)

For the zipped image file follow the link below:

p.s.
Sorry this review is so late. Besides oversleeping (went to bed about 5am after watching Apocalypto – a fantastic film for those who haven’t seen it), I have had visitors.

This won't rank among my favorites, but to each his own, I always say. The important thing is playability and quality, not whether Joe Blow likes it or not. And Alawar has been consistent in distributing quality games for a variety of tastes. Thanks GOTD and Alawar!!!

Indeed Arjen. I'm with ya chap. 8 POINTS!

Sure a monopoly clone, but a dandy one at that. Nice twist. I would have liked to have seen a bit more intelligence from the computer as an adversary though. I'm used to cut throat politics from a business world environment in my daily life. This game leaves me wanting more. Well back to the campaign trail!

Thx GOTD! You guys rock!

I like the Alawar games, and this one is a good one too. So in a scale from 0-10 I give the program 8 points.

It might be a copy of monopoly but the different maps make this game good. computer opponnent seems to be dumb, best played with friends or your kids. a nice way to pass time, this is a casual game and a good way to waste time with other human players around. monopoly has only one board. this one has different layouts so its kinda interesting. Works on my Vista Home edition.

you play it like monopoly but can be boring if you play against the computer it might be less boring if you have a human player.

yes it is a simple monopoly game with a sea theme twist. It was ok to waste about 15-20 minutes to play the game and win. That is about the whole of it. I did install this on vista premium and it worked great, with no problems at all. I will keep this as a simple quick game to pass a few minutes with, when i dont have time to get into a more invovled game.

I agree a total clone of Monopoly. I tried playing on two different levels with a computer player and found it to be very boring. The computer player presented no challenge. It was like they weren't even there, except to pop up occasionally and ask if you wanted to make a trade. (There seemed to be little strategy programmed into that. The trades seemed almost random, a human would strategize.)

It might have been more fun if I had a human opponent, but it was boring against the computer. Also, a little dizzying watching the pieces zip around the gameboard. I never quite knew what was happening to my opponent at times either.

I wouldn't pay $19.95 for it, I've already deleted it in fact.

Monopoly clone. Maybe if it was only inspired by Monopoly but with a different twist, it could be a good game. However this game is too close to Monopoly to be interresting. I prefer to play the real game rather than a lame copy.
