For some reason I could only see about half of the post. Is this something on my end or was this on purpose as a teaser?
...........................Moderator comment............................
Hi Travis,
It definitely wasn't a teaser. Don't know what could be the problem. Maybe try changing your screen resolution. If that doesn't work I would try the version available from http://www.Gametop.com They have changed the name to offroad Racers, or more likely renamed it for the gamegiveaway. The game is a commercial one; however the developer will get money for allowing their game to be given away via Gametop.

I think it must be the overload, because I can log in just fine now. Plus, they answered my question about the "folder permissions" and apologized for answering late (tho it was just the next day), so now I'm set with everything. So just keep trying; or email them, and they seem eager to help, if you just can't sign in.

I downloaded the game saturday afternoon, and have spent the last 2 days trying to get logged in to play.
I keep getting new updates from the site when I launch the game, but when I try to log in I get "Error- server not responding."
Is this a glitch due to the number of people who are new signing on or just an overall foul up?

My first download was registered (I think?) but still had the $19.95 price for the full version. Plus, no troops. Just downloaded again, but ran into a snag while the game was updating with a patch... said the last critical file could not be downloaded, and to "check my folder permissions." Wrote to Saga support... hoping to get an answer before the giveaway time is expired, but not hopeful for that. Or perhaps they can help me get everything, as I did download and register within the time-frame. Waiting to see at this point.

Hi all
HOORAY, after downloading, registering , patching hitting play produced ZIP/NADA. I read as many comments as I could about game and XP on this site and Saga forums and finally one hint mentioned:
.NET Framework 2.0 SP1 (x86)
when downloaded the file is called: NetFx20SP1_x86.exe
After running the update the game finaly launched and I got to tweek the display settings. As it is now 10pm in Toronto and my bedtime I won't get to play it untill later.
I hope this still helps some late owls (sorry it took so long)
P.S. As the last post shown is from 3:56pm this probably won't be posted till Monday.

For those who cannot activate the game under VistaHP, start the game as an administrator and then try to activate using the serial key. Failing which check your Anti-virus or firewall software.
Hope this helps.

#72... I doubt this could be zipped/rared down to a 50 MB size, and the patcher is going to have to download stuff after it's installed anyway.
I haven't been playing as much lately, although that's due to a number of issues, not related to the game. Things have improved a lot since the initial offering; in general, things are more balanced, there are some a couple additional cards for each faction, plus there's now a sixth faction. The game looks noticably better, but you won't mistake it for the latest and greatest big name titles, but it does not need to be that slick-looking. There are still some issues at times, but the developers are quick to try to resolve them.
Last time I logged in, they were getting set for World Conflict - it's been a few days since then, so I don't what - if anything - has happened yet. If they're still preparing, this might not be the best time to bring new players in, as certain things have been altered for the time being.
For those who picked this up before and want to take advantage of this offer, you are allowed two accounts. One of the reasons why Silverlode asks for personal information is help enforce this, trying to make things fair (pvp, rankings, market). If you have a bunch of people living together and they want separate accounts (since only one Nation per account can be "active" at a time), if you contact support and tell them your situation, they'll work with you. As for upgrading a free account, I'm not sure if this can do that. Other offers elsewhere have given a promotional code that can be used on the Saga website, which I used to upgrade one of my accounts (the other, I paid for the registration).
It takes a bit getting used to, but if you can get by the learning curve and not get upset that it's not DX10 shiny, you might like it. Of course, if you're convinced that it's a demonic game and the sort of game that cause violence, your mind's probably already made up about Saga.
And no, you don't have to pay a dime if you don't want to, and updates will come to you as for anyone else. Despite what GOTD's pages say, this isn't treated quite the same way as other offerings. One account is the same as any other, registered or not, regardless of where the player got it.

Dawn, have you tried updating your graphics drivers and defragging your drive. If you've not dome that for some time it can cause programs to crash, especially if their files are spread out over the whole of your disc.

And why would anyone on dialup (I'm on dialup) want to download a game client that says it requires broadband to play it? I couldn't download 400 megabytes, anyway.. not even in 2 days, even with my download manager. Dialup has gotten much slower since I started using a computer 10 years ago.. and downloads have all gotten much much larger. My connection is taxed just loading over-sized over-complex webpages.. with Flash and animations that often never finish loading. Just saying.. I've downloaded and enjoy playing some surprisingly good games from here that were less than 40 MB to download, so I'll just wait and hope for more of those.
Thanks, anyway

A couple questions:
1: Can I install the version of Saga being offered today and then use the screen name I chose the first time it was given away here at GAOTD? (I installed Saga the FIRST time it was offered here and created an account, but lost it due to harddrive failure. And I would like to use the same name/account I had back then). Because, if I try to create an account this time, with the same name, obviously I will be told my chosen name is already in use!
2: Could the screenshots at the Saga website be increased in size?
For some reason the largest screenshots are only 555x300 instead of 1024x768 or some other more commonly used screen resolution when running a game.
Thanks GAOTD and the makers of Saga. Happy Holidays to you all!! *<:-)

Ok, so I started playing this game when it was given out with 10 free boosters but on a trial account in ?March? I think. I soon realized that you had to have a registered account to trade on the market which was going to be the primary way of gaining decent troops if you didn't want to spend money buying them at resellers or buy the cheaper quality common units in the computer market for gold. Because you could have 2 accounts, I got 2 and registered them for $20 each, getting the 20 free boosters overall then with the giveaway. My biggest problem with this game is that it can easily become addictive, especially when you play it enough to actually make money on it (which a fair number of players have done). Besides the $40 to register 2 accounts, I spent another $30 to buy 10 "Undead" boosters before that faction (a 6th faction) came out a few months ago. So I've spent a total of $70, but then through questing and using my game economy for resources and trading a lot in the market, I actually got enough units in the game to sell $250 worth to a reseller (there are a few such as www.sagaunits.com, www.sagatraders.com, www.sagalegions.com, and www.ccgarmory.com); and I still have 3 nations full of good units (several hundred dollars worth I'm sure). Of course, this was done over the past 10 months, and don't expect to make even minimum wage on it, but when you can play a computer game for fun and make money, it's double the fun. You can have up to 2 accounts and 5 nations per account (6 factions available now). Your nation can get up to level 35 and units up to level 10. In the current promo (as the filefront one had, though I've heard that it got pulled recently), besides the usual common units, you get a free full unit of decent faction-specific troops for each faction, which is easily worth $10+ per faction on some factions, though you can't trade or sell those free units. The difference between a registered account (as gotten here) and a normal free trial account always available is that the registered account can do PVP (though you can co-op quests or scrimmage with trial), can join guilds (for bonus resources and friends), and can trade units and resources in the player market (the most important reason to have a registered account). The game does have its share of glitches but the features, looks, and glitches are continually being improved by small patches every couple weeks. See https://www.playsaga.com/saga_index.php for more info on patches, new additions (including hero units starting this coming Monday), etc.
So, that being said, get this game if you have a little time to try it, but be careful not to get addicted if you can't afford the time. Send me a note in the game if you like by sending a message to Macho Machines. Have fun!

Sorry, but is there really no future updates for free? Does this mean the online account must be paid when an update of the game is available? It normally doesn't hurt much for the casual games but in case of an online game the agreement about it, as given above - sorry, but that's a bad joke to offer an online game for free when the offer expires after the next update anyway.
Quote:
1. No free technical support
2. No free upgrades to future versions
3. Strictly non-commercial usage

I've played since the beta! this game is awesome! Sweet deal here too! Even though the troops are bound they are some of the better troops. You can get quite far on just the troops in this deal. Highly recommend to download and play! I've never done any of the PVP stuff and only played solo. I have a level 27 nation. You can buy packs to add additional units and spells if you chose to. Give it a try, hey after all its free from GAOTD!

Hi Richard,
Assuming that the slow downs you’re experiencing are when you are playing against other human players; I'm wondering whether it’s caused by other players connections. I used to play several games online such as America's Army and Men of Valor. If any player connecting to the server had a large PING, it would cause everyone playing that game to experience lag. If the person with the high PING disconnected, the lag stopped.
PING; put in layman’s terms is a measure of the resistance between the server and the player; or better still, the time it takes for a signal sent from a computer to a server to return back to that computer (much like the ping from a sonar scope); the longer it takes, the greater the resistance, usually caused by a greater distance between the computer and server. You can test the PING between your own computer and the server you are playing on by following the instructions detailed below:
You would have to ask other players to do the same to find the culprit. (Older games like Men of Valor automatically calculated each players ping, so that you could set parameters that would kick those that exceeded a specific ping, though I've not seen any recent games that do the same thing). If anyone was found to have an excessively high PING, it would most likely be them that was causing the slow down. At which point the best option would be to ask them to leave, or connect to another server (if one is available). (It may be that the player has connected to the server from the other side of the world, which would give then an excessively high PING). Low values are typically less than 30, averages below 100 and high above 100. It’s when you start getting above 150 or so that problems with Lag can occur. Of course these figures are qualitative as it depends upon a lot of other factors such as the internet traffic at the time, your computers specs (to a small extent), your own broadband provider and whether you go through several relays or less, plus the game you’re playing and the quality of the server you’re using and also the number of players. Those on dial up are more likely to get lag, but not necessarily so.

I started this last time it was offered. SAGA is great, but the site can occasionally have slow response and even disconnects during combat. That being said, I have made it up to level 15. The game involves fighting, building, and trading.
I'm a little peeved because the amount of troops in this offering is much much better than I got when I signed up.
It is possible to buy troops with real money. It is more fun to try to horse trade your way up. So far I have not parted with any real money to play.
Even with a slightly laggy interface, this game is well worth the effort.

As Ben said above there is a free promotion for SAGA going on over at Filefront, which is actually a long term thing which will last until May of next year; (It started back when this was last given away and has been available ever since); however there is a difference. You only get the free account which is what we got the last time this was given away; what you don't get with the free offer over at file front is the bonus troops.
You can read about the offer by following the link below, but you can't access the offer at Filefront at this moment as they seem to be having problems. The Filefront search engine is down and all internet links to the offer only take you to the Filefront home page. It will probably be worth checking out ilater though f you miss this weekend’s offer.
http://www.gamertell.com/gaming/comment/free-saga-at-filefront/
Anidem, comment #32, I appreciate your opinion; however, this is not the same offer that we got last time. We got the fully registered version which allowed PvP matches, spying, and trade with other users, and the formation of guilds. But we didn't get any bonus troops. That was from the first time it was given away and those were not transferable because you were not allowed to trade. This offer appears to be a combined offer.
I won’t be bothering to take up the offer myself though. I still have the second offer installed, but never play it. (It's probably time for me to delete it actually) I'd much rather play GTA IV , Fallout 3, the new COD, Oblivion or even my old copy of Battlefield 2 with all it’s modifications – (you should try the AI-X mod). :) Still, I really think this is well worth downloading if you aren’t as weighed down with games to play as I am. I’ve been revisiting an old favorite of mine recently called Cossacks. You can build far prettier cities than with the SAGA game and the massive armies you build (with literally thousands of troops and many troop types) cost you nothing but a little time. Also there’s a massive single player campaign, a freeform campaign where you set the land parameters etc and then of course there’s multiplayer for those who like human opponents. The enemy AI can be really hard if you set the difficulty on high. Check out the following video’s. Each one shows a different aspect of the game:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oRnuffKyxws
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cFHMOZnauuQ
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_8-VBXTrJ_Q
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxoDLlJMKZI
With respect to today’s game though; despite its poor interface (IMO) and dull looking colors and bare scenery, it’s got some original elements that I think make the game worth playing if you don’t have many other games. Though to truly enjoy this game you’re going to have to spend a long time earning gold so that you can buy more troops or fork out those little packets of money that soon amount to a lot. (Which is one of the reasons I don’t want to get involved as I see it as a rip off in the end – that’s just my opinion though – these guys are trying to offer a service and make a profit at the same time as most people are). Just the price of one or two booster packs would buy you Cossacks II Gold that includes the two later games Battle for Europe and Napoleonic Wars, though my favorite is Art of War the first one. I got the Gold edition for £3.33 the other week as my original copy is in Polish which I don’t read.
