A simple runner game.

Installation:

Ruthless Safari downloads to a 6.2 MB zip file that unzips to two files, (a set-up file and a read me). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed if you wish. The installed game is approximately 6.89 MB in size.

Five shortcuts are installed to the desktop, four of which can be safely deleted . If you want the games shortcut to be installed to the desktop, make sure the appropriate checkbox is checked. Even if this is left unchecked you will still get the four internet shortcuts installed to the desktop; (i.e. Falco Space - Online Game!, FalconLine Online Games Website, FalcoGo WebGL Games! and Free Games Downloads!). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure the appropriate checkbox is unchecked when the 'additional task's window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window).

Introduction:

The game's plot is straightforward and Ruthless Safari takes place in the desert where our heroine decided to take a picture of a lion on his head after the blinding flash, the furious animal rushes in pursuit of it, our task is to run and time to jump over obstacles such as cactus. Every encounter with cactus leaves our heroine without one set of clothes, and then leads to death. How long you will be able to avoid a terrible fate, depends on You!

The Game:

This game isn't some new indie darling. It isn't the new Binding of Isaac or Minecraft. It's just an endless runner that's been stripped to its bare.

The soundtrack which just loops is actually very well made. The loop kept me engaged and was very well composed. It's definitely on the level Jetpack Joyride with its tunes. That's no joke. I'd actually be glad to have the song in my music collection.

The game looks boring because there's not a single endless runner that is actually interesting to watch. They're for the player. The simplicity allowed me to wander into my thoughts and give me a chance to recover from all of the other games I've been playing. Games like Mount & Blade, where every wrong decision could screw up hours of progress and Ziggurat where the meta is supposed to be followed and being perfect on harder difficulties is a must.

The graphics are simplistic. The UI is robust and the animations are actually very smooth for something this small and cheap

It's not perfect, but it isn't aiming to be. It didn't aim high and because of that managed to do everything it was required of with quality.

There is no need for movement contols, as the game automatically makes the female protagonist run from the lion. All you have to do is jump over cactus after cactus, for up to 100 kilometers. :)

Conclusion:

Ruthless Safari is a very simplistic runner game with only one control key. The music loop becomes mildly annoying after a time, but can easily be turned off. It's not the best runner game I've played, but for free and playing for short periods between other more challenging games it's a keeper for me. I would not recommend paying full price for it if you decided to purchase the Steam version. I've seen better runner games on Steam for less. See the end of this review for a sample of free and paid for versions of runner games.

There are loads of runner games available via Steam or GOG, the following (most much cheaper that today's game giveaway when comparing with the Steam version for example Frost runner (Free), Brave Knight Runner (on sale £071/$0.89/€0.71/₽27), Alpha Runner (on sale £079/$0.99/€0.79/₽29), Beta Runner (free), Impossible Runner , Captain the Runner (on sale £0.39/$0.49/€0.39/₽15). I recommend the following. They cost more than the Steam version but are far superior; I Hate Running Backwards, Supralympic Runners, BIT.TRIP RUNNER and BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien.
