Game Giveaway of the day — Rubicon

A famous recent puzzle is Rubik's cube. It did not really begin it's infamous popularity until 1981. Solving this puzzle involves both sides of the brain as you must be able to previsualize spatially the final result while you remember where you've been in the sequence of rotations. Though a very difficult puzzle, it is a good exercise for brain flexing whether you accomplish the final result or not. Game include classic Cube 3x3 and Cube 4x4. Also added Piramyd 3x3 and 4x4.

I agree, this is a game that needs to be held in your hands. I need to be able to twist and turn much to much. The computer makes it very hard to do this.

I also found that to turn a segment of the wheel you do use the mouse buttons as the help file states, but the trick is, that you have to hold the respective button down to make the move!!! Took me a while to figure that out! Duh! Without having played the game much, I would have to give the game an enthusiastic thumbs up, now that the control issue seems to be out of the way.

I realize that this comment is probably too late to help anyone, but I noticed that when you take the cursor outside of the playing area, you are then able to rotate the entire cube at will.

Hi Laura (#32)! Nope not here. I am running Rubicon.exe from the Rubicon Games folder. Still Memory access violation. Nothing in the Event logs either. Just a message box with this error message and that is it.

I thought that I would try this because I love Rubik's Cubes. The problem is you can't replace a "hands on" cube with a virtual one, especially with difficult controls. I also received the Memory access violation. :(

When I clicked the Setup, an error said:

"Activation module failed to connect to game.giveawayoftheday.com. Software activation is not possible at the moment. Please try again later or check your firewall settings."

I have a cable connection so I'm always connected and my firewall came up, but I clicked Allow.

I think for those of you that have XP with the error is you need to create a icon short cut and not move the one that is part of the unzip. that way you can play the game and the memory error which happened to me when I tried to move the icon from the folder and I am running Vista Prem. Once I created the desktop icon I was able to play

I posted a comment about an hour ago. So far it has not made it's way to this page. I don't want to waste my time posting about this giveaway but I wonder why my first comment was not posted. I'm not the first nor the last person wondering that question. Thank you GGAOTD for your efforts but please post all comments.

Really crappy game. I've seen better games on here bfore - nothing that is too useful, especially if you can't even turn all of the levels on it's own.

Besides - there's no stickers to cheat with!

I have had several Rubik's cubes over the years. Some were full blown Rubik's cubes, others were key chains, etc. I have never been able to solve any of them. I thought this would be a waste of time for me but I gave it a try. I was so confused as to how to move the columns and how to play. After reading the comments I learned from others. My thanks to Bobby619 for your great review. Your hints on the controls definitely helped me. I will keep this one for now. I would suggest others to at least give it a try. My only question is the same that has been asked here before but never answered that I have seen. why doesn't Fly Games have a web site? I would like to visit them and see all they have to offer. Thank you GGAOTD for the game. Thank you Fly Games.

I love solving Rubik's Cube, I do even speedcubing, but when I didn't manage to solve even one side in 5 minutes (which is with real cube possible in few seconds) I have quitted this game. Though the graphics is OK, the gameplay is pretty confusing and if you are using formulas or even your mind with planning moves it might be a nightmare. Personally, the colour placement embarrasses me too as it's not arranged as in original. Thirdly, the caption Rubic Cube is wrong as well :(
Just for fun it might be interesting game for few minutes, but I cannot advise it to any serious learning or solving. Though solving cube might be a lot easier with right sources than you could think, games like this instead of real cube (even the cheapest plastic on the market) can seriously discourage evryone from learning how to "do this little art."

Just BTW... EVERYONE can learn how to solve cube, with some good google sources even in 2-3 hours with remembering about 7 easy steps ;)

The solution is very simple. Go to GOOGLE and type in "SOLVE RUBIK'S CUBE" (no quotes) and you will get quite a few solution methods.

#2:John B : If you`re getting this error, then you`ve encountered a SW bug - the so called Memory Access Violation. It happens when a programmer tried to access a memory that hasn`t been created. Something must have happenned and the memory wasn`t created whereas the programmer must assume that the memory is allocated. So, it`s just a bug that might be reproducible in your environment.

John B #2, same here. I am running Aston 1.9.6 shell though.

Gateway Celeron M 370 (1.5GHZ)
MX6124 (laptop) w/1GB
Windows XP Home SP2
Intel(r) 910GML (64MB shared)

I was also very good at solving the Rubik's cube. I usually could do it in 3 minutes. And I used to walk around the stores solving them all that others had screwed up. So I was hoping that I could try this version as well. Oh well.

Again, as with the recently-offered checkers(draughts, for all you Brits) game, I cannot review today's giveaway, as it is not so much a computer game as it is a classic puzzle. I can't review the Rubik's Cube!

They actually did this back on the ZX Spectrum.

Oh, and "Rubicon" is a stupid name for this game.

I'm lucky enough to be able to complete the real cube. It's not really THAT clever, and is just a matter of remember some move sequences that swap various squares around. Having this skill made me popular back in the 1980s when the cube was a big crazy. :)

Unfortunately this sort of puzzle doesn't transfer well to the computer. I've installed this offering, but I doubt it will remain on my hard drive until the end of the day. The controls are extremely awkward and the whole experience is very frustrating.

It's tuff to get used to the controlls on this game but once you do it's pretty cool. Check Whiterabbit's post for hints on that. Other than that it's interesting. If you've never solved the handheld version chances are you won't solve this one either but you can still have fun trying. Thanks GGOTD for another "keeper".

I am giving this a no, because "I" play games to escape life a bit and have FUN! The controls being a bit difficult add to the frustration of a puzzle game that was never much fun in the first place for me. I know there are those out there who have a gift for seeing the puzzle differently and are able to solve it, even in record time. For them, this is a good game to keep. Thank you as always for the games though. Sharon H.

I couldn't do this years ago & I still can't. No trouble installing but as has been said before it needs to be held in the hand for an overall view.
I think one of the reasons most people are giving this a no today is because it is very hard to solve. A puzzle not a game. Well done to GAOD.

Installed and tested the game. Physical Rubic's Cube has been translated successfully to the virtual world of the pc.
It has a simple graphic (btw: the original cube wasn't more exciting), moving the slices needs practice.
All in all everything is fine. But holding the original cube in my hands is much easier to play with.
This game seems to be a challenge/exercise for the programmers but no game to get rich.
My rating:
8/10 for the realization
2/10 for fun factor

The above sentence regarding moving the wheels should read:

It was only when I used the mouse wheel in conjunction with the left and right mouse buttons that I got all sides to rotate left and right to top and bottom (does that make sense lol) are better in all dimensions x, y and z.

though I've just seen Bobby's review which explains the movement very well.

No full review today.

Once you get used to the controls this is an excellent puzzle game. Rotation of each side is accomplished by a combination of right and left mouse button with the mouse wheel.

It took me several minutes to figure out that the mouse wheel is an important feature of the turning mechanism. Initially I found that each plane of the Rubik cube (proper spelling I think, from memory though) would only rotate in one plane. It was only when I used the mouse wheel in conjunction with the left and right mouse buttons that I got all sides to rotate left and right.

Don't give up on the game; once you've mastered the moves it's an excellent and just as frustrating puzzle as it ever was (my spatial awareness isn’t very good so I always had difficulty with the Rubik cube, lol.

You get four versions with this game which will add a lot more fun than the original. Try the four by four square, it's awesome. The original Rubik cube was 3x3 and the Rubik 4x4 revenge cube was released later once the original became a big success.

If you miss today’s giveaway you can consol yourself with the following online game:

http://www.fetchfido.co.uk/games/rubik/rubik_cube.htm

granted it’s only the 3x3 puzzle but it’s better than nothing. You can actually find loads of these online, so if the one above doesn’t suite you try Googling Rubiks cube. Here’s a link for solving the 3x3 puzzle

http://lar5.com/cube/

Thank you Fly games and the giveaway team for an excellent game that I'll certainly be keeping. It's worth a good 7 out of 10 in my opinion.

The classic rubic cube on your computer, huh?

Extraction & Activation: Like usual, it was easy and fairly quick. It had no errors. The activation went fine.

Gameplay: I was a little skeptical about this game at first. I thought it wouldn't be that great, but I ended up downloading and extracting it. I found it too be very hard but fun. The rules are simple: turn the parts of the cube/pyramid until one side is covered with one color and only one color. It is simply just like a normal rubic cube (or rubic pyramid) on the computer. To navigate, hold the left mouse button to rotate a part. If you hover over the part you want to rotate, it will be highlighted. Use the scroll wheel to change the part you want to rotate. The right mouse button will be used to rotate the whole cube/pyramid itself, so you will be able to see the other sides of the cube/pyramid.

3x3 Cube: Simply your normal rubic cube.

4x4 Cube: There will be an extra row there, adding to the difficulty. The navigation is the same.

3x3 Pyramid: It is similar to the average rubic cube, except it is in a pyramid shape. Navigation is the same.

4x4 Pyramid: Pretty obvious at this point. Navigation is the same.

Music: You have a choice to play music or not. Just go to the option and you will see a check box with "MP3 Music" next to it. Simply check it in to listen. What is odd, though, I looked in the folder for music and found it to be WAV files, not MP3...
Also, even if you check MP3 Music, it still won't play any music. I'm pretty sure that my speakers are on (I listen to music a lot), and I'm sure it isn't on mute. If anyone else has this problem, please let me know so I know it isn't just my computer.

Graphics: Pretty nice. They aren't the best, but they aren't pixelated, either.

To Comment #2, John B: I'm sorry, but I don't know the reason to your problems. Have you tried re-extracting it? Or maybe re-downloading the whole setup file from GAOTD again? That is all I can think of.

Conclusion: It is basically an average game. It has average graphics. Average, challenging gameplay. It's kinda lame, but it isn't that bad. I guess my skepticism earlier had something to do with the fact that I have never solved a rubic cube in my life :), but some of the skepticism proved to be true. At least I don't need to use a few bucks to buy a rubic cube :D.

The Verdict: A thumb up, 3/5, 6/10.

In a Nutshell: It's a rubic cube/pyramid on your computer.

As expected, Rubic's Cube is not something that converts well to a computer game. It is really something that has to be held in your hand. And the controls on this cube are confusing and uncomfortable. Sorry to say that this will be the only game I have downloaded from here that I will be deleting. -Dan
