Royal Gems:

In Brief:
Royal Gems is a simple match three game with 160 levels divided into eight episodes with several bonues that can be upgraded using crystals you earn for completing levels up to five times per bonus..

Royal Gems was originally given away on the 9th May 2015 where it received a positive 73% from 336 votes with 29 comments which you can see HERE.

You can see a few videos of game play HERE, HERE, HERE and one via the Steam store page HERE.

You can also see some Steam community reviews of the game HERE and Big Fish Community members feedback HERE.

The Game:
Royal Gems initially appears to be a lovely, bright match-three game that will suck away all of your free time like so many other games have been able to do. While the terms “lovely” and “bright” certainly do apply to the final product, Royal Gems unfortunately offers a disappointing experience that feels more like a Facebook game than a PC download title.

Royal Gems comes with nothing in the way of storyline or characters. It’s simply you and a list of dozens of levels, each of which has three stars to earn as you play. Each level also comes with a series of tasks to complete, with some being easier than others. In each stage, matches are made by clicking and dragging to form lines across matching, touching symbols, but matches can only be made horizontally and vertically (that is, diagonal matches aren’t allowed). Adding to this simplistic setup is the inability to make your next match while the animation from the previous match is still active, so speed really isn’t available here.

While each stage may technically have different goals, they all still feel almost identical, since most simply ask you to activate power-ups by creating specific shapes with the gems you match. You may be required to make a power-up using a straight line of four gems, or a power using an L shape, as examples. Instead of being offered in a 1:1 ratio, you’ll instead need to create four of these same shaped matches before activating a single power-up on the board, so levels requiring the formation and activation of these power-ups in bulk can be incredibly difficult to complete.

While most levels aren’t timed, they do come with move counters, giving you only a varying amount of available moves to complete that specific level’s tasks. If you fail to complete one or more tasks before you run out of moves, you’ll still pass the level, and can even easily earn two of the three stars available in that stage, making me question what the purpose of these tasks is at all.

Royal Gems feels incredibly similar to Facebook games like Candy Crush Saga, as each level comes with different tasks, and you can replay them as many times as you see fit. Of course, there’s no energy system here that limits the length of your gameplay session, but Royal Gems does offer a boosts store where you can spend the purple gems you earn by completing levels. These boosts may increase the number of moves you have in each level, or increase the effect of power-ups (bombs, lightning bolts, etc.), but they quickly become too expensive to purchase without grinding through the same sorts of levels over and over again.

Royal-Gems-009
With the ability to earn stars and technically “win” stages even without completing each level’s tasks, the setup of Royal Gems is simply confusing. If there’s no real penalty for not completing tasks, why should we try to complete them in the first place? Just to have something to do? This leniency on the part of the game developer does offset the challenge to actually complete some tasks due to the random nature of the appearance of gems on the screen, but if the solution was to seemingly remove all ability to “lose,” perhaps another method should have been chosen.

Grandpa Bejeweled... tell us the story about when you just swapped jewels to make matches without tasks! This is the beloved Match 3 style where you pick a gem and connect all other gems around it of the same color...but there are no switching jewels here and with added task requirements to do for completing the level. You must also finish a level within a certain limit on the number of moves shown by a purple bar to the left side adding more of a chess like think ahead strategy, or within a set time limit in some cases. At the end of each level, you also get to upgrade features like increase the number of turns you can make in a level, and the ability of the power-ups.

The game mechanics here has only vertical and horizontal matching (no diagonals) and you can match in one direction only such as cannot backtrack and further go in a different direction which adds to the strategy but might be polarizing to some or just take time to get used to it. You also cannot cancel a selection without backtracking the mouse of all your gems selected and so there must be more thought before selecting which adds some strategy again but might make it less enjoyable or annoying to others. Perhaps this should have been an option for a choice of difficulty.

What is innovative is that you will have to also match patterns of same colored gems (shapes like in the classic Tetris game). Making certain shapes 4 times creates a power up on the field like bombs or lightning to destroy the gems on the board. You then make the power up part of a chain of the same color to trigger it. All in all the game has good graphics and sound, fun gameplay and initially its only whether you are comfortable with the matching mechanics in this game vs others you may have played will determine how much enjoyment you will get. As jason said and I agree: It's just a different kind of Match 3 game so can't really compare it to other swap type of games.

The game worked well on windows 11. You have to match gems and complete tasks for each level. I have played the first 5 levels but it does seem you don't have to complete the tasks for each level, like if you run out of moves and you haven't completed all of the tasks set you still get up to 2 stars and can move on to the next level. I will keep this game but it doesn't hold my interest like some games like this.

For those who you that participate in Game Giveaway Of The Day Activities you will know 8 Floor is commonly known for Solitaire, Mahjong and Griddler type games.

Today's game breaks the tradition of the typical titles we see on the site and is actually a decent match tracing game with nice screen effects that keep it simple to the point but fun to play.

The game starts you off with a nice tutorial that gives you great advice and how to play and in later levels it introduces you to ways the game can be enhanced and turned in your favor by accomplishing tasks etc.

You'll notice per standard 8Floor flare that you have the star objectives that can be completed to get better scores etc. The game keeps track of your scores when you play and so forth and require at least 35 stars to go to the next world once you have completed all the levels in the current one.

One thing to mention. If you were spoiled on Bejeweled back in the day and you match a big chain of gems you can't help but wonder why other gems don't break when they drop on the field. It's just a different kind of Match 3 game that's all so can't really compare it to swap type of games.

Overall todays game is worth keeping for the challenges and the addicting gameplay but if you really love these types of games you may find yourself possibly completing the whole game in as little as 2 days if you really dedicate yourself to the task.
