#29 - I realise that I'll never see anything near current games up here. But some of these titles are rather lacking. My point was that because of the choice of games (or better yet the unavailability of commercial quality games) GAOTD is limited to who their audience may be. I'd say users with either young 'unblemished' children... or adults who have not experienced commercial quality games are the most likely audience.

So, due to what my gaming expectations are I'll *try* and not waste more of my time here. I remain hopeful that the daily giveaway (not game) will remain useful. But I'm very opposed to loading tons of small apps that install as services and hog CPU and RAM resources.

And really whats better here (and way more useful) are the comments about which free ware apps do the same (and generally better too). Why are freeware apps better? Because they tend to be open source meaning you have more developers working on the app, rather than one or two poorly paid uni undergraduates. (BTW I myself am a developer.. but I'm also 21yrs old.. so I still enjoy gaming)

And yes, it would be stupid for publishers to release commercial quality games here... they'd lose money of course.

Back to work then...

#29, I don't think any reasonable person who visits this site expects free games of anywhere near the size and complexity of the ones you mentioned, just ones that are better than the majority on offer here.
The old saw that beggars cannot and should not be choosers holds true, but at some point even beggars will stop coming to an area where they only receive plugged nickels day after day.

Hello again everyone,

#33 Laura Sierra

…you might not like tetris , but , you know …some of us dont like the hack, slash and burn, death games that some of you are very enthused about. there are a wide range of games and tastes here.

As a matter of fact, I don't like those kinds of games either and you'll never see me ask for them.

Yes, there are a wide range of games here and I didn't happen to complain to GOTD for having it here. I do understand the GOTD initiative. However, I did review the game, which is what we're supposed to do and it's true that what I had to say wasn't all flattering.

That's not what the software houses are looking for - they are looking for honest reviews that come from users who would like to see the gaming world improved.

I'm very happy you like tetris, however the majority of gamers who are used to challenges with more complexity, will definitely find it boring and turn to other games to satisfy what they want to see in a game - me included.

I agree, it would be nice to try some of the newer games Alive Games offers, but for those who don't have a tetris game, or kids, it isn't a bad version: there are options for sound, music and a variety of skins to choose from. The controls run fine on my notebook (XP) and, as mentioned, the space bar is available to pull the piece to the bottom. It also offers the option of windowed play, which so many do not. So all-in-all, considering it is a re-tread of an old stand-by, I'd give it about 6/10. My only problem is I can't get it to activate! I've been with GGOTD from the beginning and this is the first time I can't figure out what the problem is. I've run acivate-install-activate (my usual combination) and I still get "unregistered version" - anyone else having trouble? As always, thanks GGOTD team. Your efforts are much appreciated!

I was excited when I saw it was a tetris game today....I had been thinking of buying Tetris for Nintendo DS (and I may still) so this looked like a nice little distraction, but the controls are TERRIBLE. If you press ALT to speed up a falling block, there is no way to slow it down again, so you end up with tetris blocks hurling downwards in the wrong position. In most tetris games you can hold the down arrow key to momentarily speed up a block and release it to get it to normal speed. Yes, the graphics are lacking, but the real reason this gets a thumbs down from me is that the controls almost render it unplayable.

I agree wholeheartedly with #22. It is always proper to show appreciation for free things, but too many factors speak against that here:
Firstly, at least 90% of these games are NOT commercial quality. Who is actually paying for this stuff? I can go to Caiman, Noodan, or Acid-Play and find better freeware games made by High School Joe Blow.
Secondly, 90% of these are puzzle games. I suggest either changing your name to Puzzle Game Giveaway Of The Day or offering a better variety of genres.
Thirdly, there are the icons everyone here detests. I just dump them into the recycle bin, so they don't bother me all that much.
In summary, a genuine thanks for the free daily games, but let's not pretend most of these games are of the calibre for which anyone would part with dosh.

The space, laboratory and rebirth skins are nice. Otherwise it's very tame and normal. Maybe I didn't win enough for surprises yet?!? I should play a little more :P

Thanks

#22, what exactly do "current games look like" to you? If you're at all in touch with reality then you'd already know you're not going to find anything close to a "current game" on this website. "Current games" are titles such as F.E.A.R., Half Life 2, World Of Warcraft, and Tiberium Wars. All these titles require at least a 256mb video card, nothing even remotely close to the average system requirements of a GAOTD game. These games aren't even made by the same people who make high-end new releases. If you're gonna complain, at least make your complaints founded on accurate information.

This game looks fantastic, but doesn't play as well. It's alright.

Good morning everyone! ;)

The minute I saw that I could only use the keyboard to control the game, I knew I was going to uninstall it immediately. I'll never buy a game, unless it has a choice of mouse controls and/or gamepad/joystick as well.

However, it activated and installed easily enough without any issues. There are so many options, that I'll leave it to those to get into that are actually enjoying the game.

For what it's worth, I chose the zodiac background which I did enjoy for its graphic content. The graphics are really lovely with bright colors and professionally done.

Oddly enough, I haven't had the oversensitive mouse problems that others had.

You have a choice of several mp3(?) files, none of which I liked (techno on one,) so I ended up turning the music off. However, the music will appeal to young players I'm sure.

Instead of tetris blocks, there are various blocks of animals in the normal tetris configurations - big deal - it doesn't make the game play any differently.

Other than that, it's simply a tetris clone and doesn't bring anything new to the game play - unless it changes in the higher levels - but I was so bored after 5 mins, that I didn't even bother to go any further than Level 2.

Thank you to Alive Games for making this game available to those who will enjoy it - but a request please - you have so many great games on your site, including the Mystery Files games and Ravenhearst (which I've already bought!) How about letting us review those for you instead of tired old tetris clones.

Thanks again GOTD - not a great call this time, but perhaps young kids experiencing the gaming world for the first time who have never heard of tetris may enjoy it.

Thumbs down and 2/10 for the graphics alone.

Uninstalled.

~ Swan

I agree with (some of) the comments from #22 (MC) & #23 (PLady100).

1. Plenty of free Tetris clones out there. (With, again, better graphics too!)
2. Extra crap on the Desktop; nobody wants it, cares for it or needs it. Note to the publishers: Stop doing that, you'll do more harm than good to your business...

I have installed this game, because I actually like Tetris. But decided, after seconds of gameplay, to uninstall it because of:
a. Poor graphics. No matter what your actual screen resolution is, the game will be 'full screen' with a 640 x 480 resolution. Believe me; on a 21" monitor, that shows (and blows).
b. Mediocore gameplay. Some free Tetris clones have done it better. And I mean: *way better*.
c. Extra crap showing on the desktop. (Silly me, I thought we all passed that station in the 90's...)

If I bought this software (or is it glorified abandonware?) for $14.95, I would not be pleased. To put it mildly.

Oh, and I forgot my usual rant that goes with ALL games downloaded these days. KEEP THE EXTRA CRAP OFF MY DESKTOP!!! Adding your extra 'download more games, etc' icons to my desktop only infuriates me. The more times I see them, the more it burns your name into my memory, insuring that I will NEVER pay for ANY of your games.

As if. You can get better developed games for free than this. There are dozens of these around. Not so much annoyed that his is being given away for free.. just the fact that developers *think* they could sell this. What a joke. This was probably made by some uni student for a 1st year assignemnt, then sold to the publisher for 20 bucks.

This is really for the 'I have young old children who don't know what current games look like' market.

Truth is that GAOTD cannot 'give away' more modern games. These real publishers have no need to give away good games that are actually bought by the mass audience. So really GOATD is limited in who are interested in their giveaways. I won't ever say thank you to GAOTD for a giveaway, simply because they aren't doing me a favour... they are making money from this - be it from the publishers or the advertising.. I'm not sure. Besides I don't want so many small application stealing resources makng everything else run poorly.

Anywho back to work.

I want to use my mouse, not the keyboard. I wish all game makers would give us that option. Other than that, I never got the Tetris addiction. So, meh.

#16, you can press the space bar to get it to the bottom quickly. But you still can't slide it once it's there.

I dont like this game. You can only use keypad. When the block hits the bottom you have no chance to slide it,and you cant press anything to make the block go ahead and fall when you get it where you want it,so I end up staring at the screen waiting,in the beggining levels.I haven't found one game from Alive games yet that I have enjoyed, but thanks anyways.

Graphics are bad
Oversensitivity of keyboard
Unoriginality

in short a game that dates back to April-17-2003

I wonder how old, decrepit and bad a game has to be before
people on here will not like it.

Thanks GAOTD... I luv tetris take-offs. The only problem I have with this one, is that the keys seem to be "overly-sensitive." I.e., the blocks seem to spin around more than once, even tho I push the key once. I see no sensitivity setting, but realize this is an oldie. But anyone who has that prob and fixed it, would be appreciated. Otherwise, thanks again!

This is a good game. Not technically perfect, but nonetheless a good one. The graphics are okay, and the music can at least be turned off. There are a lot of skins, gametypes and the game plays fine too.. good one if you need to get some anti-bordom stuff... I think it also could be a lot better quality, but the game is playable... :)
