Rock Legend is a turn-based game, in some ways similar to the gameplay of Kudos. Each turn of the game represents a single day, and it's up to you to decide how the band spends their time. Some of the activities you will need to spend time on include songwriting, rehearsals, auditions, publicity events, practicing individual instruments, and of course, recording your latest album.

The game has sophisticated AI that controls your band members (you are the singer, they are your backing band) and decides how motivated, energetic and happy they are. If you work the band too hard, arrange poorly-attended gigs, and don't provide your band with the lifestyle they expect, you will have resignations on your hands. Running a successful band is part financial management, part people-management, and part creative struggle. Would you survive the music business?

Looks really nice so far, but i seem to encounter a lot of bugs with regards to loading a previously saved game. IE if i load a gamw which i saved on the day of the gig, if i exit the game and go back in i don't have the option to click on the far right button and click on the button to goto the gig even though it shows on the timeline bar at the top. Another one i encountered, was i "improved" an existing song and then saved the game. Then a bit later i loaded that game back in, but the new song title i gave it and the changes i had made were lost! If it weren't for these issues i'd actually be able enjoy it more.

Installs & runs great on XP sp2! This is one of the best PC games I've ever seen, & we have purchased many! Fun for me, age 58, & for my grandchild, age 7! We all had a blast! And it isn't just over in 30 mins or an hr, so it's way funner than short games! AND there are cuss words or "demonic" things about it, so Fear NOT!:) Thanks GOTD & Positech Games!

After playing the game for a while, I have noticed one bug.

When you record a CD, no matter what you call the CD, it won't use that name and instead it will use one of the random CD titles (even if you choose a different random title instead of typing one in, it doesn't matter).

I accidentally posted my comment incomplete:

This is a good game; one of the better ones given away recently. My only complaint is that the graphics can be messed up sometimes, and are sometimes nothing but pure white. I'd also like to note, for anyone feeling adventurous, that the game's data folder contains one the files config.txt and strings.ini file that allows you to pretty much modify the entire game.

In the practice folder, there's a melodies.txt that lets you change the sequences you have to remember (they're all predefined), so if you want to 'cheat', you can make them way simpler, or even change the sounds they make (along with replacing things in the sounds folder).

The bitmaps folder lets you change the game's graphics, the configs folder lets you change how smoke, flames, and other rendered effects appear, fonts speaks for itself - I have to say, this is an amazingly modifiable game. Kudos to the developers, I'll definitely consider adding some new graphics or default album and song names.

I played a free demo of this game and enjoyed it using the HP games console that came with my laptop. It's nice to see it here. It's a fun game. The only downside I saw is that it is too short.

to #35....no, your screen should not go white for rehearsal or taking the day off. You should see a list of a few activities or rehearsal spaces to choose from.

And to the person wondering about violence or language, no there is none in this game. About the most raucous thing that happens is that some of the band members will have a habit of destroying instruments or will occasionally say they tore some things up. Pretty tame really.

Hi Larry, I'm not prejudiced against space hoot 'em ups. In fact, they are amngst my favorite genr. I've even bought some of the $60 games such as Spaceforce rougue universe and Genesis rising. In fact some of the computer games I ever bought were space shooters (Epic and Elite) I wasn't complaining about space shooters I was trying to make a pont that there has been a wide variety of genres despite a lot of complaints that there are too amny space shooters. I think if you read all the reviews I've written about the space shooters and check out the space shooters thread in the forums I think they would testify to my love of space shoot 'em ups. Read the first few words of te paragraph where I mention Sapace shhoters. It reads "some may say that we have had an oveabundance" it doesn't say that I say it. so your accusation that I'm prejudice has no place here. :)

By the way, excellent idea spiritwolf and thanks HOSS for poining out to Larry that I wasn't being prejudiced.

i Russ, yeah, the meds I take (morphine and Gabapentin tend to make me waffle on a little. I do tend to add some personal stuff as well.

regards

Stephen

Original concept (AFAIK).

I beat the game in a few hours, but my son seems to be having more issues getting the band up and going (he's 7).

Gameplay feels intuitive. The graphics are believable, and the story seems believable as well.

I liked it and will probably play again. My son likes it as well and will keep playing it until he beats it.

Thanks GGOTD for a fun, new game.

@ Larry #30 - I think you should read Whiterabbit's comment again, he said that 'some' people are complaining about there being to many space shooters but if you do the math there hasn't been that many. For myself, I don't mind a space shooter but some of them of late have been very low quality (IMHO).

Thanks to Whiterabbit (#4) for another great game review and to Doc Immortal (#25) for the list of ways the game could be better. That is what this page is all about! :)

I too was surprised at how much I like this game. I didn't think I would since I am not a 'rocker' like 'rockerlox' and the thought of writing a song was a little intimidating. Well, you don't have to know how to write a song or how to sing or perform or any of that. All you have to do is manage resources. You decide how much to practice, when to take a day off, which improvements to buy and so on. Do not be intimidated by this game, it is more fun than it looks. The graphics are great and the music is not bad but then, I turn it down anyway. It takes a little while to learn but there are tips to help you along the way. This game is worth a download :!:

And for john #32 - I did not see anything that would be unsuitable for the younger ones, did anyone else see anything??

Unfortunately, bad language, violence, and evil acts abound in today's society. All one has to do is turn on the news (I for one would like to see newscasts spend even 1 percent as much time reporting positive things, as they spend on negative shocking things!)

Kids learn the worst vile words on the first day they go to school, if they haven't learned them from preschool or hearing them from adults around them already! (Kinda shocking when your firstborn child comes home from school on the first day of kindergarten and when asked to tell about his first day, responded with asking what the F word means and added he heard it on the bus!

Here is what would be a good solution to the problem of making games both kid-suitable and optionally capable of providing more adult effects for those wanting them.

Some developers of old games such as Redneck Rampage used to include a default language pack that was safe for children, no bad words, then also have a separate "Cuss pack" that people could optionally install if they wanted bad words. That game also came with an optional "guts pack" that could be optionally installed for people wanting more gore in the game.
That way, the game was safe for kids but also could be modified for those wanting more tough talk, blood, and gore.

If developers would do this with games now, and made it possible to choose the clean or tough version to run, then a game could please both people who need the game to be kid-friendly, and also please those who want a tough game unfit for children!

Thanks for the support pava; sorry to disappoint you Vilulf. Some games just can't be reviewed in such a brief time. I try to be as informative as possible, which I feel I achieved with today’s game giveaway. When I get the heads up on a game at least a day before, it gives me time to research and find relevant information that I think others who visit here will appreciate. I will also attempt to play as deeply as possible given any time constraints and then report as succinctly as possible.

I’m sure If I’d cut the quoted information as well as all the links to various videos, other reviews and images, the review would have been a lot shorter, but then adding links to other good reviews is always something I think is important as every reviewer will have something different to say. Several reviews will give a much more holistic view of any game as opposed to one person’s viewpoint. If you like minimalist reviews, just skip over mine as they are rarely short efforts because I enjoy writing. I only wish I could do much better. :)

p.s.

Nice erudite review Doc Immortal; I've picked up some useful information Thank you. :)

@29, vilulf: With my small monitor and preferred 800x600 resolution, it took 12 Page-Downs to reach the end of Whiterabbit's initial review. So? Internet space is free - stretch that pinky and hit the key, or reach over and mouse the scrollbar. Rent a clue, man, and be glad for a little exercise. We all expect a miniature treatise from this gamemeister.

Stephen's thorough articles answer virtually all the questions, better than most game reviewer's I've read. I appreciate his dedication to the task and his attention to detail. And WR's conversational style is easy to read. With all due respect, vilulf, if you want brevity, tune into CNN Headline News.

Game is really interesting, and right up my alley. I haven't had much time to play yet, but installed fine and initiates fine. Smooth transitions on my relatively high-end rig: XP, 4 gigs RAM, ATI Radeon x1950 Pro.

Love, love, love the article "Talking to Pirates". It correctly pinpointed what I hear the most beef about, which is DRM. I'm a big Sims2 fan, and it's shocking how many people (including myself) who have been pushed to pirating or no longer getting EA products due to SecuROM. Those of us who had issues with the DRM actually hurting our systems (in my case, disabling my antivirus because it was OMG evil) have been spreading the word. It's always lovely to see a company taking a stand and realizing that DRM is counterproductive. I'm adding this company to my shockingly short list of game companies to watch for releases to buy.

Have played the demo and enjoyed it. Thought about buying it, but had a pretty big backlog of games so never got around to it.

One other game in a similar vain that I enjoyed immensely was Shady O'Grady's Rising Star. You can check it out here: http://www.gilligames.com/. On the download page there is a playable demo and there are links to videos of the game being played. The full version does cost $29 and in my opinion is well worth $9 more than this, but it is hard to top this for free.

The only complaint that I have and ever will have are big games or programs that you take the time to download and fill up your computer and they dont run because of a bad file so you have to hunt it down if I down load it I would like to play it just once like yesterdays game bad file tryed to download three times and didn't run other than that I give you two thumbs up if you dont like it or its been on before just wait for a new one the next day your not out anything but your time way to go this one looks grate so far way to go ggotd

I've played the demo enough to give do this rating now. I'm doing this review as if I had to pay for it. Remember, we get the game free today, everyone else has to pay for it, so all reviews should be from that perspective and not the "shut up, it's free" perspective. After all, that's the whole point of the free downloads.

Overall, this game is pretty decent. You have a variety of images for your character, you can come up with a band name (or use a random name generator). From there, you can buy albums or see bands to "inspire you" and write songs, recruit band members, book gigs, promote your gigs, buy T-shirts and gear, etc.

Practicing is essentially Simon. You hear and see various notes that appear in one of five positions. Then you repeat the pattern. It starts with 4-5 and gets a bit more complicated later on.

Writing songs involves putting "Post-it Notes" together. The Post-its have ... well ... notes on them. Each note is one of 3 colors (red, blue, green). Colors of adjacent notes must match for better songs. The more "inspired" you are, the more notes on each Post-It. You then give it a name (or use the song name generator) and save it.

The rest is time management. The more you practice and rehearse, the better you sound. You have to deal with stress (go to a bar, etc). Once you book a gig, you plaster posters or hand out fliers at a club that another band is playing at. All tasks take a day to do (put up posters, hand out fliers, practicing, rehearsal, etc.

This game has a LOT of potential but it doesn't quite get there. Here's my qualms:

1. There's not much gear to buy. Most of the stage stuff is geared for metal bands (skull, Stonehenge, pyrotechniques). It'd be better to have also have stuff for non metal bands as well. More types of guitars, drums, etc would be nice. Each could have stats on how well they'd play and sound. This is my biggest qualm.

1. Regardless of type of music your band is, you'll have to buy records of other types to get more Post-It notes. There's one album/band for each type of music. This is my second biggest qualm.

2. The random generators only cycle through the same names. It'd be better to have band names use a small dictionary of words (nouns, adjectives, verbs) and come up with combinations. It'd be a bit harder with the song names, but it's doable.

4. The song writing would be cooler if you wrote for each instrument. Granted, this would go beyond the "time management" concept. Maybe the "advanced" player would have this option. Selecting an instrument would show the Post-It notes related to that instrument. Each one would have a short 10 second sound file associated to it. So, you'd actually hear the sound. Each song would be 80 seconds long (I believe they have 8 Post-Its in the game for each song). Granted, there'd be no "words", but it'd still be cool.

5. You can't have two guitarists. You can only have one. And the band must have 4 players before you gig. There's a lot of 2 or 3 bands out there. Why not allow those configurations? If you combined this, limiting it to 2 would limit your sound. Also, make it so the singer can also play an instrument (I mean why not).

6. If you do #4, you can play one of the songs when it shows the "concert screen". It's better than just a "Thank You!" and exploding fire (if you have pyrotechniques).

7. Again, if people can write songs, then they'd be able to upload/download them, start a community, which means ... ka-ching ... more sales.

Anyway, I give this a 7 out of 10. If at least qualms 1 + 2 were addressed, I'd give it an 8.5 or maybe a 9.
