Pixel Survivors

In Brief

Pixel Survivors is a retro styled real time strategy/god/survival game, that has garnered a mixed reception on Steam. You can see the Steam communities reviews HERE. It was a a Steam Greenlight project from 2014/15 that was Greenlit March 2015.
If you don't win a license but still wish to own this game it can be purchased for only £2.79 ($3.99/3.99 Euro's) via Steam HERE.

Overall I'd give this game a 6 out of 10 for it's gameplay, fun factor, and replayability. (I purchased it last year). For those who trade their Steam trading cards, this game has three cards that will drop while playing the game. Present sale prices for selling these cards on the Steam market range from £0.05 to £0.77 ($0.07 to $1.12) depending on whether you have standard or foil cards. Steam do take a percentage of the sale.

You can see videos of game play HERE and HERE

Suggestions:
For those who don't like this type of game; instead of posting a few words saying ''you think this is a waste of time'', or other words to that effect, would you instead give some feedback detailing why you don't like the game and how it could be improved from your point of view (You'll need to go watch some 'You Tube' Videos and perhaps read some reviews for today's game, to see what you think of the game before you can leave appropriate feedback). If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why.

There are (or were) usually thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you, or maybe the key bindings are not intuitive enough for you and you would like to be able to change the key bindings; maybe the game only plays in full screen, but you prefer windowed mode?

Free quality AAA game

If you were hoping for a free game today, those that are lucky enough to win a key will have to wait till the offer is over on Monday morning 9am (GMT) to find out whether they have won a key. In the mean time you may find games either free of for less than the price of a cup of coffee from your favorite coffee house via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which you can find HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to the excellent FPS game Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. It's a little dated compared to the latest FPS games, but is still a great game with excellent graphics. It was released around 2005 so should easily play on most computers of today.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game. Orlygift is also giving away 5000 Steam keys for Bloxitivity. You can try your luck HERE.

My Giveaways - 40 to 50 Steam keys

I am going to be giving away more Steam keys over the next two days (most tomorrow) from my own personal collection of spare keys that I have accumulated over the last several years. Most are from indie bundles that I have purchased, some are from pre ordering AAA games and others I've got for free for applying for them, or reviewing their games. I have at least 4 to 5 thousand keys (probably more), some of which I've decided to give away.

There's no catch apart from only those that give some appropriate feedback for todays and/or tomorrows game giveaway will get the opportunity to get a key. Please DO NOT post any comments about this offer here in this comments section. Instead please post in the thread I created specifically for this personal giveaway HERE. I've listed the games I'm going to give away over in the game discussion forums, so if you think you qualify for a free key (anyone who has posted appropriate comments about the games being given away this weekend), please leave a message with your giveaway name and preferences in the thread I've created. List as many of the games as you wish from the list, in the order you prefer them. If you win a key I will send it via the email you have used to post comments here or via the email (if different) that you used to create a forum account. For exceptional comments I will be awarding two keys (assuming there are enough to go around) If you have used one of those emails that are not real, I won't be able to send you a key. This isn't a trick to get your email, I'm a volunteer here and have no ulterior motives regarding the keys I'm giving away, nor am I interested in your email. Basically I've been at a loss as to what to do with the spare keys I have for several months now. I was originally buying them to give to my children and others for my back up Steam account and for Steam friends birthdays etc, but with the number of indie bundles now available each week, many of which I've purchased just to get one key (which was still a lot cheaper than buying the game via Steam or other outlets) I've ended up with thousands of spare keys over the last five years since the indie bundle concept started with the first Humble bundle. I will be adding more games to the list over in the forums HERE as and when I have time today.

Again, please do not post comments about this personal giveaway here in this comment page because this page is for today's and tomorrow's game giveaways and not mine. You must post your name and games you want in the giveaway forums via THIS thread. Thank you.

Hi! I just noticed I'm one of the winners in the giveaway (#27). It's the first time I win something here, so I was wondering how does it works, will I get the key through e-mail?

................................Moderator Comment...................................

Hi Luis, congrats. Yes, you should get an email with the code. I presume you know how to activate a game on Steam> If not it's really easy. Just click on the fourth menu item (game) on the top of the game client. from the drop down menu click on 'Activate a Product on Steam', a small window opens and the rest is self explanatory :)

I love these survival games. Going retro with the art style also keeps the cost low for the developer. And inspiring a nostalgia feeling can't hurt its appeal. Game looks good!

Something that can make a game like this more fun is to have some different cosmetic themes, like Populous did with its expansion pack for "The Promised Lands". Some ideas for themes: medieval Europe, ancient Japan, a futuristic setting, a fantasy land, candy land.

*Okay, Im gonna get downvoted for this to oblivion as well likely but there ya go*:

I understand that many people arent happy with such giveaways, me neither to be honest. But at the end of the day, its still a GIVEAWAY. People need to realise that just because its not a guaranteed win it doesnt mean the term is wrongly used.

Also no offence but I find it quite ironic/sad that people are literallly moaning over FREE stuff. Heres a thing:

1.you arent entitled to the latest supadupa cool stuff, as surprising as it may sound. People complain about when the only string attached is having a website opened upon closing the game, people complain when the game given away is steam only, like jesus christ.

If you dont like said giveaway, heres a wonderful solution for everyone: IGNORE IT.

I cant help but think that many people have a very scary sense of entitlement here. Just because "in the good old days" there were more "instant win" giveaways doesnt mean such model is sustainable at the long run.

As the old saying goes: you get what you pay for, thats all it needs to be said really.

Whiterabbit, thank you for your as always very helpful and thorough game review. I am very sorrowful about how things have gone on this site, and once more, I'm going to ask that you make a space for your reviews, new and old, and community commentary. Setting up on blogspot or similar is trivially easy (really. seriously. even I can do it), and if folks can find it by a search for whiterabbitUK, you might gather a lot of the regulars. Your reviews should not be just lost in the electrons.

I'm sure we all hope this site will regain its mojo, and if they would just scale back from aggressively irritating, folks might produce enough clicks to support them. I haven't posted in weeks, and I seldom stop in now because it just makes me sad. Please do think about it, Stephen. A lot of us have been at this so long that our gaming children are all grown up, or nearly! It would be nice to preserve the community. And a great resource to preserve your reviews. I hope you see this before someone wipes it.

All the best to you and yours, and know how much your reviews and moderation on this site are appreciated by the community. People come here for a free game, but they return and become regulars because of the reviews and discussion.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your feedback and suggestion historymom, I have considered it in the past and would still love to do so, but I really don't have the drive to do such a project on my own. A friend said he would help me some years ago, but that never came about. He was going to set up the site and manage it and I was going to do most of the reviews. I even started copying and adding to many of the reviews I'd posted previously with the aim of posting them on the new site, but my friend had issues that needed sorting such as parents passing etc. As far as I knew it was still a viable proposition, when I last spoke to my friend, but every message I've left with him since has been left unanswered. My son actually plays online with his son occassionally, but my friend seems to have gone underground for the past 18 months since I last spoke to him.

If I had a couple of community members who would join me in such a venture I might consider it. Actually a couple of members did set up a site some years ago, but I'd already agreed to work with the other fella, but as already said, it never happened, and as far as I remember, the project they started never really got off the ground. There is a lot of competiton for game review sites now. My idea was to create one that was virtually clear of advertising. Though I did consider adding links to game sites and even selling games for companies such as Game UK who give a percentage of the profit to you. That would pay for the site and other expenses. The main problem is, there are not many people who are willing to work voluntarily on such a project. I've been doing this since 2008 as a volunteer with moderator and admin privileges and was wrting reviews before that as well. Prior to that I used to work voluntarily for several modders for some big AAA games such as Battlefield 2 and Crysis as well as admin a couple of their sites, beta test their mods and maps. That's what actually got me into beta testing for Alawar and other smaller indie developers, all for free of course (though I did get some free games from Alawar and a nice Christmas present from them one year)

historymom, Hi, I'm with You on this one and would gladly see Stephen providing his Game Reviews and excellent interaction or friendly social exchanges with gaming community somewhere where his services could be better appreciated!:)

I was sorry however to see WR's reaction to comment provided earlier by 'voorbijganger' right at the bottom of this Column good few hours ago, but have to agree with this User and anybody who dares to see the connection between the changes here after February this year and growing 'shyness' of Developers, or why indeed the popularity of this Site is sadly falling down. In my humble opinion - If the Fans, Supporters and Sponsors(..) stop coming to watch your Show in expected big numbers - CHANGE THE SHOW, and don't blame them for empty seats!!? Not very wise or gallant! With all the respect I have for WR - in this case attack is not the best line of defence, sorry. To be honest the whole energy spent on making endless excuses and explanations about current state of GGOTD - could be used on enjoying this voluntary job to the full elsewhere? In a meantime Good Luck!:)

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your comment Fran, I've always repected your feedback as I still do. My comment to voorbijganger wasn't meant to be an attack, just to add to what he said. The recent problems and losss of interest by the community is more than likely a combination of everything that has been mentioned so far over the past weeks rather than anything specific.

Hope you have a pleasant Sunday. We do have a 'normal' game giveaway, that is if you can call a game from my PlayCity normal. It does have all but the browser opening to their site removed, which is something. MyPlayCity still want their income from playing the game.

p.s.

Did you read my reply to your last comment last week, where you mention gardening?. :)

Aah, yes WR, thanks for Your further reply to my comment the other week, wasn't sure what else to add to it:), so I can only express my anger that Your piece of mind is disturb by this appalling ongoing saga of builders from hell.. It's truly criminal to vandalize someone's flower-beds in this manner destroying precious garden landscape!!, grrrh. Hope You'll recover Your losses somehow! Also hoping Your Son get's his preferred first choice at Manchester Uni (our girls were lucky enough to get theirs without distress and panic going down the list of other positions instead. They were satisfied to secure places at Bournmouth University (Applied Languages) and Cheltenham College (Business Studies), but now all of that is but distant memories..:)

Have a nice, sunny Day with Family and moderating. Today's Game (Inca Ball) sounds fun and I'm sure those who like this type of Games will appreciate this offer better than me. Ancient history (themes) is not in general something I jump to join and discover in a rush. I'm more a Victorian and all 20th Century girl, lol, when it comes to Games Scenarios.. At the moment I'm ploughing through 'Haunted Hotel 11, the Axiom Butcher' CE, and am on Extra Play already, talking of 'gory', honestly:)), but best (realistic and artistic) graphics I've seen for long time! Shame it's not offered here today, or I would give it massive thumbs up and had plenty of useful tips to share!

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your feedback Fran, have you thought to check the games i'm, giving away. Not all are Steam keys. Sadly none of the haunted hotel games are available on Steam, at least not yet. They do have some of BFG's HOG's, so I expect we shall see them eventually. Have a pleasant Sunday evening, we've had a very pleasant and warm day compared to yesterdays dowpours.. If Steam wants us to enter for a chance to win a game, why don't they offer some of the bigger name games? I wouldn't download this game if they paid me $4 little along give them $4 for it.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Glen, it's not Valve who are offering these keys. I think the giveaway team are purchasing them for the community. If they started to buy the more expensive games it would gost a fortune. games costing lest than $3 with say 50 licenses are probably manageable, but any more and the costs start to become too expensive for the site to survive. I don't know for certain whether this is true, but the fact that every game we have been given the opportunity to win has been amongst the cheapest that Steam have to offer would lend itself to that assumption.

We get another classic game tomorrow that is unlimited and has no need of Steam. :)

My comment is not about the game as such but about this trend from real giveaway games and these win one of XX licenses on Steam. For me it changes the whole basis of GGOTD. Fine to have one of these in addition to a regular give away but not as the main attraction. Goodness only knows there must be enough free games out there to provide you with just two games a week

...................Moderator Comment........................

Apart from freeware games, no other game is truly free. Take for example all of the games you can get from MyPlayCity and other sites of that ilk. The owners of those sites have to pay the developer for every game downloaded. Granted, it's a small ampunt for each, but pay they do. They rely on the income from the advertising on their sites. Everytime you play one of their games your browser is automatically opened to thir site and they automatically earn cash. Those that end up with toolbars and other changes earn the sites even more. it's part of that income that is used to pay the developers of the games being given away to the community. Every game available on those sites is also being sold by sites such as Gamehouse, Big fish games and some even on Steam. There is almost always a price to be paid for anthing in this world. :)

I made a suggestion a few weeks ago that I fear got lost in the rash of disappointment over the STEAM controversy.

Can we possibly go back a few years and get some of those old games reoffered? Games that we have lost due to crashing or upgrading computers. I personally miss Nuclear Ball and Twinxoid, as well as the huge volume of arkanoids, platform games, etc. that we used to get offered on a regular basis.
Also, you mentioned that
"it could have also been the massive negative vibe from the community that scared them away. As soon as the site changed over we had hundreds of negative comments, with virtually nothing directed at the games. Then, when the giveaway team tried to find other sources of games we got yet another massive wave of negativity. Seriously, would you want to donate thousands of games to a community that was so negative? I certainly wouldn't."
Don't you think the giveaway team would have learned something from this? If the community members and the developers are staying away from the site with the changes that were made, maybe they should consider changing it back!

...................Moderator Comment........................

Ah Nuclear Ball and Twinxoid, I've still got both of those games, but only becasue I purchased them via Reflexive before it was sold off to amazon. Those games are actually available via Gametop, but they have had their names changed. (I assume they are still available). Nuclear Ball is known as A Ball on Gametop. I can't remeber the name that was given to Twinxoid.

Just checked. both are still available:

Nuclear Ball - now called A-Ball

Twinxoid - now called Geometry Ball

Just click on the new names to go to the appropriate page over at Gametop.... ..... Please do watch out when you are installing the games; make sure you uncheck the check boxes. I don't know how different Gametop is with respect to toolbars etc now. i've not downloaded from them in several years. :)

Bought Final antasy X/X-2 HD Remastered just this week so have enough to play for now ;P
Hope tomorrow is a better one

Thanks Mavadelo. I just got the new Homefront game. Still loading it up. Looking forwards to checking it out later today. Still playing Doom at the moment. I'm really looking forwards to the new Mirrors Edge and the Total War: Warhammer games. I just hope this second in the Homefront series is a true open world game and not like the first one that was scripted and linear. :)

"Since the site was upgraded back in February it appears we have lost two of the three big developers that gave us games regularily (I can't qualify this), Playrix and Immanitas used to give us games regularily, yet we haven't seen them since before the changes and only a couple of games from Alawar. The giveaway team have had to find other sources of games. "
Not even the devs are keen on the new look, then, not just the majority of users.
In its heyday, I used to write only positive comments here and still have a few games which I class as favourites that were d/l'd from here.
It pains me to say that I'll probably not bother coming here anymore, partly because of the layout but mostly because of the multiple hoops that must be jumped through to get a game now. I always appreciated the effort put into this site and the games that were offered, even if not my cup of tea, but not so much now, sadly. I don't have and don't want a steam account, nor do I want to spam my friends or open a twitter account or any of the other steps we have to take lately. It's not even Giveaway of the Day anymore - it's been "of the weekend" for a long time and, yes, I understand the reasons for this. However, it's not even "of the weekend" now since so many users are excluded by wont of the steps required. It saddens me to say that I haven't had that "what's the game today?" feeling for some time and will almost certainly stop looking here. Sad days.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your comment gb. Yes, it saddens me as well. That said, the game giveaway team are still striving to secure games from various outlets and we are still getting the traditional free games, just not as often as we used to. Personally I rarely keep the games given away here. Over the last three or four years I reckon I've only kept about four or five games, the rest are deleted once I've finished reviewing them.

The main reason for this is because I much prefer unusual indie games and AAA games like The Elder Scrolls franchise, the ArmA franchise, the Fallout franchise. The Whitcher franchise, The Total war franchise, the Just Cause franchise etc. I'm lucky that I can afford to 'waste' money on such games, most of which have cost me over $50 each plus extra for dlc. (for example I've easily spent £1500 on dlc for the Train simulator game since it was released several years ago (that's purchasing them when they are on sale - if I purchased every dlc for that game when they aren't on sale it would cost almost £3500) and more recently I've spent well over £500 each on the updated Microsoft Flight Sim X and one of my favorite games The Elder Scrolls Online since it was released over 2 years ago; (partly because I purchased three imperial editions (for me and my two teenage children). One of the editions was a limited edition that came with a leather bound art book and foot high statue of a Daedric Prince, plus all the subscription fees over the last two years to join the ESO plus account. and money spent on crown store items for me and my daughter). so why would i even bother to keep most of the games given away here. I wouldn't have the time to play them. :)

I've remained here for the past several years mainly because of the great community we have and not out of loyalty to the giveaway team, (who have barely said a thank you to me for my services over the eight years I've been moderating here and administering the forums). Sadly it seems like our community is slowly bleeding out. I am still hopeful that things will improve, which is why i'm still here. :)

What an funny joke - 100 Steam keys for millions of user..

And if I really want to have it - I'll pay the price.

Without Facebook - without Twitter - without Newsletter!

...................Moderator Comment........................

There are not millions of community members. At its height there were around 40 000 community members. though on average anywhere between 10 to 20 thousand community members would download free games. since the site changes its look back in February the largest download was 6 thousand, but on average downloads have been between 2 and 4 thousand for each game (apart from those limited licenses). One game got less than 800 downloads, so the odds of winning a license have dramatically improved for those that are interested. The one that was put up a few weeks ago gave odds of 5 to 3, that is for every 5 applicants three won a key. :)

Pentium, 1600 persons I guess jumped for the 100 keys. Yes if you want to go ahead and pay for the Steam...Give some away free so that others will buy- sounds like standard business to me..I agree with you that at times we don't want only facebook and steam games, but regular ones as well..

...................Moderator Comment........................

Steam is free. And no one forces anyone to buy anymore games. It may be tempting due to the sales that are always present, but that's down to the individuals will power. That said, I'm the worst person as I'm now a confirmed Steamophile despite hating game clients several years ago. :)

Sorry, that is somehow really STUPID! A 4-$-game and to win 100 lizences... Do they get their free adverts in THIS way???

For me this "winning lizences" would make more sense with more expensive games...

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Nidda, I agree, more expensive games would be more of a pull, but I think the giveaway team are buying these licenses for the community, they are not being given away. As I've mentioned elsewhere a few weeks ago it's getting harder to get free games from developers because they have found other ways to spread their wares such as via the indie bundles. Most of the big well established bundles earn millions for each bundle they put out. A decent percentage of that goes to the developers, the other free game sites such a sMyPlayCity pay the developers a portion of their earnings from the in site advertising for every game that is downloaded, so earnings from those sites are much higher than from this site because the giveaway team pay a minimal amount to be able to give licenses away.

Since the site was upgraded back in February it appears we have lost two of the three big developers that gave us games regularily (I can't qualify this), Playrix and Immanitas used to give us games regularily, yet we haven't seen them since before the changes and only a couple of games from Alawar. ...................Moderator Comment........................

Maybe; however, it could have also been the massive negative vibe from the community that scared them away. As soon as the site changed over we had hundreds of negative comments, with virtually nothing directed at the games. Then, when the giveaway team tried to find other sources of games we got yet another massive wave of negativity. Seriously, would you want to donate thousands of games to a community that was so negative? I certainly wouldn't. :)
