#37 Don Hill.

I posted the original comment, not Fran about people might be downvoting this game not because it is a war game, but because it deals with a real-life horror. So I felt it was perhaps unfair of you to attack her for hoping some day that the world might be better than it is, or have you given up on the idea?

The country is irrelevant, as most countries have had horrific attacks on them. Would a Chinese software developed produce a game based on the "Rape of Nanking" for example? There are sensitive subjects for EVERY country and basing a game on one of them is likely to hurt your sales in that country. I am English, and I do not like the choice of such a tasteless name and I feel very sorry for those who will be offended by this choice of title.

Please don't use the old "all Brits would be speaking German if it wasn't for..." whoever. Every country could not only say the same thing about someone else, but could have the same thing said about them, as pretty much every country has been at war with someone. So it's pointless and also offensive to both countries involved. I am very much a supporter of the military myself and I do give thanks to them for the wonderful jobs they have done, but I do not find war a wonderful thing, more that it is the last barrier when defending ourselves or others who are too weak to defend themselves.

Matt Byng #44, I know what you mean about suddenly your submarine seems all powerful! What happens is that you shoot the tokens that give you auto-fire and also quick reload. Suddenly you seem to have the firepower of a whole fleet.

Nice shooter game. Graphics are good. Game play is fluid and challenging at times.

PROS: Nice graphics, Motivational quotes between each round, fluid gameplay.

CONS: Really insensitive name. What's the next game called "Nagasaki Nukers") (Hirosima Heroes") (9/11 Flight Simulator)?

With a different name (maybe "Sea Defender") it would be a enjoyable shooter game.

Thank you Alawar for another great shoot em up game. I love fun shooters and this is a must have for me. I almost missed it but thanks to our clocks springing forward and the website still being an hour behind I managed to down load and install it wahoo....

now I am off to play it..

Thanks you Game Give Away Of The Day for beinging us another wonderful Alawar game. thank you Alawar for letting Game give Away of the day to give it away...

And last but not Least thank you Whiterabbit and all other posters for your great reviews and thoughts. I give this a thumbs up for being a fun shoot em up but I would normally give it a thumbs down for the title and what Pearl harbour represents there are many people who will have a problem on the title of this game I am one of them.

I like the game but I do think that the Game's title needs to be reworked. I do not know what else to call it but I think Pearl harbour Fire on the Water to be of bad taste.

I hope Alawar takes into account how many of the game reviewers today posted that they like myself find the name of this game objectionable and that we feel it needs to be changed to something less objectionable

What that new less objectionable name should be I don't know. perhaps we can hold a open straw poll forum to post ideas for a new name for this game

Concerning speculation about the down-votes; WWII was a long time ago. Germany and Japan are now two of our best allies. Anyone who has a problem with the subject matter because of the event that it is based on, is being just a wee bit too sensitive. And not "liking" the genre is a very poor reason for a down-vote. Reserve down-votes for more substantive reasons, please. Dang, it's FREE! Thank you, Stephen.

#28, tremendous ideas jboy!!! GAOTD, THANK YOU for consistently supplying FREE software to us, and THANK YOU for taking the time and effort to try each program and give us the benefit of your experiences!!!

As for the extremely high negative votes, once again, the VAST MAJORITY of them have voted without so much as downloading the game, let alone playing it!!! People, at least have the decency to actually DOWNLOAD and PLAY the game BEFORE rating it!!!

And to the ridiculously thin skinned people that find fault with the game due to it being "war" based, or complain because the game uses weaponry that was not around in 1941, GOOD GRIEF!!! It's a GAME, not REAL LIFE!!! And to those that are concerned for the feelings of the families that lost loved ones at Pearl Harbor, once again, THIS IS A GAME, NOT REAL LIFE!!! And btw, my dad survived the attack at Pearl Harbor while two of my uncles were killed there.

One of the most tactless ideas for a game I've ever seen. Not only was this a real life incident where people died but it also kicked off a massive war which included and ended with the a massive loss of lives. To trivialize it as a game subject is shameful, and to actually give it air time on GGOTD is poor judgement at best.

What will we get next week a flight simulator over New York based in 2001?

Twenty minute download via DSL; installed and runs fine in Vista 32.

I don't understand the complaints of "violence". This is just a generic arcade shooter, no worse than shooting plastic ducks with a BB gun at the county fair. There is no "war" here, no one even shoots back at you; it's merely a variety of ships zipping back and forth in front of you and you shoot them. Could just as easily be a bunch of balloons and you throw darts at them. (I recall another recent shooter giveaway which garnered bad votes for "violence" - Magic Maze; a cartoon cat with a cartoon blunderbuss shooting cartoon pellets at cartoon dogs and stars. I still play it occasionally.)

That said, graphics and sound are good, control and gameplay are good. Nothing special, but it loads quickly, is fun to play, and is great for a few minutes diversion while awaiting the tea kettle to boil. Definite thumbs up from me.

The game downloaded easily. It installed easily, per the instructions, on my WIN7/64/SP1 system with 4GB RAM. It installed just where the instructions said it would.

I had no problems playing the game. All the necessary components were apparently present. The instructions were simple, and the game only needs simple instructions. Aim, click and launch torpedo, and try to make hits to sink ships.

I liked having as many torpedos as I wanted. The more I played the easier it got to make the hits. This is good, because as the levels advanced the ship traffic became frenzied. It was easy to sink the closer ships, and harder and more satisfying to hit the huge ships farther away.

The graphics were good, and the title sequence was very good. The ships looked like ships, the scenery looked realistic, and it was fun to see my targets break up and sink. It was helpful that they sank fast, because otherwise the sinking ships would have blocked my shots at my next targets.

The sound quality was good. It would have been nice to hear the torpedos hit and the ships break apart. The music was okay, not irritating but pretty monotonous.

It is a simple, fun, and violent game. It is not realistic to the point where it felt like a real battle, or that people were dying. It is a game, not a political statement. I lost a family member in WWII to a Japanese shiper. Blowing up the ships did not make me feel better or worse about my Great Uncle or the Japanese. It is just a game, not a medium for reliving the realities of the horrors of war.

My young special needs son knows the difference between reality and pretend in playing games. It wasn't hard for me to see the difference in this game, either.

Overall, I think this is a good example of the shoot-em-up genre of games. It is simple, explosive, and doesn't have a big learning curve. You can just jump in and have fun. My congratulations and thanks to the game maker for producing a quality product, and to Game GAOTD for making it available.

Reasons why people aren't downloading it?

- Size

- Historical inaccuracy - A battleship battle in WW2 at Pearl Harbor? Never happened!!!

- Weapon inaccuracy - "patrol the dangerous waters near Pearl Harbor in a boat armed to the teeth with torpedoes, lasers and nukes!" - Really? In 1941?

Finally, timing - The actual Pearl Harbor attack occurred on a Sunday morning too.

4 Strikes! Out!

If the game is actually any good, the developer should redo it without the attempted Pearl Harbor cash-in. That's just screaming out "Turkey!".

Weird, weird, weird. My torpedo boat suddenly became the deadliest warship ever created and began spewing fire rockets at the warships sailing by. In a few minutes I sank more ships than were sunk during all of WWII. I'll have to play this game again to find out why my boat suddenly started shooting rockets instead of torpedoes. Maybe I'll read the instructions. This is a great game to play for a few minutes at a time when you're taking a break from something else.

Whiterabbit, I d/l the most recent audio drivers but still kept getting the error, “BASS_ChannelSetAttributes function not found in my audio library”. Game would not run. I was running the game from a shortcut from my desktop since the game didn't put one there. When I ran the game from the Pearl Harbor folder, the game ran! Wow. But after playing eight levels, it got very boring. Deleted. They also need to rename the game to "Sub Commander" or something similar and get rid of "Pearl Harbor".

This is one of those games I will play when I need a change of pace and as was suggested earlier to let of some steam. I haven't rated it, but have two problems with the game right off the bat; while there were some enemy submarines outside the Pearl Harbon net, there were no enemy war ships involved with the attack on Pearl Harbor. And ice in Pearl Harbor? Really?

Other than that it will be a good diversion.

Not a game for calm and thinkfull days - but it makes fun, so what. I will keep it on my harddisk and will play it when I want to just for a few "points" to get better... Something different as "I will save the world only with a dagger in my hand and my pants on"

Game play is smooth, and graphics aren't bad (for half a GB I would hope so), but the game itself is just boring. With the exception of the "don't miss" levels, there is just no skill involved. Just click the button as much as you can, don't bother aiming, all of the ships will cross your path eventually and die.... Music gets annoying after a while, but you can't turn it off w/o losing sound effects either... All in all I give this a 4 out of 10 - just not worth it.

While @Fran may choose to hide their head in the sand and hope that one day all the peoples of the world will link arms and sing "Kumbaya," the fact remains that there's more than a few people in the world who would love nothing more than to see ALL of us "Westerners" (including Fran) writhing in pain as we die horrible deaths - all in the name of THEIR ideology. There is no "saving" or "converting" such people - they've been indoctrinated since birth to kill and destroy, and nothing we can do or say will ever change their minds. As it has often been said, "The only thing that can stop a BAD guy with a gun is a GOOD guy with a gun."

Of course ALL "moral" people DETEST war and the terrors it visits on everyone involved - combatants and non-combatants alike. There's a reason why our Greatest Generation generally doesn't like to talk about anyything they saw and were forced to do under the circumstances they were forced to deal with. But almost to a person they will tell you that in order to survive they had to "turn off" their sense of "morality" and become something they internally detested - a "killing machine" with the primary objective being to kill as many "bad guys" and break as much of the "bad guys'" stuff as they could.

Put simply, there is no room for "morality" on the battlefield - it's a matter of "kill or be killed," and when the bullets are whizzing past your head you have only one goal - to survive! And unfortunately that usually meant that you had to shoot the people who are shooting at you! World War II vets are usually quick to admit that. And what most of those vets are STILL trying to deal with are the memories of the things they were forced to do - the sights, sounds, smells and even tastes of being the cause of another person's death. That's something that no "moral" person wishes for, but at the same time those vets also understood that there are times when it may become necessary.

Had they all decided that their "morals" prohibited their participation (AKA "conscientious objectors"), then Stephen would most likely be posting his game reviews in German, and we would be playing even more barbaric games by the light of a lamp whose shade used to be someone's skin!

So go tend your garden, Fran - and say a silent prayer to whatever deity you hold to be the master (or mistress) of everything for the people who are willing to pledge their very lives to keep you safe and free enough to harvest that garden of yours when everything ripens!

With regard to the game itself: While it's quite substantial in size, I'm sure the reason is because of the number of high-def graphics involved, and since there are so many levels in the game it only makes sense that the overall size would be so great. I suppose this game qualifies as a "first-person shooter," with all of the anxiety-producing scenarios where a sense of urgency is imparted on the player to complete a mission before time expires.

Over thirty years ago I came to realize that the next generation of fighter pilots and tank jockeys were being trained in the pizza parlors all across America, financed by frustrated parents at a quarter at a time! Now, with the sophisticated weapons systems that exist, they are often operated through a computerized interface that doesn't differ very much from a video game, but with one major difference - when you press "fire," REAL PEOPLE actually DIE as a result! That's something that EACH player has to reconcile to themselves, and most importantly of all, remember and respect the line between "play" and "reality."

Stepping off the soap box now to allow someone else a turn...

War is a very sensitive subject however given the violence of some war games on the PC and the major consoles I'd say this is soft core violence at the very least. It's not visually violent. Alawar continues to make hit games for families without pushing the violent agenda that some others games in this genre present.

I found it a good challenge and it felt like a game you would play in the arcade. It was similar to a PC game I played called Pearl Harbor Zero Hour. It was released in the arcade too at one point.

Thank you Alawar , GGOTD and WhiteRabbit-UK for providing excellent game giveaways and honest synopisis / reviews of how the games play / work. etc

you'll find several possible solutions if you gogle the problem. Also try updating your audio drivers. To find out which audio driver you use type dxdiag in the search field and open up the sound tabs. Google the audio driver and dowbnload, and install; hopefully, that will fix the problem.

maybe some negatives were for the non-historic weapons ? there were neither nukes nor lasers at 1941 pearl harbor. maybe another name would have satisfied these people. i think this is more of a target shoot than a semi-reinactment of 1941. too many of target shoots around. my eye-hand coordination is too bad for this game, so as nice as it is it isnt for me.

SMUPs aren't my thing so I won't be downloading today's game but I wanted to share a thought with you, Stephen and the GG team, based on the comments about the early negatives today.

Perhaps when giving a thumb's up or down rating there could be a dropdown menu where the person rating must choose one or more of the reasons for their rating. For example:
- Past experience with game
- Type of game (e.g., HOG. Match3)
- Subject matter or theme
- Past experience with publisher

Another option would be to go the way of a shopping site (e.g., Amazon) where one must be signed in, rates 1-5 stars and comments.

Just a thought. I'm not sure if you have any interest in making such changes to the site but either of those would alleviate the mystery of a generic rating for both you and the publishers and identify the basis of the scoring.

As always, thanks for your efforts here.

Thumbs up just for the originality! I've had time to play one quick game only, but I can already say I like it. The only drawbacks so far seem to be icebergs off Hawaii (though I couldn't encounter them personally, they must appear later in the career mode) and the music you can't turn off without turning off the ocean sounds with it. And, hey, if you don't like this type of games, don't vote it down just because it's not your genre.

Hi, I recon that with this particular Game - It is to do with it's choice of Name and Description - using words like 'terror', 'fire', 'armed to teeth with torpedoes, lasers (with exception of 'nukes' perhaps) a.s.o, and on top of it Alawar making it.. too realistic(?) - that may contribute to a flood of feelings about the whole Set-Up of this, let's face it - II World War Battle??

The conception of 'killing an enemy' (baddies) is not exactly a new idea in games and while majority of players have no issues shooting (or nuking:) enemy in shape of aliens, pirates, evil spirits, gangsters, or something completely silly like giant tomatoes, pumpkins etc, here - the 'enemy' and sense of power overcoming it - should better be left to..films alone?? Or - make it clear from the start, so there is no confusion: This is the II W.W Battle Game? These games do exist, but negatives most probably reflect the fact that this Game is not a typical 'family game', it really belongs to specific genre!?

Thanks Stephen for giving Your review and concentrating Your efforts on 'mechanics' of it, but don't be surprised this Game is also heavily laced with so called moral stand.. It happens from time to time on sister GAOTD with less 'friendly' Softwers e.g when it invites Customers to spy on own children, spouses, employees, correct?

Have a good Sunday Everyone, I'm personally not interested in this game and to 'take my mind off real world events' (how true!) - I'm shortly off to the garden, it rally begs for attention anyway:)

Ok Win 8.1 x64 Pro. Full screen, sound sliders. Liked the change of pace from Match 3. Arcade like shooter from fixed point out to the sideways ships coming across from both sides. As mentioned it's good for casual 'fire at em' gaming. Lead the distant targets, blast in center to get nearby hits of ships criss crossing. Basic look & feel but no matter since gets job done for the short bursts. 8/10 for fans.
Oh took half hour on cable, maybe just me or it's busy.

"Wow, negatives only three minutes after the game was posted."

File Size: 416 MB

At least I suspect that's the Why. It's not GOTD's fault of course, but even when/if they have broadband folks know it's gonna be a slog of a download, rather than the usual game that's finished downloading by the time you read the comments.

"... there might be a lesson here not to base things that are supposed to be fun on real tragedy, especially if that tragedy happened in one of the countries you are hoping to sell to."

Not disagreeing really -- don't know myself -- but there are an awful lot of higher end games focused on war or conflicts & lots of them dealing with real history or current tensions. When I Google bf4 I get 14 mill hits... NOT saying this is anything similar except in the broader sense of the subject.

"Didn’t know there were Ice Floes in Hawaii….."

Why not? :)

They've had aliens in Hawaii [Battleship], probably zombies [an assumption on my part since they seem to be everywhere], super advanced tech in the 40's [Captain America], so why not a little ice? :)

This is not my genre so I didn't download or try. Therefore, I didn't vote either way.

I just want to say that this game is available 24/7 from both Jenkat Games and Gametop. Both sites have their plusses and minuses but if you do decide to get this and decide too late, you can get it.

Thank you for finally getting a shoot-em-up game. I really appreciate all the games you've gotten for us, but I do like the shooters. This is a pretty good one.

I've played a very similar, if not identical, game where you command a US submarine. Quite addictive for a time-waster! Definitely a keeper for me.

Guys, guys, guys, it's a GAME, not an advert promoting warfare, please leave politics out where it belongs, with the pinheaded politicians! "War" games are amongst the most popular and commercially successful games out there (COD series, MOH series etc) why all the angst about war on here?

Download it. Play it, comment on it. If you don't want to keep it, delete it!

Whiterabbit, keep up the good work mate, I've been a casual user of this site for years and you have played a major part in it's success!

Downloaded and set up great on my Windows 7 Dell laptop, game plays great on it, so I went and put it on my Dell desktop computer, which should have not been an issue due to it exceeds the needed requirements, the game will load with no problems, but when clicking to begin playing, it hesitates for 3 seconds and then my computer restarts, would have been awesome to been able to play it on a larger screen....
