The Game:
As usual with games in this genre, you get the opportunity to make a number of adjustments to the game’s environment and difficulty level. Slider bars are available to set the volume levels for background music and sound effects including the spoken dialogue that features in the game. There are options to play the game in full screen mode with a custom cursor and keeping the aspect ratio. You can also opt to play in Casual mode with a fast Hint and Skip recharging plus sparkles to identify active zones or Expert mode with a slower recharge and no sparkles.

An introductory sequence, featuring spoken dialogue and animated characters, lays the groundwork for the story line before you are called into action. You can skip this sequence and any subsequence conversational interludes with a mouse click. There is an optional tutorial that explains about the different mouse cursors which indicate when specific actions are available and other aspects of the game.

For most of the game you will be in Adventure mode as your characters investigates different locations in alternate dimensions that you access through a strange machine. The view of the current scene will feature a journal in the lower left corner while the right corner holds the rechargeable Hint feature. The space between these two tools will be taken up by an inventory which remains concealed until its area is invaded by the mouse cursor. Generally items in the inventory serves a single purpose but occasionally there will be an object that can be used more than once and it will automatically return to the inventory after each use. Concealed in the top left corner of the screen is the game’s menu option and this, like the inventory, appears when the mouse cursor approaches it.

The various scenes, whether in the House of Illusions or one of the alternate dimensions, that you need to visit in order to solve the mystery, are well drawn with some interesting animations. From time to time you will encounter other characters. They are always willing to chat with their dialogue delivered by a voice actor. The dialogue will also appear on screen in text format. These characters are generally willing to provide assistance to help you with your task but they do expect you to perform a task for them, such as supplying a monocle, thimble or tarot cards, before you get their help.

Hidden Object game play follows a fairly standard pattern. You will be asked to find 15 items presented in a text list that are located within a cluttered, close-up scene. Some scenes are reused but there is variety in the list of items to locate. Occasionally some of the items in the list will be coloured yellow to indicate that an additional action will be required before the object can be located. You might need to open a container, create a pair of objects or repair a particular item. As a reward for finding all the objects in a list, you will receive one of them to be added to the inventory.

As there is no map feature, you might feel that you are left to your own devices with regards to plotting a route between locations. Fortunately the Hint feature can offer assistance as to which direction to move to next. In such instances, the Hint feature will not need to recharge after being used. The Hint feature will also pinpoint areas of interest and, sometimes, indicate the tool or object you need to use as well as identifying an object not yet found in a Hidden Object scene. It will not help when you are attempting to solve a puzzle.

Some effort has been made to integrate the numerous puzzles into the game’s story line with its emphasis on magic. While the Hint feature is disabled during puzzle solving, there is a Skip option plus outlines which can appear to help with positioning when you need to create something.

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to Nox. Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000 for Microsoft Windows. It details the story of Jack, a young man from Earth who is pulled into a high fantasy parallel universe and has to defeat the evil sorceress Hecubah and her army of Necromancers to return home. Depending on the player's choice of character class at the beginning of the game (warrior, conjurer, or wizard), the game follows three largely different linear storylines, each leading to its unique ending. If you've ever played the early RPG's such as Baldurs Gate and Icewind dale or the early Fallout series and liked them, you'll probably like this game as well. It's 16 years old now, but still looks pretty good for it's age. This type of game has held it's appeal and looks far better than the early first person games. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately the multipler portion of the game is no longer acvtive, at least the online portion. i think the local network will still allow players to play together.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing the game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made by the community below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

If today's game wasn't to your liking, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee (from your favorite coffee house) via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.

I've still to send out some Steam keys to those that commented on previous weeks games. I apologise for the delay. I've been literally run off my feet for the past few weeks with lots of issues, problems with tenants, legal issues, tax etc. At least my kids have finished their exams for this year. I am not going to run the free keys until I've caught up with stuff. Rest assured my personal giveaways will return soon. I have thousands of games to give away and will be adding a significant number to the list that is posted above soon. I'm so far behind with everything at the moment, continuing would just confuse my morphine addled brain even more than it is already. :) I will resume giving more keys away once i've sent out all of those I owe to community members. Hopefully sooner than later; I just need a few quite days to get my act together, but I'm not making any promises as to how long it will take. To those that have already qualified for keys and haven't received a key/keys for the game/games they requested, please be patient. Also, remember I need to see what you want via the thread I've linked too above. If you've had problems signing into your forum account, let me know what your forum name is and i'll resend you a new password. If you can't get into the forums at all, please email me on Whiterabbit-uk@hotmail.co.uk and title the email with Whiterabbits game giveaways in capital letters. That way i'll see them easily. To those that have thanked me for keys, if I've not replied I will as soon as I'm able. To those that gave me their Steam names, unfortunately some of them were not viable, so, if you've not received a friends request from me, it's not for want of trying; instead you can send a friends request to my main Steam account which is Whiterabbit-uk and/or my secondary Steam account which is Slickwhiterabbit. Please email me as well with your Steam name because I get a lot of requests due to the high number of games in my Steam library and more so because I have quite a lot of spare games in my inventory as well as thousand of trading cards, TF2 items and CS:GO items plus other stuff that people for some reason think I will give away if they ask. I love giving, but I don't like being pre-empted by community members begging. Becasue of this I've started to ignore requests for quite long periods. If you send the request without letting me know via email i may miss the request.

I'd like to to give a massive thank you to Whizzy (or Mavadelo his Steam name), who has created a review site for me. I am talking to him via Team Speak over the coming weeks while he tutors me in the ins and outs of the site. The site won't go live right away as I want to post lots of game reviews. It will be a combination of arcade and AAA game reviews, some old and some new, divided into appropriate genres. We intend to avoid any advertising, so the site should be safe to peruse without worrying about clicking on links that may send to to rougue sites or ad's. I will also try to post reviews of new releases. At least those that I purchase. For example, I've just started playing the new version of Mirrors Edge: Catalyst that was released on Friday. It's an excellent sequel. If you liked the original you'll love the new one. For those who don't know anything about Mirror's Edge it's a parkour style game where, living outside of the law, you run and jump across high rise buildings as well as in and around buildings delivering messages to the underworld. It's set in a dystopian future where conglomerates rule the world. You can see the launch trailer (showing a fast paced cameo of the game) HERE. It may even be one of my first AAA game reviews on the new site.

I will still continue to post my reviews here and moderate as always. I'm hoping the new site will invigorate me, which can only be a good thing with respect to my reviews here, as I have lost a lot of impetus over the last few years, and especially recently since the changes. I will be having regular giveaways of my own on the new site, but nothing like what we get here as my giveaways are all paid for by me and will be limited to one or a few of each game offered. I do have several keys for some games, but most of the keys are one offs or at the most a couple of keys for each game. As mentioned previously, I have around 10 000 Steam keys and several hundred other keys for other platforms such as Origin, Itch.io and Desura, many of which will be up for grabs. Most of the games are low budget indie games and arcade games (up to $20), but I do have lots of more expensive Indie and AAA game keys to give away, (most will be awarded in exchange for appropriate reviews and other comments about games in general). Some of the AAA games I have spare that will be available to the community include X-Com:Enemy Unknown, Civilization V, Aliens vs Predator, ArmA II & 3, Batman Arkham City and Arkham Origins, Baldurs Gate Enhanced, Deadly Premonition, Battlefield 3, Gas Guzzlers Extreme Gold, All three of the original Company of Heroes, Defense Grid 2, several copies of Call of Juarez, Disciples II: Gallean's Return, King Arthur - The Role-playing Wargame, Max Payne 3, Dragon Age Origins, Far Cry 3, Front Lines: Fuel of War, Grid, a couple of the GTA titles, Rage, Omerta - City of Gangsters, the fantastic Flatout franchise, Mount & Blade: Warband and lots of others. I haven't posted a list of my Steam keys, but you can see the spare games I have in my main Steam account HERE , there are roughly 350 games, quite a few of which will be up for grabs at some point in time. There is a massive collection of indie and Arcade titles in the ten thousand spare keys available as well, bvut I don't have an alphabetical list of those (I've been working on creating one for over ayear and am a long way off completing the document as it's tedious work, so I don't spend much time on it at the moment.

Recent games deals (now called The Weekly Roundup of Game Deals) can be found HERE.

The Daily Indie Game is offering a free Steam key for 'Crystals of Time' a HOG. There are 100 000 keys available, so there's a very good chance everyone who applies will get a key. You have to do something similar to the limited keys you get via the game giveaway, but there's no waiting. Once you've completed the tasks you get your Steam key immediately. It's basically first come first served. You'll find the deal over in the game discussion forums HERE .

Wow, Whiterabbit, sounds like your new site is going to be fantastic! A new bookmark in my browser, most probably.
And I'm very glad to hear that you will still be moderating GGOTD.

:( it will be some time away yet. but will post details once it's up and running. You can access the site now, but as I've only posted a few part finished reviews and there's still layout to sort, it would be pointless posting now..

Ok I have been playing this game with my daughter and it has been a lot of fun. The story line is good and the graphics are nice and don't distract from the game. The only issues that we came across were:

Finger tip/ pointer has to be exactly on object or it will not work
Some guidelines as to where to go or what to do were not available so had to use the hint button to get you moving in the right direction
Currently we are in the police office again and told to zoom into the file cabinet and the message that says this does not go away from the screen and the game freezes and tells you to look at drawer even with hint button but it will not allow you to look into file drawer. So we decided to try things to look into it and nothing worked. Then we tried to exit file cabinet and it will not let you leave. So we exited game and restarted scene and same thing still happens. I even went so far as to reboot the computer the game is on to help fix issue and it did not work. This game was enjoyable until now and I don't know if I will ever get to the end of game.

...............................Moderator Comment.....................................

Thank you for your feedback . Unfortunately I've only played part way through and didn't come across the issue you mention. Have you tried playing the game with a different screen resolution?

Why was my comment deleted? I had a legitimate question regarding whether or not anyone else had a Trojan alert during the install process. I wanted to know so that I could take 'games.exe' out of quarantine if that what was keeping the game from running. The moderator could have at least reassured me that this was a 'clean' game and that there was nothing to worry about. I know that this offer has expired but I am hoping SOMEBODY will give me an answer. I waited 12+ hours for this program to download; I would like to be a to play it, but not at the expense of getting a Trojan. If this comment is deleted too, I will have to assume that there is some kind of censorship going on. There wouldn't be any reason for that, though. I was not being malicious, just really needed an answer to my question.

I actually had to wait for my open bandwidth time to download this which is a period between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am. At 11:00 at night it took only 10 minutes to fully download and activation took less then 2 minutes - this is completely normal. To me that means that the problem earlier today could be a server overload problem. If the ones that can wait would wait, many of the problem could resolve J/S. There's a lot of "it should just work" attitude in the comments (on a freebie no less) Ok, now onto the game, I didn't get to play it all the way through but I can tell the whole family will enjoy it. I even got my friend to download, she's addicted to these sorts of games. Beautiful graphics fun game play - ty for the great game.

Hi,
I did it get it to open after long download. The graphics are great. I could not get the fish. I put on regular cursor and clicked on perspective or whatever the option. After several more times I did get the fish. I felt like there was a glitch with it and not meant to take that long. I do like a challenge and not just click on items from a list, but for them to be hung up for some time wouldn't make sense. Once I got past the fish, everything followed in order without much challenge. Only one or two things go backwards, everything goes forward so far. I couldn't continue right now and will soon. I went through to the circus and.....
Thank you!! and have a great week!

Seems like it might be a nice game, but right off the bat it's aggravating because something does't work. In the first HOG, the fishing pole - it doesn't catch any fish, and I have tried about 100 times. This game is going in the trash can, because you can't progress without finishing the HOG.

I have to echo some of the negative comments I've read. I downloaded twice; it downloaded very slow on an Extremely High Speed Connection. Attempted to Install twice; failed to launch both times.

I should know better than to trust a MyPlayCity game.

This game took a while to download, but I was very pleased that it was a direct and not through email or Steam!
The visuals are wonderful and I enjoyed playing, as I enjoy puzzle/hidden object games. This was a winner for me.

DEEPLY unhappy!

I downloaded this game directly from MyPlayCity because of the long-download-time comments, and because when I download MPC games through GGOTD, I get an odd "Click to enable extension" greyed screen (Google Chrome browser). The direct download took 15 minutes, but I still got the "Click to enable extension" (just click through or click Cancel to get rid of that); and the loading pop-up where you have to uncheck "Set MPC as homepage", "Set MPC as search page".

MPC games are always free and I've never had malware from them (my computer wears a condom under a haz-mat suit with a bomb-squad turnout on top, so I'd know. Yes, that does slow it down), but resetting your homepage and search page is a pain, so be careful to uncheck the boxes. the MPC homepage opening when you exit the game is a small price to pay for some great free games, so I play along by disabling AdBlocker on that site so they get some ad revenue from me.

Thanks for the great review, Whiterabbit. MPC have some "meh" games and a few duds, but they don't have enough of a description for you to tell: this game is beautifully done, a pleasure to look at, and an easy HOG with lots of good puzzles -- a gem!

Thank you for your feedback Mac, please 'scuze the extremely late moderation. Apart from the check boxes you get when installing from MPC the game is exactly the same.

If this is a 'clean' download, why did Panda antivirus detect a Trojan in the games.exe file during the install process? Panda quarantined the file and the game will not load. Now I am wondering whether I should take games.exe out of quarantine so the program will run, just in case this is one of those false/positive things that happens with antivirus programs. Has anyone else had that problem?

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. Tried Bigfish and site never opened. That MyPlayCity did work and pretty fast compares to the mega month download here! Geez. Do be careful w/ MPC junk 'extras'. Uncheck it all & kill desktop icons other than the game made one. Installer did seem to auto install to C drive w/ no choice. Guess could copy from C to D if want to save SSD space.
Very sweet graphics and gameplay in easy mode. Really gets you into it. Usual side puzzles that can skip but usually solve them once catch theme. This HOG+ will be kept. 9/10 for fans. Thanks guys for pointing d/l options.

9 hours to download and then at least 30 mins stuck on the activating dialog box, I'm starting to wonder if it's even going to activate today since it's still sitting there. This is ridiculous, I really do hope you figure out what the problem is so this can be fixed. At this point anyone who didn't start downloading it atleast 5 hours ago or start downloading it now using a download manager, won't even be able install this game in time. It's no wonder so many others just gave up rather than wait.

Thought something was wrong, then came in and saw the comments. Wow! Is it worth it? and why so long?
Probably won't get it, since download will run past the time to get it, because we were celebrating father's day!
This site has been so disappointing lately! Don't know what's up!!

Thanks for reminding us that this is included with the Hidden Objects 6-in-1 collection. I purchased a bundle that included this just last week, and have just installed it on Steam (joining the 4-in-1 and 5-in-1 collections).

I was glad to find out that "Panopticon: Path of Reflections" had a casual mode. I found the music to be very soothing and sometimes eerie. The voices all were very expressive and intriguing.

The journal really adds to the storyline. I really like the story itself. I found myself reading the journal on every entry. There is even a love interest associated with our hero.

I particularly liked the yellow items in the hidden object scenes. I like having to put things together. It gives an added twist.

I appreciated being able to hover over the items in the inventory for a description. The coin looked like a brooch to me. I usually check for a description for my own peace of mind.

I tried to post an improvement in the feedback area, but I couldn't get it to take. The only thing that I would change is the font in the journal. I found the cursive style font difficult to read.

The game was easy for me to follow and the hint function helped out twice. There are definitely good hints in this game. The graphics are very crisp and easy on the eyes.

Thanks MyPlayCity and GGOTD for the gift. Stephen, I want to thank you for the heads up on the Daily Indie Game offering. I was able to get a Steam key for "Crystals of Time". It looks like a good one. You know how I love HOGs.

Why would you put such a problem game on GOTD. I have d/loaded it, extracted it, it says it is activated, never went to the activation page, set up a desk icon and when I click on it in hopes of playing the game I get Odysseus" Long Way Home. I do not like that game, got it back in 2014. Am I upset, oh yes, I have danced around this download all day thinking I would get the game offered. I'm passed disappointed! My Play City was kind enough to put two other game icons on as well, so I just deleted them along with their icon. What a waste of my day!

Took HOURS to download - then got error message 'failed to launch the program'

I would like to play this - are you going to fix this or extend it? Saw both of those messages below!!!!

Iris Lewars, I (and others here) downloaded from myplaycity.com with no problem and no waiting. It's a good game! Just make sure to uncheck the boxes that ask you to change your home page, etc.

I'm having a different problem than what I'm reading from other people... I finally managed to download it (took hours!) and now I can't install it. Tried on my old faithful XP SP3 and get an error of "Failed to launch program". Tried on Vista and it just sits there (has been for like 25 minutes so far). Guess I'm just not meant to have it... :(

Okay, after 30 minutes of sitting there and staring at the "activating" screen, the Vista system finally allowed me to install it. Not so with the XP SP3. I remember this happening long ago with another large game giveaway and thought the problem had been fixed- apparently not. Guess it's not important to fix this for us outdated XP users... Sucks.

Trying 2 b Helpful, this happened to me and I disabled my antivirus program (AVG). It installed fine after that. I hope this helps.

I would really like to try this hidden object game out. Alawar has some nice stuph out there. Cant understand why my system keeps telling me it will be a 6+ hour download. What the hell is that about? I would say keep up the good work but someone dropped the ball on this one.

This thing is so phukd.... I finally get the d/l done and now the goddamn thing 'unable to connect' or 'failed to launch program'. This is after I full stopped on AVG, the only thing I've ever had to do before and sht still don't work. Love wasting the entire day babysitting this worthless piece of sht. F this site! I used to deal with it but no more.

I wound up getting a completely different game. I got The Longest Journey, which I already have, and which is a long and, in my opinion, dull game.

It took hours and several tries to get the thing finally downloaded and now I'm getting a different game! The name is right and I didn't change anything when I ran the setup.

So what gives?

SublimeOne, I'll be happy to swap with you I got Odysseus: Long Way Home, didn't like it the first time I got it. The Longest Journey was great, have disk but don't think it will work on my Win 8.1.

11 hours to download this. I always do this in the morning when there is not so much traffic so I waited 10 mins and it says 7 hours. No way. Go to MPC and it downloads in 10mins tops. I see everyone else is also having problems. And this is not the first time I've had this problem.

Damn - I totally forgot about this - I am on holiday in Vienna and now it says downloading is longer than giveaway time.

Thinks for those who pointed to My Play City *phew*

I cannot tell anything about the game until at least Tuesday cause I won't be back home before.

Had to pause and resume the download to get the file. Took about 7 hours. Clicked on Setup and took about 17 minutes to install. Opened the game fine. No time to play today.
Looks like a great game.
Will repost if any problem.
Thank You again GGOTD!

It did take a while to download (5 hrs) and I was able to use my computer for other things while it downloaded. After it downloaded I installed without any problems to my 7 yr old windows 10 computer. I've only played thru a few screens but it looks like it will be a lot of fun. The graphics are great. I love Hog's and mini games. I think this is a keeper. Even tho it takes a long time to download (which is a bummer), I think once you get it installed it will be worth it.

Have just played several "rooms" of the game. Did have one problem though. Used the start up tutorial, and it was fine. However, it didn't tell me exactly how to do one part.... Possible spoiler, but it is near the very start, so.... You need to use a fishing rod to catch a fish. I don't know how many times I clicked, dragged, clicked; clicked, dragged, moved, clicked; started the clicking and dragging again; clicked the hint button which only highlighted the fishing pole; left the spot and came back; tried just about anything and everything except----finally through trial and error, discovered I needed to click, move, and double click. Would have been nice to be told that part....

80-120 KB/s in 2016? Insane :D Go to http://files.myplaycity.com/files_downloader_temp/panopticon_setup.exe
- 3-5 MB/s or faster :)

Started this download and it was a slow 95 KBs. After about 1.5 hours went for a bike ride. Got back 1.5 hours later and IE11 DL mgr had "Resume" highlighted. Clicked resume and IE11 crashed and reloaded with entire DL gone. Started again. 42.2 KBs!!!! Is it 1998? Feels dialup days are here again. Right now it is stuck at 92% and nothing is happening.

It would have been much faster to place a link on P2P.

Waited for several hours for it to download only to have trouble installing. Kept saying the file was empty and invalid.
Went to My Play City, downloaded faster but then it wouldn't complete the set up, supposedly because of a firewall setting?????
But, this is a nice supprise to have a game that could just be downloaded and not have to get keys.

I tried to download the game a third time (after a came come) and a again it would have taken 8 hours. After reading all the comments I tried the tip downloading using the Free Download manager. The download took about 45 minutes after installing the Download Manager and the game installed fine. So far playing the game seems ok. Never before I used a Download Manager (I was always a bit weary of them) for any download, but this time it worked out fine.

Thanks and Happy Hogging ;-)

I will give my impressions of the game first... then I'll address the nightmare of a download process.

The game itself loaded fine on my Windows 10 64 computer. The graphics are very well done, and the story line is intriguing. I always opt for the tutorial in case there's something unique to a game. In this case, I only played to the first hidden object screen. I've enjoyed the little bit I've played so far. I find the music pleasant and non-intrusive. I think I'm really going to enjoy this game.

Now the download process. I use Opera as my browser, my computer is a quad-core and reasonably quick. I have a 6MPS DSL line and it has always been reasonably fast for me. I started the download around 10AM. The best download speed I could get was around 34kps - briefly - and then slower. It originally told me 19 hours and then settled to 10-11 hours - ugh. I decided to do other things and let it go. I got the free Steam key to Crystals of Time that WhiteRabbit mentioned, went out to lunch, came home...... Then it was 4:45PM. 71% done - 3 hours to go. I found reference to Free Download Manager and decided to give it a try, figuring things couldn't be any worse than they already were. I downloaded and installed it and paused the marathon download at 71%. Started Free Download and was getting speeds of 300-350+kbs. Long story short, what hadn't finished in 7 hours plus was download in 45 minutes. There is something seriously wrong somewhere.......

Because of Free Download Manager, I will continue to try to get games here. This one very nearly drove me over the edge!!!! Thanks for what looks to be a challenging HOG game......

It was nice to see a change from the usual "contest" that has been here every week lately. Especially this type of game, which I really enjoy. Unfortunately, I had the same problem as everyone else. The download showed over three hours to go, which is ridiculous on this computer. But I went about my business and came back later. I'm not sure when the download stopped, but it did. A total waste of time.

As others have suggested, I went to MyPlayCity because the game did seem interesting, and it downloaded and set up in about three minutes. Having to uncheck a box every time I open the game is far less aggravating than dealing with whatever GOTD has become.

Some have also suggested installing a download manager. That's fine if you actually need one, but I'm not about to download extra programs to deal with a problem that is obviously this site's and not my computer's. You can blame the problems on negative feedback, or whiners, or whatever you want. But GOTD has gone steadily downhill since they overhauled the site. I'm sure they have their reasons, and I have my reasons for going elsewhere to try out software.

At any rate, I've found that this is actually very good game, if you like this genre. But I strongly suggest getting it from MyPlayCity. (Just remember to uncheck the boxes.)

Why does it take so long for these to down load this is 2016 and I have 200meg broadband also this is not the only time, lately its been every week. !! the down load times are varying from 24 hours to 14 hours then 9, back up to 12 then down to 4 and out of the 900 + mb it has only downloaded 28mb in 1.5 hours. If it's your way of losing followers I have to tell you this is gonna do it.

I have been on this for the last 9 hours and only got just over 50% and it still says 11 hours left.
