Hi Little Ricky, I've put you on orr white-list. See if that makes any difference. Regards Whiterabbit.

p.s. I deleted two of your comments when I saw all three were exactly the same, not realizing you'd posted them on different game pages. sorry.

During the first run attempt it showed an error message, something like "The code execution could not proceed because file d3dx9_43.dll is missing. Reinstalling may fix the problem". Found such file in the directory of the other game offered today, copied into this folder, still won't run. Deleted the whole folder, reinstalled, the game did run once using the "Launch Outer Space" option checked by default at the end of installation, even though the above mentioned dll was nowhere to be found in the installation folder. The game did not react to mouse, just to keyboard. Exited to run again the .exe file (as admin, otherwise got a black screen and had to use the Task Manager to kill it) and got the same error message as initially. Deleted everything without regrets since the game didn't seem too interesting from the screenshots anyway.

Hi JoeJ, that particular message usually means you need to install another copy of dirext X. Check the wikitech page HERE

or you can get 32 and 64 bit versions of d3dx9_43.dll HERE:

I've downloaded dll files from the above site previously and have never had any issues. Try placing the ddl file in the system 32 folder. Because the folder contains files that shouldn't be deleted is a hidden folder. you will need to open up the control panel and open the File Explorer folder (found easily by using the large icons view. This opens a small window. click on the view tab then scroll down until you find Hidden files and folders and check the show hiddenfiles, folders and drives. This will then enable you to see all hidden folders, that appear slightly translucent compared to a normal folder.

Whiterabbit-uk,
Thank you for the reply (and for everything you've been doing at this site for so many years). As someone with a computer science degree I have an idea how to show hidden folders - that's the first thing I do after any system reinstallation. It is necessary to transfer emails, bookmarks and other useful settings from the previous installation, as I'm sure you know very well. My systems are usually rather up to date, as is the one I tried it on - it's recent and clean. Anyway, I downloaded both versions from the website you linked to and they have the same name, so it's impossible to place them both in the same folder. Placing the 64-bit version changed the error message to "Application was unable to start correctly. Click OK to exit (error 0xc000007b)" or something similar. Placing the 32-bit version resulted in the application opening a Windows Explorer "Open file" window. When I selected the 32-bit version of the dll file, Windows Defender showed a message that the file flying.exe (that's how it shows up in the Task Manager too) was trying to connect to the internet. When I unchecked the permission box, the program never started. It may very well be that some programs from the XP era will not run on 10, or it may be something else .... :-) I've never been a fan of the "lunar lander" genre anyway, so I don't care.

Thanks again and keep up the great work. I find it ever harder to post any comments on this site, thanks to the captcha dragging me through the mud everytime. I don't know if a picture with traffic lights is one that contains just the lights or the pole they are mounted on as well. I tried both options and it didn't seem to matter. I always have to go through 6-10 captchas before I'm allowed to post my comment. Of course it doesn't stop hackers, as evidenced by the recent massive downvoting (between dozens and hundreds) of every comment on the main site.

Hi JoeJ, Just a quickie to let you know, I hope you didn't think i was being condescending w.r.t. explaining how to find hidden folders. I've found over the years I've moderated that it's best to assume community members are not computer literate. It just saves time having to post several times when a community member re-posts asking how to do what I've suggested.

JoeJ,

If it helps...
While DX9 is included in the latest DX that comes with win10, and *in theory* should work with everything, some have found that they still need to install DX9. There are also potential issues when it comes to GPU support -- the graphics hardware &/or drivers may only include a subset of DX capabilities, & those may be focused more on what a user might require with more current games etc.

Googling on "windows 10 dx9" [w/out quotes] gets several hit that might provide some help &/or insight. Also, while I don't *think* it would likely effect this issue, I've never fired up one of the GOTD games in win10 without 1st running the Compatibility Troubleshooter -- it's made quite a difference, and never have come across a game that wouldn't play in win10 on both a desktop PC & a more limited 2-in-1.

Outer Space
In Brief
A lunar lander style game where you rescue stranded spacemen

outer-space-002
Installation Issues:
Outer Space downloads to a 12.3 MB zip file that unzips to two files, (a setup executable and a read me document). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed if you wish. The installed game is 11.2 MB in size.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Outer Space
Five shortcuts are installed to the desktop, four of which can be safely deleted . If you want the games shortcut to be installed to the desktop, make sure the appropriate checkbox is checked. Even if this is left unchecked you will still get the four internet shortcuts installed to the desktop; (i.e. Falco Space - Online Game!, FalconLine Online Games Website, FalcoGo WebGL Games! and Free Games Downloads!). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure the appropriate checkbox is unchecked when the 'additional task's window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window).

Introduction:
Outer space is an old school, pixel art game about rescuing the crew of crashed and destroyed space ships. The game is vaguely similar to that old classic Lunar Lander, where fuel is at a premium. To rescue crew successfully in the 30 levels of increasing difficulty you must dodge asteroids and maneuver between buildings.
The Game:
Outer Space is basically a lunar lander game without the moon. You have to rescue stranded spacemen avoiding any obstacles including the boundary walls. Touching anything apart from the landing site or the astronauts you are rescuing will result in your ship being destroyed. Also, you must land your rocket on the landing strip correctly otherwise your ship will explode and then you'll have to restart from the beginning of that level. Thankfully, there are unlimited lives, The main problem you face, once you've acclimatized yourself to the ship controls is the amount of fuel you have. Take too long in rescuing and returning to a landing site, and you'll end up running out of fuel which will inevitably lead to a nose dive into an obstacle and exploding. As you progress through the levels, they become increasingly more complex and convoluted, making control of your ship a skill you must develop quickly otherwise you wont stand a chance of surviving all 30 levels. That's all there is to it. You can find a free browser version of a basic moon lander HERE

Conclusion:
Open Space is an okay lunar lander type arcade game. If you like this type of game, its definitely worth downloading. There's 30 levels to beat, which should take you a few hours at most to complete.
Other Reviews and Videos of Outer Space:
You can see other comments of Outer Space HERE. Steam community members were mainly positive about this game. Most negative comments were about the broken achievements, which are not applicable to this free standing version.

Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Outer Space to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try white-listing the setup.gcd file. In the almost 12 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.
