To those that are having problems getting this game to work, please make sure your drivers are up to date. Read the comments especially Joes and my replies to Grandmaslove. Joe had problems, but managed to resolve it, and i found a post in the Steam forums related to a dll file that may be causing the problem especially those with ATI graphic cards. This game works on my Win 10 and Win 7 computers, both of which have NVidia cards (I wo't use ATI anymore after having problems with ATI/ASUS cards over the last 10 years (3 different ones)..

I must reiterate what I've said before with respect to commenting about the game giveaway and not about other things, It has been increasingly difficult to obtain games from developers which is why the giveaway team have had to try different methods to obtain free games. I know many of you don't like this, but it's beyond my control; I'm just a volunteer on this site and have no say in such matters. There will still be the 'old style' games given away as and when the team can secure them from developers.

I am still deciding what to do about non related comments, the Yes's were definitely in the majority, but i do think taking away all comments that do not talk about the game would be a great shame, especially the friendly banter that has been an hallmark of this site since it's inception back in Dec 2006. I'm thinking so long as constructive comments about the game are made, be they negative or positive, or some suggestions made to improve the game, other non related comments will not be seen as negative. I wish to keep the friendly and family oriented atmosphere that we have here, so comments won't be removed unless they contain the following..... swearing (including abbreviated forms of swearing), or other innappropriate comments especially anything to do with religion, politics and of course bullying. Negative comments about other community members posts will not be acceptable as they are regarded as bullying. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about a game so long as it doesn't denigrate other members of the community.

What we need to do is to stop the whinging and complaining and start to give decent feedback about the games, be it negative or positive, instead of saying things like I don't like this new game giveaway, I don't like Facebook, I don't like Steam, I'm leaving, goodbye, I'm out of here, rubbish and other such comments that decry this site. If you like the game, please say why rather than giving one word comments such as good, excellent, nice etc.

Can't you see that such comments are not going to attract more developers to the GameGiveaway project but are more likely to push them away. I used to post a request (which is now posted in the forums to reduce the size of this post) that asked the community to post their opinions of the game they were playing and if possible suggest improvements. Of the tens of thousands of community members who download from this site, less than 0.01% of community members ever bothered to post a comment (that's one for every thousand downloads) and of those only about 5% posted comments about the actual game (that's one in every twenty thousand) and of those only about 10% post feedback that could be useful to developers. (that equates to one useful comment for every 200 000 downloads, which in my opinion is absolutely abysmal)

If we want more decent games we have to see your (the communities) opinions of the games we get. It doesn't have to be a ten page novel, just a paragraph detailing what you like or dislike about the game and what you would have liked to have seen, be it a more colorful game, less violence, easier to see hidden objects, better tutorials, a level editor etc etc.; you could even post bullet points or a numbered list of what you would like to see, or what you thought was not so good.

Regards, from your long time moderator (and friend to some), Stephen aka Whiterabbit-uk

Overall I'd give this game a 9 out of 10 for gameplay, simplicity of design and enjoyment.

Suggestions:
For those who find this game not to their liking, instead of posting a few words saying you think this is a waste of time, or other words to that effect, would you instead give some feedback detailing why you don't like the game and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, explain why. There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can get the game from Steam HERE for £3.99/$4.99/C$5.49/E$4.99. There is a demo available as well which you can get from the same link.

If you have problems installing the game, just post a comment here, thank you.

The Game:

odd even level 1
random 01
OddEven is a math and logic based, interger placement puzzle created by the developer Irritating fly Studio. (An integer is a whole number, not a fractional number, that can be positive, negative, or zero). Diamond shapes contain digits from [num: x to y] and Octagons contain the sum of the four diamonds that surround it. Each puzzle will have some diamonds and some Ocatagons filled with integers. To add integers to the blank diamonds and octagons click on the one you want to add a number to, then use the mouse wheel up or down (or the keyboard up and down arrow keys) to add the number you want to add. The sum of the integers surrounding each octagon are equal to the integer found in the octagon. I've included images of a couple of examples of puzzles, in the unsolved and solved form above just below the introduction. From those examples you should hopefully see the idea behind this maths game .

You can print out puzzles which can be used for some light relief from Key Stage 2 maths lessons i.e. Key Stage 2 is 8 to 10 year olds) through to key Stage 4 i.e. 15 to 18 year olds (or other countries equivalents) and for mental excercises for those that have left school. The game enables you to create simple puzzles through to quite large and complex puzzles using the editor that comes as part of the puzzle *see the left pane next t the puzzle. This can be hidden by clicking on the cogs in the top left hand potion of the puzzle board.

campaign
You can access help by clicking on the question mark that's located at the top of the information bar to the left of the puzzle board. You'll find information on key bindings, how to generate a user puzzle as well as other useful information, though personally I thought it lacked a simple tutorial. The quickest way to create a puzzle is to click on the random button, which will generate various grid sizes on each click of the button; there's also a slider that allows you to create easy or hard puzzles. The harder the puzzle, the fewer the diamonds and octagons are filled with integers. The largest grid you can create is a 12 by 12 diamond grid which will give you 121 octagons.

You can also create custom puzzles manually by using the size and num inputs that are found at the top of the left panel. The largest integer you can input in the first field is 99 and 123 in the second num field. Not all combinations of numbers will let you create a puzzle. You can check to see if the numbers you have inputted will work by clicking on format, then look in the window under the clear, check and solve buttons to see if the puzzle can be created. The harder you've set the slider the fewer integers will be entered into the diamonds and octagons. The range you select via the num fields will determine how large the integers will be in the diamonds. The controls may seem a little confusing at first, but are actually quite straighforward; you just need to jump in and mess around with the various buttons to get a feel for the game. If you are stuck, you can click the solve button if you wish then move on to a new puzzle.

Other Reviews:

Conclusion:
For anyone into puzzles, this is a great find. Also, it's usually only available on Steam, but we are getting a DRM free version thanks to irritating Fly studios. It may look complex, but in reality it's a a simple puzzle game, with a lot of replayability. You can create as many custom made puzzles as you wish from a grid of 2 x 2 diamonds (with one octagon) to a grid of 12 x 12 diamonds with 121 octagons, not only that, you can change the integer values that go into the diamonds from 2 to 123, giving this game an almost unlimited number of puzzle combinations. My math abilities are rusty after not really thinking about the subject for over 30 years (I used to teach maths to key stage 3), but we are talking thousands of combinations.

I highly recommend this no fuss game and give it a 9 out of 10 for game play.

Scoring:
Game play: 9
Graphics: 8.5
Audio: 0
Re-playability: 7
Originality: 7
Fun Factor: 7.5
Chill Factor: 6
Power-ups: 0
Mini Games: 0
Game as art: 8
Tutorial/Help section: 5
Level Editor: 7

I've added more categories to the score board, but I won't be giving an overall average score based on all the categories listed above because each holds a different weight when comparing each category . Overall, I'd give OddEven an excellent 9 out of 10 based on game play, simplicity of design and enjoyment of the pure game.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the developer irritatingFLY studio for giving OddEven for free today and to the game giveaway team for finding yet more original games.

Useful Information:
The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals, formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin has changed to the excellent FPS game Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. It's a little dated compared to the latest FPS games, but is still a great game with excellent graphics. It was released around 2005 so should easily play on most computers of today.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing todays game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

I was able to install and run the game on my Win 8.1 PC with no problems. It installed, but immediately crashes when run on my wife's Win 7 PC. I compared the files in the game's folder and they are identical on both PCs. The only difference I saw during the install was the C++ library. It didn't need to install it on the 8.1 PC, but it did install it on the 7 PC. Even though the Win 7 PC is older, it has Intel 3100 graphics, which is above the listed requirements, so I don't think that's the problem.

As for the game itself, once I figured out that you need to click on the Campaign button (in the middle of all the other stuff for generating your own puzzles) to get to the actual game, it was interesting to play. It definitely falls in the same game category as Sudoku, so if you like that you will likely like this.

My suggestions for improvements:
- Start with a menu where you choose Campaign or Create. Having all of it in one screen is extremely confusing and it is not obvious what to do next once the game loads. Figuring out how to start the game shouldn't be the first puzzle you have to solve.
- Improve the Help screen. Most of the info on the Help screen is useful, but it seems to leave out a lot. Like what does 'sum % 2 = 0' mean. Its on the same line that tells you if the sums are odd or even, but it doesn't seem to mean anything useful. It would help to explain how the hints work. What are things like 'n(1,2) ' referencing? Obviously, to parts of the puzzle grid, but without an explanation the hint is useless.
- Fix the Timer. It shouldn't start timing while you are reading the Help screen at startup. It should stop timing when you solve the puzzle (click 'Check' and get the green check mark). Right now it continues to count time until you move on to the next puzzle.
- Speaking of which... Make it more obvious how to move on to the next puzzle (or at least explain it on the Help screen). Once I figured out how it worked, it wasn't a problem, but it was just another unneeded frustration in playing this game.
- Test it on more systems. There seems to be a lot of other people having problems with the game crashing

Conclusion: The game play is fun and a good way to keep you thinking. The user interface seems unfinished and needlessly confusing.

I was able to install the program on my Windows 10 laptop but only after temporarily disabling Avira anti-virus, which had been blocking the program when it tried to connect to GiveAwayOfTheDay servers.

My suggestions would be three. First, as has been suggested by others, better instructions or tutorials would be helpful. Maybe even a first-time-use splash screen with the instructions. The question mark icon wasn't the easiest thing to find and not necessarily intuitive in guiding people to look there.

Second, I'd like to be able to check whether a puzzle board I've created is solvable without a solution being filled in. A separate button to check for solvability with a yes/no response would be helpful.

And third, I'd like the middle spaces with the sums to add automatically and dynamically as I input numbers around them. Perhaps keep the running sum in red or another contrasting color until I get all four perimeter spaces filled in and a different color if the sum is wrong - odd when it should be even or even when it should be odd.

I appreciate the puzzle game. Thanks to irritatingFly Studio for offering it and to GOTD for hosting it.

I downloaded an installed the game. I didn't like how it just started to instal a Microsoft programing thing. The game didn't run due to a missing dll file. It isn't worth it to me to track down how to fix this and make it work for me.

My suggestion is more transparency in the set up about what will be installed, the game, extra things so the game can run, etc. Also make sure it works with the minimum necessary on the part of the gamer. If it expects to find some things on the machine already that are not on all machines, then include a copy in the game folder. And look for it there or include instructions on where to put it.

I like logic games but looking at the screen shots, I am not sure I am interested in trying to figure out how to play. I was planning on poking around with it and see if the logic just made sense to me.

This is a great simple puzzle game. I have an IQ of 145, and I found it very enjoyable.
Two suggestions:
1. Instructions need to be easier to follow. (The tutorial was a little bit helpful, but I felt like I had to figure things out on my own.)
2. Make an Android app for this! I probably would not sit at my computer and play this, but I will pull out my phone for a quick brain teaser when I am sitting on the throne or waiting in the doctor's office.

I agree with Michael Summerset. The game needs to start in campaign mode and then go to the create puzzles board.
I downloaded and installed this morning. Couldn't make heads or tails out of it (this was before Stephen's review) and just closed and figured would try later.

I'm so glad I just didn't give up. The game is very enjoyable once you find the actual puzzles!

I don't want to start off making puzzles when all I wanted to do was learn how the game works. There really needs to be a tutorial or at least start off in campaign mode in order to learn the game. THEN can go and create your own puzzles (which I do love that you can do since It means that this game can be used even when finished with the premade ones :) ) Campaign means nothing to someone who doesn't know that means where the puzzles are at.

So final verdict: the game is very enjoyable and I can see myself coming back to it a lot. (I really enjoy math and puzzles) but the interface needs to state at opening (especially for the first time) how to get to the actual puzzles.

Well...
I just toasted my computer. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT install this game on Windows XP.
Was in a hurry to get to work and didn't even glance at the system requirements ( windows 7 and newer) and installed the game.
The game first made a change to my registry (which i thought was odd) then installed Microsoft C++ Visual.. The game installed then stated it was not a 32 bit application and that was that.
Now the computer is unbootable and any attempts to boot only gives an error message which reads: "the application failed to initialize properly ( 0x0000005) click on OK to terminate the program"
Cannot get to system tools to do a system restore and safe mode will not work. ugh - this is the compy i do all my main computing with. Cannot even get to task manager...just a messed up computer. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THIS ON XP (w/sp3) Had to borrow another computer to get back on line to post this bad experience. Wouldn't you think this game would warn you that it is not compatible with XP before it tries to install like a lot of software does ? Still...it is my fault for not reading the system requirements.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Jeff

........................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Jeff, sorry to read of your horror story. Have you tried booting up with the windows installation disk? You will first need to go into the boot up sequence, uisually by clicking on Del during boot up. One inside bootup, change the boot sequence so that it checks your DVD/BluRay drive. That will force your computer to initiate the windows installation disk. From there you should get an option to repair windows that shouldn't affect anything you have installed.

There are many fix it posts online. If you still have access to another computer, Google the problem to get other fixes. I hope you get this problem fixed.

Reply   |   Comment by jeff  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Wow, jeff, what a bummer! I hope you can get it fixed without a lot of hassle!

I have had problems with Steam games I have purchased mainly because games I am used to getting work on most Windows systems even though they are not listed as compatible but on Steam, if it says it doesn't work on XP, it doesn't. I used to not pay any attention to systems requirements but Steam has taught me how foolish that can be.

Good luck on getting your PC up and running!

Wow, this looks hard - that's not necessarily a bad thing ;-) I'm a comp-sci/math guy who only has limited interest in number-puzzles so I don't know how much I'd play this game. But since that traditionally doesn't deter me from getting games , I will be definitely be grabbing this. Will probably enjoy a few runs at easy - plus I love software that lets me generate puzzles, levels, images, etc LOL. Definitely want to support this so as to encourage more.

I hope you enjoy it, thank you for a positive comment. :)

btw, just thought I'd mention that it's too bad we can't also get a Steam key - easier for me to keep track of my hundreds of games that way; not to mention getting updates. I DO understand the reasons we don't tho.

........................Moderator Comment........................

I think there has been Steam keys available for this game via at least one Indie Bundle. Ah yes, just checked. It was available via the Groupees, Build a Greenlight Bundle 37, which was available early January this year (before it was released on Steam, I had a spare Steam key, which I've already given away).

Another thought for the developer - this seems like it'd work well on handheld devices. Consider converting it for Android and IOS - supposedly there are programs that make moving between platforms much easier these days.

I'm done trying. I uninstalled and reinstalled to 64-bit to see if that would make a difference but it didn't. My guess (and probably wrong) is the OpenGL 6.14 is not backward compatible to whatever OddEven needs from OpenGL 3.1.

So I uninstalled both MS Visual C++ versions (x64 & x86) and then the game. Not sure which version was for GGOTD and which for Steam but I'm hoping I don't need either on my system.

Thank you for your suggestions TM. I didn't think to consider Open GL could be the problem. Will add that to my review, just in case .

game looks interesting, once I figured out that there are restrictions on the sums as well (the octagons) as well as on the initial values (the diamonds).

And odd/even refers to restrictions on the sums, too.

At least I think so. I was only able to play it a few times because my cursor disappears when the game starts - like most games - however, there is no options screen on which to change the cursor.

For players - play the campaign before blasting off into random puzzles

For the creators - require completion of the campaign (i.e., tutorial) before allowing random puzzles to be created.

Thanks for an interesting game.

I checked out OddEven on Steam. There is a demo so I installed it and got the same washed out screen with no access so I checked the Steam Community Discussions and found this:

===========
"Odd||Even System Requirements
MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 7/8/10
Processor: 1GHz or Faster
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics 3000/2000 (OpenGL 3.1 or above supported card)
Storage: 50 MB available space

Your Intel HD graphics doesn’t support openGL 3.1 .
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005524.html
Also there are some rare issue with particular windows 7 and Amd R9 Graphics card series."
=============

Since I have AMD, I checked but mine is Radeon HD 6670, not R9 series and my OpenGL is 6.14. So, since the graphics specs are so specific, it sounds like unless we have ATI cards, the game won't work for us. Is that correct?

........................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your feedback TM, I should have posted the Steam comments instead of directing the community to the comment. Probably would have been a better idea. The game isn't specific to ATI only cards though a sI never use ATI (after three ATI cards have developed problems over the last 10 years, two of which were very expensive). I use Nvidia usually, though i have used 3DFx and Intel cards in the past.

Same issue as others, stops responding upon launch. Tried various compatibility settings, same error. O/S and video drivers are all up to date with the latest for my system.

...Searched the thread for Joes comments referenced in the Mod Comments, they are currently nowhere to be found..... Do see the Grandmaslove but no solution is visible.

Per various solutions to atioglxx.dll crashing listed on Steam:

Tried downloading the 13.1 AMD drivers and extracting the atioglxx.dll file and putting in the folder with the game .exe -- same error.

Tried with the latest beta 16.2.1, game now runs, but have the same issue others report with just the yellow/gold screen on the right and non-responsive cursors.

Tried the latest released version, 15.7.1, same thing - runs but yellow/gold right panel and non-responsive cursor.

At this point, I'm done trying to troubleshoot the devs lack of QA and uninstalling. (If your game requires the latest and greatest of everything or certain minimum specs/drivers --- build a spec/version check into your install routine -- if the system doesn't meet those requirements, warn the user before installing.)

Also, the install for this game is clunky and not professional --- C++ install should be part of the game install and invisible to the user, not a separate install after the game.

........................Moderator Comment........................

Here's what Joe said:
OK, I just figured it out. At first I thought it might be my AdGuard program killing the game, but it turns out that it's the new version of AVG antivirus that is keeping the game from installing! I had to temporarily disable AVG and it extracted, installed, and activated the game, so all is well now.
The problem seems to be the same as Grandmaslove i.e. atioglxx.dll, this is related to ATI graphic cards. I did post a link to a post regarding this issue in answer to one of Grandmaslove's comments.

Sounds like we both have the same OpenGL 6.14 problem and I'm with you. Any game that is so visually "bland" yet requires such specific graphics configurations is not a game I want on my PC.

Thanks anyway, GGOTD!

Game doesn't run (gold-letter version, only way-out: task manager). Tried in vain to find Joe's helpful comment - maybe you deleted the wrong one??? -
But thank you for you work which up to now ;-) has always been very helpful and welcome

I've checked, its still there. Basically he said it was his AVG security software that was the problem. it was blocking the installation. Check the other replies i've made to comments. If you have an ATI graphic card, that could be the issue. Follow the link i've provided to the Steam forums where it is discussed.

The game feels incomplete. It looks more like a program for developing the puzzles rather than trying to solve them. It could definitely use an introductory menu that would take one into campaign mode then offer the option to create one's own puzzles.

And why all yellow for the board? Not the best color to stare at. The game needs more graphical development.

I agree, though it is still very playable once you figure out the controls Hopefully the developer will take note of the communities comments.

No cursor on screen. Ran compatibility, which solves this problem on other games, and still no cursor.

Have you tried changing the screen resolution temporarily, then changing the game to windowed mode, then change the resolution back to your preference.

Same problem as many others: only the left panel of the display appears with a blank pale gold right hand section; the timer is counting, the pointer moves, but nothing responds to the pointer; have to go to task manager to exit. Running Win 10 Home (64 bit). A small rectangular box appears in the lower right hand corner with multi-colours and several arrows, but again nothing responds to the pointer. I hope someone can come up with a solution, because this looks like a great game.

OK I seem to be having problems. When I start the game it fills the screen (of my left monitor on Win 10 x64). Perhaps I need to reboot after the automatic installation of the C++ runtimes. Unfortunately, I am in the middle of a backup that will probably take until the middle of the day on Sunday. Anyhow all I get is a control panel on the left and a blank area on the right. The proportions in Stephen's review look the same as mine. Unfortunately nothing I click on anywhere does anything at all. And I"m getting nothing from the system that the game will not run.

When I go to www.irritatingFLY.com I get a blank page so there's nothing that I can look for for help. This is true with Opera, Chrome, and whatever the default browser is in Win10.

Since I like mathematical puzzle games, I hope that I can eventually figure out how to make it do something.

Win7 64-Getting the same thing everyone else is getting. The game just will not run. It's really a shame since I love puzzle games and this looked like a really fun one. I am guessing THIS is the problem...Graphics: Intel® HD graphics 3000/2000 or above; (OpenGL 3.1 or above supported card).

It automatically installed MS C++ runtimes but all I get is a black screen with cursor. First time since 2006 I couldn't get a game to run. :( Luckily(because I saw all the problems running it) I used Time Freeze to install so all gone now with my reboot.

Hope you are feeling better, Wrascally Wabbit. Hugs to you and your family.

I have an ATI card. I tried the different dll still didn't work. I use Comodo as my anti virus.

Oh well.... one that didn't work out of thousands isn't bad. :)

Since required MS C++ runtimes it wouldn't have run in my Linux environment any ways. I have been busy transferring games. I have gotten over 90% of my games to run in Makulu Linux with Wine or Steam. Game developers are going to have to take Linux users serious about their games being able to be played in Linux since so many have taken the plunge to avoid MS and their antics.

I like the fact that GOTD found an new developer to showcase. Thanks!

........................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your feedback Delenn. I'd love to try Linux, but even if I could get 90% of my games to work, I'd still be losing over a thousand games to incompatibility, so it's a no brainer for me. :(

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. It makes an icon. I installed to internal D: no issues. Did take unusually long time to do the actual install from Setup.exe but finally began just as I was ready to kill it (ready all the neg comments about game won't run had me on edge). At end there was a fast install of C++ MS package. And maybe just me but MS's \system32\advpack.dll got a popup to be installed - message was from my antivirus watcher alert. No bigger, just the old MS advanced .INF package.
Game loads fast, plays smooth. Use the built in tutorial (and its check button) to get the idea.
Start easy. I'm still struggling. Just guessed to hit a right number on simple grid, then the fill in is pretty easy - lot like the mentioned similar games, Sudoku kind.
With a mouse scroll wheel the # selection is easy. Click in the outer diamond, scroll, click to set it and hit Check box for err. Go to next diamond. Once solve a few you'll get hang of it.
And yes the outer diamonds can be even & odd ones. Don't know why that got a post. Messes you up if that restriction enters your thinking.
Oh for those with issues running game, maybe try Compat mood set to Windows 95 or such.
Since I got the old advpack.dll message maybe that's got something to do with it. Don't know the
age of this program or its requirements but given the math of it who knows the needs. jmho
Thanks GOTD for comments AND the examples. Once in game it'll become clear. Save feature will certainly get a workout as levels increase in Campaign mode. 9.x/10 for fans.

Hi Grandmaslove, there must be a conflict with your computer set up. Try running the game again, then immediately check the event logs to see if any error messages have been recorded. This is a new game and may need the latest drivers for your graphic card.

I did check the Steam firums. Seems like others have had similar problems with the atioglxx.dll file. Possibly something to do with ATI graphic cards

Grandmaslove,

Could not find Joe's comments? the only one I see is where he said he disabled his AVG but still could not get it to work?

The steam comments say to add the .dll file to the "rage" folder. I don't have a folder with that name.....I'm batting 1000 lol

........................Moderator Comment........................

I'm assuming your graphic card is an ATI card as the dll file you mention is related to the drivers for an ATI card. The rage folder is also related to the graphic card. check which card you have via dxdiag and then go to the ATI web site and see if you need to download any other drivers. Though the dll file may just need replacing. you can get the dll file from HERE

I've downloaded dll files from that site several times and have never had any problems with them. Download the one at the end i.e. the manual one.

This looks like it could be a great math-puzzler game, but the entire user interface is geared towards computer programmers and digital graphic artists who are used to a panel full of menu options, not a typical end-user player. Nothing in the menu of options is all that intuitive to your everyday player.

Right from the start I was strangely annoyed by the lack of any typical game start-up menu. As I don't typically encounter the lack of such a menu, I say "strangely annoyed" because I never knew such a thing WOULD annoy me, but it very much does. Even a basic screen with a couple of clickable buttons like "Start Game", "Options", and "Tutorial" would make a significant difference.

I naturally understand the point of this game simply from the other comments presented here, but if I were to give this game to my nephews, they'd be bored with the main screen without any basic instructions. I doubt they'd spend more than a minute staring at it before closing it down and going to play something else. Math-strategy games face hard enough challenges enticing players to try them out and stick with them.

I'm not fond of the underlying grid that follows the cursor around. The flashing cursor is difficult to see at times and the gray 'X' when I click means what exactly? It comes off as saying, "You can't click here," when that is not the case, since clicking in any space moves the cursor to that space. Then, once a number is entered, the 'X' changes to a gray version of the number, which creates an annoying shadow effect. Click and drag, and that shadow X or number can be copy/pasted into another cell, overwriting it current contents. On one hand, I could see that being useful, but it just seems a little out of place for me.

Before I ever bothered with clicking on the ?, I figured random things out by chance, as I believe messing about with a program prior to being given instructions is the best way of testing such a program. I could type up to 9 digits into a field, which overflowed the space. When I did overflow the space, I couldn't click to get my cursor into the beginning or ending of the number via clicking. If it was outside the playable space, the cursor never showed up, and if it overflowed into another space, clicking next to the number entered caused the cursor to go into the adjacent space instead of where I wanted it within the entered number.

WASD cursor movement is programmed in, but strangely. A and D move along the rows as expected, but when switching rows it doesn't make sense. On the startup screen with three rows, the order went top row, bottom row, middle row.

The mouse scroll wheel can be used to change a field's numbering, both positive and negative.

The windowed and full-screen toggle button appears to actually restart the game, which creates a delay and removes the game from the taskbar briefly. That could do with smoother movement and timing.

The Info Window, as I'll call it, also seems out of place. It feels like something the programmer used while creating the game to debug it, but then left it there upon release of the game.

I could keep going, but I want to do something else now. Again, I like the idea for the puzzler, but the entire user experience seems ruined for me.

Thank you for your excellent feedback. I was initially confused by the left hand panel, but soon got used to the controls. Once you've figured out what everything does, it does become much clearer. I wrote my review early this morning, so perhaps I wasn't too good at explaining everything. Didn't want to spend too much time reviewing today as I have other things that needed addressing at home.

I was looking forward to the game since I like Kakuro but the screen was white with yellow letters and no buttons worked. Had to use Task Manager to close program. I am wondering if a graphics card limitation is causing the issue since it requires "Graphics: Intel® HD graphics 3000/2000 or above; (OpenGL 3.1 or above supported card)" even though I have an AMD ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card with the newest driver.

This may be the first game I have downloaded from GGOTD that is unplayable. I have a Win7 64-bit but installed game to 32-bit.

1. The game is only available in fullscreen (I prefer to play in windowed)
2. The game is almost unreadable with pale, washed out yellow controls on a bright white background (would be nice to be able to choose color scheme).
3. Does not seem to be any way for me to play the game... mouse (right or left buttons), arrows and/or keyboard do nothing. ("?" may explain but it won't open)
4. No way to exit the game except with "End Task" in Task Manager. ("X" may be the way to exit the game but since nothing works, I'm not sure.)

I was looking forward to trying OddEven but it is out of the question now for me.

.....................Moderator Comment......................................

You can play this game in windowed mode. If you look to the top right there are the usual window icons that allow you to reduce the full screen to windowed or send it to the task bar. You should be able to see them in the screen captures i've posted in my review.

ETA: I noticed that at least one other person tried compatibility but since the game supposedly only runs in Win7, 8 or 10, I didn't even bother with that because my compatibility is only for previous Windows versions (XP, Vista, etc).

Yes, but since the mouse & keyboard don't work, the "reduce" icon is useless.

The software installed on Win7 32bit but does not open. I IMMEDIATELY get an error message when double clicking on the OddEven desktop icon - "OddEven.exe has stopped working".

This is a "first" for me because i very, very rarely get an error message when installing software from GOTD.
I am at a loss, so if anyone can offer a way around this, I would be happy to hear to learn.
Cheers

I haven't been able to get this to work. The screen looks faded out, clock is ticking, pointer moves, but nothing else works. This is on a Win7 computer with the latest drivers installed. What I attempted but didn't work:

- checked the drivers and DirectX, everything is updated. Running DirectX 11.
- ran the installer again, which gives an option to "Repair" or "Remove" the program. I choose "Repair". Every time this runs it pops up a screen stating that it is installing MS Visual C++
- uninstalled and reinstalled
- visited MS and ran a separate C++ installer, just in case it was hanging up on that.
- tried compatibility mode for three earlier Win versions.
- tried running in windowed mode and limit the colors, etc.

I'm not sure what else to do at this point.

As far as the game, it looks like a good one for those who like puzzles like Sudoku. From what I can gather, you need to place numbers that add up to the central number (CN). For a single number it is easy, pick whatever you want. When adding another central number, say to the right, CN#1 shares it's two rightmost outer corners with CN#2, making the placement and selection of numbers a little more complicated. Adding a third CN to the right will result in CN#2 to have all four corners shared (two leftmost shared with CN#1 and two rightmost shared with CN#3).

Adding more rows and columns will increase the difficulty of finding the correct number combinations for each CN.

It looks like a nice brain-teaser. Wish I could get it to run properly.

Hi Melika, can you post an image of what you are seeing. I had no problems running this game on two of my computers, both of which have oldish graphic cards (NVidia GTX560 and a GTX780 cards( but both have the latest drivers. Check the comments. Joe had problems getting the game to work, but figured it out. (I've deleted the comments he made where he said the game didn't work.. also, try running the game again in a different resolution. If you can gain access to the top right corner of the game field you should b able to reduce the size to a window. That may allow you to see the full game.

WhiteRabbit, (you don't have to post this)

I just saw your message. I did try a different resolution earlier, but forgot to list it. I can't get it in windowed mode as nothing responds to the mouse, although I can move it around the screen. I also tried turning off my antivirus - another I forgot to list. I tried forcing it into windowed mode via that properties dialog box - no go. I'm next going to try the driver that was listed to see if that fixes it.

The really weird thing is that I can't get a screenshot of the game. What I get is everything that is running on the desktop when I started the game. I did take a photo which I have no idea how to attach. If you still want it, send me an e-mail or reply where I can post it and I'll get it to you.

That driver mentioned is for AMD graphics which I don't have, so it won't work for me.

........................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Melika, did you check your event logs immediately after trying the game? Maybe you can find an appropriate error message that will give a clue as to what is wrong. Quite a few community members seem to have this issue. I do hope someone finds a solution.

For me it's hard trying to figure out what could be wrong when I've had no problems getting the game to work on any of my computers. I hadn't actually installed the giveaway version until a few hours ago becasue i purchased this on Steam when it was released, but decided to install it anyway, but again, it worked first time. There must be some issue with resolution (I reckon), that is causing this problem for some, that or a driver issue. Maybe the developer can solve the issue. I was hoping to see some comments from the developer today, but so far nothing. :(

1. Install: What? After quick download, and an install that seemed to be going fine (Win 8.1), suddenly after the game installed it said it was installing Visual C++ with no warning, and then suddenly rebooted my computer with no warning, no asking, nothing. Seemed very suspicious (although unlike some here, I have NEVER had a malware warning about any game I've gotten here), but everything looks ok, and starting the game worked fine. I'm still quite nervous about this behavior, though. Not ok to install something like that with no warning, and then reboot my computer with no notice.

2. Gameplay: First try I just couldn't understand the game at all; it seemed like a no-brainer, until I read the Help file and saw you had to make all the octagons odd (or whatever you set in the format; I guess it was odd by default) and that you couldn't have numbers repeat (in diamonds or octagons or both or none, depending on how you set the format, which I hadn't). Once I got that, it was much more interesting, but the lack of a clear help file that took you step by step is probably a big barrier to many enjoying this game.

3. Site comment (if allowed): Yesterday, I mentioned that suddenly the comments are showing newest first, which is putting WR's review near the bottom, kinda annoying. Is this new behavior? I like having the oldest comments first (since that warns about install issue, although til today I rarely had any). Hope it's okay to include that comment since I did comment on the game first :).

.....................Moderator Comment......................................

Hi Meme, rest assured all games givenaway here are safe to download and install. i already have Visual C++ installed as i have quite a few games that require it to run. Though I am surprised it did it automatically. Usually you would get some sort of prompt asking for permission?. Thank you for your feedback.

Reply   |   Comment by neme  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Thanks for responding, WR; yes, I usually trust the games from here which is why I went ahead and ran it even after the install issues. However, I WAS very uncomfortable with it updating Visual C++ with no warning (I, too, like you, have it installed to play other games, and believed I had the latest, so was surprised it got "updated" with this one) and even more so by it suddenly rebooting my computer after the install with no warning or anything! And frankly, now that I'm seeing others having technical issues, even more unsure about keeping this, although so far those issues haven't plagued me. I did also notice that the shortcut it placed on my desktop had the "open file location" and other things grayed out in Properties, and I deleted it and created my own shortcut to the .exe. Don't mean to sound paranoid, but it seems like these developers think my computer is theirs :). Irritating Fly indeed {G and ducking}

Additionally, I got to play it a bit more, and find it kind of uninteresting and still a bit "dense", although usually math games intrigue me! Just not engaging for me.

Honestly, while I am grateful to the developers for the freebie, I'm just so uncomfortable with this taking over my computer to update an already updated Visual C++, forcefully reboot my computer, and install a kinda strange shortcut that I think I'm gonna pass on this one and vote thumbs down, a first for me here!

Half of this 43.1 MB download is background images. Why on Earth is a 13 MB 6,000 x 5,000 image needed? This game works well in some ways, but the interface needs improvement. It looks like something created by somebody who's halfway through Game Design for Dummies. Text is too small and doesn't contrast well with the background. There are so many other puzzle games available that I just can't be bothered with this one.

Well, what do I say ?
It's difficult to comment on a game that is a little out of the box, and I would hazard a guess designed by one highly skilled in maths for people highly skilled in maths.
That is not to say that it could be enjoyed by us mere mortals, but not without further in game tuition (a tutorial built into the game). Your notes and hints (1) & (2) is not of the common language used by lay people & therefor require further explanation. Your video on YouTube had no explanation why you were making the moves that you did, & therefore not helpful. I rather enjoy games such as Sudoku, but found this game a little confounding through lack of a tutorial.

Installed fine on Win 10 Home 64bit. I found it boring, not my type of game. Basically you have to make numbers to match the big number in the big section, but using only the numbers at the top, say 1 to 4 or you can change that to how ever you want. You do have random, check, hard or easy, etc. The whole point is to make it odd outside and evens inside (I think). Hope that is a good explanation. Someone else might like the game.

Thank you for your feedback Suzanne. Your point isn't correct as you can have both odd and even in the outside diamonds . This is a game that the community will either hate or love. If you like problem solving or puzzles this is a game you'd probably like. If you aren't into problem solving then this may appear boring. I love it. :)

this is the first game from giveawayoftheday that I have been unable to play.
It downloaded and installed onto my laptop (running windows10) but when I try to open it, I get the error message 'OddEven.exe has stopped working'
It's late at night here in NZ, I will try again in the morning when I'm not so tired

Hi Cathy, please check the FAQ's thread that I link to in my review. also check to see if your security is blocking the game. It is wrapped with a themida based wrapper that can sometimes be blocked by security suites :)

While I appreciate that you only want comments on the actual gameplay, the fact that so many are having trouble even opening the game should be of interest to the developers.
I shouldn't be the responsibility of the game player to follow complicated 'work around' solutions - the game developers should make the changes so that us 'ordinary folk' can easily download and play it.
If I had purchased this game, I would be asking for my money back

Hi Cathy, if the community was having problems installing a game, i'd also expect that to be posted as it is related to the game.

Download to W10 quickly, installed fine and opens quickly but ...
I have no idea how to play it.
Found the help button in the top left hand corner finally and its still no clearer what to do.
Looking forward to our sweet White Rabbits review ..... maybe you can shed some light on it.

..........................Moderator comment..........................

Finally posted my review. The help panel and the left hand panel that you see when you first open the game will appear confusing at first. I felt the same, but playing around with the various buttons, it soon became clear what the game was all about. starting with the simplest puzzle, a 2 by 2 grid of diamonds will result in just one ocatagon. Depending on whether you have set the slider to easy or hard (the slider is easy to find as it's very colorful compared to the rest of the puzzle), more or less numbers will be added to the diamonds and/or octagons. The harder the puzzle, the fewer clues you will get. The easyest you'll find are very easy to solve because all you'll need to do is count the number of integers in the diamonds, if all four are filled the central octagon is just the sum of all four intergers. If only tthree are filled, you'll find the octagon has already been added and all you then need to do is sum up the integers in the diamonds and subtract those from the integer in the octagon to give you the integer for the one that wasn't filled in. Of course that is the simplest form of the puzzle. As they become more complex it will become increasingly difficult to solve. The hardest puzzles could take days or even weeks to solve and are not for the faint hearted, or those who just want a quick fix. This is a game that chess players may enjoy, or those who can leave a game for days at a time. There is a save button at the bottom of the left hand panel, that enables you to keep part finished puzzles to complete later.

The name of the game, i.e. Odd/Even refers to the nuber you slect for the octagonsl if you select even (via the left hand panel), all of the octagens will be even numbers, selecting odd, they will all be odd, but the outer diamonds can be a combination of both. If you choose an even puzzle, then there cannot be 1 or 3 odd number sin the diamonds surrounding the ogtagon, conversly you cannot have two even mumbers or all even numbers in the diamonds in an odd puzzle :)

I found printing them out and then sitting comfortably in my recliner overlooking my back garden was a pleasant way to play this game. I found it oddly relaxing. I do hope my review and this comment will clear up your puzzlement? :)

Krystal, same to me - no problems with win8.1... It seems to be a puzzle-creator - a tool to create puzzles... ????

Krystal, It will generate random puzzles for play or generate puzzles according to your specifications. For play: the center (octogon) numbers will be either all odd or all even. The center (octogon) number is found by adding the numbers in the four (diamond) corners together. Generate a puzzle by clicking on random. Then use the slide to make the generated puzzle easy (1 or 2 unanswered spaces). Check your answers...no err means you got it right. This could get real complicated real fast. Thanks for an interesting game.

Moderator, way to hijack a contributors comment!

How so????

Reply   |   Comment by TK  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-6)

Moderator, Krystal and others make comments and you seem to feel editing their comments in order to post your reply whach may be using emboldend fonts and frequently longer than the original posters comment thus completely overshadowing their comment is to be desired, it messes up the voting, and also completely defeats the email notification original posters get when a REAL Reply is made via a comments respective Reply link! Case in point I had no notification you had responded/replied to or edited my comment because as far as the website is concerned you did not reply but censored my post which is what the website software provides the moderator with the edit other posters comments is for, not adding replies or commentaries! I only found out you had edited my post to "reply" because I checked back later to see how the giveaway is progressing.

........................Moderator Comment........................

That's a good point TK. I hadn't considered that aspect regarding you receiving notifications. Prior to the new look comments section there was no facility to reply to comments, I've just got into the habit of posting by editing the comment. you are the first person since i've been moderating the comments to have ever mentioned this. thank you. i will condier your suggestion and try to break my habit. Though I do think saying I censored your comment is a bit strong. censoring is what is says, removing part of a persons comment. The onl;y time I censor a comment is if it has inappropriate content such as swearing or bulling. Thank you for your feedback. It's got me thinking. :)

Hi All
Thanks for the replies. It sort of makes sense now but a basic tutorial would have helped.

By the way, in my original comment, i should have added that my computer is running W10 64 bit

........................Moderator Comment........................

I agree that a tutorial would be very helpful. I think this game is excellent, but i do think the lack of instructions, at least easy to understand instructions will put off potential buyers.

I'm looking forward to the preview because this is a really different game.. I mean really different to the usual offers.

Just spent the last hour replying to comments made about last weeks game as well as some other issues, so my review will be slightly delayed. I will post the review soon. Still got to add images and proof read. Shouldn't be more than half an hour.:)
