The Game:
This is the third in the Mystery Solitaire games we’ve received this year (Mystery Solitaire: Black Raven 13th Jan 18 & Mystery solitaire: Arkham Spirits 6th Jan 18 plus other solitaire games that look remarkably like the above, i.e. Solitaire Legend of the Pirates and Solitaire Victorian Picnic.

You can access different card styles and help via the options menu. There are two modes of play Newbie and Professional. The Professional mode is locked until you’ve played the first pack in Newbie mode. If you choose to play the Newbie mode all the way through, you can replay any level whereas you must restart the entire pack in Professional mode. The game is divided into 20 area’s each with names that reflect the Grimm Tales of Hansel & Gretel for example Unexpected Fork in the road, Forest Path, Gingerbread House and Witch’s Cauldron. Each area is divided up into 10 solitaire rounds. Once you’ve played the first area you unlock the professional mode. If you choose to move to the Pro mode once unlocked, all points already gained and any special cards such as Jokers and shuffles are also carried over to the pro mode.
Each level in a stage is worth 8 points, with a total of 80 possible points from each stage. To unlock each stage, you must score a certain amount of points before the next stage can be unlocked. For example, you require a total of 57 points to unlock the second stage. As with all solitaire games the game mechanic works on the principle of a chain. A card is taken from the pack and placed on the space next to the unexposed deck. Usually the first card is already turned over for you. You can choose either a value one higher or one lower than the exposed card. Any suit can be used. If you cannot continue the chain you have to turn over another card from the unexposed pack.

The more cards you have in a chain the greater the length of the multiplier bar. This does decrease with time, but so long as you continue a chain, the higher the amount of bonus coins you will be awarded at the end of the level. You also get more money for removing each card as the chain grows. The multiplier bar can be found in the upper righthand corner of the board. Some cards are gold coloured and are labelled special cards. If you remove one of these, you will receive additional points. If you remove all the gold cards from a level, the level ends, you score maximum points for that level i.e. 8 points and then you start the next level. If you fail to get the required amount of points by the end of level 10, if you are playing the newbie levels you can replay any of the previous levels to improve any of the levels that scored poorly. If you are playing the professional levels, you must restart the whole pack again.

The money you earn from playing the game can be spent in the game shop, where you can buy extra Mulligans (cost 2500 coins) which allow you to undo any last action including using your bonus’s, the Shuffle card (cost 8000 coins) which puts all the cards back in the deck and deals new cards or the Joker which can change any open card into a joker (cost 5000 coins). Jokers can be removed by any card. There are 21 trophies to earn and include such titles as Ancient Tome: pass all levels in Newbie mode, which also gives 10 000 coins, All-Seeing Eye: pass all levels in Pro mode which gives 20000 coins, Decrepit Scroll: Maximum points for 12 packs in Newbie mode earning 25000, ancient Rune: Using shuffle bonus 10 times earns you 5000 coins and Mysterious Mechanism: buying 10 Mulligans earns you 10000 coins. You can find descriptions of all the awards via the main menu. If you wish to end a level before you’ve finished, click on the pause button. That takes you to the pause menu where you can then access the main menu, replay the level, go to the levels map, the options or the main menu. Any progress made in a level if you leave it (unless you go back via the continue button) will be lost.

Videos of Mystery Solitaire: Grimm's Tales:
You can see a couple of gameplay videos of Mystery Solitaire: Grimm's Tales HERE & HERE.
Conclusion:
If you enjoyed the previous Mystery Solitaire games, you’ll like this one as well. The game play is the same, with the same bonuses, awards (though with different names to reflect the story they are following), the same scoring system and the same shop items and special cards. Apart from the graphics and title, nothing’s changed in this game. Personally, I get a little bored with these games after a short while. I’m surprised I go through to almost the end of the second stage then did some pro levels before I decided to come back to the review. For those who really enjoy Solitaire games I’d score this a good 8.5, from my point of view, because there is nothing new I’d only give it a 5 out of 10.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE; or If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it directly from Game Owl HERE

Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game and the scan found six hits from antimalware engines Jiangming, Kingsoft, MaxSecure, Panda, VBA32 & Zillya; this is probably a false positive due to the remnants of low level adware that was included with the non gamegiveaway version from MyPlayCity (MPC). This version has been stripped of the main adware; but, as mentioned above, non invasive remnants may still be present; this only opens your browser to MPC's home page once when you install the game and when you close the game down after booting it up. Also, a couple of shortcuts may be added to your desktop (these can be safely deleted once the game has installed). The installation does not inject any malware into your system. When your browser is opened to MPC's home page when the game has been installed, it earns MPC games some money, part of which is given to the developer of the game for allowing the game to be given away free. You can see the results of the scan via the following link:

Whiterabbit-uk,

Other Free Games:
The latest free games from Epic went live on Thurs 15th July and will be available to add to your EPIC games library until the 22nd July at 4pm UK time/11am EST when a new set of games will be available to add to your account. The latest games are Offworld Trading Company - Mars has been colonized, and Earth's corporate titans fight to dominate this new market. Competition is fierce in this fast-paced economic RTS from Civilization IV Lead Designer, Soren Johnson and Obduction - a sci-fi adventure from Cyan, the creators of Myst. Abducted far across the universe, you find yourself on a broken alien landscape with odd pieces of Earth. Explore, uncover, solve, and find a way to make it home.

From the 22nd July at 4pm UK time/11am EST the free games change over to Defense Grid: The Awakening , one of my all time favourite tower defense games. The game appeals to players of all skill levels. A horde of enemies is invading, and it's up to the player to stop them by strategically building defensive towers around their base. This was the very first game I ever purchased on Steam back in January 2009; together with a bowling game called Galactic Bowling and is well worth adding to your Epic library if you don't already have the game. Also available on the 22nd July is Verdun - a game with merciless trench warfare that immerses you and your squad (playing multiplayer) in intense battles of attack and defense. Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in an authentic World War One setting, offering a rarely seen battlefield experience. It also includes a single player element. Brilliant game that you must experience (if you enjoy FPS games).

Please see Delenn's threads for Steam and Non Steam freebies HERE and HERE respectively. Delenn has been updating these regularly for years now. It’s worth adding these links to your favourites and checking regularly for available freebies. Most are only free for a specific time. If you miss the deadline you’ll miss out. Once added to your account, it’s yours to keep. Delenn has recently posted details of more Steam games that are temporarily free. One may be until it leaves early access??? - i.e. Tower Ball - Incremental Tower Défense plus a reflex game called Keyboard Killers are still free. Delenn posted details of a free origin came called Battlefield 4 which is available for free if you have an Amazon Prime account (If you like FPS games, it's a brilliant game to own. (not sure if it's still live).

You'll find hundreds of freeware games of all arcade and indie genres on Itch.io and Caimans Games as well as other sources. Please do check out the game discussion forums for older posts HERE (the sticky section is useful). Many of the earlier posts may be out of date with respect to the links I and others have provided to the free games; however, you only need to know the name of the game to find most of them via other sources.

The Indie Gala developers freebies are available HERE (latest additions) and HERE (81 games in the Showcase, most full versions). Recent additions include 8Bit Boy, Lawless Lands Unrest, Block Dungeon, In Between Land Sonya: The Great Adventure, The Last Dream: Developer's Edition; plus, many more in the showcase section HERE and the Freebies section HERE.

It’s worth adding most of the links to your favourites and checking regularly for available freebies. Most are only free for a specific time. If you miss the deadline you’ll miss out. Several recent additions that were still available last week have since been removed e.g. Kick Ass Commandos, Whispering Willows, Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders, Inbetween Land and Deep Despair. Once added to your account, they are yours to keep and available to download DRM free anytime from your Indie Gala download page. :)

Whiterabbit-uk, this is a very good game for solitaire fans, even so is not quite solitaire...you can think of it as a simplified spider solitaire sadly is quite big for a card game but on the bright side each level can be considered a small game itself...

the story ain't much but have some good graphics thrown in there, but is ok, all know the old story, right?
plus music is fitting to play and for the choosen theme
but i keep thinking this should have been smaller in size

speaking of smaller, i see in the previous giveaway is mentioned there are other flavours of this game, so maybe there is a decent smaller one too
current giveaway is decent but medium to bigger
after all is only a card game

other interesting things given away here, card related and a lot smaller, would be mysterious symbols
i am glad i have it somewhere buried on my old hard disk, because it seems ro be gone from developer site or hidden upon search, maybe goatd can update a working link for the trial for those who are curious or perhaps give it away again as they do reruns

https://game.giveawayoftheday.com/mysterious-symbols/

returning to the game at hand it could be quite a lot smaller, if i remember right, the smallest solitaire released by ms could have been played even while installing windows and was few kb...good old times :) cuz lately no more versions of solitaire from ms,,,granted ms latest solitaire was getting bigger for no reason too

so anyway, is a good and decent solitaire themed game that is not solitaire and can be easy or hard depending how you understand to play it, of course your luck, choices, points and so on will affect your road too

huh,
Again, thank you for your feedback. As for Mysterious Symbols; I just checked my database and found I still have the game backed up on several DVD's and Blu Rays. . Many of the games installed back then were free standing and didn't have the Themida wrapper that is common these days. I backed up most games, so can usually find a lot of those original giveaways. That said, some such as the Playrix and Alawar games did require actual registration details if you copied them over to other computers. Thankfully most of the Alawar games I'd already purchased or beta tested for them, so had the reg' details. I do like to occasionally revisit some of those giveaways.

On a side note; any of the games I felt were really worth the effort I'd eventually purchase from the developers (to add my support) if it was still possible.

Stay safe Huh.

p.s.
I read over a lot of the comments from Mysterious Symbols which brought back memories of some of the abuse that was posted by some community members back then. I wasn't given access to the admin panel until Easter 2018 when the owners of the site granted me access so that I could edit my reviews as they often contained spelling errors and bad grammar. In exchange I volunteered to moderate the giveaway comments and the forums, and have been doing it virtually every day since. Sad Eh!

Linda Walker,

Hi Linda, By any chance do you use Bit Defender? If you do, it is one of the antimalware suites that may block this game. Check my security issues in the review above. If your security is blocking it there are three things you can try to get the game to install.

1) ...The easiest is to temporarily turn off your security until the game has been installed then turn it back on.

2) ... Whitelist the giveaway files with your security

3) ...Reboot your computer in safe mode with networking, install the game, then reboot as normal.

I hope this helps? If you continue to have installation issues, please check the FAQ's thread over in the ga me discussion section of the gamegiveaway forums (located in the Game discussion forum sticky section)

Whiterabbit-uk,
I did put giveawayoftheday.com in the allow list in Malwarebytes but it's now saying the giveaway is over. Can I not still get this one? I didn't get your reply till really late.

Linda Walker,

Hi Linda, sorry I don't always check comments until late in the day. Unfortunately each giveaway only runs for 24 hours. You can apparently get the game free from My Real Games.com, but I've never downloaded any games from them so cannot say if the downloads are safe.
