I'm actually quite tired of Monster Truck games... then again I did play them non stop for three weeks!!

John O, these have been the first few games after the spring/summer break!

Since quite a while they don't give away one game per day anymore, but one game on Saturday and one game on Sunday.

So the correct name for this website would probably be "Game Giveaways of the Weekend".

But then - just look at the dots in the address game.giveawayoftheday.com - Game Giveaway of the Day is only a subdomain of www.giveawayoftheday.com where actually EVERY day a piece of software is offered free for one day!

10 games in the space of 84 days is hardly a giveaway!!

That is less than 12%

How can this website dare to call itself

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com ??

It should be renamed to

http://we-might-do-a-game-today.com

To the game team, can we at least aim for 25 to 50% please??

Hi JS, one person reported a virus, which could easily have been picked up elsewhere. As it was it's probably a false positive. The giveaway team test all files offered using several antivirus checkers. I personally checked it using Kasperskys well respected AV program and it was clean.

Oh yeah….. the problem with the archive being password protected only occurred several times from well over a thousand downloads, and was easily solved. As for it being an easy way to pass virii and Trojans around, agreed, but any one with sense would check the archive first to make sure it was clean; (though as already stated the giveaway team do test the games rigorously).

Well i already a tons of race game but this is the hard one, i can't get pass 1st level, but the graphic is good. But why the developer made it sideway view, is it for 3D realistic???

Oh and by the way that's the easiest way to pass a virus or trojan, to force install from the zip itself. Yikes!

What a fest this weekend has been with these games. Yesterdays game contained a virus capable of causing a buffer overrun and crashing your computer and todays requires a password that we do not know because no one told us!

And no it does not work if you just click skip. And then I have just read how this one today is trying to install dll's in other apps.

Hacker paradise, that's what it sounds like to me.

Nice one Elizabeth, glad you got it sorted.

To Watcher13, again well said. I'd consider myself quite an avid gamer, and do play games every day, some quite seriously. I'm purchasing games every week, sometimes every day for weeks, partly because a new game seems to give me that much extra relief from the pain I get constantly. Though that said I wouldn't consider myself a hard core gamer. I was totally involved in one game for a couple of years to the exclusion of all else, so would probably have come under the umbrella of a hard core gamer, but no longer.

I play different games virtually every day now; jumping in and out of so many that I hardly become skillfull at any. Some games I play for longer, especially games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion (and I still occassionally get back into Battlefield 2 for a few weeks), but generally I only pay casually now. Hmmmmm, I seem to have strayed off the point lol. What I was trying to lead into (been up all night so am rather sleepy now) was that I agree with you about the games being for the casual gamer. There are few games a hard core gamer would find interesting here. But then the majority of people are probably not hard core gamers, so the project still a good one with plenty of juice left in it. (I hope)

Thanks for your insightful comments, they are always a pleasure to read. :)

Though it's late, I thought I'd add a respones to gpc111. I understand your frustration, although I can't relate because I'm neither an avid nor skilled gamer. I don't say this to drive anyone away, but I think GGOTD is now not the ideal service for the hard core gamer and may not be again. I still think it would be worth those folks dropping by, but the economics are now such that the games on this sight are more for casual gamers. GGOTD is simply not going to get the fastest, latest in graphics, most level intensive, highest skilled games anymore, even if it those games are or were ever given away for free. And if and when they are, as Whiterabbit says, there's a LOT of competition to market them.

However, for people with less skills looking for the kind of game that can be produced for a little less cost - like some of the quality puzzle games that have been given away here - I think GGOTD is still relevant. After all, a lot of people wouldn't destroy spaceships, devastate armies, or crash cars if you GAVE them the greatest versions of those games ever made. And even for the hard core gamers, you might find a game of this type every once in a while that will catch your fancy. Since I, like a lot of people, like something that will give me a little brainwork more than a lot of finger work, I'll still be dropping by.

Again, I understand your frustration, but please don't rag on GGOTD for not being the last word in games. After all, hardly any service is perfect. And everything here is free for a day and still appeals to hundreds of users. GGOTD still has a place, it may just not be for everyone.

I've not downloaded any games from Gametop in quite a while, but decided to check out the differences between the version we have been given today and the version that is available from Gametop. Someone had already mentioned that there were more vehicles available, but I also discovered that there were nearly twice the number of levels. There are 15 levels instead of the 8 we get in our version. The game is undiubtably the same game, but a leter version. I do feel that the gamegiveaway team have been ripped off with this version from hand made games. Why didn't they give us the later version? Also there are four vehicles available to unlock.

If you're not happy with today's game, but was hoping for a better vehicle based game, apart from the long list of freeware games linked to in the Wheeed games thread that I posted a link to in my comment at #1, there's an excellent ATV game available from Gametop called ATV Quadro Racing. It's got quite a realistic environment, is a 3D racer, and has some additional effects such as a boost for creating higher jumps, plus slow motion video when you do particular stunts. There's lots of moveable objects in the game, such as if you hit barrels and tyres, they will scatter across the race track. Hitting other ATV.s usually results in your ATV crashing, or knocking you unconcious. The higher the juimps and the longer they are, the more points you get in addition to whatever position you come in the race. It's quite an easy game once you get used to the controls, and is worth a check out imo; though when installing do watch out as there's a checkbox that asks if you want your home page changing to Gametop. Uncheck that and the install is fine.

Hi Kerry comment #59,

I use Kaspersky antivirus and Firewall suite, which consistently comes out on top over most other security products and I've not received any warnings whatsoever, let alone several alerts. Neither has anyone else. I appreciate your warnings, it's an admirable thing to take the time to post your warnings, but from the evidence that no one else has reported these problems, it may be that you’ve picked something else up from another source that is causing the alerts that you are getting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Watcher13 comment #57 ,

Thanks yet again for an excellent analysis of a giveaway game. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Connie comment #61,

If you've not read my later posts, (comment #245) try out the demo of Trials 2: Second Edition. Even though it's a trial you get as much game play as today’s game, and it's far superior IMO. I'm sure your children will love it immensely.

To JDPower comment #58,

Try the version available from Gametop, it's supposed to have an extra vehicle, though please do bear in mind the warnings I give about Gametop in my comment #16

You can download the Gametop version (which as somebody has already pointed out has had a name change to Monster Truck challenge (It's standard practice by Gametop, who change the names of most commercial arcade games they are giving away for free):

To GPC111 comment #56 ,

The advantage although small, is that you don't get the annoying browser script, that opens up your browser every time you close the game down; also you're not subjected to the risk of getting toolbars added to your browser, nor running the risk of getting your home page hijacked by Gametop, or similar free download sites.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To ur mom comment #63,

There’s a thread over in the forums specifically for suggesting applications and games that you’d like to see here on the giveaway project:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/1450

It’s not guaranteed that they would be able to get specific games, especially during this period of recession where most game houses are tightening their belts (an thus not wanting to giveaway thousands of copies of their games virtually for free – I say virtually because the game giveaway team do have to pay an undisclosed amount of money to be able to give these games away.

Unfortunately the original premise that the project brought to the masses has been severely compromised not only by the recession we find ourselves in, but by other game houses creating their own versions of a free game giveaway. If you’re looking for lots of free games of all genres try looking over at Gamehouse, Gametop or Freegamespick. Though each of these sites do have hidden surprises such as ad support, installation of toolbars, browser hijacking or at the very least opening your browser when you close the games down. There are other sites that giveaway free games such as MyPlyCity, but they are even more aggressive and force you to have toolbars installed and have your home page hijacked before you can play most of their games. Other game houses such as Big Fish and Alawar give away the occasional gem. Alawar give one away ever month, though you do have to have their game box installed. All the above have been mentioned many times here at the giveaway project. You can easily find their download sites by Googling each one. I’ve posted a link to Gametop above, in my comment to JDPower.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi James,

I think Vista will bite the dust a lot quicker than XP. Hopefully Win 7 will be a decent replacement though. (fingers Crossed)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Ali,

If you disappointed, why not check out the free games Synopsis over in the forums, you mayfind a game you'll like there; also post some ideas in the suggestions thread, which you'll find as a sticky on the front page of the forums. (I've also linked to it above via the comment i made to ur mom comment #63)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, (for tonight at least, because I have find a game for tomorrows free games project)

to the developer Hand Made Games, you have the potential of having a good game on your hands; physics based games are still in their infancy compared to many other arcade game genres, (imo),and deserve a place amongst the better games available to us now; however, there are several points that have been mentioned above by myself and other community members that really need addressing before this game has a chance of being successful; especially as there are better alternatives out there for the same price (i.e. Monster Truck Nitro and Trials 2: Second Edition

• You need to add a reset button, so if something goes wrong the game can be reset to the start of the game, or better still have save points along each track, so that if a reset is required you don’t have to restart from the beginning. Trials 2 definitely has this facility, and works really well. I know if I had to start from the beginning loads of times I’d just give up on the game in frustration.

• The bugs need to be fixed. When I pressed R hoping that there would be a reset option instead I found my truck falling through space as it sank through the floor of the game. Also the exploding drums. Although I was lucky to only experience the problem with the Truck blowing up once, some members have not been able to progress beyond this point. That’s enough to put anyone off this game.

• More tracks and different environments need to be added. Even if you just added another 8 levels it would be something, but only 8 levels is ridiculous. The demo I’ve referenced to above has more levels included and they are far superior to the levels you give.

• Add a high score table and link this to an online leader board. Check out Trials 2: Second Edition for an example of what I mean. Such a comparison chart adds another dimension to the game. Not only is it a leader board, it puts everyone whose every uploaded their times into a table, plus they add your nationality, which gives it another avenue of interest. (for example A player might not be in the top 20, but they may be the best from their country – lol)

• The options menu could give access to graphical enhancements so that those with older or newer computers can set up the game accordingly; enable a choice of music – such games play well with driving type music.

• Add more vehicles. Just the two makes it feel like a work in progress. You could add a whole raft of vehicles from drag racers, articulated lorries, and even motorcycles and three wheelers.

Strange how people say it doesn't work on Vista 64 bit. I have Vista 64 bit and the game works. As for the game it's self, I've played Monsters Trucks Nitro demo. (The game that this game tries to copy). The games controls and physics are wonky and way off balanced compared to it.

For the people who wants to play windowed mode, go to the folder where you installed it, and open the Config.cfg file with notepad. change the first rule fullScreen = 1 to fullScreen = 0. then you will play in a windowed mode of 1024x800.

I can't add to the game veterans point of view, mine is that of the novice to casual gamer:

My impression is that the attraction for novices and those with a low amount of feel - usually those of whose who are challenged in their dexterity (such as yours truly) - is limited. Not that I'm saying it's prohibitively hard, just that if a player gets it feel wise, they get it, and if they don't, they don't. Most novices will either make admirable process early and eventually burn through it, or they'll give up. This may sound overly obvious, but my point is that this is not really a good learning game, since it has practically no help and mediocre feel feedback. Mainly, I mean the roll controls which are relatively subtle.

And you can't avoid the obstacles by veering left or right. Actually, I'm convinced the roll controls are to help you prevent from flipping. They don't maneuver right or left. They, along with a momentary release of the forward button, or hit on the back button, control whether you noise dive forward or flip over backward. They should be labeled "roll forward" (right on the screen) and "roll back" (left). Again, this makes it more for vets than novices, who may puzzle awhile as to what all this is about. Anyway, I can't see where they help that much. Also, I don't believe there's an air bonus. If you land on your back, the game will eventually right you and declare "backflip". I believe the "air" is to just tell you you're airborne in certain situations, maybe when you're slightly out of control. Thanks, I can't tell when I'm in the air versus on the ground. (???)

My overall impression, especially since this is a 9.95 game with no practical help, is that this is mainly for mid level to addicted gamers ( :) ) who just want to add another little trinket to their collection. Just the addition of one tutorial level would greatly broaden this game's audience. Again, it's a plunge into the middle of the pool for a novice swimmer. They either get it or they don't.

Add the lack of help and the relatively low number of levels and options to a certain amount of bugginess, and my impression is that this developer came up with a little experimental (after all, it's "hand made") game, in which the background mattes are probably the most attractive feature, and just wanted to see if they could attract a few people and make a couple bucks.

Not that it isn't a worthy effort, but considering the many more, and apparently better, options out there, I doubt it's destined for a wide audience.

I will pass on this. This is a game that anyone can get free anytime. So what is the advantage of getting it here? GGAOTD used to mean something. They offered games for free from legitimate vendors. Now the offerings are low grade offerings that you can get from any d/l site. I say forget the games here. GGAOTD will never return to their former status. We had a 1MB offering yesterday..... that put unwanted icons on the desktop.

Sorry gpc11, I've had to edit the rest of your comment out. Your suggestion to others to use torrents is an affront to any decent law abiding citizen; not only that it's people like yourself who has just admitted to me that you download games virtually every day that should rightfully be paid for that is slowly wringing the neck of our arcade games industry. Do you really think it right to download games for free from illegal sources just so you can have your fun for free. how would you like it if whoever employs you decided to cut your wages, or not bother to pay you at all. What you are doing is tantamunt to the same thing and is theft. I'll say no more on the matter; suffice it to say I'm really disappointed.

From a gamer who does the right thing and pays for his games. (apart from those that are already free)

This is a great game. The controls are not overly complicated. The most important strategy is determining the best time to use the nitro burst to get you over the obstacles. I thought the graphics were very impressive. In there first two levels (I had to race three times to win bronze to unlock the second level) I found no problems with glitches or bugs. Vista 64 (without loading the games JRE)

I am enjoying this game!

Game is good for my son at five. It is the same as Monster Trucks Nitro but Monster Trucks Nitro is much much cleaner and better graphics wise. If you had to buy one the better is Monster Trucks Nitro. I will keep this one since a few hours of play for the cost of free is not bad. Be careful if you flip your truck. Don't press "R". Like WhiteRabbit says, the graphics go weird and you then fall forever.

I'm sorry. It's even worse! You don't even have to wait until the time runs out - because it doesn't. You have to reach the finish line before you can try again.

EllieB (#29): The thing is that you always have to wait until the time runs out before you can try again.
Often you already know after a few seconds that you won't finish the level in time, so a restart button would be really helpful.

Download and install went fine on my XP SP3. The game is a little buggy. The 2nd level is as far as I have played for now and every time I try it the game 'bugs' out and I can't see what my truck is doing. If I hold down the accelerator the truck will finish the level but I am not able see it.

I downloaded this same game 6 weeks ago from Gametop and it has the same buggyness. (is that even a word?) The only difference in the 2 games is the Gametop version is called Monster Truck 'Challenge' and has 3 different vehicles listed after the initial truck. Today’s offering is Monster Truck 'Trials' and has only 1 other vehicle listed after the initial truck (and it is not the same as the Gametop version). :(

Overall I am disappointed in this game because it could be a keeper if they could fix the bugs and add a level restart button. I once got stuck between 2 of the big railroad boxcar looking things for 5 minutes just to see it the level would reset itself and it didn't. I had to 'esc' and restart the level. :(

Anyone having trouble with uninstalls, check this site out. http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html It is one of the best uninstallers on the market, as it goes through and finds all files on the computer, and in the registry, and gets rid of everything associated with the problem. Not bad, once you get used to controlling the jumps by using the right and left arrow keys.
I've been trying to do a complete flip in the air, I'm sure it can be done, just not with my old reflexes.

Oh yeah, and the nitro doesn't work. The game more often than not crashes just after the car does!

#35 Shark Sandwich indeed! After two minutes my mod was 'none more black'...
Unbelievable how when you crash after a few seconds the time just keeps on going, no car anymore though... very lame.

Hi caperkco and robe77,

Have you tried using a different file archiver to unzip the files? I had a problem trying to unzip a particular game I'd bought from fileplanet (flatout 2). I kept getting a file corrupt message. I contacted fileplanet and they tested the file and found it okay. They gave me a link to downlaod the file directly and I still got the same problem. So I tried using a different archiver (7 Zip) and it worked first time. Although a file corrupt message is different to asking for a password, I think it may solve your problem so would suggest trying 7 Zip, or others if that's what you are using at the moemnt. I hope this helps.

Regards

WR

What a ridiculous statement - "when will games for VISTA be offered????????? Thats the games people need/want thanks"

Most people would not want that, as is borne out by the comments on this page, only 2 of 29 comments (currently) asking for vista. Even MS have admitted that vista is a dead horse, hence the unseemly haste to get Windows 7 out. Why expect people to develop for a dead OS?

Read this, you may realize how few people are actually using vista, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems

I've downloaded 3 times and in each instance, when attempting to extract the files, I also get "File 'readme.txt' is password protected. Please enter the password in the box below."
Am unable to proceed any further. And, yes, I used the mirror site version too.

A good time waster. Not difficult, but still fun. Thanks for the offer

Just the controls make me think of SuperTuxKart.

Have just read others comments. Have you tried backing up with the down key and having another shot when you can go no further? Sorry if that's obvious to most of you. I finished the trial first time but didn't get a medal
