Having problems installing today's game?
Please read the following before downloading and installing today's giveaway. If you are having problems installing the game, please check the FAQ's thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted. The main issue we have is with the giveaway wrapper, which uses a Themida based code to protect the games executable. Unfortunately Themida is also used to hide malware; so, as a precaution, some security software may block the installation and sometimes even delete the executable file. Blocking or deletion is usually determined partly by the way your computer has been configured. Usually you'll get a message saying ''the file is corrupted'', but in reality the files are okay. There are a couple of things you can do to overcome this issue. The first is to reboot in safe mode with networking, install the game then reboot, or secondly you can (at your own risk) temporarily turn off your security, install the game, then turn your security back on. A note of reassurance to those that choose the latter and quicker method. The game giveaway team have been giving away games for over a decade (Dec 2006 & prior to that, via the main site 2 or 3 times weekly from Oct 2006 to Dec 2006) and have 'NEVER' given away a game infected with malware; they always test every giveaway with several of the top anti-malware suites to ensure all games are free from malware. Another issue could be the size of the download. Because the servers have limited bandwidth, the more community members downloading at any one time, the slower the download will be. Even with a fast internet connection, you may find the download becomes excruciatingly slow because you may be sharing the download with many others. Using a download manager may help an individual, but overall, the more users who use a manager, the greater the strain on the service as each download manager will be seen as multiple download nodes, slowing down the download for those not using a download manager significantly; so, unless absolutely necessary, please avoid using a download manager. Thank you.
If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or if you have a problem installing or activating or getting today's game to work or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve please visit the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread, and which you can find HERE

Desktop - Good, easy to use Options; Main Menu is simple and colourful; Auto-Tutorial for the opening section of the game, plus for the Scroll for the After-World.  There’s a Notebook for info; a Hints that helps generally as well as in HOGs; an Inventory Bar; and the aforementioned Scroll Side-Bar with Map Buttons.
Play Modes -  Casual; Expert.
Music -  Mexican, varied, but a little irritating at times – I turned the speaker down a little.

maxresdefault2
HOG’s -   Interactive Lists; Interactive Shapes where you find some then place them, then find some more then place them; and Lists with 2 Items at a time that you click to activate their combination, then find and activate the next pair, and so on till you acquire the desired item – rather unusual
Puzzles -  These are okay, but beware clicking on the Blue Arrow – it doesn’t Start the Puzzle, it Skips the puzzle.  Of course some need to be Skipped.
Collections -  Only the scattered pages of the Scroll so far.
Graphics - These are strongly colourful, exotic Mexican settings in the ‘Real World’, but macabre as you would expect in the After World.  They are delineated, visual-novel style, which I do like, though some of the Items are a little small.  They are fun to explore, almost too much but not quite.
Map - None for the Real World – this causes a lot of Back & Forth clicking; a Map accessed beside the Scroll for the After-World, wit Sub-Maps for the different locations within the After-World.  They give you info on ‘Active Sites, but won’t allow you to jump from site to site – or so it seems.
Game-play -  This varies from straightforward to rather complex.  You need to gather Items and make a potion, bread, and paint- all preparations for the cross into the After-World.  Some of the actions require multiple layers of actions to achieve the desired result.  The After-World looks as though it will follow the same pattern, though the Scroll requires some exploration.  Clicking an Item to use on another, either generally or in a HOG, this Item goes into a circle which will then work on the next correct Item clicked.  There is no hand to pick things up with – the Cursor remains as an arrow, so there is no indication that you are hovering over the right Item.  This causes a lot of Point & Click which is tiresome.

Mexicana-_Deadly-_Holiday-_Magnoliajuegos6
Player Participation - Because of the way things are combined for you there is less PP for the player.  But you settle into the Game-play style fairly quickly.
Satisfaction Factor -  I thought this game was quite promising, rather intriguing, slowly becoming more macabre as you progressed.  However, due to its rather odd Game-play, and slow to react Puzzles, I didn’t get as far as I usually do for the hour trial.
Frustration Factors - Mainly the fact that some Puzzles didn’t respond upon completion, though I could have made a small error somewhere that I couldn’t detect.  Also the lack of Interactive Map for the Real World, and lack of Interactivity in the Map/s for the After-World.

Conclusion:
A well balanced HOG though nothing new will be found, basically a standard Hidden Object adventure. I liked the colourful scenes and the music gave ambiance to the story. 7 out of 10 from me.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Mexicana: Deadly Holiday and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games.

There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers new or fresh ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality? Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish or good may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games. Would 'you' give away thousands of copies of a game (or extra content for a game) away to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only needs a few moments of your time.
This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free instead of complaining about the way this site has changed, for example, they don't like MPC games, they hate HOG's, have had enough of Match Three and Time Management games, or they want to see the latest version of Call of Duty or some other big name AAA game given away or that they don't like Steam games. If something isn't for you then please move on to the next giveaway, or check out the forums HERE, HERE and HERE, where a few members of the community post details of various free games and free game sites as well as links to various indie bundle sites etc; you never know, you may find something that really interests you.
If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE; or If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it HERE via Big Fish Games, or via Steam as part of a 6 in one HOG bundle HERE, (Included in the 6 in 1 HOG bundle are Kronville: Stolen Dream, Cruel Games: Red Riding Hood, Panopticon: Path of Reflections, The Other Side: Tower of Souls, Lake House: Children of Silence Collector's Edition, Mexicana: Deadly Holiday).

The game downloaded very slow, but opened easily. Game play is smooth and graphics are good. The usual one activity at a time and puzzles or hog. It needs something to make it a little more interesting, such as a companion like a cat or imp to interact with. Thanks for another good game! Have a great week, Lee

Game installed smoothly. I learned long ago that I have to shut my anti virus off to down the game. I can turn it back on once the actually installation screen for the game apppears on the screen. I also learned that just shutting my antivirus "off" didn't actually turn the shields off. I am running Avast on a Windows 7 system. I stumbled across the place to turn off the shields long enough to do what I needed by right clicking on the avast icon in the bottom right tray. Maybe that will help some people. Safe mode works too, but I don't like using it because I have so much junk on my computer that is takes FOREVER to reboot.

As for the game, it seems like a fun game, although I didn't get very far into it. What I found frustrating is that the things you need to click on don't always follow the instructions given in the tutorial. Like I already hit a spot where you need to move to a new scene but the curser didn't change to the symbol for that. I have the game in casual and have also found that there are places you need to click that don't sparkle. I haven't even made it to actually making the bread yet and these are what I have seen. It's my guess there will be more and you will have to think outside the box to make progress. There were some other little glitches like that but can't remember what they are.

Well, so far, I love this game! And I'm not having any problems with it. And the text didn't fly by too fast for this slow reader to read either. :-) I don't know how long it took to download cause I set it to downloading and went to bed. The opening cutscene was intriguing and caught my attention. So far, the puzzles aren't difficult. I like a little challenge but I hate it when it gets to the point of me pulling my thinning hair out! So, I hope they get a tad bit more difficult but not too much.

Thanks for this game! I'm running Windows 7, Home Edition, 64-bit

I am also having crashing issues while playing this game. Three times it crashed while trying to take the 4 balloons. I then tried doing other tasks first and was able to move on. Then it crashed going to another scene.
I'm on Windows 7. Looks like a nice game so I will continue to try and play it.

Not terribly long to download game. Installs well, and also runs well on my Windows 10 laptop. The graphics are a bit cartoony, but that is just the style. They are well done all the same. I have not run into any problems thus far, but of course, I have just started to play. Got as far as baking my 'dead bread', and now I have to go looking for a pastry cone of frosting. I think this will be an enjoyable game to play through, and I hope it is a long one, considering the size. As always, thanks for the game !!

I repeatedly tried to download, and got nothing. It shows 0.0/1.0 GB, and never starts. Several times I got the message that GOTD was not sending any data, and had to restart the download, but no data is downloading. I never had problems downloading games, until today.

Hi Linda, because the file is quite large for an arcade game, more community members will be downloading it at any one time. The more that join the download, the slower the download becomes. Slow downloads are more prone to problems downloading; dependent on your provider and connections. If you've already tried and failed to get the download, I suggest you get one of those free download managers, File hippo is one place you can find free download managers, for example HERE, or search for one yourself. Most managers save the data that's been downloaded in case of any breaks and continue to download when the data stream continues; this assures you a full download. I only suggest not using one in my review if your downloads are usually okay in a single stream. If a lot of community members used a download manager it would impact on those that don't in that it would reduce their download speeds significantly. I sometimes use a download manager myself (though not for files from here) that will download the files in sixteen separate bits, then join them once fully downloaded (Called Internet Download Manager) that a good friend recommended a few years ago. It's not free, but they do have a free trial. That is like having sixteen different community members downloading. Each one being much slower than the whole.

Can no longer get games here. Regular software are fine though. My AV is off, but installation brings up message saying "Failed to launch program". I give up, not going to waste my time here anymore. bye bye

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

See my comments to tiscrea ©. It may be that you are running more security than you realise. Try rebooting in safe mode with networking, then install. Thousands of community members are able to install these games, which implies that the problem is with your own computer and not the giveaways.

Thank you for that safe mode advice. It has worked, but I think it shouldn't be necessary to be able to install a game. A lot of people are afraid of or don't know about safe mode anyway. Why make it so difficult for a lot of people? Anyway, I hope is was worth it. Thanks again :-)

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Because it worked that implies that you have other security running in the background other than the Avira software you mentioned. something else blocked the installation. A anti adware program could be responsible, or another anti malware program you may have installed previously. I had the same issue last summer and couldn't figure out what the issue was. turned out a program I thought I'd deactivated was still running in the background.

Addendum in response to using Safe Mode

I agree, it shouldn't be necessary, unfortunately, something had to be done about the hackers who were ripping off the giveaway games before the new wrapper was introduced. The giveaway team introduced Themida code into the wrapper because community members were ripping off the giveaway executable by copying it from the app data/local/temp folder during the installation of the game, where an unprotected version of the executable resides temporarily until the game has been fully installed. If you opened up the temp folder and copied the executable that was named differently, but it was obvious which file to copy, then rename it from .tmp to .exe, you'd get the games unprotected executable. Not only that, they were actively promoting this rip off method by posting You Tube videos of how to do it and also spreading the word on popular game sites. The executable from the app data folder allowed them to install the fully registered game whenever they wished on any computer at any time after the giveaway had ended, effectively giving them a full unprotected and registered paid for version for free. Some even uploaded these executable's of the game onto peer to peer sites where they could be accessed by thousands of others and where I expect some still reside. This caused great consternation with the developers who were giving games away here and I'm sure forced some to leave the project before the giveaway team came up with the Themida wrapper solution. Unfortunately, because Themida code can also be used to hide malware, it has been an issue for some community members ever since because their software sometimes blocks the giveaways. Booting up in safe mode with networking should enable community members to install the game, but it is then assumed the community member would re-boot into normal mode thus allowing their security to be reloaded. Ultimately the responsibility for Themida being included resides with a section of this community who ripped off and advertised the fact about those early games. Sadly there will always be those who spoil it for the majority.

tiscrea ©, I agree. Not only do most people not know about the safe mode, but it disables your security software completely (including firewall, which doesn't cause any conflict), so unless you remember to start your firewall manually it's anything but safe mode.
Anyway, after successfull installation in safe mode (Win 7 64-bit) the game crashes upon startup, both while still in safe mode and after rebooting into normal mode. This is the 3rd week in a row that a big (north of 500MB download) game causes problems with installation and execution. No other software on this site or other has ever done that. I don't even have to disable my antivirus normally. This is getting frustrating and annoying.

Brilliant, I'm looking forward to playing this because it's the sort of thing I like.

It downloaded quite slowly, probably due to server issues in our area, installed quickly and easily. Opened up the game and have just put my name in and set it at casual, with a tutorial (because why not), turned down the sound and will be back at it later today or tomorrow.

Many thanks GGOTD and MPC for another fun game.

Have downloaded this twice (not funny for a 1G download). Both times I tried to un-zip it and received a "general error 0x80004005". Fails to extract with window's own unzipper and with 7-Zip. Testing with 7-zip reports "CRC failed".

Although I recommend not using a download manager in my review, that's only because of the number of community members downloading this large file; (see my explanation in my review). With a download manager, it will ensure you get the full download, even if there are interruptions to the download

Reply   |   Comment by Pete  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Pete, I'd suggest getting and using a download manager program that supports flawless retries on all large downloads as browsers even modern ones downloaders only are not built to be resiliant to maximise the download process. I can't recommend any currently developed downloader as I still use an old favorite that is not really suitable for latest versions of windows and is no longer developed in the way I liked (later versions of the software added a bittorrent client which could not be stopped if the program was running which is counterproductive when doing http/s/ftp downloads). I'll leave it for others to post their favorites if they want :-)

I downloaded and installed on windows 10. There are 2 levels of difficulty that i like. You have an option to skip the tutorial if you want to. I had an issue with the game closing when doing certain tasks but when i restarted the game it would continue with no problems, I dont know if it was my computer or a problem with the game itself. I will keep playing this game for a little while even with its issues as i enjoy the gameplay.

Rosalind, I'm having the same problem. So far it's closed 3 times without an explanation other than something went wrong and if there is a solution I'll be told. When restarted it worked awhile and then quit again. I'm also using windows 10 and I usually have no problems with MyPlayCity or Big Fish.

Marcy,

Don't know if it will help or not, but in Windows 10 I normally navigate to the game's folder in Windows Explorer, right-click on game.exe, then click Troubleshoot compatibility. This will bring up a wizard-type window that asks you to try the proposed settings -- if they seem to work [the game starts & displays correctly etc.], you close the game & can save those settings -- if not, you have the option to try again with different settings. Haven't had any problems or issues with any MPC-type games doing it this way on a PC & laptop, but of course it could be something's just off with this game.

mike, Thanks for all the suggestions. However, since i get games here all the time from MyPlayCity AND big Fish and never have any problems with them shutting down often, the problem is with the game, not my machine. There is no game out there that should make us go into Safe Mode for any reason. I'm using Windows Defender, not some fancy virus program. Either they work on a simple system or they don't. :-(
