At first I thought-great another great game similar to Gem Ball-not. Played the game 3 times--finally...the 3rd game--hard level; I had not lost a 'life'--until level 25...there's a flaw in this game---2wice the ball passed through the center of the 'paddle' {ship}. Never to play this game again.

It activated, but wouldn't run, saying "can't find bass.dll" I uninstalled and reinstalled with same problem. By the way, when I tried to get on the forums before, I was unable.

I really like this game. The only con is that I can't save the game to go back to. Have to start at the beginning again. ;( Other than that, this is my kind of game. Hyperballoid has been my favorite so far. This one is trailing second. Thanks, GGOTD.

Re: #30 Donna: It's the full registered version, not a 60 minute trial. You need to run the file activate.exe that came in the zip file you downloaded from here.

If you didn't see activate.exe or readme.txt in the zip it's probably because you are telling your unzip program to "Install" instead of "Extract". Either that or you are using the unzip program in Wizard mode, which never shows you the other two files in the zip.

Open your unzip program (most likely Winzip), look for Options in the menu an change it from Wizard to Classic. Then go back to the zip file and double click it, you will then see the file activate.exe, make sure your internet connection is open and double click activate.exe to run it. When you get the messages the game is successfully activated you can close those, then reopen the game to find it fully registered.

I've been playing breakout games since the original decades ago. And this is one of the best. Graphics and sound are simple, yes, but the gameplay is solid. Very enjoyable!

Hi everyone ;)

I'll try most games once, as long as they're from a trusted site. I happen to be enjoying this game at the moment, (still playing,) and ready now to begin Mission 3.

Graphics seem fine on Windows XP, though as someone said earlier, perhaps appearing a little flat. However, (to me,) they aren't as awful as they appear to some ;)

I know that I've become spoiled in my expectations of games graphics these days, so I did find the lack of glitz and 3D disappointing. Then I think back to the days of television ping-pong, where we had nothing but black white - anyone else remember? *laughs*

I didn't see any dramatic spike in CPU usage at all.

I didn't experience any problems during installation, it actually went very smoothly. UI of the game is good, buttons well placed and easy to find.

As always, my sincere thanks go to the developers without whom such a public service could not have emerged - and of course to GOTD, who have undertaken such a huge project and could use all the support that comes their way. ;)

I'm also a big 'breakout' fan & this is a nice addition to my collection. It loads fast; runs fine; graphics are at or above average; has a couple of interesting variations on the theme; and beter sound than most. Thanks guys - nice choice.

P.S. ON ERROR MSGS.: It's possible those getting error messages or jerky game movement may not have graphic cards capable of hardware acceleration. That's not mentioned in the system requirements but it IS in the game's options and that option is turned on upon installation. If you can't open the game to shut it off try looking in the game's main folder, look for a file named config.ini in that folder. Open the file in notepad, then look for the line labeled: btn3DHardware=1 and change the value 1 to a 0

I almost didn't try this after reading Bobby's comment that games can't be saved. That's annoying if you don't have time to finish games all in one shot, most times I don't have that much time to blow on a game. Then there was the comment from WhiteRabbit, the extreme arkanoid fan who didn't much like this one. Tried it anyway, although it's not anywhere near as good as Gem Ball or Hyperballoid offered previously it's OK.

Games can't be saved but levels are separated into frames of ten each, frame one is 1 - 10, frame two is 11 - 20, etc. As long as at least one level per frame is completed then that frame is accessible when reopening the game. You will have to repeat that first level in the opened frame but levels go quickly. Frames are further separated into missions of 30 levels each, for a total of 90 levels. Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty choices. Not very challenging unless you choose Hard, but a pleasant enough coffee break kind of game.

2D graphics and standard breakout bricks but the changing backgrounds look nice and the bat is a spaceship with a large bow on the front. Standard bonuses like bat expanders, fast, slow, balls X3, and negative bonuses like bat decreasers. There's a fire ball that instantly destroys bricks that take three hits from the standard ball. There's space ships at the top that shoot back and can destroy the bat, but it's not as difficult as it sounds and you can destroy the ships by hitting them until their health lines run out. You can hit them with the ball or with dropping bullet bonuses that you catch. This game looks a little like a 2D breakout and a 2D space shooter combined.

Not worth it's normal asking price of $19.95 but OK for free. Lately large discounters have very good prices on commercial games, especially for those who wait and buy slightly older games rather than only the newest latest-and-greatest. Considering that, these smaller indie developers may need to lower the standard price of $20 if they expect to compete. Sometimes there's comments posted here requesting games like Age of Empires, the Stronghold series, etc., but don't expect to see those kinds of games here. Besides the setup files being too big, commercial developers are already well known through advertising and presence in retail stores. They don't need exposure for their products that comes with giving away games for free, small independent developers need that and that's why those are the games offered here.

Well, it is not the best breakout clone I've seen.
I found MACH better breakout clones. One is called Brixout XP
http://www.gametop.com/download_free_arcade/games_breakout_xp.html and another one is Star Ball
http://www.gametop.com/download_free_arcade/games_star_ball.html

They are really cool and fun!

Not much to add from previous posts. I personally like that it can be played with your mouse as well a keyboard. Each "mission" is brief enough to allow for frequent changes in playingfield for a change of pace.
No problems installing - activating game. It has the usual options to change audio, Etc. and runs smoothly on my computer without lowering game settings.
Thanks & "thumbs-up".

I love arkanoid clones, normally - not this one.

Normal play is like slow play on most clones - Fast is like a slow normal.

YOU CANNOT SAVE AND RESUME - you have to play the game all the way through if you want a total score - who has the time to do that?

Curved "bat" is interesting, but sometimes the ball passes through the bat without hitting it!! And powerups are added when the body of the spaceship bat hits them so you can try and avoid something you don't want with the bat, nick it with the bat body and end up with that "feature" even when you don't want it.

Rating? How about "early beta" - not yet ready for public release, let alone asking someone to pay for it.

As i am an AVID breakout fan THIS program is a sore disappointment!
"Bat" movement is irregular and jerky.
Ball movements are just as irregular and additionally VERY monotonous.

there IS lots of potential to this effort, but many hours of refinements are sorely needed to bring the play up to acceptable levels akin to those demonstrated in gem-ball, the "warkinoid" series, and the reflexive arcade efforts.

keep at it and you'll soon have a REAL WINNER!!!!@

Level one was too hard for me at the fast speed and curve design. Maybe better on a slow computer.

"Cest La Vie" Ballpeen...there’s always at least one game a week that suits most people. There are only a few genres I’ve not seen such as card games, but they are ‘two a penny’ from most freeware sites. However most arkanoid fans will probably have most of the offerings that are given away free here. Thankfully I didn’t purchase this one for the reasons mentioned in my previous post above. However the game does improve as you progress to the next level set. Besides being able to start at level 11 instead of having to go through all the levels from the first level set, provided you played through to the end of the level set, it seems to open up new power up's; still fairly run of the mill, but it does increase the enjoyment of the game. The background also changes, but I think from the images shown on the different level sets there are only three different images. I wonder if it's possible to tweak them :). I would advise any arkanoid freak to play this game on hard, with the smallest bat and the fastest ball. Then it becomes a little challenging on some levels.

When capturing a slow ball there's no discernable difference in speed as far as I can make out, however thankfully the fast ball is obvious, although still not fast enough for my preference. I'll probably play through the rest of the levels when I've finished a couple of recently purchased games such as Robot Ball and Magic Ball 3.

I bet we won’t see peggle :( on this project), a game that try’s to emulate the old arcade machines that had a ball that you had to flick into specific areas to win awards. Not quite the same, but very similar. I've just discovered it. For those who are not averse to still buying arcade games I suggest you try out a demo of it. I’ll certainly be buying it just as soon as I get some more money transferred over to my PayPal account…Yeah….:) One of the best games I've see recently that isn't arkanoid.

I love this game. The techno-geek in me loves the hi-tech feel. And the music fits really well. Rockets, bullets, even 7 balls at once. And the enemies shoot back...that keeps you on your toes!

Gota love these types of games. Wish we had a rating system 1-10. Definately give it an 8. Reminds me of the old Amiga game Mega ball. ONly reason I gave it an 8, no save capability.

I like that you can maneuver through the levels quickly and the booming voice announcing, "Fireballs!" is a nice touch. It would be nice, though, if he could announce a few other things, like what the falling objects represent. And I agree, you should be able to save your progress once you successfully complete each level. All in all - really fun game - Thanks GGOTD team!!

As a free game, yeah this is okay and playable, but it doesn't give me the lift I get when playing 2D arkanoids like Aky's XP Breakout and Richochets trio of arkanoid games, or some of the more recent 2D games like Warkanoid 2 and Ultranium 5. Even Wreckerball Dreams is better than this game and that's Freeware. (another freeware to try is Jarkanoid 3 which is at least on par with this game (IMO). For the former you can get the link from the games section of the freeware library or just google for both of them.

This is one I decided not to buy when I tried the demo as I found the game play lethargic and the power ups run of the mill. The only thing that gives this game any merit is the space ships that fire back at you, once you get past level 3 or 4. and maybe the 'reasonable' ball physics. I'm an arkanoid collector and thank Funny Arts and the GGAotD team for giving me this to add to my collection. I wouldn’t buy it though.

auuugh~ they shoot back!

the kids 'n grandkids should enjoy this game. Power-ups like machine guns, fireballs and magnets keep the play lively and the brightly-colored moving targets will give them some challenge.

Drawbacks: you cannot save a game to continue later
... and some of the backgrounds have very dull, uninteresting colors;
very one-dimensional, which is in opposition to deep-space theme.

Should be an enjoyable game for the younger kids, but probably not as intriguing to teenagers or adults. It is a creative take on an older Galaga or Arkanoid theme, and for that it gets a definite thumbs up. Thanks to the Funny Arts development team for allowing me to try this game, and thanks to the Giveaway team for another good choice.
