Darn, I have twice missed this game. I want it, I want it - please. The first time it said I missed it but there seems to have been a problem with the clock and the noticifaction system because I am in South-East Asia. Come on guys - How about timely notice next time.

.........................Moderator comment....................

Hi Michael, the notification system has never worked properly. It's just as easy to quickly check the site each weekend that go to your Email to see if there is a notification. The game ran from 12 midnight to 12 mdnight Pacific Time which was the correct time for this particular giveaway. Of all of Wheemplay's games Mechanism III has to be one of the best. At least you can play it online if you wish and you may be able to find somewhere to download it, but I've not bothered to search myself.

Absolutely unclear what it is you're expected to do or how you're expected to do it. Zero documentation (and, no, the developer's expansive, vague and digressive post at the top of this forum does not count as documentation because HE DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED, and telling us there are YouTube videos to show us how to play does not make up for the complete absence of documentation in the install). Download installs an EXE and no other files, no shortcuts on Desktop or Quick Launch or Start Menu. Is it 1993 again and I just dreamt the past 19 years? I don't think I've seen software that required the end user to create his own launch shortcut since, oh, maybe Doom 2. The brief description above is a lot of empty marketing hyperbole, full of buzzwords not supported by the game itself. "Save the world"? "Steampunk"? "Time collapse"? What? Where? What does any of that have to do with this game? All this is is a bunch of random Gothy-looking shapes, some of them moving, and something that looks like a sawn-off lever-action rifle that can be used to draw blue lines; for what purpose, I have no idea. The lines break objects, but why I have no idea. Sometimes an object will collapse and you'll get a message "Portal Reached!" but I have no idea what or where the portal is, or whether reaching it is a good or bad thing. There are numbers off to the side, one of which is obviously a timer, the other of which has no purpose I can determine. Breaking anything with a blue line ends the level, but I don't know if I've failed or succeeded. It takes only one line drawn to achieve this, so if this is a success it's so not a challenge that I can't see why I should put in that tiny bit of effort. If you're the mindless sort of person who thinks doing anything at all--however pointless--in front of a computer is worthwhile, then I guess this is right up your alley. If, however, you were wanting to play an actual game with goals and strategies, it's very definitely not.

.......................Moderator comment.................

Thank you for your feedback Doug, much appreciated.........This is a simple physics based puzzle, the aim of which is to get the clock like object(called the hero) to the blue portal. You use the cutting tool to allow the clock face to move from point A to point B to point C etc using the various objects to swing, pivot and roll until it has reached the blue portal.

I did briefly explain the aim of this game above in my post at comment # 1 i.e.

Basically Mechanism III is a physics based game where the object of the game is to figure out how to get the hero (The clockwork looking circle) from one point to another using a cutting tool to cut various wires and objects that help to move the hero to a portal. There’s a wide selection of objects, some of which you can cut and others that you can’t. You can see the variety of objects that you’ll come across by opening the levels editor. It’s pretty much intuative so most community members should easily be able to create levels of their own. The game uses physics based movement which makes the game a gem IMO. These types of games always grab my attention.

I also explained that I'd not had enough time to write a full review due to family commitments early this morning. If you are new to this project then I'll explain that I am a volunteer moderator who for no other reason that I've nothing better to do, write quick reviews of each game that's given away each Saturday and Sunday. I'm just like you, a user, but over the last few years the owners have usually let me know what game is going to be given away the night before the giveaway, so I'll spend a few hours before the giveaway writing up a brief review after I've had chance to play the game. I usually include other information such as installation procedures and problem solving for those who may have difficulty in getting the games to work.

So, 99 cents for nice graphics, cool background music, playability at all age levels, and a level editor that lets you design and play your own puzzles? Oh, and it can play off a thumb drive?

So what's all the whining and "thumbs-down" about? I say WIN! Nice game, and easily worth the less than a buck they're charging for this - I used to spend more than that to get much less gameplay at an arcade.

It'd be nice to save your levels. It'd be nice to have untimed play, too. But otherwise, great job, developers, and thanks for the freebie, GGotD team!

........................Moderator Comment.......................

I agree. i'm rather surprised at the low thumbs up for what is a decent game; but then the thumbs up isn't a very good indicator.

Greetings,

If anyone is interested in an example of "steampunk", all you have to do is watch the movie Wild, Wild West starring Will Smith and Kevin Klein. That was classic steampunk, especially the giant steam powered spider.

Cheers - Jon651

whats about crysis 2? oder gta iv? thats are just creepy casual games here. bah.

........................Moderator comment......................

The download servers would never cope with the download rush. consider on an average weekend around 8000 downloads are made. If the giveaway team were to manage such a gift a lot of users ould never get their games in time. If you want such games then watch out on Steam or Greenman gaming for some amazing deals. (though Steam and EA are still at loggerheads so no EA games at the moment on Steam apart from earlier ones).

Mechanism III installed without problems on vista x64.

I really like this game! Great graphics and challenging puzzles + level editor. Definitely a keeper!

Like other comments already said, the Walkthrough Button in the game goes to a dead link. I think they really should fix this! A better explanation what this game is about would be nice to. It becomes clear when you play the easy level, cause it tells you what to do and than you know the aim of the game, but it would be nice to know that before hand.

Thanks ~ Wheemplay, GOTD & Whiterabbit

What is a "steampunk" world? I know what world is but never heard of the adjective, is it a teenager fad lingo?

……………………..Moderator comment………………….

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain or "Wild West"-era United States—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville.

Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace's Analytical engine.

Ok W7 x64. Can be full screen (borders on sides), mute music, no sliders. Cut lines (can help to chop thru a couple at a time in some spots). Found a few working youtube lines w/ Bing. Easy level solves 11-15 is one. I stopped on 11 being bit tough to get timing right activating top circle & then snagging bottom moving circle that rolls fast. Nice freebie but no keeper long term for me. YRMV. Fans seem to love it. Thanks GOTD & Wheemplay & that drat wabbit.

Please add a "Relaxed" play mode with no timer. My husband loves this type of puzzle game but if they have any kind of timer then he just won't even bother trying the game.

Installed fine on XP SP3, good graphics, good puzzles. It could have an "Exit" the game button and an instruction "Help" file would be nice. Thanks for the game!!

WR's link for the walkthrough of the easy levels 1-27 is wrong. It just circles back to this page. The correct location is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAlsgRhG39U&feature=related

His other links to walkthroughs are correct.

Walk through videos from these reviews may or may not be fine (I haven't checked yet). But, the walk through button within the game should be fixed or removed, or link to the walk through videos posted here. When I clicked it, it was a dead link. A dead link button should get fixed- especially if videos are out there on the web already and it just links to those. Nice graphics, quick moving, same Windows 7 warning on install that I get with all Wheemplay that it may not have installed correctly (but always has and works fine). I'll check out the playing strategy stuff later, but that end has been reviewed adequately here too.

I can play Mechanism III for free on every flash games site. Why I should pay 0.99$ for free game?

..................Moderator comment.................

You're not paying for it today, it's free. A downloadable package with a levels editor; all nicely set up to play on your PC. Of course I'm sure if you look you'll find sites where you can download it for free. I suppose it's the convinience.

I personally don't like playing browser games. Most have too many distractions around the perhiphery of the game; give me a downloadable that i can play on my computer offlie if necessary.

The downloadable version is also great for those who have bandwidth caps. Remember not everyone has unlimited bandwidth. The more you play online with a bandwidth cap, coupled with other bandwidth sucking activities, will soon see you having to pay for the extra used. A friend of mine has to pay $50 if he goes over his limit. That's enough to purchase a triple A game.

Please make a little movie to present what this game is all about - before people install it. I can not figure out enough about it before installing. Is this a physics game? The movie should show moving pictures of what is seen on the screem when someone is actually playing.

.................Moderator comment.................

If you check my review @ comment #1 you'll find four videos of various levels, all animated so you can see what the game play is like. I also mentio that it is a physics based game.

The game's 2D physics engine and arcade style make the puzzles challenging yet non-repetitive. The level editor is a welcome addition.

Whiterabbit-uk I see that this version is the same as has been given away 19th Dec.
So if it's possible please read once again r0lZ's comment #11 from that day. When I clicked button "Walkthrough" it still opens page which not exists. In my opinion editing code to add 1 letter could be better even if it takes about few seconds.

.................Moderator comment...................

Yes it is, and yes you are right. Unfortunately I have no access to the developer; tohugh one of the key holders who usually informs me of what games are coming up does. I'll Skype her and ask if she can pass on the info.

I just wish more of the developers of these games would show some interest in the feedback, or at least give us some indication that they have read the feedback.

Hmmm...I wonder why nearly 2/3 of the people dissed this game? It's excellent, I think. The graphics are every bit as good as they need to be. Movement is realistic (which is important here as you have to count on things moving in predictable ways). You discover how to play the game as you go. Really, the only criticism of this is that the opening screen is a bit confusing, but only in that there are several options to pick from, and it is not immediately obvious which one to choose (ahh! read what the buttons say and pick the one to play - astounding - never thought of that!)

All of this for 99 cents! We get so many Weemplay games here that I feel guilty about getting them without paying (but I'll get over it!). Still, I wish developers took the opportunity to provide a PayPal link so we could tip them!

....................Moderator comment.................

I agree with you Michael. It's a good game, well worth adding to any game library.

Off Topic,

Whiterabbit, did you see Stephen Fry in The One Show?
He and Peter -Lord of the Rings- Jackson are going to remake Dambusters!
If they don't use the same music score, they shouldn't bother, I think.

...............Moderator omment...............

No I didn't; though Stephen Fry is one of my favorite TV personalities. I saw him live back in the 80's wen he was doing the university rounds with Hugh. That was a great paring. Yes I agree re: the music. Stil, with Jackson at the Helm should be an interesting re-make. :)

Installationl>:

The downloaded zip file is 10.3Mb and unzips to a read me file that tells you the terms and conditions plus a dual activation and setup file. The game installs to:

C:\Games

by default, but you can change the path if you wish during the installation wizard. There is no shortcut installed to either the desktop or Start menu Programs list, so you’ll have to create one yourself from the programs executable (.exe) which can be found via the above path. There’s no folder installed. This is a flash game so comes self-contained. If you want a folder you’ll have to create one yourself. (-; If the game doesn't work it may mean you need to either install or update your flash installation.

The game works on Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Win XP Pro 32 bit and Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I’ve not tested it on my Vista installations yet.

There's no options menu or configuration file. The game has been designed originally as a flash browser game, so you have to play it in a window. If you want the window larger you’ll need to reduce your screen resolution to something like 800 x 600.

The Gamel>:

You can play this and it's predesessors Mechanism I & II 24/7 via many browser games sites for example HERE. Mechanism III also includes a levels editor that enables you to make custom made levels, which you can play via the levels editor; however there doesn't appear to be anyway to incorporate the custom levels into the main levels selection screen.

Spend part of last night waiting at the airport for my daughter (plane was 2 hours late), so didn't get time to expand on the previous review, which was also cut short for some reason. This was given away back in December 2010 where it received a positive 57% out of 387 votes. you can read all of the previous 65 comments HERE

I have posted several you tube videos that will give you a much better idea what this game is about than me waffling on about it, suffice it to say I'm very happy with this game, which is reflected in the score I've given it in my mini conclusion.

Basically Mechanism III is a physics based game where the object of the game is to figure out how to get the hero (The clockwork looking circle) from one point to another using a cutting tool to cut various wires and objects that help to move the hero to a portal. There's a wide selection of objects, some of which you can cut and others that you can't. You can see the variety of objects that you'll come across by opening the levels editor. It's pretty much intuative so most community members should easily be able to create levels of their own. The game uses physics based movement which makes the game a gem IMO. These types of games always grab my attention.

The following is the developers introduction to the game (edited):

Mechanism 3 is the third instalment in the Mechanism physics-based puzzle series inspired by Splitter, which is available for the PC,Mac and soon the iPad, where players cut an incredible variety of shapes to save the world from time collapse. Immersed in a steampunk world with stunning visual design, Mechanism is pure eye candy. And with 80 unique levels and level-editor, we've packed in hours of entertaining and addictive fun.

Conclusionl>:

I played several levels of this from the browser version and was really impressed with the excellent game play, the natural progression from easy to hard puzzles, the graphics and the inclusion of a simple to use levels editor. I think puzzle lovers will get hours of entertainment from this game. I love this sort of puzzle and think it's easily worth 8 out of 10 for excellent game play, increasingly difficult puzzles to solve and the inclusion of a levels editor. (-;
