I love mahjong but with the Mahjong Epic I got very bored with it quickly. These are boards I have played on other versions of Mahjong.

As a test I played one game relying totally upon the hints and made NO choices of my own. The game was lost! To confirm the game as laid out was possible I used show solution function and the game was winable but the Hints provided would not steer you in the winning direction! This I find counter intuative and downright deceptive! That is like someone offering you bread and giving you a stone. Which is somewhat sadistic and will certainly not teach you anything but to ignore the hints and despise the programmers IMHO.

It is a very good game if you have enough CPU/graphic chipset performance. If you have a low end system ie below 1GHz CPU and integrated GPU of older SiS 630 type then the drawing of end of level lighting effects will drag the thing to an almost halt and make mouse control almost non-existant. It was just usable using a pen and tablet in aboslute mode and being patient for the screen drawing to catch up with requested pointer position. It needs some options to remove the sparkly lighting effects from the display as they may be pretty but they do eat CPU cycles for typical older Directx 8 integrated chipsets let alone the even older Directx 7 chipsets.

Is fine on my Vista based laptops but they have CPU and GPU performance to spare because they have to just to keep vista happy!

This is a very nice game and runs perfect on XP SP2. The soundtrack is actually very very nice, and would be nice as even just background ambient music. The sound file is an "ogg" file which I am unfimilir with-> and very very small in size. There are "23.board 45.board etc..." files that are neat to look at in a text editor-> i think its neat how they did that. I don't know how somebody could put so much into such a simple tpe game. Everything is very nicely done. A+. Personally I am not into puzzle games, but it is just in time for fathers day egh?

hehe

Thankyou

A really big 'Thank You' to GGAOTD and Kristanix Games for this Mahjong game ... the dsl download/setup took under 2 minutes and plays without any issues on my Windows XP.

Thanks to WR - Stephen for his review, and also to the others. I use to play the 'Taipei' version all the time and forgot just how much fun I get from playing this type of mind-action game. THANKS!

Hey Stephen (#69) thanks for responding. my graphics card is a Radeon 9600 series set at 1680x1050 resolution, hooked up to a 20" widescren monitor thru a DMI cable. Its a very capable card and is up to the most current drivers. It works great with everything else I throw at it. I keep the system clean and maintained. The only thing I haven't tested is to see if the game is trying to link to kristanix when it runs. I have my firewall set to kill anything that is attempting to connect out if I have not given specific permission to do so. But.. its also getting late... I think I'll just go check out the other links you so generously provided for other free mahjong games - or should I call them 'Tiapei' games because that's what they were called when I first played this tile game. (am I showing my age?)
Thanks again and best regards.

#17 WR said, "The music reminds me of that Irish female singer".

Stephen, I don't know the singer you have in mind, but she (the vocalist in this game) reminds me of Charlotte Church.

To all - I am another one who doesn't normally have the music on while playing games, but this music, along with the varying and beautiful backgrounds, is so pretty and relaxing that I actually reshuffled/replayed 2 of the boards (willingly, I might add), because I so enjoyed listening it and watching the changing sceneries. Actually, that is the main reason I decided to download/play this game, as I 'fell out of love' with Mahjong some time back...:D. The little bit of time I have had to play it, I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone else who enjoys this type of game - even if you used to but don't anymore, give it a chance...you just might like it. ;)

Thank you very much for the link to Hong Kong Mahjong Diane. I checked the game out and didn't need to think about it. I bought it immediately. Brilliant four player game. I've not played four player Mah-jong since I was 17 or 18 back in the early 70's. That's a long time ago, especially when I loved the game. I enlisted in the army wen I was 18 and no one I knew played the game. They all prefferred card gambling games etc, so I buried my Mah-Jong set in the loft. It's been stored in various lofts ever since, lol.

I've got so used to playing solitaire Mah-Jong, that I never thought to check for a four player game. Again, thank you for finding the link for me. Did you purchase the game also???
I'd recommend checking it out to anyone. The link above is valid, but you can't get a demo. I bought my version from the following link, where you can get a demo version:

http://www.games2download.com/free-mahjong-games/hong-kong-mahjong.htm

To Bummed and Jose, Although the DX requitements (ie DX 7.0) are low, it could be a graphics card problem. Do you know what your graphic cards are?? If not you can check by going to the start menu, clicking on run, type in dxdiag then click okay. This brings the Direct X diagnostics window. You can find your graphics card by clicking on the display tab. It's the only thing I can think of. It may be that you need to update your graphics drivers. Another thing you could try is to defrag your hard drive. Sometimes if your hard drive is severly fragmented it can cause problems running some programs. It's worth a try. Sorry I'm not of more help. (I have my own problems at the momnt. We seem to have picked up one of those annoying malware programs that pretends to be a spyware program. This ones clled 'Antispycheck and keeps hijacking my browser and opening up several pages. grrrrrr. (somehow our A.V. program had been turned off. (don't ask, lol)

The game is free standing, so once you've installed it, just make a back up so that you can install it later, once you've sorted your computers out.

I too have problems when running the game. I've downloaded, installed and deleted twice but still will not run properly. When the game opened sometimes the whole picture can be seen, sometimes part of the pic.The words looked sort of funny, not properly formed.

I have Win XP2 and AVG. I have DX9c Could it be the anti virus thingy? I did try to exit from AVG when I downloaded and installed the second
time but the same thing happened. Please help as I very much
like this type of game. Thanks.

(Note: Similar problem occurred when I installed Zamby and the
Mystical Crystals which was given away earlier.)

The program installed and registered with no problems in Vista Home Premium SP1. I love Mahjong games and I especially like this one. It has beautiful backgrounds and the tiles are very easy read. The number of boards available is very cool. I usually turn off in-game music, but the Enya style music is so soothing that I left it on. Very enjoyable. A keeper. Thanks GGOTD.

While it is definitely an enjoyable mahjong game with decent graphic quality, it could use more resolution options to make it even better. Being stuck with 800x600 in windowed or full screen in an era of widescreen high resolution LCD monitors designed for MUCH higher native resolutions lessens its appeal greatly.

We have Mahjong Titans installed on the computers due to Vista, but this program is much more forgiving if you make a mistake & need to undo something. My wife is enjoying it greatly & my kids are having more fun with it than they did with Mahjong Titans.

If the developers would offer the ability to drag the window to a larger size &/or the option for various widescreen/fullscreen resolutions up to 1920x1200, I wouldn't hesitate to buy 1-4 copies of the program to install on our media center pc for family use (1920x1080 native), if not on the desktop (1280x1024 native) & notebooks (1920x1200 native) too.

It's definitely a "thumbs up", but could use a little more work to make it "perfect" for us.

Many thanks GOTD and Kristanix. Normally the first thing I do is kill the music track. This one seems to fit the game so I'll keep it running for now. The helpful hint is welcome as I have trouble sometimes with matches as the color/pattern blends into a blurred background image. This is an easy game so far and I like it that way. I can play/win this one. My blog for Saga and DarkOrbit is not so kind. Again - go Team GGOTD!

Hey, If your like Arlene and looking for real Mahjong I suggest trying out MahjongTime.com. For those of you that don't know; Mahjong is a Chinese game of skill, which involves four players. It's similar to gin rummy, the object of the game is to build sets, as well as get the highest point value. In order to do this, each player selects and discards tiles until an entire set of combinations has been made. MahjongTime.com is an online mahjong club where the worldwide community of mahjong players can play mahjong anytime, anywhere without having to download any software. In total they offer the five major mahjong versions that are played around the world:

. Hong Kong Mahjong
. American Style Mahjong
. Japanese Modern Mahjong
. European Classical Mahjong
. World Series of Mahjong

Even better, its free (except for tournaments, but you gan gain promotional points with free games if you really want to try those without paying) It really is a great site to look into.
Even if you dont know how to play they offer a video tutorial to help teach you (http://www.mahjongtime.com/intro.html)

Here is a little more information on the game I got from the site:

Mahjong Game History
'Mahjong' can be interpreted from Chinese as 'clattering sparrow', 'flax sparrow' or perhaps as 'hemp bird'. It is recommended that this is due to the fact that the tiles when mixed up make a musical noise suggestive of the noise of several sparrows squabbling over strewn food crumbs. It was not prior to the turn of this century until the west got a glance of Mahjong, when it was launched in the international colony of Shanghai and from then onwards in Japan, USA, and lastly Europe. When it was established in the west, it was asserted that its origins were cloaked in the mists of time, but most facts seem to point to the game being developed in the late 1800's in the Ningpo area of China.

Diverse mahjong games use pretty parallel basic rules, but different scoring and different plans, special hands and tile combinations. Although the game Mahjong as it is normally played today can be traced back only to the end of the previous century, the line of games that progressed to Mahjong is long and extensive. From around 800 AD card games were played which bear a resemblance to the way Mahjong is played. The cards used in these games looked a lot like the money used in those days.

Lately a mounting number of people understood the intellectual challenge Mahjong poses and the attractiveness and enthusiasm of the game itself. Thus, abundant clubs of mahjong fans have evolved and a whole philosophic system of Mahjong representation is now shaped up. Now, Mahjong is also frequently called a solitaire game due to their resemblance.

Mahjong Varieties
The original mahjongg game is a board game for four players rather similar to the card game "Gin Rummy", but played with tiles in its place of cards. There are at least 26 acknowledged arrays of mahjong: with the six major varieties being:

Alan's Zung Jung
American Classical
American Modern
Australian
British Official
Canada Mahjong
Chinese Classical
Chinese New Style
Chinese Official
Chinese Transitional
Dutch League Rules
European Classical (same as European Contemporary in 4 winds 1.0)
French
German
Hong Kong
Internet Mahjong Server
Italian Official
Japanese Classical
Japanese Transitional
Japanese Modern
Korean Style
Mahjong Masters Million
Taiwanese 16-Tile Mah Jong
Wilmington Advanced 12-Tile
WMPA Rules
Novice

I hope this helps out anyone looking to try the original Mahjong instead of solitare. =)
