………………………………Moderator Comment………………………...
We are off visiting family today and I've not played the game long enough to comment fully on the game. I'm not back until late this evening when I'll ‘hopefully’ add my own thoughts once I’ve had an opportunity to play the game. If it’s anything like the original and you enjoy farm oriented games, coupled with time management, this is probably one you’ll enjoy.
With regards to the problems with yesterday’s game. I installed the MPC version and didn’t get any crashes. On installing the giveaway version, the game crashed repeatedly, so I deleted it and reinstalled the MPC version, which works perfectly. Any progress you made in the giveaway version will appear in the MPC version.
Sorry folks, we didn't return home until the early hours of monday, so decided it wasn't worth finishing the review. Was too tired to play. Plus I also had Mondays game to review. As i'd been given a copy from the developer i felt it was more important.

Magic Farm 2
In Brief
A farm based time management game.

Installation:
Magic Farm 2 downloads to a 104 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set-up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives can save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 157 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Magic Farm 2
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop, three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

Introduction:
When the developer (Oleg) gave away the first version a decade ago, he also took on board most of the suggestions made by the community and updated the game over 20 times. He also allowed the community to download the newer versions via his web site. You can see the comments made from the original game HERE and my review of the first game with comments from the community HERE. I think the developer sold the game to MyPlayCity five years ago, so I doubt we will get similar replies from the developer with this version. The developers original web site no longer exists.

Conclusion:
I’ve not played the game enough to leave a fair conclusion at this time. Hopefully I’ll be able to leave one this evening once I return from our family gathering.
If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE; or, If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it directly from Big Fish Games HERE
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Magic Farm 2 with the toolbars etc. removed and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games.

Having problems installing today's game?
If you have a problem installing or activating or getting Magic Farm 2 to work please visit the problems section, which you can find in the FAQ's thread HERE. Also read through the community’s comments because ‘sometimes’ fixes have already been posted. The main issue we have is with the giveaway wrapper, which uses a Themida based code to protect the games executable. Unfortunately, Themida is also used to hide malware; so, as a precaution, some security software may block the installation and sometimes even delete the executable file. Blocking or deletion is usually determined partly by the way your computer is set up. Usually you'll get a message saying ''the file is corrupted'', but, the files are okay. There are a couple of things you can do to overcome this issue. The first is to reboot in safe mode with networking, install the game then reboot, or secondly you can (at your own risk) temporarily turn off your security, install the game, then turn your security back on. A note of reassurance to those that choose the latter and quicker method. The game giveaway team have been giving away games for over a decade (Dec 2006 & prior to that, via the main site 2 or 3 times weekly from Oct 2006 to Dec 2006) and have 'NEVER' given away a game infected with malware; they always test every giveaway with several of the top anti-malware suites to ensure all games are free from malware.
If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, if you have a problem getting the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve or if you have a game to offer the community you can do so HERE

Whiterabbit, thank you for your excellent insights, as always.

I've only played this game a little bit, so I can't really write a great review. So far, so good, is all I can say about it. I hope to have more feedback later, but I generally like to play these games a little at a time. This makes it awkward for reviewing, since I encounter problems long after the giveaway has ended.

It pains me to say the main problem I've been having is with the fact that many of the games offered are SO old (this part doesn't bother me), yet the versions of them given here on GAOTD aren't the most current.

More than a few times, I've been stuck in a spot in a game where there is nowhere to go, nothing to do, yet the game hasn't ended. I hope this won't be the case with Magic Farm 2, but if it is, it's extremely likely that by the time I find it, the game will no longer be available for this giveaway.

My point in mentioning the age of the games is this: with a game that's anywhere from 5 years old on, they've obviously been patched and refined, or people would no longer be playing them. So why games should get "stuck" when they're so old is unfathomable. These problems would have been fixed long ago, so why aren't we at least getting the most current version, with all of the bugs worked out?

With the latest two James Patterson games, both times I got to spots where things didn't work right. But those games weren't recent. Twice in a Blue Moon left me at an empty map with nowhere to go; that game is from at least 2009. It's 9 years old and GAOTD can't provide the most recent, bug-free version?

The more recent problematic one, Little Black Lies, is from at least 2010. After 8 years of this game being around, it's still buggy in the GAOTD version? That one had a problem where obtaining a mine map wasn't possible. Without the map, one cannot go any farther, but the mechanism in the library that's supposed to provide it wasn't even available.

Again, I don't understand why, with games that are over 5 years old, the bug-free versions aren't the ones available here.

I'm giving GAOTD one more chance with Magic Farm 2, but if I find a similar problem - and this game is pretty old, too, from at least 2011 - that's it. It's useless to play a game that can't be played to completion. I've been using this site for years and have noticed a huge difference between the earlier offerings and the ones now. I even tried writing to the email address for such concerns and was told the games are provided "as is." Which would be fine if they were the latest bug-free versions from perhaps 5 years ago...but they're not. And the James Patterson games aren't the first games to have problems.

A big thank you to Whiterabbit...for so long you've been giving very helpful information and if I stop downloading these offerings, honestly, I'll especially miss your reviews.

Hi MJ, Thank you for your comment. Sadly, it's really difficult to find developers willing to give away thousands of keys for newer games. Before the game giveaway project was started back in Dec 2006 there wasn't much available for free (apart from very old abandonware and freeware games[that were usually created by wannabee game developers]). From the site's inception until the 2008 financial crisis, we were getting decent and often new games daily. Following the crash, these dried up slowly. As other site started their own giveaway projects it became harder to find newer games; then the indie bundles were introduced, where you could purchase upwards of 6 to 10 games for between 90 to 95% off (or more) the usual price. Also, many small developers and even some of the big AAA developers and game studios disappeared, making it even more difficult to get decent newer games. The proliferation of free game sites like MyPlayCity, Jenkat games, and others put more nails in the coffin. Every game downloaded from such sites open up your browser to their web sites. This, in turn, earns the site money, part of which is given to the developers of the games they give away. Developers make more money with older games by giving them away via those free game sites than if they remained totally commercial. Sadly all the above have impacted significantly on the game giveaways offerings. The occasional Steam keys are welcome, but unfortunately, only a few community members each time get those, so the majority of the community miss out.

Whiterabbit,

Thanks so much for your response! :)

Of course you're correct...I do remember back during those times, when games were much more plentiful. It's sad the entire field has been hurt by the financial crisis (and worse, is still hurting). :(

I guess more than anything, the worst part now isn't so much that the games are old - I think that's fine and even enjoy older games - but if they *are* older, they should be the current versions, because a version 2.0 or 1.0 will still have bugs, such as with the aforementioned James Patterson games. Because the bug fixes aren't in the oldest versions of the software, the games can't be completed. At the very least, an older game should be playable to completion. Many of the offerings now simply aren't, due to bugs that were undoubtedly fixed long ago in subsequent updates.

No matter what, though, Whiterabbit, your reviews have always been delightful, enjoyable and spot on. :)

Hi MJ, Thank you again for your kind words. Yes, I agree, they should be the newer versions when and if possible. Monday's game is worth entering. There are 150 keys up for grabs, so the chances of winning a key are pretty good.

This is a good game to relax to. Although it's a time management game, there isn't really a time limit as to how long you take to finish the goals. You can plant as many plants as you feel comfortable handling, which may take you longer to reach the goals but it also makes it easier if you don't have too many plants to take care of. The game adjusts to the skill of the player.

After the first game they came out with Magic Farm: Ultimate Flower, which was just the first game with some tasks removed (mainly the exam) and a new level added. It's like they hadn't finished the game when they first released it.

Unfortunately, the game feels a little unfinished, as if there were suppose to be more goals to achieve and more locations, much like the first version of the first game. It takes long enough to reach that point, but it does feel as if it could have used a couple more locations and maybe more minor tasks.

It's like they had a good game idea but it was never quite completed. It's fun to play but despite add-ons you do get the feeling at the end that it's unfinished.

I would recommend playing the first game first.

As for yesterdays game and the crashing. I put it compatibility mode (Win 7) and everything works fine.

Bryan, I had to go all the way back to Win Vista compatibility to eliminate a runtime error with yesterday's game. Seems to work fine with Vista compatibility mode.
