I'm retiring for the night, I'll continue to moderate in the morning before the giveaway ends. If you do have problems installing the game, please do read the comments just in case someone has posted a fix. Alternatively check out the FAQ's thread HERE. More often than not it's the security software that is blocking the installation due to the Themida code that is used to wrap the giveaway. Try temporarily turning off your security install then turn your security back on or alternatively try rebooting in safe mode with networking. Failing those clean out your internet cache reboot then try again. Other issues can be fixed by going into compatibility mode and making sure you have admin rights plus changing your operating system via compatibility or if it's graphical checking one of the check- boxes in compatibility mode.
tomorrow we have another MPC game then on Monday a Steam key (several thousand keys so it will probably be an instant giveaway until all the keys have been given away.
Thank you to all who have posted feedback; Good night

The size of the download is 661MB, so if you have a slow internet connection it may take longer than usual to download this game. The best time to download is early in the day or late in the giveaway, when not as many community members are downloading. The more members that are downloading at any one time, the slower the download will be due to the bandwidth of the giveaway servers. 639MB of the installed game (659MB) are flash movies. This game has a lot of animated scenes that add to the overall atmosphere of the game, for example the real looking flames in the forge..

Please only post comments about today's game giveaway; other comments either inappropriate, or comments with only one or a few words; for example vg, good, thank you, TY, bad, rubbish, this game is ~%!£*? etc , or if the comment has nothing to do with today's game or is complaining (send your complaints to the giveaway team via the contact form that I've linked to below), they may be deleted at the moderator or administrators discretion; however, a little light banter among community members/friends and with the moderator to keep this a friendly place to visit is acceptable and welcomed. All comments not specifically about today's game giveaway will be judged by the moderator and if deemed inappropriate, will be deleted and usually with no explanation. Please see the moderation policy HERE for details about posting comments. If you are having problems installing the game check the FAQ's thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted; and if for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE

There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers new or fresh ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality? Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish or good may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games. Would 'you' give away thousands of copies of a game (or extra content for a game) away to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only needs a few moments of your time.
This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free instead of complaining about the way this site has changed, for example, they don't like MPC games, they hate HOG's, have had enough of Match Three and Time Management games, or they want to see the latest version of Call of Duty or some other big name AAA game given away or that they don't like Steam games. If something isn't for you then please move on to the next giveaway, or check out the forums HERE, HERE and HERE, where a few members of the community post details of various free games and free game sites as well as links to various indie bundle sites etc; you never know, you may find something that really interests you.

The Game:
Review 1:
Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows sees players trying to solve the long-held mystery surrounding Captain William van der Decken, a famous military man that worked to free the world from pirates, until he was found dead on the Dutch coast in full pirate regalia, including a hook for a hand. His wife Isabelle had vanished some time prior, increasing the mystery. Unfortunately, the story is pretty sparse after the introduction, as we’re only given brief glimpses into the lives of the van der Deckens via short journal entries or paintings scattered about the family’s abandoned castle.
Over time, the game slows down more and more. It lacks traditional cut-scenes, but the narration during dialogue sequences (including a few interactions with ghosts) is excellent. These are few and far in between, however, and you’re simply left to progress by wandering around an abandoned seaside village, and searching through the castle. Hidden object scenes are lacking at the beginning of the game, but increase in frequency and in difficulty over time.
These hidden object scenes are mostly those that ask you to find items on text lists, with a few offering further interactivity in the form of doors or containers that must be opened or moved before finding a key item. There’s also a brief inclusion of silhouette hunts, which challenge players to find items based on shadows, rather than names. It’s a shame that there aren’t more of these kinds of scenes, as the text scenes are artificially inflated for length by asking players to find multiples of a specific object (seven feathers or five horseshoes, as examples).
Ashampoo_Snap_2017.08.25_23h04m08s_037

Ashampoo_Snap_2017.08.25_23h05m16s_039
Outside of hidden object scenes, there’s a great map system that allows for fast travel, as well as providing players with a constant inventory of locations that still contain a task to complete. Coins add another element to the game, with coins being found in bulk in most locations. These too are marked on the map, as coins are perhaps the most important item in the entire game.
While the game initially presents coins as though they might be a voluntary collection system, it’s actually mandatory that players collect them in order to unlock treasure chests throughout the game. These chests contain key items that you must retrieve before moving further on, so it’s unfortunate that many coins are so hard to find.
Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows is an instantly striking hidden object puzzle game that has everything it takes to pull players in. Great voice acting in the initial cut-scenes speaks of a lifelong romance that actually wasn’t: as the wife of a noble captain vanishes, and the captain is found dead on the coast of the ocean. While the game starts off with a bang, it quickly fizzles into a slow moving and ultimately disappointing experience.
Ashampoo_Snap_2017.08.25_23h06m34s_040

Ashampoo_Snap_2017.08.25_23h07m03s_041
While Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows comes with two difficulty options, even the easier of the two comes with a slowly filling hint recharge meter and lack of a permanent in-game cursor. This prevents you from seeing when you’re hovering over a key item, so you can walk all around a building never finding the item that’s been right in front of you the entire time.
Puzzles are handled well in Legacy Tales, even though the majority are those we’ve seen time and time again (jigsaw puzzles, tile rotation/swapping puzzles, and so on). The graphics throughout are especially good here, as the closer an object is to the player, the more detail it has been given. Some legitimately look lifelike, but that sort of appreciation quickly diminishes when you’re left with slow object animations and lagging transitions.
If there’s one word to describe Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows, it’s “slow.” From the slowly recharging hint and skip meters and the unnecessarily lengthy hidden object scenes, to the slow unraveling of the game’s story and secrets, this is one experience that had a ton of potential and did a lot of things right (the map and fast travel system, as examples), but has even more flaws.

Review 2:
The very first thing I noticed when playing Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows was the soothing, realistic sound of waves gently lapping, as if I were standing on a windy dock. That and the background music do a great job of setting the perfect tone for this pirate adventure.
The graphics in Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows are strikingly detailed and beautiful. Unlike other games of the genre, however, the screens took awhile to load. I thought maybe it was my computer but changing the settings or restarting didn't seem to resolve these issues, so the slowness appears to be game-based.
The main characters, William van der Decken and his wife Isabele, lived long ago and are the subject of local folklore. The sea captain and his wife lived in a fairy-tale-like castle located, of course, on a dock. This Captain was a crusader against pirates who wreaked havoc on the townspeople and their fishing boats. The Captain and his wife, were heroes and well loved by the people of the village. Isabelle, the Captain's wife, was always at his side. Legend has it that she slowly took ill, and was seen less and less by the townspeople, until one day, it seemed she disappeared. After her disappearance, the Captain suffered horribly and fell into a deep depression. Finally, he went off on a quest to find her himself and was never heard from again.
Ashampoo_Snap_2017.08.25_23h12m54s_049

Ashampoo_Snap_2017.08.25_23h14m09s_051
Years later, his rotting corpse was found washed up on a beach. He was dressed like a pirate and had a hook in place of his hand. Of course, nobody ever discovered what really happened to the Captain or if his identity was a sham. That is your job to find out! By the time you enter the scene, the castle and ship are in disarray and full of ghosts who are trying to tell you something. Who are you to believe?
If you like the paranormal and the morbid, you will enjoy this game. There are skeletons in cages where their original owners died of hunger and thirst, and rumor has it that Isabelle used to take pity on them and give them water to make their slow deaths more bearable.
The castle has been abandoned for generations, yet, when you, the first live person to enter the grounds since before living memory, look up, you see lights on in the upstairs windows. There are also moving pink and blue lights in many scenes that signal eerie activity, especially in the graveyard!

Conclusion:
Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows is a nice looking hidden object game with excellent voice acting. The story line is rather lacking but the hidden object scenes should appeal to most HOG lovers; they’re not too challenging, nor overbearing. The map is a useful addition to the game, and the puzzles are original. Overall Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows is a decent HOG worth a 7.5 out of 10 from me (I'm not a HOG lover, but have enjoyed playing this one).

Legacy Tales: Mercy of the Gallows

Slow download and a big install, but went smoothly on Win 10 Pro. Know this is late for the party but a busy time.
A HOG from MPC, but I'm going to call this one a movie with a game in it! Nice graphics, but a sometimes distorted gaming experience in a couple sections, although it mostly plays well..as I probably don't need to say at this point, but HOG are not our favs, although this one is pretty fun.
Exquisite detail and a lot of work put in for the different scenes, although some screen changes bog a bit, but are worth the wait.

Does have a nice map which really helps, and a hint system that if you really pay attention to does help.
Definitely check this one out if your into the genre at all!

Loved this game, Pro's: Nice lay out, not too many back tracks. Map allows you to go back into the rooms to collect coins. Nice graphics. Turned off the music but what I heard was themed fine. Hint button worked nicely but no arrows given, you have to read the hint. Cons: not enough game play. I was able to finish within a day. I was hoping for more levels. In all it was a nice way to spend my Saturday. Thank you for the giveaway.

Hi!
The game took very long to downlaod. It opened fairly easy. I had to change the cursor immediately due to a strong drag. The graphics are good and game play so far is easy. One action follows another with a few puzzle games and hidden object games. It is on a par for these games, so far nothing out of the ordinary, but I have not played that long yet. Thank you for another good game and have a great rest of the weekend, Lee

Well, I'm running into the same problem as Terri (Comment #12). I have Kaspersky too. So, I always reboot in Safe Mode w/Networking to download & install the game. Then I rebooted in Normal Mode & attempted to play the game. It opened then closed again. So, I went to the Compatibility Tab and set it to Win XP, SP3 with all 3 checkmarks checked. This time, it wouldn't even open and gave me a message about Trojan.Win32.Generic being Malware....and for about a minute or so, it had a "loop" going with that message, but it stopped after awhile.

There was some other game given away about 4 months ago or so - same sort of situation and my computer worked ultra-slowly until I uninstalled that game....then everything was fine. Oh well. Most games are fine from here but just every now & then.... *sigh* Thanks anyway.

Thank you DelennDax7 (wish that series was still alive and kicking), as always your feedback is appreciated.
The security fix may not be working because you may have other security such as an adware program, or other anti malware program running in the background (just a suggestion).
I had a similar problem last summer; when for several weeks I was unable to install anything from either side of the giveaway project despite thinking I'd turned off all my security. Turns out I'd installed a forgotten security measure (via the giveaway site) that I'd deactivated until I'd decided whether to keep it or not, then totally forgot about. It had somehow reactivated and was blocking everything from the giveaway site, but there was no obvious indication that it was running and becasue I'd forgotten I'd installed it, couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to install any giveaways as I'd never had that problem before. I tried everything I could think of and was considering formatting my operating system disk drive and then reinstalling the O.S. Turns out the The Task Manager listings did gave an indication that the anti malware suite was running , but the file name was just some generic name that was so inconspicuous and lacked any obvious security implications, I missed it when checjking through the listings for any program that may be causing the conflict. It also showed up in the right click context menu when clicking on files, but I had so many other programs listed it always filled the screen and I'd usually have to scroll down to access the lower part of the menu, so never noticed the security program was running. I only found out about it when I contacted Microsoft and got them to check my system (I thought it may have had something to do with the new operating system that I'd installed several weeks previously around the time the issue had started and when I'd had to replace the computers motherboard (my daughter fried it, one of the graphic cards and most of the RAM sticks). The tech guy from Microsoft who helped found the issue in less than a minute. Turning off the security that I didn't know was active solved the issue. I'm not saying you have the same issue, but maybe there is a program running in the background other than your security that is causing the conflict?
Maybe try turning off anything that's not necessary to play the games may shed light on the issue. One way of doing this quickly would be to install the free start up program called Game Booster, which automatically turns off all unnecessary system programs running in the background while you play your games and then automatically switches everything back on when your done; plus you can configure it to turn off non system programs as well (usually most giveaways that end up running in the background). It may be of some help. You can get the program free from the Razer site HERE. Hope this helps?

I really wanted this game and disabled my Kaspersky, restarted pc, d/loaded game, etc. Kaspersky shows there to be a Trojan, PMD:Trojan, Win32.Generic. It will not allow me to play the game even after I d/loaded the game from My Play City. I have been having such a bad time trying to download games from GOTD for the last 9 Mos. Guess I won't be able to use the site anymore. This makes me sad!

Download and install went fine on both Win 7 & 10. Remembered to turn off Norton for the verification process. Good graphics, story line, scripted commentary. Appreciate the slowly read dialogues and the ability to quickly click through them. Finding coins not easy at first but I caught on quickly. Appreciate the map, the way it is marked up and ability to use it to jump to scenes. When hint is clicked the wording should stay present until clicked again for slower readers. I'd say the way you play the game is quite intuitive, which is a big plus in my estimation; all too often the designers make assumptions about your knowledge of how to play the game and that causes a lot of people to give up on it. In all I'd say this is a top rated game. Kudos to you, WR, for selecting it, MPC for offering it and the designers and coders who wrote it!

A very nice HOG game! One option it had that I super appreciated was that you could adjust the brightness level! Perhaps my screen is not as bright as many, for certain my eyes aren't as sharp as they were, but all too often Hidden object scenes come down to trying to click on totally black areas in hopes that I'll stumble across a black bat. :( This game I could set so I never had this problem. Kudos to the game producers! If only others would do the same.

Susan Canera,
if you have Problems see anything on Screen, like me, open Controls of your Graphic Card
Look for Desktop Colors and then change Brightness, Contrast, Gamma so that you can see all the things :)
Do NOT SAVE, just go back to Game and play, if it to Bright it hurts after time, believe me ^^
Sorry for bad english, but hope it will help you in other Games you ♥

Using XP SP3 Game graphics and sounds are good. So far, I am only up to getting inside the castle. Game play to this point is fine. Puzzles are fairly easy, but worthwhile doing. Finding the gold coins can be very difficult. It would be nice to have the hint point them out for you, or to have a strategy guide attached that would show their locations when playing in casual mode.

Thanks for the reviews. Given the generally lackluster content the reviews suggest, length of d/l & install issues mentioned by users, and just me being dulled out on HOGs lately, it's a pass. But nice offer.

I have requested an e-mail link to download the game, but it is not arriving. I checked all of the folders, like 'junk' and so on, but still nothing. I did send a message as WR mentioned, to see if they are working on the issue. I guess I will just keep trying through the day. Looks like a beautiful game.

Hi gervenor

Try going into compatibility mode and changing the display scaling on high DPI settings, also make sure you are running the program as an admin and try changing the operating system (check the run this program in compatibility mode for and from the drop down menu select the operating system directly before the one you are using presently, i.e. if you're using Win 10 select Win 8, or if using Win 8 select Win 7 etc).

Hi Mardel

I don't have to use the email or FB links to download these games becasue logging into the admin account I have gives me instant access to the game files, so I can't figure out how to fix it for you. I suggest you contact the giveaway team via the contact form HERE explaining the issue and include your name and email used. Hopefully they will provide a direct link for you. If I think of anything I'll contact you.

Another failed to launch.
- Turned off AVG
- Windows 10 with 64bit. Everything up to date.

Looks like an awesome game though I'll try to get it directly.
Thanks so much for the site.

Hi Anne

If you have other security running such as Microsoft's Security essentials or an add blocker, they could also be causing the problem. I installed some security a year this Easter that was given away over on the main site then promptly forgot about it. I'd deactivated it, but for some reason, when I had to install a new mother board (after my daughter trashed my computer), that program was reactivated, but I didn't realise and didn't recognize it when opening up Task Manager. I ended up contacting Microsoft becasue I thought it was something to do with reinstalling the operating system (I thought by changing the mother board I would have to reinstall Win 10). They connected to my desktop and found the problem in less than a minute. The security program that had been reactivated was in the context menu when right clicking on files. All I had to do was deactivate it again and I was then able to install giveaways. took me several weeks to get that figured
Failing the above, try clearing out your internet cache then try again. Make sure you have admin rights as well (you can make sure you have admin rights by right clicking the game .exe file and select 'Run as Administrator' Finally, check the FAQ's thread HERE for other possible fixes.

Hi Anne,

Furter to the simply idotic advice offered by GameGiveawayoftheDay about switching off your security software, if you REALLY want to install the game, reboot into Safe Mode and install it that way.

Thank you for your repeat of my advice. I always give alternatives to turning off the security. As the Gamegiveaway team have always checked the files to be downloaded using several different security suites to make sure files are free from malware. After almost 11 years of operations (the game giveaway site opened in early Dec 2006) they have never given away a game infected with malware, so the advice to temporarily turn off security is a quick and easy fix; much faster than rebooting,. That said, I now always offer the advice to reboot in safe mode with networking as well.
There really was no need to be offensive. If you disagree with turning off your security then that's your prerogative, but it could be said in a less sarcastic manner, for example
''personally I don't agree with turning off my security with a brief explanation as to why you disagree''.
The majority of community members who have had issues installing these giveaways usually due to the Themida wrapper activating their security measures do choose to turn off their security with no adverse effects and are then able to get their game installed. Both ways are as effective, though rebooting takes much longer to accomplish.

Hi, Whiterabbit-uk,

I agree with you, sir, that I COULD have expressed my comment in a less sarcastic manner, but I purposely chose not to. The reason being, it IS stupid advice to get people to switch off their security software. It's there for a purpose. It's NOT my fault if Giveawayoftheday.com and Gamegiveawayoftheday.com can't understand that.

Maybe, people should be advised that switching off their security software is AT THEiR OWN risk.

I used to warn community members that they do so at their own risk, but for some reason haven't bothered to say that recently. I will amend any advise I give to include that from now on. :) As for using security, personally I've never ever purchased anti malware apart from some adware program several years ago becasue I was impressed with their free version. I've been surfing the web and downloading from various sites for as many years as I care to admit (basically since the inception of the internet back in the early 90's). I've never suffered a malware attack apart from once about 17 years ago, when I was stupid enough to visit some very risky site and ended up with some adware; thankfully the problem that ensued from that was easily solved. In my opinion it's all about being a sensible surfer and not clicking on links you think are offering the world for nothing. IMO most of these anti-malware companies are just laughing at the community and raking in the cash. The only rule of thumb I try to adhere to is not keeping any important information like bank details on my computer, clearing out the appropriate caches whenever needed.

Hi lg

Please excuse the late reply, didn't see your comment until now.

Max, my computer language is polish, but the "en.json" file is indeed in the game folder .

Oh, forgot to add - changing the language does nothing.

lg, the problem is there's no polish translation. Changing language can help, because I changed to English and everything was fine.
Try reinstall game and after that, change language from Polish to English (or other).

Thanks Master of Reality (any reference to one of Sabbaths early albums. I based the color of my bedroom off the album sleeve way back then. :)

lg,
Sadly, there's no polish translation included with the install. Yet, game detects your system language and tries to set the same language in-game, which results in no text at all, as the file doesn't exist. But, to display the game correctly, you can rename "en.json" to "pl.json" in Language folder inside main game directory. That won't give you polish translation, obviously, but will allow you to play it normally.

In polish:
W folderze Languages (w katalogu głównym gry) zmień nazwę pliku en.json na pl.json (lub utwórz kopię pliku en.json i dopiero zmień jego nazwę).
