If you find games that include depictions of real acts of horror such as firing squads, chemical warfare and beheadings, you may want to avoid this game. It's well constructed mechanically, but real images taken from the German and British Empires prior to and during the second world war and after may be upsetting and in my opinion highly inappropriate for any game.

In Brief:
I was quite surprised when I initially entered Journey Hell. Once past the entrance portal to Hitler's Germany hell, you will see several real images of firing squads and other images taken during the war placed on the entrance to the game as framed pictures. After surviving an easy platform section you'll then be shown more images presented as framed pictures of German chemical weapons used by Saddam Hussain against his own people back in the 1990's. Again these images are highly inappropriate for a game (IMO). I have avoided posting any of those images as I don't want to offend anyone. I realise the second world war ended over 70 years ago, but Saddam's reign of terror is still fairly recent in living memories of many people and horrifying in its extent, but such memories based on fact are very in appropriate in any game (IMO).

The actual game play is well paced and relatively easy, using the standard controls for such a game (see the controls section below). It's well constructed, and if you don't mind the theme, a game even the most novice of gamers would be able to proceed with relative ease. When you approach a long corridor after braving a few platforms and some swinging traps there's a temporary and surprising shift to the game with an almost comedic feel to it; (see the third from last image below). I'll let you discover for yourself what I mean by that. After the cut scene that lasts for about 30 seconds or so the screen goes black, then you are transported back to a new level called ''Welcome to the Hell England'', where, once you've passed the portal at the start of the level you are shown harrowing images that the British Empire were responsible for, this incudes a British soldier holding the severed head of an Asian Indian as well as starving Biafran people.(I was in my mid-teens in the early seventies and applied to work as an aid worker to help but wasn't considered too young and under qualified at the time). I can still remember the harrowing images of starving children from the awful time, where kids were scraping the waste bins from behind a hotel in the city trying to get some substance. It still brings tears to my eyes when I think of those times. England finally gave independence to Nigeria, the country responsible in the early 70's.

The graphic are low poly, but very effective at giving an atmosphere to the game; the addition of the real images presented as wall art adds to the atmosphere and for me was very melancholic and sad. Audio is also very effective at adding to the overall ambiance of the games theme, with screams from those in hell and a soundtrack that fits in as well.

I only played the first two levels so cannot say whether there are more. If you fall into the lava or get hit by one of the swinging traps or the slicing swords, you start from the beginning of the level. When restarting the game, you can select to play a new game or continue where you left off. It will always take you to the beginning of the level you left.

The games story line goes as follows:

''After decades of being buried in hell, Mr Hitler takes a few days off from hells officials to visit other parts of hell.''

The games premise is possibly inspired by John Bunyan's book that was made into a movie called Journey to Hell. You can see a short video of game play HERE

Hi everyone. I hope all of you are doing well. I have been on the mend lately as my body has not been feeling well. It's not COVID but just major aches and pains. If it continues I may contact a doctor.

On today's game, the subject matter is very inappropriate in my opinion. There is room for shock value but it should not be at the expense of sensitive subjects such as Hitler.

My Grandma is from Germany and I can tell you if she still were alive, she would have a fit over this game. It's terrible. I hope GGOTD can learn from today's offering and not serve up a game that can be sensitive to many members of the giveaway community.

Dawkinsdog, Yes to all your points. As Shigeru Miyamoto and his team at Nintendo were hard at work on Super Mario 64 for the N64, Core Design, based in Britain, was taking the concept of three-dimensional platforming in a very different direction. Tomb Raider introduced the world to Lara Croft, one of the industry’s most celebrated characters and the visuals and 3rd person perspective were quite amazing for its release in 1996 on PS1/PC/Saturn. I'd say the visuals here are pleasantly close to that and others in that era along with doom/quake and although dated still are fun to play from that time period. At the time, Tomb Raider caused quite a fuss (as did DOOM), due to it's ground-breaking style and use of a strong female lead character and here is where this game is going to potentially turn off some people with the choice of main character, as well as usage of the real photos of real acts of horror on the walls that will otherwise never try it (at least they didnt go with video). Of course its intended to be very over the top, tongue in cheek to draw you in to play, I mean there is burning screaming people in cages and has some humor like the dancing. If humor is the goal I would try some other efforts for that - a giant photo of hitler with humanitarian of the year award in the beginning. However I would agree that the platformer is actually decent as well and would be recommended to play if the idea of playing hitler in hell doesnt immediately turn you off. It should be noted the mouse moves the camera in order to see better for platforming and moving and its needed for example in level 3 (Welcome to the hell United States) where there is some misdirection of where to go (HINT). It is what it is, one good thing about indie games is that you might get something that otherwise would never be made...in this case its questionable whether that was good or bad but the gameplay isnt bad :) Heres another video of a later level gameplay: https://vimeo.com/784331309

Nan, try using microsoft powertoys since its regularly updated currently and free, but there are a few other keyboard remappers I'm aware of also I havent had time to also try that can remap keys when a game or program cant and you wish to. I agree that sometimes a key layout is hard to use, probably one of the most common things that ruin a game for some. I also need to separately find a better joystick to keyboard remapper when I have time as games like this would be more easily played imo with a controller since you have to press multi keys such as q plus a direction to roll in that direction. https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/work-life/how-to-remap-keys-using-keyboard-manager-in-microsofts-powertoys/

Forgot to mention you can also buy a gaming mouse, I have an older one called Sensei 310 that came with steelsteries engine software that allowed for remapping, such as in this game I could actually put the spacebar to jump on the left mouse button and right shift for the right button to run etc and play it pretty well that way also vs the more difficult to use controls for future ideas.

I installed this one out of some morbid curiosity but I have to agree with Whiterabbit-uk, the subject matter and especially the imagery are wholly inappropriate for a game of this nature.

I'm not sure what I find more disturbing, the use of photos of actual atrocities, the fact Hitler sounds like Mario when he jumps, or the scene of him in a club, onstage and dancing behind a microphone, between two burning soldiers. I feel almost compelled to play through the entire game to see just how much worse the choices made by the developer could have become.

On a technical level it's actually a decent platformer, it's a shame the developer chose such a distasteful way in which to depict the subject matter to demonstrate their skills, though I look forward to their next one, which will probably be a quite accomplished racing sim but featuring Princess Di and Richard Hammond!
