I started a review for Jewel Quest Mysteries a couple of weeks ago, so will post what I'd prepared, but as I'm staying at my sisters this weekend (my uncles funeral was yesterday and my brothers partners funeral is on Monday), it's not complete and I won't be moderating today and won't be posting anything for tomorrows game or Mondays, though once I return home I will post something for Mondays game because it will be live for several days. Mondays game is a limited Steam key giveaway on (50 keys). It's a $19.99/£14.99 game and has very positive reviews on Steam. I've already played the game for over 9 hours when I first purchased the game last year, and can recommend it highly, but I can't tell you what it is. For those who don't mind Steam games, check the site out on Monday for that competition, which will run all week.

Congratulations to those who won keys for 12 is Better than 6. It's an excellent top down shooter, with good reviews, so I'm sure you are all going to be very pleased. Also a big thanks to Mavadelo for posting the reviews since last weekend, much appreciated and another Steam key award in appreciation. I agree with the score you gave The Last Hope, though I would have probably given it a little more, considering the price of the game is less than a cup of coffee and despite the very negative reviews on Steam; I'm sure there will be those who do enjoy playing it (e.g. the developer)

Edited and amended reference accessed HERE. 29th March 2017

Installation:

Jewel Quest Mysteries: Trail of the Midnight Heart downloads to a 293 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Jewel Quest Mysteries - Trail of the Midnight Heart

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

The Game:

After successfully recovering jewels from Egypt in the first game (Jewel Quest Mysteries: Curse of the Emerald), adventurer Eva Witheby heeds her uncle’s call to visit Southeast Asia to solve a new mystery. If we’re being vague, that’s because you should read Eva’s handwritten notes in her journal to soak up the story and atmosphere rather than having us spoil the fun for you!

Suffice it to say, there will be a lot of object hunting going on, spread out between roughly 20 locations including India, China, Thailand and Australia. The core game-play will be familiar to fans of this genre: you’re presented with an indoor or outdoor scene, and will see a list of well-hidden items you need to find in the environment. When you click on the item, such as a pitchfork, the word "pitchfork" is then crossed off the list. Only after you find all the items do you move onto the next scene.

One of my pet peeves in HOG games is when the items have nothing to do with the location, and Jewel Quest Mysteries 2 is no exception: you’ll click on a basketball net in a dark tomb, a coat rack in a garden, a mailbox in a tree and my personal favorite, an omelette outside of the Taj Mahal. Sigh. Perhaps I ought to let this go, but I feel it hurts the suspension of disbelief in a story-driven game.

Also hidden in each world are gems you can collect (which can be used as currency to buy power-ups, such as an extra hint), gold coins (which go towards your overall score) and ways to uncover shards that let you play a Match 3 mini-game (we’ll get to that in a moment). You can uncover shards by finding a hummingbird in the environment, who will be carrying a piece of these game boards, and you can also use the correct item in your inventory to find these items, too (such as a shovel on sand to dig up the treasure, or a crowbar against a locked chest).

You’ll have a limited amount of time to complete each puzzle, too, and if you click incorrectly three times you’ll be penalized with 30 seconds off the clock. One of the power-ups you can purchase, though, is to freeze the clock for a minute — but it’ll cost you eight jewels.

Every few levels, gamers will be treated to a "scrolling" HOG exercise: while in a plane, on a boat or in a train, you’ll have a limited amount of time to find and click 20 items as you glide from left to right. For example, you might have to locate 20 bird feathers while looking outside of your airplane window, which might be cleverly attached to a cloud or mountain. This proves to be a unique and fun HOG twist.

As with last year’s game, the shards you collect make up a game board in which you can play a Match-3 game (not unlike Bejeweled). Use your mouse to swap adjacent jewels and other items to create a row or column of at least three of the same. Doing so will cause them to disappear and new pieces will cascade down the board, and you’ll continue your task until all the stones on the board (which are behind the jewel) have turned to gold. Each time you play the mini-game the board will be a different shape.

There isn’t much to complain about with this game, but I found you visit the same locations too often and the items are in the same place each time. Therefore, you might not need to click the pretzel right now but when you return there in a few minutes, and if the pretzel is on your list, you’ll likely remember where it is immediately. Another issue if there’s only one game mode. Too bad you just couldn’t play the Match 3 minigame, for example.

Jewel Quest Mysteries 2: Trail of the Midnight is one of those games that’ll likely please more players than disappoint them, but at the same time it’s not one of the best HOGs available this summer. Download the demo to see what you think before dropping cash on the full game.

You can see some videos of game play HERE, HERE and HERE. You can see a walkthrough of Jewel Quest Mysteries: Trail of the Midnight Heart HERE and a slideshow of almost 40 images HERE.

Conclusion:
Solid HOG with lots to do. Match-3 mini-game. "Moving" HOG puzzles. Can use found items in scene. Power-ups. Negatives include items are in the same place each time you visit the same scenes which in this game is quite often. Plus it's only got one game mode. If you've played the first in the series you'll find this very similar.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Jewel Quest Mysteries: Trail of the Midnight Heart, the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, and my sister for letting me HOG her only computer for the last hour and a bit. I'll be back as nornmal next weekend. :)

Hi,

The game took awhile to download and opened quickly. It looked typical of hogs etc. Have only played a few levels so far, but I like it. Not totally sure why yet. It can be difficult to find the items, sort of a blur and small, but able to find all and or use the one hint. It says its timed, but have had plenty of time thus far. I think I like the two games, first hog, then matching. Not sure if more to it. The story is typical, but have not gone that far to tell. As far as can see its a story to keep playing levels until you discover whys and wherefores!
Thank you for another great game!!

Also, I did download one last week and hadn't time to play, not sure if can go back in and review.

and, wanted to say how sorry I am for your losses last week, WhiteRabbit! Condolences to you and your family.

I have tried installing this 3 times (downloaded twice). I get an unknown error asking me to send error message to Microsoft. This is a Win 7 computer and have not had any problems with other Play CIty games.

caretta, It may be your security software blocking the installation, try white-listing the giveaway files with your security, or reboot the computer in safe mode with networking or temporarily turn off your security software, then try to install the game.

Clyda Dearborn, Check to see if your computers clock is set correctly. If you've had your computer for a long time, the motherboard battery (a button cell) may be drained. The computers clock relies on that battery to work.

Jewel Quest Mysteries: Trail of the Midnight Heart
A MPC HOG game that is another one in the series, downloaded and installed well on Win 10 Pro x64 like usual from MPC :) As HOG's are not my usual genre these comments mostly come from my daughter, who is the pro when it comes to them, and she stated that it plays pretty well, but many items that you need to find don't make sense to the storyline, although she did like the Match 3 games that you encounter in the game.
Nice scenery and graphics, but overall didn't capture her interest like some of the genre, and I don't know if we'll keep this over time, although will keep it around to see how she likes it when she plays it again ;)
But fans of HOG games should definitely check this out, as the thoughts above are only our impression of it.
A big thank you as always to GGAOTD and MPC for these games!

And a note to WR that our prayers are with you on these emotional and trying days, may you and your family have peace and comfort at this time.

I would really like to play this game but once more, it cannot be installed due to corrupted setup files. I have lost out on multiple giveaways for the past several months due to corrupted installation files. I have even disabled my security software and downloaded the programs in Safe Mode with networking: same problem. GOTD-what gives? Needless to say I am really miffed and this problem needs to be addressed immediately. I am losing out on things I would like to have through no fault of my own. And FYI, I have never had this problem with similar sites such as Shareware on Sale.

Reply   |   Comment by SWarner  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

SWarner, It's probably an issue with the security wrapper vs. your computer (as SharewareOnSale and other free sites do not use the security wrapper that the giveaway site does). Thousands of community members are able to install these games with no problems, so it isn't a problem with the actual files you are downloading. Every ones computer will be set up slightly differently due to each individuals taste in programs they install. There is likely another program that is conflicting with the giveaway installation file. Immediately after trying to install check the event logs to see if there are any 'understandable' error messages that may give a clue to the problem. You could try turning off individual background programs to see if they are the cause of the issue. If you also run an ad-blocker that could be the issue becasue MPC games do have adware included, though they are usually disabled in the giveaway site apart from the phone home when you close a game down plus the initial ad for an online game while the game is booting up..

Downloaded ,Installed/Activated with no problems on my Win10x64 machine using Edge as my browser. Not my favorite type of game but its well worth it if it is your type. Beautiful graphics. Only played the first level so my review will be short, but I assume the rest of the game is similar to what I've seen so far. As mentioned there's no relaxed mode, at least that I can find anyway. Some of the hidden objects are quite hard to find, at least for me. In my opinion the object you're looking for shouldn't be exactly the same color as the background you're looking for it on. Some contrast , even a little would be helpful. Of course , maybe my old eyes are to blame.

My Play City has some excellent games but you need to pay attention when downloading/installing. Uncheck the boxes so your browser won't be changed etc. Hey MyPlayCity ....... Mega World Smash!!! For inexpensive games of these types MyPlayCity is now my "go to" site anymore. I have bitten the bullet and gotten a Steam account as well as a GOG account. Well HAD to get a GOG account when I bought The Witcher 3, but these places are NOT as bad as I once thought, and you can get some nice games for very little money if you keep your eyes open. No I'm not shilling for these sites either, just my opinion.

Anyway, if HOG's are your thing you could do a lot worse than todays offering. No real feedback for the developer other than maybe a tad more contrast in some of the screens/objects.

I only played the game for 45 minutes or so, but I enjoyed it. The objects aren't impossible to find and there are coins and jewels to find that enable the purchase of power-ups and points. So far it's not very difficult, which is good for me, but I assume it will get harder as levels proceed.

Great game--thanks again GGOTD team!

Was happy to see what looked like a good HOG/Adventure game (my favorite genre) combined with Match 3 (also a fave), and downloaded (albeit slow for so early in the morning) and installed fine on Win 8.1. Was distressed to see it open in a non-full screen format, so checked the Options to make sure 'fullscreen' was selected (it was). VERY disappointed, as the playing field is WAY too small (and I'm not on a huge resolution for modern monitors---1980x1080). In this day and age, how can they release a game that can't be played at fullscreen on normal resolutions?

No real story, just frequent HOGs interspersed with Match 3s. No other puzzles that I can tell so far. The Match 3s don't even let you drag, so have to click to swap which takes extra time.

While I would still give a HOG with Match 3s a basically thumbs up, the inability to play full screen, coupled with the aforementioned difficulty of seeing items in the HOGs anyway, makes this one more annoying than pleasurable so far. Will play it through if I get bored (something's better than nothing :)), but not gonna be a fave.

After Jewel Quest (7 Match 3 titles) Jewel Quest Solitaire (3 Match 3 / Solitaire cards combination) iWin decided they took Jewel Quest into the realm of the HoG. Of course again combined with the Match 3 objectives. This is the second title in a series of 4. Jewel quest fans can also find their Jewel Quest fix on Mobile (5 titles) and Consoles (1 XBOX360, 1 Wii and 4 DS titles)

The game has no relaxed mode. Download and install went quickly on my Win 10 64bit.
You will have a set amount of time to do a few levels of Hidden Object to collect board pieces for the Match 3 objectives. Game started out with 16 minutes for 2 different levels. When you miss click 3 times in a row 30 seconds will be deducted off your time. When time is up it is game over. No continue from last point until the Match 3 level is done. Throughout the levels hidden gems and gold coins can be found for extra hints and help. Tools are also laying around and can be used to uncover gems and board pieces.

Items can be hard to find, especially for those with high resolutions. Many similar colors can cause items to blend a bit to much with the background. The limited amount of hints can make finding everything in time a challenge.

The story is there as a vehicle to move along the levels, the same yadayada as in most of these games. Something and/or someone has gone lost, we need to discover what happened.

Graphics are of the usual Jewel Quest standard. Bright and colorful but sometimes things blend too much with the background.
Sound: Also familiar to those who play the jewel quest games. "jungle music" that is interesting for five minutes after which it best can be switched off and replaced by your favorite tunes from your own library

Compared to other Jewel Quest games this is perfect in line with one can expect from this franchise, 8/10

I love HOGs, but not too sure about this one. The objects can be quite hard to find as the pictures are rather indistinct, and sometimes when you click on one slightly on the edge it will give you a time penalty, which is irritating. I dislike timed games anyway - and this one does not have the option to turn off the timer and play in a relaxed mode. So it's not one of my favourites, but still useful to pass a bit of spare time. Thanks GGOTD.

I download and install the game but I get third-party advertising and browser add-ons!. You tell that it isn't but I notice before that my play city
install game with the advertising and so on.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hello Fea

My sister has let me install the game on her computer (I'm away from home at the moment) and as with all MyPlayCity (MPC) games that we have been given here, the initial window that usually shows three check-boxes (if you downloaded the game directly from MPC) has been disable and no browser add-ons were added. I don't know how they could have been added to your browser if you installed directly from the giveaway version becasue they have been removed. Have you installed any games directly from MyPlayCity recently? That could explain why you have add-ons. As for the advertising, it only shows at the beginning when the game is installing and is totally innocuous, plus, when you close any MyPlayCity game down your browser is opened to the MyPlayCity home page. The reason for this is that MPC earn cash whenever your browser is opened to the MPC home page, part of which is paid to the developer of the game you have installed. Add=ons are easily removed from your browser. Though each browser does have slightly different ways of doing it. you should find details of how to remove add-ons HERE
