Passing only due to dialup download time. Looks like a nice game though, so darn. :) lol

Whiterabbit, I also look for your comments & it feels way odd to download if you haven't posted yet! :) We all value you a LOT here! Get well soon!

Hi Bovi, thanks for the links; I’ve just downloaded both games and will try them once the kids are in bed. :) The size of both games are an order of magnitude smaller than today’s giveaway (Boulder Match 48.4Mb versus Supaplex’s 802Kb) and Although the Igor game (5.52Mb) is 'only' a demo, the demo is probably the largest one I’ve come across; with 11 practice levels and another 89 free levels. Also it says that some of the free downloadable levels (community made) may work with the demo version of the game. I'd say any game with 100 levels is just about a full version, :D

I’ve reposted the download links for the Supaplex game together with a spin off called Winplex as I found the one you posted didn’t work for me:

Winplex (Supaplex rebirth in XXI Century)

Granted (that sounds a little pompous lol) today’s giveaway does have a limited viewing area, but I personally think it adds to the difficulty in playing the game. I know having to back track because you've gone down a blind alley may be frustratingly annoying, but in my opinion, these maze like games should be like that.

Ngaire's suggestion regarding magnification is a good one; also with respect to changing the music. You can easily access the music files because Magnussoft has dumped everything into one file instead of keeping data files and music files in their own files. Just search out the music you want to change and replace it with whatever you think will be suitable or what you want to listen to. You will need to convert whatever you choose to the wave format and rename it to the same name as the music you’re playing. Check out the freeware library under audio for a converter that will work.

The kids are finally settled in bed so I managed to check out the games Bovi recommended, and found them both playable. I think Igor is really cool. Despite it being a demo, I love it already and may purchase the full version; but will play through some more of the 100 levels the developer has given away first before I commit myself :) Have you seen some of the level sets; Wow is all I can say about that. The graphics are cool and almost as good as Jack’s Boulder Match and Alawar’s Beetle Ju which I mention below.

Alawar also do a boulder dash clone called Beetle-Ju, which has pleasant graphics and is very playable.

From the options menu there is an ‘option’ to add custom levels to the game, unfortunately, after a reasonably extensive search of the web, including Magnussofts home page I was unable to find the level creator. If anyone does find it I would be most grateful if you could post details in the forums. Thanks.

Again I must thank all those who have voiced support for my amateurish attempts at reviewing; although I ask for nothing in return, it is always a pleasure to read such comments as they do make the whole process worth doing.

Sorry about the lack of a full review today. Hopefully I’ll be much more able tomorrow.

Check out my freeware games post that I posted in the forums earlier today. All the games on the list have been tested by me with full security turned on, and are clear from any malware.

48 meg isn't big. Now my Tomb Raider weighing in at 9.8GB, now that's big. I think people need to get some more memory here, it seems a lot of them are lacking space?

Nice Game!

I don't download anything until I read Whiterabbit's review. I am capable of making up my own mind but his reviews are always well worth reading.

So sorry, I misread, the Igor game is not free, it's only a free demo. Supaplex is free though!

I don't get it. How can Magnussoft manage to collect all the games that have useless controls, and none of the good ones, and still survive as a company? This offer joins the rest of the ones from Magnussoft in being inferior to lots of other games of the genre, even the original ones from more than a decade ago, and the clones of nearly the same age.

The main problems with this one is the short visibility, especially coupled with the hopeless scrolling of the view that only happens when you're completely at the edge of what you currently see. Objects fall nearly instantaneously.

Steer well clear of this one. Thumbs down, way down.

If you want a good game of the type, look no further than the ages-old Supaplex, for free any day, with gazillions of challenging levels needing both thinking and action prowess to complete. The same site mentions another game of the same type that is also always free, Igor. I have not tried that one.

I have been downloading from GAOTD since day one. Both programs and games. And I have to tell you most of the games I choose to keep are for my four yr old. So the first thing I do is read your review. I like that you comment on what age group will most likely appreciate that particular game. Your comments are insightful, educated and most of the time dead on. So just a few lines to let you know that after reading your reviews everyday we know sometimes its not easy for you to get up in the morning----but you are appreciated.....

I too agree with #5

And at #1: A game being a clone is not a bad thing. Its better to have a good clone of a good game than a bad original game. There are plenty examples of this.

I just happened upon this website a few days ago, and already I find myself looking for for whiterabbit's reviews. With slow dial up connections, it can take 2-3 hours to download a game. No need wasting my time if it's a crappy game. Thanks whiterabbit!

Can we have a break from the arcade games for at least a day or two, especially the kiddie oriented ones. I don't want to sound ungrateful, but they're not my bag. How 'bout a nice adventure or "who done it"?

Thanks for the freebies!!! :)

I totally agree with #5's comments! Every day I find myself checking the comments and looking for Stephen's (Whiterabbit) review before I even think about downloading anything!

Thanks for all your input and efforts! It's much appreciated!

Unknown error occurs at start of my game, a pop up box appears and if you choose ‘options’ the game partially closes down.

Game-play is otherwise acceptable, with fairly good graphics; however the limited screen view that I have and lack of map is annoying. I am also playing without knowing all the game-play instructions. This may be able to be fixed in the ‘options’ menu, however the game suffers a fatal error if I try to access.

I love the theme, though done before it is one that i believe is now 'classic'; and love the need for ‘keys’. You might want to give the keys a bit more 'punch' in game play. The graphics are very good, I believe that when working, this game will be well liked by people aged 8 - 80 years old.

A choice of magnification of the game-play area and a choice of background music would be appreciated. Again this may be able to be done through the ‘options’ menu.

I am going to try to download again to see if this fixes the error.

Hi Kalmanizer,
I write the reviews because I enjoy writing them. Playing games is about all I do well these days, so I thought why not write about then too. Thank you for your kind words. I only wish I could write a better review.

As for writing reviews of applications. I think The Bladed Thoth does a fabulous job of it. I doubt I'd enjoy writing reviews of the applications simply because I don't download most of the software over there apart from the odd gem suich as MagicScore, screensavers and a few other unusual programs such as wire changer.

A physiotherapist is someone who helps someone who is recovering from a physical disability, usually (but not always) caused by an accident.

@ Whiterabbit

I want to thank you for your reviews on each game I REALLY appreciate it. You do a GREAT job. :-)

Outta curiosity Whiterabbit is it your job to review each game or do you just do it because you enjoy writing a review on each game? I was just wondering because I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to put your two sense in on each game that GAOTD lists.

Also Whiterabbit did you ever consider writing reviews on the programs that GAOTD lists each day besides the review for games that you constantly comment on?

Thanks once again Whiterabbit and I am not exactly sure what physiotherapists is but I hope you get well quick. :) :-) :)

Another Magnussoft game with a larger than normal size ‘for an arcade game’, weighing in at 48.4Mb. (of course it’s not massive by the standards of most graphically intensive games we can buy today. {eg America’s Army is over 2Gb in size and is actually a brilliant ‘free’ multiplayer game}, but for someone on dial up it is far to massive to even contemplate downloading. Most of today’s game is as usual taken up by AVI, images and sound files. I do like some of the music though.

Unfortunately I’m unable to take any screen captures because this game crashes whenever I use my screen capture device; (as does all Magnussoft games). So for an idea as to what the game looks like please follow the link below. As with most of Magnussoft’s games despite it being given a number 3, I see no sign of a version 1 or 2 and there are not many images available:

http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=Jacks+Bouldermatch&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

I will be taking a leaf out of Brian aka Crashes books today and just posting a quick /brief review:

First impressions:

This looks like a really well made version of that time honored game boulder dash, with excellent graphics and easy game play. The music certainly adds some tempo to the game. And I had no problems playing it.

There really is no need for me to describe such a classic game, and I have to give it 7 out of 10 because it’s the best version of this game I’ve seen to date. Although I haven’t done an extensive search.

Check out the originals gallery of images. That should bring back memories to those commodore users of old, lol:

http://gotcha.classicgaming.gamespy.com/gallery/image91.htm

The game seems to run okay on my system. The only negative point I have to make (and then it’s hardly a big problem) is that the menus are mixed up again. That is they are part in German and part in English which is another common problem with Magnussoft games. However this in no way detracts from the actual game play.

My kids will love this one. Watch out for the boulders folks

Thank you Magnussoft and the game giveaway team for another game. Have an excellent day folks. :)

I may add a more extensive review in the forums later today, or tomorrow. It depends upon how quick I get over the physiotherapists cruelty today, lol.
