When I first checked out today's game, and then saw all the negative comments, I was even more curious to see what the game was like, so I downloaded it and I'm so glad that I did. Never was I one to get discouraged by what others think, nor get influenced by some positive reaction, although the latter has the most effect on people, who quite often think that if so many people gave it thumbs up, and even more commented on the software in admiration, then it must be good. And often is, but then comes personal preference and different tastes and quirks and moods everybody must have. I prefer RPG games and puzzle, adventure and quests, but will try other genres out of curiosity, for relaxation or new gaming experience. Have been playing this game for the past 2 hrs and really enjoing the challenge, since not all the words are accepted, neither some easy nor well known, and I really had to exercise my brain to come up with yet another approach. I don't like easy games so this one is up to par for me. English is not my first language, and I dont't think in english, so I always appreciate the effort software developers have to go through, especially if english is not their first language either. Thank you DoubleGames and thank you Giveaway of the Day Team! I come here every day to check your site for game and program, and see if maybe will happen again upon a treasure :-)

The kiddies don't love it and neither do I. My 12 year old grandson rapidly became frustrated when he found over half the valid words he tried were not accepted by the game. While "sit" was accepted "set" was not, etc. For game play to be enjoyable the dictionary/word list should include all English language words in an elementary school dictionary. This game really struck out. I did a quick search and found quite a few similar games from other sources that used far more extensive word lists and still were free. Maybe next time I'll get a "keeper" but this game is already uninstalled.

The kiddies don't love it and neither do I. My 12 year old grandson was immediately frustrated since over half the valid words he tried to input were not accepted by the game. At a minimum the word list needs to be expanded to include all valid English language words for the game to be enjoyable.

To begin with the instructions are incomplete. They do should be continued but when pressing on the arrow, it takes you to the main game menu. The suggest button does not work. Thirdly the dictionary that the game is based on is incomplete, missing simple words like vent and wag. The threory is great for a game and my son loved it until he couldn't make the game take the words. That ended the play for him. It's very frustrating but with some work will be a great game for kids.

Disney certainly is pro active on copyright. I worked on a children’s eye ward in Manchester UK, and was appalled when we were ordered to remove poster prints of Disney Characters from the walls because of this pro active stance. Appalling I say.
As for the Cheshire cat, why should Disney make any more money from something that wasn't their idea anyway. Crazy World I say.

As for this game. Yeah it has need of a lot of work before it could be called an excellent word game. I do hope the developer will give it some more thought as it has a lot of potential. It’s very colourful and an interesting take on word games. I will be keeping it because my children found it entertaining. It seems to have been specifically aimed at children, so I do forgive the dictionary. I did look to see if it was possible to add to the games database, but haven't figured out how to edit it yet. I'm hoping I will succeed just for my children because it definitely stimulated them earlier today despite its shortcomings. I'll post in the forums if I manage to sort a fix.

I give it 7 out of 10 for playability, 5 out of 10 for a poor dictionary. (I was going to give it 4, but my children didn't find the lack of words a problem). Clicking on the hints button gave them some idea as to what words they should be looking for. All in all a decent game.

Thank you

Thank you DoubleGames and the GGAotD for providing these games. Please ignore the ungrateful comments such as ........ well I wont pursue that as everyone is entitled to comment in the way they feel is necessary, and I do agree that there are a lot of good constructive criticism’s here today. I agree with Swan's sentiments regarding recommendations. :) Still there are some very ungrateful people inhabiting this cyber world...... But then I think there are a lot more 'unspoken', grateful ones. :) Peace to all and have a happy bank holiday in the UK.

Check out the image of the cheshire cat with jewels, one of the limited edition 'Spotlight' pins released in 2006. The original pin, minus jewels, was sold during the 1980's.

http://www.dizpins.com/archives/2006/2006october_4.htm

After taking their cheshire cat image and morphing it over the Walt Disney image, I found a match, from the curve of the cat's tail to the tip of its whiskers and matched all the little wrinkles in between. The only differences are a small line on the lower lip and placement of the cat's irises (Disney has the eyes closer to the nose, and lower).

The problem is that every other game out there doesn't frustrate the player by saying "that is not a word" to a combination of letters that CLEARLY IS A WORD. As you say, you're new to computer word games, so you've not experienced some of the better implementations out there that stretch your imagination when you play them, and don't surprise you with a limited dictionary and a roll of the dice as to whether a word you select will be accepted.

You might wish to a couple of the other ones like those mentioned in post #40 to see what most players in this genre are used to, and what drives some of the above complaints. Some, like Bookworm, are really quite fun.

Cheers. :)

The broken English prevalent in all the games I've seen from DoubleGames has been amusing at times, and annoying at others. But in this particular game it completely defeats its own purpose. Adults won't want to bother with it, and young children could actually be "dumbed down" by being told that words they thought were familiar are not words at all.
I realize not everyone speaks English, but if a software developer plans on creating a word game with any educational value (or one just for fun), they should do so using a language they are familiar with.
GOTD is an enjoyable part of my daily routine even if I don't want to keep what's being offered. But this game is bad news, let's face it.

I love word games and this is the first one I've installed on my computer. I see all the complaints about words not being accepted, but I accepted that this is the way the game plays, and I think it's fine. To complete a level it is necessary to identify SPECIFIC words, not all the possible ones or any random sampling you happen to come up with. What's the problem? When one plays "hangman", one must find the correct word, not just any one that fits. Just accept the rules and play by them. By rejecting words, this game prolongs the play and forces you to work harder. Again, what's the problem? It's all about mental exercise, so the harder the better. I also prefer this untimed version. I like to be able to work on a puzzle as long as it takes to complete it without being penalized for taking a break. I think this is a superb game for word-game fans and encourage all to try it. Don't freak out when one of your legitimate words is rejected, just look for another. Thanx GGAOTD and DoubleGames.

Mystery (19) the issue isn't that the Cheshire Cat is copywritten (as it isn't, anymore), BUT, the image they are using is Disney's drawing of the Cheshire cat, and they use it repeatedly in different poses on the promo pic and in the game. That is absolutely copywritten, and GGotD really should pull this game immediately, as distributing a game that has a copyright violation in it against Disney (who are very pro-active on this defense) is asking for trouble.

Good morning everyone,

As somewhat of a word-smith - (loved today's other software give away today!) like others, I would become all too frustrated with the lack of available words in the game. Thank you to all those that mentioned this major problem - and yes, it IS a major problem when the game is a WORD game.

Here are some other excellent word games for those who love them:

Bookworm Deluxe;
Bookworm Deluxe Adventures;
Wordslinger;
Word Mojo Deluxe;
Typer Shark Deluxe;
Babel Deluxe;
Super Text Twist;
Word Spiral.

I regularly play all of these, with Bookworm, Babel and Wordslinger being my absolute favorite word games to date - the others I tend to play less frequently - and ALL of the above games have excellent dictionaries.

I'm always on the lookout for great word and puzzle games, so it would be great to see other word and puzzle games suggested.

I think you've let yourself down with this game Double Games - unless you include a more comprehensive dictionary. Perhaps we can have it offered at again at some time in the future - IF that happens.

However, I do thank you for sticking with us, it can't be easy reading some of the ungrateful comments that appear. I hope we see more of your games on offer soon - according to your website, you have far better games than what's been offered so far.

If you want us to recommend your games to other people, then we need to evaluate your better games like; the "Mystery Case Files" games, "Virtual Villagers" 1 and 2, "Wildlife Tycoon" and the "Law and Order" games.

Thanks GOTD, today's game isn't for me and I'll check back tomorrow ;)

I have some genuine comments to the game contributor. After the hassel free to installed and play the game. The Pro is that I like the 'no time limit pressure'. But the biggest con is that, the vocab quantity should be improve as it don't even 'accept' the word 'REST'. So I will only give 3/10 for this game. I uninstall anyway. Thank GOTD for today free game still.

Maybe all of the constructive comments will enable the game publisher to go back and make some really good corrections and offer this again at a later time. At this time I believe I will pass as my children are in the 1st & 2nd grade and I don't want to frustrate their learning process with a game that doesn't accept the small words they already know. Thanks everyone for helping me make my decision easier and for GOTD for providing the opportunity for us all to try it as well as the publisher to learn from it. Thanks

This is my first feedback. I am fairly easy to please, but after attempting to play this game, and having approximately 50% of standard words not recognized by the game as valid words, I deleted it. I have to say it sucked royally. I'm talking dead easy words like pal, ale, pray etc.

My constructive criticism to Double Games is that this game reflects bad on their other products and instead of helping them sell more, it may work in the opposite direction. They should upgrade this software and let the ones that still haven't deleted this version from their computer, update it for free, so that they get some good comments and redeem themselves. I agree with most of the comments about the program not accepting common known words, which is very frustrating. I'll keep it installed for about a month to wait for a free update for its dictionary, and if that doesn't happen I'll just delete it - there is always the chance that sometime in the future, GGOTD will give away a good word game, like Key Words, which I did not have a chance to get, because at that time I wasn't aware of this website. Everyone should keep in mind that GGOTD is not responsible for the quality of the games it is giving away, and therefore we should be thankful to them for their generosity, and if we don't like a specific game, offer constructive criticism to the developer so they can better their product, but don't "shoot the messenger". Have a great day and remember- there is always tomorrow and the possibility of getting a quality and exciting game.

Mike

I was very excited when I saw this offered. I love word games. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work right. It would accept up to about 4 words and then just stop accepting any more. It would accept pit and stop but would not accept sit or pot. ??? I even tried suggesting to no avail. I think maybe it still needs some bugs worked out. I liked the idea of the hints. Those did seem to work ok and would be great for younger children playing.

Looks like it would be a really fun educational game, once the problems are worked out.

Thanks GAOTD for all the great opportunities you provide us.

Thanks for the heads-up on the weak dictionary. I love wordgames, and GGOTD is great (!), but I'll skip this one.

Too many times, someone gets up in arms because someone else on this site is "complaining" when they're offering honest feedback. In this case, it's wonderful that some people spoke up about the quality issues.

Games shouldn't suck, even if they ARE free. And GGOTD should hear about it because it'll helpt them find better games for us and not reflect badly on their site and their channels.

I tried the demo version of this, and while I usually like word games, the problem with this is that it seems completely arbitrary whether words are acceptable or not. Words that are acceptable in one game are invalid for another--sometimes plurals are accepted when the singular word is not, and vice versa. This spoiled my enjoyment.

I love word games, read all the previous comments and thought that maybe it would be good for one of my children. Very frustrating having to constantly guess at what words it'll take. I didn't even get the smile and my word was hamper... her, ham etc weren't accepted. I could see it being a fun game with a better dictionary and maybe an option of a time limit (for the adults). Thanks GGAOTD. I'm going to pass on this one.

I guess it isn't for English speakers, either. 'Tap' and 'put' aren't words?

In order for a game to be enjoyable and fun, it should at least try to be smarter than the one playing. This isn't challenging, just frustrating.

The Cheshire Cat is not owned by Disney. The character is from the book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" which was published in 1865.

So the copyright has expired and the character is now in the public domain.

Check here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_public_domain_characters

However this does not mean that derivative works can't still be copyrighted, and that cat does look very similar to the Disney version.
