Howcome all the COOL games come out when I forget that game giveaway of the day exists? All the crappy puzzle games are out when I remember it exists. :(

The game installed easy. When I first played it, I noticed that my keyboard "mute" and volume keys didn't work during play, ie: I couldn't turn it down. Then today, I tried it again and I can't get the sound to work at all? Hmm? I'm sure I'd have muted it anyway, but wonder what's up with that. Thanks FGOTD!

At @45: I had to switch to easy mode to defeat this guy. I just couldn´t deal enough damage on normal to kill him. If you take too long, you get auto-killed as you noticed.

As for switching resolutions, maybe some who is able to get the prompt can host some video.cfg files for each resolution. They are only very small and it should be easy to set up.

I like good old style space shooters.
This one is almost good.
Graphics are poor, no real 3D, no shiny or reflective ship hulls.
Tactics also are poor, because enemy attacks without tactics.
Good are the different levels of difficulty as always in ALAWAR Games.
On level 'Easy' no problem to solve all levels within a day.
However, its a long time ago that I called myself a gamer. I have no particular interest in playing conputer games and a game must be really exceptional good, that I would consider buying it.

So far the only one I found on GOTD was 'Jets and Guns'.
I'm more into applications.

I downloaded this game, activated it, and then began to play. It was working well, until the next mission. Then the screen got dark but you could still make out some things. I attempted to quit and restart, then it happened. The screen got very bright, going back to my desktop icons. So bright that it was difficult to distinguish anything on the screen. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and even it was not readable. I hit shut down as I could just faintly make it out. The system shut down. I then rebooted and the system was fine. However I did not restart this game. Frankly that was not a good experience. Any suggestions to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated as the game seems quite good.

completed in an half hour, too easy, gameplay is also extremely linear and always the same, like also the level designs.
Graphics is poor too compared the slow 3d engine (no lighting on the models)...
There are A LOT of freeware doujin shooters that are LIGHTYEARS better than this one

This game must be really graphically intensive. It ran quite choppy, and had no options for decreasing the graphical quality, so it was impossible to play. This is just like Alawar's last game given away of this genre, Crusaders of Space 2, which many also reported being extremely slow.

Is Alawar great, or what!?? :) YES! I've been talking about it so much lately,of how they keep giving us so many really nice games free, that people are starting to think I have ulterior motives for talking of it so much. LOL! Nope, I just love Alawar games! THANKS much again, Alawar & GOTD team!

to #45 If you kill that boss before you get to that stage than you go to the next level. Just give him all you got before that point. Works every time.
To #27 I tried to reset the resolution by deleting video.cfg but it won't load afterwards like what happened with #40
I wish I could change the resolution. Other than that this game is pretty fun.

9 out of 10 - I couldn't easily figure out how to select a new fighter when it said one was available. Clicking on the message to access that screen would help. When I went 'back', the next one was locked.

No need to get into the PC vs Mac arguments here. Both have their strengths and weakness. I do agree, XP is the better way to go right now. Maybe in time, Vista will be a more attractive option.

Nobody else seems to be having this problem but...

At the fourth boss, after reducing its armor down to almost none, when it vanishes and reappears I suddenly die even though the lasers the boss is firing are not even close to me. Happens every single time, no exceptions!

Uninstalled.

Sounds like most like it but I'll have to give it a thumbs down.

#37, suggesting someone should switch to Macs to get away from Windows is no longer valid since XP came out. XP is a far more functional, easy to use, and CUSTOMIZABLE OS than Mac OS X. If you really want control over your computer, getting a Mac is the last thing you should do. I am speaking from experience here. For a gamer, it's absolute suicide to invest in a Mac. I use Windows XP and have more freedom to do anything that I want than I ever did using Mac OSX and earlier versions of Windows. I agree that Vista is garbage, stick with XP, but never, NEVER get a Mac (unless you are a computer programmer/video editor or someone who works with audio. Macs are ok for work related tasks, terrible for everyday basic functionality and customization (not to mention ridiculously overpriced)

I was actually going to buy this game a while back, but I never got a response to my query about bugs and missing features (changing resolution and remapping joystick controls), so I didn´t bother. It is fun though and certainly worth trying out today.

I'm really enjoying this game. It has crisp graphics and more of a realistic feel to it than Astro Fury, offered the other day. Love the lightening bolt weapons. It's the best space/ shooting game I've downloaded so far. I suspect there may have been better ones offered, but with dial-up, game size is a limiting factor. Thanks so much GGOTD and Alawar, this game rocks!

Vista ? - you want control of your* PC with Vista ?

* you don't own a PC with Vista - the entertainment industry do - and hardware you've gone out and paid good money for can and will be switched off without asking your permission if they (media companies/Microsoft) find you could somehow copy a movie with it.

You have a few choices:

* wait until everyone reverse engineers their own code for free because Microsoft broke the compatibility layers - lets face it, it ain't going to happen. You bought a lame duck with hardware attached.

* upgrade (back) to XP ! - with the amount of memory you'll have in the Vista box to get it out of bed, it'll not only fly, but it'll run software again !

* ditch Windows completely - the time has come to seriously consider a linux box or an Apple Mac full-time, allowing you (for now) to forget about all the potential ways your machine could be infected by malware, and get on with using *your* computer the way *you* want to.

I suppose this would be a good game, with the current ratings and Alawar publishing it. Unfortunately I only get a black screen with this game, until I either alt-tab out or alt-F4 to quit. Simply not working on my computer, so it gets a thumb down from me.

#10: The GameBox is a little tool from Alawar which informs you about new games and updates. If installed and started at least once in a month you are able to download one game for free from Alawar (every month another game). This month it is "Hyperballoid Complete Edition", which has been given away here recently.

This was originally given away over on the giveaway project back in Oct 06. There were no comments at the time and just over 10 thumbs up/down votes.

Un-wrapping the zip file gives you the usual activate and set up programs. If you are new to the game giveaway project I suggest you read the document that is packaged with the game. It is always advisable to activate the program first, and then set it up otherwise you may get the 60 minute trial window, and assume that the game giveaway team are not being truthful when they say full version programs. Every game I have downloaded from this site has always been a full version.

As I’ve suggested before if you have a hard disc that has been partitioned; that is having two drives on one hard disc, or if you do have more than one Hard Disc Drive (HDD); you should install your games on the drive that doesn’t have your operating system (OS) on; which is usually called the boot drive. (It’s really easy to add another drive to your computer; especially if it was made since the millennium, or if you have a relatively new Mother Board (MoBo) that supports ATA drive technology; just Google ‘Adding a second Hard Drive’ and several decent tutorials will be found). The reason that you should install the games on another drive is that if your boot drive, which by default is usually your C: drive starts to fill up, the parts of the hard drive that are used for memory management will become smaller. That is the swap files, which emulate RAM. These normally can grow in size to thousands of megabytes and can be changed via the control panel. As a general rule of thumb, the bigger your hard drive the bigger you should or can set your swap files. (Google ‘Changing the Size of Swap Files or Increasing the Size of Swap Files’ {or page files if you are still using NT}) The less you have on your boot drive, the faster your computer will run (up to a point). I always used to partition my boot drive, although I now always have up to three hard drives in each computer, so rarely do it now. With newer cases and MoBo’s you can add a lot more HDD’s, but if you do, always ensure you have adequate ventilation and cooling to ensure the computer doesn’t overheat (a mistake I made that cost me an expensive graphics card and a hard drive). Another reason your computer may run slower when using a single hard drive (and even when you have multiple hard drives) is that the page files may be fragmented. This will occur if you regularly download, install and uninstall programs; which if you’ve been coming to the giveaway project for some time, you’ll probably have done. So do a defragmentation at least once a week, or use a good defrag program such as disckeeper that keeps your disks defragged all the time. There are loads of good tutorials online which can be accessed using your favorite search engine.

To the game in question, lol:

Once installed and started you are immediately given the option of changing the screen mode. There are five options:

640x480x32
800x600x32
1024x768x32
1280x960x32
1920x1440x16

Once you’ve set this up you can click on ‘Start Game’ which loads the game, that was developed by Urse Games, the same developer that made Gem Ball and Nuclear Ball, which were previous giveaway games . If you allow the game to continue loading the main menu without pressing enter or the space bar you will get the story line scrolling across the screen in a manner reminiscent of the Star Wars movies. The Main menu gives you access to the help menu which gives you an overview of the in game HUD (heads up display) and the mouse button controls, which are simple, with only a two button mouse being required.

The second page takes you to the game attributes where you can scroll through all the ships at your disposal (12), weapons available to you (20) and the types of bonuses available(22). You can also see details of the enemy fighters of which there are twenty eight, compared with the twelve you can choose from. Each ship has different attributes such as speed and defenses; and in the case of the enemy fighters you can see which are harder to destroy. The enemies have six types of bosses (Wrecker, Devastator, Destroyer, Carver, Suppressor and Carrier) all of which have massive amounts of armor and can take loads of damage (as you would expect with bosses. The enemy also has 14 ground forces such as the freelander, bug and rocket tank. All in all a great array of ships and bonuses that should keep you entertained for ages. I’ve had this game for over a year (I bought it before it was first given away) and my son and his friends often play this game amongst others despite working through all the levels ages ago.

Check out my recently made review on Alawar’s web site:

http://www.alawar.com/games/hyperspace-invader/

The options menu includes music, sound and gamma control sliders as well as a control button that allows you to change the key bindings of the few keys that are required. You can use the mouse, joystick and the keyboard together if you wish, but you do have to use the keyboard for some controls such as changing rockets and weapons; full details can be found in the help options menu. The game can be played with one or two players so you can’t get away from using the keyboard anyway. You can set up the game so that each player is using a different ship. I’ve not heard of any program that allows you to use two mice on one computer, although I do use two mice when playing hidden object games with my daughter (a PS2 and a USB mouse can be used together, but not separately, if you take my meaning)

…………The postman has just delivered my long awaited $50 game Crysis , which I pre-ordered last December, so I’m going to have to hurry up this review as I want to immerse myself In what is probably the first of many of the next generation of graphically superior games………..

There are six episodes of 5 levels each making a total of 30 levels with names like Granite Danger, Iron Fist, Desperate Skirmish, Steel Heart, Shell Shock, Hot Metal, Laser Flash and Infected Plasma. Pretty heavy stuff Eh! You will encounter one of each of the six bosses mentioned above during this journey.

Game play is similar to the usual vertical scrolling games except that this is in 3D. You can change your viewing perspective from the options menu or by toggling through the various views by using the ‘C’ key. There’s a top down side scrolling option and four vertical scrolling 3D views, each of which gives the game a different look, especially the almost horizontal view that simulates flying low on the horizon to an almost, but not quite top down view of the game.

The different views will give your ship the appearance of being very large taking up
almost the whole of the bottom of the screen or much smaller (but not as small as the ships in games such as Astro Fury, Jets ‘n’ Guns, the Star Defender series, and the Crusaders of Space series), so if you are using the 3D setting with the largest looking screen remember you can scroll to the left and right, off screen. You can also move around the playing arena at will as opposed to being tied to the bottom of the screen like most games of this genre.

There are two modes you can play the game in. A simulator mode or an arcade mode, you can swap between the two modes by pressing Esc and going into the options menu then the control menu where you will find the toggle for this mode change

When installing, be sure to uncheck the game box check box otherwise you will get the Alawar game box downloaded. I personally don’t mind the game box though as it gives me easy access to all my Alawar games as well as access to every game demo at Alawar. I beta tested the Game Box before it was put on general release earlier this year and thought it a cut above other game managers. Also if you want to install your game to a custom location as I advised above, you must check the custom install box otherwise the game will be automatically installed to the default position on the boot drive (in the program files folder on the C: drive)

In my opinion this is a great space shooter and plays differently to your normal vertical and side scrolling games. For those into this genre it’s a definite must have together with at least one each of the others in the space shooter genre; which includes the ones I’ve already mentioned above plus the 360 degree shooters such as Desperate Space, Dark Archon, Bullet Candy and Clash n Slash as well as the first and third person shooter games such as Void Space and Devastation Zone Troopers respectively. I’d personally give this a 7.5 out of 10; for my son I’d give a 9 out of 10, but if you’re expecting state of the art graphics I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10. That said the graphics are not bad. I do prefer the 3D setting with the lowest horizon as it makes the game harder. My advice is, at least check it out for more than a few levels and see what you think.

Sorry about the lack of screen captures today, I did start taking them but I wasn’t expecting the post to arrive so early. I must get to my new game (he says gleefully). :)

Have a great weekend folks. :D

Check out the following images:

http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=hyperspace+invaders&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

And for those who missed my previous link to a free full version commercial vertical space shooter called Alien Wars (aka Alien Stars) on the lines of Astro Wars, here it is again. Be warned though the price you pay is a browser window opening up to the home page once you close the game down: If you get a page not found message, just ignore it as you will get a download link:

http://www.gametop.com/download_free_shooting/play_alien_wars.html

Although the game is similar to Astro Wars, in my opinion it is better because you are able to roam the playing area freely as opposed to being stuck at the bottom of the screen.

There are a few points I've missed but I'm sure you'll forgive my neglect.
