A top down hack and slash (with guns) action game with two modes of play..

Introduction:

Take on the role of a monster hunter who has occupied independent lands. You have the ability to hack opponents with your trusty sword, which is able to cut enemies into pieces. Also, use of a firearm to reduce the population of monsters. The main thing to remember is that the cartridges are not infinite, it is worth saving ammunition. You are waiting for tenacious bosses who will try to stop you. Let the hunt begin!

The Game

Hot Steel is a hack and slash with guns game. Your rifle has limited ammo, but you can pick up small clips along the way. There are four weapons available, but the third and fourth a A4 shotgun and a laser, aren't available initially. There are various enemies to contend with, all of which are easily dispatched. One particular enemey that looks like a brown pulsating pudding, which when hit divides into smaller puddings up to four times; successive hits divide the pudding further until all are destroyed (takes 4 or 5 hits to destroy; or once divided for the first time, if you run away they die within a few seconds). You get three lives. Each death results in you being transported to the beginning of the level. Once all lives are used up, you start from the very beginning again.

There are two modes a level based campaign, where you walk through drops of blood to move to the next level and an arena mode where you are attacked by successive waves of enemeies each arena has 20 waves to contend with. If you select the arena mode you can choose from five different environments that are available from the campaign mode; these include the old forest, catacombes, deadly fields, hall of the fallen and blood valley. From this list I'm presuming there are five levels to the campaign mode. I've not had time to work through all of the levels in campaign mode, but I presume there are five levels. Each campaign level only takes a few minutes to beat (at least the first few) assuming you don't lose all of your lives. The music is repetitive, but fits the mood of the game perfectly.

Key bindings are fixed. to move use the WASD keys, to run faster use the shift = a movement key, to use your sabre or gun use the LMB. To pick extra ammo or health (adds +20 HP per pack)walk over the icon. If you are still on full health don't walk over them as they are still used, but add nothing to your health bar. Along the way you pick up treasure chests. To get these press E or click your LMB on the chest. These contain either ammo or health. When using your sabre you only get five swings then need to rest for a short time (indicated by the blue stamina bar that appears once you've exhausted your stamina). It takes about six seconds to regenerate.

The last few images at the end of the review show the five different arena stages. The game was supposed to be released on Steam last week , but has been delayed. You can see a video of game play via the Steam store page HERE.
